DNA is the genetic material that is passed from parents to offspring and determines characteristics. This was proven through experiments like Frederick Griffith's 1928 experiment on bacterial transformation showing genetic material could be transferred, and experiments by Avery, Macleod and McCarty in 1944 and Hershey and Chase in 1952 that directly demonstrated DNA was the molecule transformed during bacterial infection that affected traits.
