The documentary examines the themes of religion, youth, and influence through the story of three girls who killed a nun. 1. Type Of Documentary: The Devil Made Me Do It
documentary is quite self reflective and also uses the
voice of god throughout as it has a voice over talking
over the footage.
Themes: There are a lot of themes in the documentary
but I think the few that stand out the most are religion,
youths and influence. Religion is a main theme as the
documentary explains how three girls kill an innocent
old nun who was obviously extremely religious. Youths
is a very important theme as it shows how it is only
younger people who are effective and are more
responsive to the music produced by Marilyn Manson.
A few other themes throughout the documentary
include; Crime, death, punishment, control and
extremism.
Narrative Structure: There was a linear structure as the
story was told from beginning to end. There were two
narratives in the documentary, one which talked about
the investigation and the other talked about what
happened during the incident. There is also a
conclusion at the end which explains what happens to
the three girls who killed the nun.

2. Camerawork: There are different techniques used when doing the camera shots in the
documentary, a talking head shot occurs when Marilyn Manson was being interviewed. In
the interview it uses the rule of thirds so that Marilyn Manson was positioned in the third
of the picture on the right.
Mise En Scene: The binary opposition in the documentary was antithesis. There was a lot
of religious symbols throughout as one of the main themes was religion. The setting in
which Marilyn Manson was placed in for the interview meant that the lighting in the
room left a shadow over half of his face which could signify that he has got something to
hide. There was also a shot in an arcade when talking about kids/youths which has a
connection.
Camera: There were different types of camera shots throughout the documentary,
including a handheld shot which was used to follow Marilyn Manson, this reflects the
reality of the footage, the use of this shot also allows the camera man to react to the
actions being preformed in the documentary. A tracking shot was used to show where the
tragedy happened and there were a lot of long shots which also shown where the events
taken place.

3. Editing: The pace of cuts changed as some were really fast, these areas reflected on the
action going on and also highlighted emotions. The cuts were made a lot quicker when
showing the footage from Marilyn Manson's concert but also there were a few areas
containing slow motion of the concert. Zoom was used to focus on the religious symbols
displayed in most of the local areas.
Sound: There was a few different non-diegetic sounds used in the documentary which
included; church bells, barking dogs, heartbeats and stabbing sounds. There was a
narrator which held the documentary together also as a lot of the interviews were of
Italian people, the narrator was also used as a translator.
Archive Material: There was a lot of archive material in this documentary which included
police reports, still images and videos and also Italian newspapers, this broke the
documentary up and also had the narrator talking over it.
Graphics: There is a professional title which shows the relevance of the people to the
documentary, there are also dates, names, times and the place of each given event
displayed in the bottom left hand corner which is conventional. As a lot of the
documentary is told in Italian there are also a lot of subtitles at the bottom of the
screen. At the end of the documentary there is a screen which is full of text which
basically sums up the documentary and the outcomes of the events.
