1. Double page spread analysis
Pirates of the Caribbean: At
World’s End
By Kyrillos Rafla
2. There are a few smaller images that
are positioned down the side bars of the review
page (bottom left of the page.) As well
as featuring columns of text that are in a
standard yet simple grid format despite the use
of puff quotes and side bars featured within the
grids of text.
Mise-en-scene (overall composition of the double page spread):
The general composition of review pages are double page spreads which are made up by
two A4 size pages. Most DPS are made up by a combination of a large iconic image and a
considerable amount of text, both of which take up roughly an A4 page (half the DPS) And
this review page is no different, it follows the typical layout conventions of a DPS.
The overall colour schemes of this review page is
mainly black and white with hints of red and
yellow. The simplistic colour schemes makes the
overall composition look simple yet effective as
this colour scheme adds a professional look to the
mise-en-scene.
3. The header of this DPS is “Screen.” The header is the largest and
boldest font on the page and this and the image is the first thing that
captures the readers attention when first looking at the page. In this
DPS there are also two other smaller feature headers these being;
“New movies in order of merit” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At
worlds end.” – The title of the film that is being reviewed
In terms of text the title of the film is the most important of the
headers as is shows the audience what they will be reading about
to determine whether or not the review article would interest them
or not. The main body of text is written in three columns
4. •
The use of stars, these of which are used to act as a visual representation of the
rating that has been given by the magazine to this film. Star ratings are
commonly used in review pages as they provide the reader with a visual
representation as to how good the film has been rated and this can determine
how likely the reader will be to watch the film, as usually highly rated films are
most commonly watched.
The main image used in this film review article is a screen shot from footage
within the film. This is a typical convention of review articles as it is important to
create a cohesion between the review article and the footage of the film as this
ensures that the overall composition of the DPS links to the film they are
evaluating but also provides the reader with a greater picture of what the
film entails and whether or not they would be interested in watching it.
In this DPS the image was chosen as
it shows the main characters in the
film, who are both well known and
so will promote the film in a good
light. The main image takes up the
right side of the double page review
which indicates that images are an
important and conventional feature
of DPS articles.
