- 2. What format is used? The format of this article is not a question/answer style, however, it has an interview style with the quotes incorporated within the text itself. They use the conventional features of a double page spread such as a standfirst, usually written in a medium sized font and in italics with some key bits of information highlighted to the reader, usually in a different colour etc. The writer has also used a pull quote which is in a totally contrasting font to the rest of the article which makes it stand out and also helps to hook the reader into the article. The pull quote is there to ‘pull’ people into reading their article and also h int what the article is about. Captions and subheadings are also used to give information about the photos and the artist themsel ves and the sub headings allow the writer to organise their information on the page and include more of a wider story. Imagery is also used within the magazine – there is a main image which bleeds across the gutter and two images on the bottom right hand page of the magazine. All of these combined elements make the magazine’s format conventional and appealing to the readers. What language is used by the writer? Formal language has been used by the journalist who has written this article. The writer uses lots of describing language to portray Rhianna in a positive but typical way. They describe her as ‘sporting a mostly shoulder-length, barrel curled locks in a shade twice as fluorescent as a fire engine’. This is quite a fun and playful style language and creates a colloquial effect to the article. The writer also uses wordplay and puns to make the article more interesting. For example in the top right hand corner the line ‘Pon de Airplay’ relates to Rhianna’s song ‘Pon de Replay’ which may appeal to and amuse the readers because of the inference to Rhianna’s songs. What language is used by the interviewee? There is lots of reference to the artists’ songs titles as opposed to the artist herself. There is a quote from her saying ‘A lot of people dress like Lady Gaga now. I’ve just stepped off into a whole new look and style’. This shows that she uses quite ordinary language but is true to her word and sophisticated as she’s not using slang or contracted language.
