Night Of The Living Dead - Poster Analysis
1.
2. Night Of The Living Dead
Night of the living dead is a horror film directed by George A. Romero. The film was released in
1968.
The main poster has a white border around
to which a slogan is placed and names of
the actors. This is used to draw in a wider
audience because they may in interest in
certain actors in the film. The images are
black and white due to the film being black
and white. The slogan at the top is written
in a bold black font – this helps it stand out
against the white background. The slogan
‘They won’t stay dead!’ gives you more of
an insider to the film – just like the title –
telling you that the dead are going to come
alive in this film. This connotes the horror
genre.
3. Night Of The Living Dead
The poster consists mainly of three colours.
These are used to represent the horror
genre and attract an audience that like the
genre and would be interested in this film.
The main colours are white, black and
green.
The background of the poster is black –
black is often used in the horror genre to
connote emptiness and darkness. There is
a mysterious element to it as you can’t see
what is there in the darkness so the
audience is left to wonder what is behind
it. It also connotes that it takes place
during the night (much like the title states)
4. Night Of The Living Dead
The images on the poster consist
of shots from people in the film –
giving you a look at what to
expect. The images consist of
both the victim and the killers –
you see people screaming and
then people grabbing the victims
and hurting them. Towards the
top of the poster we see what
looks to be the dead walking
around looking directly at us, the
audience. This is used to draw us
in and make us feel a part of the
film. A lot of the victims are
dressed in white – this connotes
how they are good characters
and innocent. Most of the
innocent victims are represented
as female this connotes the male
dominance over woman. We also
see a woman naked – again
connoting how women are sexual
icons to the males.
5. Night Of The Living Dead
The title of the film is placed at
the top in a bright green font.
Green often represents danger
and decay – much like the dead
people are. The bright green
contrasts with the rest of the
poster as it is the only real
colour used; drawing you to it
so you read and remember this
specific part. The font is quirky
and not consistent with the size
and lining of the words creating
an uneven feel.
Below the title we see some
more text, this gives the reader
even more information about
the film. The words they use
help to show and connote the
horror genre, for example
‘bloodthirsty’, ‘human flesh’. We
find out that it is a fight for
survival, so people are going to
die and it will be gruesome.
