[Container world 2017] The Questions You're Afraid to Ask about Containers
Use the Right Container Technology for the Job
Application containers, machine containers, process containers, system containers -- what's the difference? 12-factor apps, Microservices, cloud-native application design -- are these real? Docker, Rocket, OCID, LXD -- do I need all of them? Should I run PaaS on top of my IaaS, or my IaaS on top of my PaaS? Do containers fit into PaaS or IaaS? Or both? Neither? Where are the intersections of Kubernetes, Swarm, Mesos, and OpenStack? How do I ensure compatibility across my public and private clouds? And how does bare metal -- from my commodity, scale-out x86 to my powerful, scale-up mainframes fit into all of this? Can any of this stuff actually be used in a highly secure environment? In this session, Dustin Kirkland, Ubuntu Product and Strategy Lead at Canonical, will explain the container ecosystem in clear, concise terms, from real enterprise user experience -- the successes and the failures.
Docker - The Linux Container
Docker is a tool that makes it easier to use Linux containers (LXC) to deploy applications. It allows applications to run consistently across servers by including dependencies within containers. Containers are more lightweight than virtual machines and use less resources. Docker containers start faster than VMs and allow for easy sharing of application components. The Docker registry stores container images and metadata for easy sharing between developers and production environments.
Why Docker
Configuration management tools like Chef, Puppet, and Ansible aim to reduce inconsistencies by imposing and managing consistent configurations across environments. However, they do not fully address issues related to dependencies, isolation, and portability. Docker containers build on these tools by adding standard interfaces and a lightweight virtualization layer that encapsulates code and dependencies, allowing applications and their environments to be packaged together and run consistently on any infrastructure while also providing isolation.
Docker by Example - Basics
Docker has created enormous buzz in the last few years. Docker is a open-source software containerization platform. It provides an ability to package software into standardised units on Docker for software development. In this hands-on introductory session, I introduce the concept of containers, provide an overview of Docker, and take the participants through the steps for installing Docker. The main session involves using Docker CLI (Command Line Interface) - all the concepts such as images, managing containers, and getting useful work done is illustrated step-by-step by running commands.
Docker introduction
Docker is a system for running applications in isolated containers. It addresses issues with traditional virtual machines by providing lightweight containers that share resources and allow applications to run consistently across different environments. Docker eliminates inconsistencies in development, testing and production environments. It allows applications and their dependencies to be packaged into a standardized unit called a container that can run on any Linux server. This makes applications highly portable and improves efficiency across the entire development lifecycle.
Realizing Linux Containers (LXC)
Linux containers (LXC) provide operating system-level virtualization using features of the Linux kernel such as cgroups, namespaces, and chroot. This allows for the creation of lightweight isolated environments called containers that share the kernel of the host system. Containers offer many advantages over traditional virtual machines such as near-native performance, flexibility, and lightweight resource usage. The document discusses the key building blocks and technologies that underpin LXC such as cgroups for resource control and namespaces for process isolation. It also covers the benefits of using LXC and how container images are realized on Linux.
KVM and docker LXC Benchmarking with OpenStack
Passive benchmarking with docker LXC and KVM using OpenStack hosted in SoftLayer. These results provide initial incite as to why LXC as a technology choice offers benefits over traditional VMs and seek to provide answers as to the typical initial LXC question -- "why would I consider Linux Containers over VMs" from a performance perspective.
Results here provide insight as to:
- Cloudy ops times (start, stop, reboot) using OpenStack.
- Guest micro benchmark performance (I/O, network, memory, CPU).
- Guest micro benchmark performance of MySQL; OLTP read, read / write complex and indexed insertion.
- Compute node resource consumption; VM / Container density factors.
- Lessons learned during benchmarking.
The tests here were performed using OpenStack Rally to drive the OpenStack cloudy tests and various other linux tools to test the guest performance on a "micro level". The nova docker virt driver was used in the Cloud scenario to realize VMs as docker LXC containers and compared to the nova virt driver for libvirt KVM.

Docker - Frank Maounis
Docker is a container technology that allows applications and their dependencies to be packaged into standardized units called containers that can run on any infrastructure regardless of environment. Key Docker tools include Docker Engine for running containers, Docker Machine for provisioning hosts, Docker Swarm for clustering hosts, Docker Compose for defining multi-container apps, and Docker Registry for storing images. Docker

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

Spark is the widely used ETL tool for processing, indexing and ingesting data to serving stack for search. Milvus is the production-ready open-source vector database. In this talk we will show how to use Spark to process unstructured data to extract vector representations, and push the vectors to Milvus vector database for search serving.

Linux Containers (LXC) LXC é um tipo de virtualização em nível de sistema operacional que proporciona a execução de vários sistemas Linux de forma isolada (containers) em um único host de controle. O principal objetivo do LXC é criar um ambiente mais próximo possivel de instalação padrão do Linux sem a necessidade de utilizar um outro kernel.

Docker Hub A cloud service for sharing applications and automating workflows.
- 8. Docker & Developers Why do developers like it? With Docker, developers can build any app in any language using any toolchain. “Dockerized” apps are completely portable and can run anywhere - colleagues’ OS X and Windows laptops, QA servers running Ubuntu in the cloud, and production data center VMs running Red Hat. Developers can get going quickly by starting with one of the 13,000+ apps available on Docker Hub. Docker manages and tracks changes and dependencies, making it easier for sysadmins to understand how the apps that developers build work. And with Docker Hub, developers can automate their build pipeline and share artifacts with collaborators through public or private repositories. Docker helps developers build and ship higher-quality applications, faster.
- 9. Docker & Sysdamins Why do sysadmins like it? Sysadmins use Docker to provide standardized environments for their development, QA, and production teams, reducing “works on my machine” finger-pointing. By “Dockerizing” the app platform and its dependencies, sysadmins abstract away differences in OS distributions and underlying infrastructure. In addition, standardizing on the Docker Engine as the unit of deployment gives sysadmins flexibility in where workloads run. Whether on-premise bare metal or data center VMs or public clouds, workload deployment is less constrained by infrastructure technology and is instead driven by business priorities and policies. Furthermore, the Docker Engine’s lightweight runtime enables rapid scale-up and scale-down in response to changes in demand. Docker helps sysadmins deploy and run any app on any infrastructure, quickly and reliably.
