What is Theory of Machines?
• The subject Theory of Machines may be defined as
that branch of Engineering-science, which deals with
the study of relative motion between the various
parts of a machine, and forces which act on them.
• The knowledge of this subject is very essential for an
engineer in designing the various parts of a machine.

TOM is subdevided into two parts-
1. Kinematics of Machines- Deals with only
motion.
2. Dymamics of Machines- Deals with motion
as well as forces and their effects.

Why to study TOM?
• To have knowledge about how machines work.
• It helps in designing of machines.
• Its helps in synthesis of mechanisms.
• It reduces hit and trial tactics.

Prerequisite for the Subject
You should have the knowledge of following items before
starting this subject:
1. Vectors
2.Concepts of displacement, velocity and acceleration
3. Basic mechanics.
4. And some part of engineering graphics.

What is Theory of Machines? • The subject Theory of Machines may be defined as that branch of Engineering-science, which deals with the study of relative motion between the various parts of a machine, and forces which act on them. • The knowledge of this subject is very essential for an engineer in designing the various parts of a machine.
