Double Page Spreads
Features and Layouts
Side bar: This is what the viewer’s eye will go to first because of the bold red
background and the text in white which stands out quite a bit. For “Q” Magazine
this is the monthly music recognition which in this edition happens to be about
Jay Z. When magazines use a bright background its because it is important.

In an article photographs are used to support your point and
they are also used to show the reader what the article is about
without reading any of the information shown on the page. This
photograph is used to show who the article is about and in this
case it has been used to show Jay Z performing which relates to
what the article is about.

Article title:
This is used to tell the reader what
the article is about the magazine
editors have chosen to use “Jigga”
in the tittle because it is how many
people will know Jay Z as, Jigga is a
nickname given to Jay Z as a nick
name, Jay Z is also a stage name his
real name is Shawn Corey Carter.

Pull Quote: This is a “pull
quote” a pull quote is when
the writer pulls out phrases
from his article and places
them in places where they
will stand out and are likely
to catch the reader’s eye, this
is done so that it grabs the
reader’s attention towards
reading it. Red lettering is
used to link with the “month
in music” side bar, helps the
eye to travel.

Subheading: This is highlighting
what/who the text is about in this
case it has highlighted Jay Z which
not only tells the viewer who it is
about but also highlights what’s
important.
Kicker:
The kicker is used to give the
reader a short indication to
what the article is about. Also
in red helping the eye travel
around the page and also
highlighting what is important.
Another photograph of Jay Z performing
at a concert where the seems to be
rapping on the microphone, the
photograph is framed from the side bar
and also the main photograph, it also
contains a caption.

Caption: Normally a caption will
be found on a photograph, it
will talk about what the
photograph is of and perhaps
where it was taken. In this case
it says how Jay Z ignored a
“Twerk Jigga, Twerk” flag.
Captions can also be used to tell
what the article is on.

DropCap: “K” in red to
again help the eye travel
from the pull quote and
the side bar this helps the
viewer to focus on the
body text to read what the
article is about.

Body text: Body text is
The main part of the article,
it talks about what the
article is about normally it
will link to what the image is
about and what the story
behind the photograph is
about.
Gutters: Gutters are separations in
between text, these are used to
separate the text so that the reader
has help focusing on each bit of
information at a time.
Article’s title:
Straight to the point on who
it is, simple in black and in
Britannic Bold font helping
it stand out from the red
and also the “Q introduces”
title.

The magazine’s own title
for the article, this is used
when a new band/ singer
is brought out for people
to read about, easy to find.

Main photograph, main focus point of the article, the band in the mid centre, bright
Background helping the band stand out, artificial lighting from the inside and
Natural on the outside, staged, motionless, trendy style.

Gutter: A gutter is used to
separate the text on an
article this is so that the
reader’s attention is focused
on one part at a time.

Kicker: A kicker is used as a punchy quote
to grab a reader’s attention, it is there so
that the reader can read a little bit about
the magazine, here they have used a red
colour to match with the dropcap used a
clever rhetorical question.

Dropcap: A dropcap is used to help
the viewer’s attention go towards
the article, Q magazine has done
this by doing the same technique as
they do to their magazine name,
this may be a link to help keep
within the house style.
Gutter from the article from
the questionnaire to help
separate what bit is which
This is a questionnaire asked in the interview of
London Grammar they wanted to know how good
their London Grammar is, they have highlighted in
red the question and left it black for the answer.
The background in yellow helps separate the
questionnaire from the rest of the article.

Conclusion from the article, in articles these
are normally placed on the end or nowhere
at all, it is there so that it tells the reader
information about the artist/band. In this
case it tells the reader about what separates
this band from the rest, who they are fans of
and also the best song for people to listen to
from London Grammar.

Pullquote:
A pullquote is a quote
taken from the article such
as what the artist/band
said or something
important featured in the
article there to help the
reader to be interested in
so that they read the full
article. In this case its what
the singer said about the
band’s style.

Caption: A caption is
normally included in
photographs to tell the
reader perhaps where it
was taken, who it is or
what is happening in the
photograph. In this
article the caption is
telling the reader who
London Grammar is
(their names).
Title: Every article will have a title, this article’s
title is how the magazine article describes the
singer, they have used the main photograph to
blend with the title and I think it adds a quirky
feel to it helping everything blend together.

White space: White space is used so that the
reader’s eyes can rest from the rest of the
article, because the article has such a good flow
the white space helps it to not look overfilled.

Kicker: The kicker is in bold and in
italic which again matches the title
and helps the article flow, they have
placed a statement and also a quote in
the kicker which captures the reader’s
attention to also catch the reader’s
attention the writer has changed the
colour of the model’s name to keep
the reader interested and also to get
attention.

A page number alongside the
magazine name and also the
month and year the
magazine article belongs to is
found on the bottom of the
page. This can be to help
people know the information
if it is ever posted online.

Dropcap: A dropcap is used to help
the reader focus on the article and
also to help the reader distinguish
where the article starts . The writer
has used a bold font with an italic to
again link with the title and the
subtitle.
Photographer recognition using
a bold font for the word
“photographs” and then a
Adobe song perhaps for the
photographer’s name.

A quote from the article is
located in the white space of
the photograph, linking with
the article because of the
italic and also as it is in black
however the red underline
helps it to stand out from the
page and also links it to the
artist’s name on the kicker.

Gutter: The gutter is used to
separate text from each other
often used in magazine articles
and also newspaper articles.
With this article a black line has
also been used to separate the
information from one column to
another.

Body text: in New Times Roman, very simple,
very straightforward, the writer has used the
Dropcap to help guide him on how to write
the text for the first column which again is
something different not many magazines do
this.
