In this paper I will conduct research on the Bolsa Chica Wetlands that are located in an area of
lowlands in Orange County California, adjacent to the city of Huntington Beach. The area is
managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), whose mission is to protect and
enhance; migratory shorebird, seabird, waterfowl overwintering habitat; protect natural habitat for
shorebirds and seabirds; protect nesting and foraging conditions for threatened or endangered
species The Bolsa Chica Conservancy (BCC) is a local volunteer organization that assists in
maintaining the area. Its goals are to ensure the preservation, restoration, and enhancement of the
area (2010). This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A tidal salt marsh is a community of plants and animals that thrive in wet saline conditions
(ADBC, 2010), which rely on the tides to bring nutrients, such as oxygen, nitrogen, and
phosphorous. As the tide leaves the wetlands, pools are exposed which shorebirds can feed on
larvae without competition from fish that was impossible during the time period of water
diversion and dam construction. The land became baron; an area of waste land, until 1967,
when the water originally diverted for irrigation of fields, was redirected to the lowland area. In
2006, a tidal inlet was successfully opened after 107 years, allowing the tide to flow to various parts
of the wetlands which had previously been closed off (ADBC, 2010).
During the process of Bolsa Chica environmental change, much has been learned about ecosystem
destruction and restoration. Wetland areas are as Wright states among the most productive
ecosystems on earth, rich in breeding grounds for many species of fish, shellfish, and waterfowl
(2008). Interfering with the natural biogeochemical cycles can have devastating effects, completely
wiping out ecosystems. Lessons learned are valuable for other restoration projects, many of which
are in progress throughout the United States (U.S.). Major learning s included, the rise in water
salinity when not allowed to mix with fresh water creates a hostile environment, making it
inhabitable by the resident community, lack of tidal rhythm reduces

How Hadoop Is An Apache Open Source Software ( Java...
Hadoop is an Apache open source software (java framework). It runs on cluster of commodity
machines and provides both distributed storage and distributed processing of huge data sets. It is
capable of processing data sizes ranging from Gigabytes to Petabytes.
Architecture :
Similar to master / slave architecture.
The master is the Namenode and the Slaves are the data nodes. The Namenode maintains and
manages blocks of datanodes. They are responsible for dealing with clients requests of data. Hadoop
splits the files into one or more blocks and these blocks are stored on datanodes. Each datanode is
replicated to provide fault tolerance characteristic of Hadoop. Default replicator factor is 3 which
can be configured.
Components:
1.Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS): It is designed to run on hardware which are less
expensive and the data is stored in it distributed. It is highly fault tolerance and provides high
throughput access to the applications that require big data.
2.Namenode: It manages the system namespace. It stores the metadata of data blocks. The
metadata is stored in the form of namespace image and edit logs on a local machine. The
namenode knows the location of each datablock on the data node.
3.Secondary Namenode: It is responsible for merging the namespace image and edit log to create
check points. This would help namenode to free up memory taken up by edits logs from the start to
the latest check point.
4.DataNode: Stores blocks of data and

Human Immunodeficiency Virus ( Hiv )
HIV Crisis Human immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is one of the most important health
challenges in the world, because it can be preventive. In the United States over 1.2 million
people are infected with HIV, and roughly 1 in 5 people are unaware they are infected (CDC, 2014)
One of the best and most effective ways to reduce the spread of the virus is by creating HIV
awareness, by implementing intervention programs in high risk HIV communities. This paper will
provide an overall view of HIV, risk factors/health behaviors and analysis on HIV intervention
programs, and the responsibilities of health educators.
Overview of the health issue
The disease HIV, also known as human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that is transmitted
through bodily fluids that cause an attack on the body s immune system and destroys T cells,
which help defend the immune system from infectious diseases (CDC, 2015 A). HIV is a
prevalent public health issue because it is a preventable disease, but over 1.2 million Americans are
living with the disease and the numbers keep increasing yearly (CDC, 2011 A). Also, 1 out of
every 5 American living with HIV are unaware that they have the disease (CDC, 2011 B). Studies
show that in 2014 there were around 51,000 new cases of HIV diagnosis (CDC, 2011 B) Adult and
adolescent males from the ages of 13 and 24 years old make up 81% of all the HIV cases (CDC,
2014). The main targeted groups for HIV are, 1 in 6 gay/bisexual men, 1 in 20 African American
men, 1 in 48

Bullet Containing Embedded Metal Fragments
Wounds containing embedded metal fragments are not a recent phenomenon. However, the
introduction of unique metal mixtures to the modern battlefield, as well as the insurgents use of
improvised explosive devices, have resulted in the potential of embedded fragment wounds with
materials whose toxicological properties are not well understood. The Armed Forces Radiobiology
Research Institute was one of the first laboratories to study the long term health effects of
embedded fragments of military relevant metals. Responding to concerns over the effects of
wounds containing depleted uranium, the Institute developed a rodent model system to investigate
this issue. As additional unique metal mixtures were incorporated into weapons systems, the... Show

One aspect that did not change was the use of lead in ammunition. In the 1900s other metals and
metal mixtures were used to produce munitions. In response to the increased range of firearms and
the military requirement to defeat hardened targets, copper, tungsten carbide, and steel found their
way into munitions. Advances in medical care also resulted in increased survival rate of wounded
individuals, many of whom now carried embedded metal fragments in their bodies. Standard
surgical guidelines recommended leaving embedded fragments in place, unless they could be
easily removed, to lessen the collateral tissue damage that surgery can inflict. In addition, there
were few indications reported in the scientific literature to indicate that embedded metal fragments
left in place were a health hazard in either the short or long term. There were, however, the
occasional reports of adverse health effects resulting from the long time retention of lead fragments
(Stromberg, 1990; Eylon et al., 2005). The effects were usually attributed to the solubilization of
lead from the fragments, as symptoms usually abated once the fragment was surgically removed
(Linden et al., 1982; Beazley and Rosenthal, 1984; Magos, 1994; Gerhardsson et al., 2002).

Experiment 6
Blackwood Ballistic Pendulum
Jamal Wright, Zachary Floyd, Christopher Wilson
Abstract Our goal of this experiment is to determine muzzle velocity by two methods: 1) employing
uniform linear motion relations, the kinematic equations; 2) using the principles of conservation of
energy and momentum. In this paper, we aim to validate the law of conservation of momentum. We
do so by comparing results from two experiments conducted with a single ballistic launcher
/pendulum apparatus.
Hypothesis: The initial velocity of a ballistic pendulum can be determined using the law of
conservation of momentum. Momentum ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the ball hits the ground then y = H (since the positive y axis points downward.) By measuring
the distance of fall and using that acceleration due to gravity, g, the time of flight t = Tflight, can be
calculated with the following transformed kinematic equation:
Tflight = sqrt(2H/g)
The muzzle velocity, vmuzzle, (also the intitial velocity vx0) of the ball after being fired is
horizontal. From a measurement of the range, R, and using the time of flight, the muzzle velocity
can be determined
Vmuzzle = Ravg/Tflight
The second method requires the determination of the muzzle velocity from the principle of
conservation of momentum. The momentum of the ball just before it collides with the pendulum
must equal the momentum of the ball and the pendulum just after the collision, pi = pf. To expand
on this we see:
Mvmuzzle + MV = (m + M)V,
Where m is the mass of the ball, M is the mass of the pendulum and V is the velocity of the ball
and the pendulum together. Note: the velocity of the ball and the pendulum, v, is initially zero. In
order to find the velocity of the ball and the pendulum just after the collision we will use the
principle of conservation of energy. Neglecting friction at the point of support of the pendulum, the
gravitational potential energy must equal the kinetic energy of the ball and the pendulum at the
bottom of the

Pros And Cons Of Contracting At Will
During this paper we will discuss the implication of contracting at will, the immigration Reform
and Control Act (IRCA), and the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights
Act (USERRA). Its cons and pros as well as the possible legal action for wrongful termination
and any violations to the law. We will analyze some real cases where the law has been challenge
and discuss the proper procedures to apply the law and avoid violations. Contracting at will Most
companies use contracting at will as the most convenient way to hire employees because it give
them the freedom to finish the contract at any point without any particular reason. Therefore it

The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), was created to
minimize the disruptions for military members, however it create limitations and higher cost for
employers because limits employers ability to adjust to the absent, require employers to maintain
certain benefits during employee absent, and opens up employers to the risk and the cost of
litigation (CBO.gov). Without USERRA employers will not hire military service to avoid the
hazard of fulfilling the position in their absent or incurring in higher cost due to the fulfillment of
benefits while they are absent, however if the duty call is for more than 30 days the employee can
decide to continue with the employer s health program or not, therefore if they choose to continue
the employee has to pay the total premium including the employer s share. A big disadvantage for
an employer is the reemployment, because the employee is not obligated to inform whether he/she
want to reapply for the position, therefore if the employer make arrangements to maintain the
position available in order to comply with the law, however the employee decide not to return

Blizzard Of 1978 Research Paper
The Blizzard of 1978 was a disaster because it caused so many issues for more than 3 states.
Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Southwest Wisconsin were all affected by the
high winds of 100 miles per hour and 40 60 inches of snow. Also, some homes roofs were torn
apart and fell in the home. This killed more than 400 people, buried in 27 feet of snow or more.
Weather stations had to readjust their weather chart due to pressures falling below the chart scale.
This nearly caused a hurricane to happen. Other regions only saw over a foot of snow from the
storm. There are many reasons why this disaster caused so much damage. Transportation was

A well organized transportation system decreases overheads, while a disorganized transportation
system increases expenditures (Gerdes, 2008). The effects of transportation are not at all times
anticipated, and can include unintended or unforeseen impacts like congestion. Transport as
well carries a vital environmental and social load that cannot be ignored. The additional values
along with employment impacts of transport services generally extend past employment as well
as added value created by that activity; indirect impacts are most important. For instance,
transportation firms buy a fraction of their effort from local dealers. The manufacturing of these
inputs creates additional value added as well as job opportunities in the local market. The sellers
in turn buy goods and services from other local companies. There are added rounds of local re
spending that produce additional value added in addition to employment. In the same way, homes
that get revenue from jobs created in transport activities use some of their earnings on local
supplies as well as services. These acquisitions result in extra local employment and added value.
A number of of the household earnings from these additional jobs is subsequently used up on local
commodities and services, thus creating more jobs as well as income for local homes. Because of

Airport Construction Has A Major Effect On The Community
Airport construction has a major effect on everyone involved and also the community around the
airport. When an airport begins to make plans for expansion or repairs a whole list of things are
researched and planned years in advance. The airport manager is responsible for overseeing the
project and confirming that everything goes as planned and everyone stays safe in the process.
There are multiple regulations to abide by not only from the Federal Aviation Administration

regulations are enforced to help mitigate the risk involved in airportconstruction. Airport

So with that being an issue the airport is faced with the decision of buying new land which usually
results in buying whole neighborhoods and businesses. By doing this the airport personnel has to
make it right for the people living in these neighborhoods and offer them good compensation to
move away from the airport. They also have to think about the businesses around there and how the
economy will be effected if those around forced to move. But if the economy will benefit from the
construction at the airport in the long run the homeowners and businesses will not have a choice to
stay, but once again they will be takin care of. Communities that use roads and highways by airports
can be burdened by airport construction because of the increased traffic from construction vehicles
hauling equipment and supplies to the airport. A lot of times construction companies have to travel
through neighborhoods and other main roads that causes huge headaches for the community.
Airport construction also poses a short term but substantial threat to the environment with all the
different jobs being done, there are a lot of different construction equipment such as cranes, dozers,
excavators, concrete equipment, etc. that can cause problems with the environment. The main
environmental issues affected by include air, water, and noise pollution. Air pollution has always

Implementation And Feedback Systems ( Maclay, 2015 )
Development in practice: why projects fail and how to address these failures
During the last decades, the way Development is managed and how it addresses problems have
evolved. As conventional approaches failed to meet objectives, successive actions have tried to
make development practice more efficient and participatory. Nonetheless, difficulties persist, with
an increasing trade off between achieving equity through participation and the efficiency of
managerialism. Linear, pre designed implementation models like the blueprint are still the main
approaches to put theory into practice (Maclay, 2015).
In this context and in line with the material studied in the course, I will argue that development
projects face three types of problems: operational, cognitive and power. To enhance project
effectiveness, these call for different complementary solutions: more flexibility in implementation
and feedback systems (Maclay, 2015); a balance between participation and top down authority with
increased accountability (Brett, 2003); and the empowerment of the local considering the political
context (Andrews et al., 2013; Mohan and Stokke, 2000).
To be sure, these strategies are no panacea. Nonetheless, they can help overcome some glaring
failures in the current approaches, while any new problem should be analysed in an iterative
problem solving process through learning systems that could help design better measures in the
future. Additionally, for these measures to succeed, there is a

Aladdin The Musical Reflection
The theater was largely attended by children and toddlers. To my surprise, I noticed that there were
a decent number of adults attending the show too. I was not sure if they were dragged into the
show by their own children or that they came to watch the performance willingly. Unfortunately, I
was dragged into the theater to watch Aladdinthe Musical with my younger siblings during a
family outing in Disneyland. I tried my best to spot other adolescents in the theater. However, it
felt like I was the only one. Embarrassed, I sat in deeper into my seat, hoping that no adults could
find and criticize me. Aladdin the Musical uses the same plot from the movie, Aladdin as a
foundation for their own plot. The plot is about how a thief was destined to be the prince of
Agrabah with the help of a powerful genie and how an evil vizier named Jafar desired to take
over the kingdom of Agrabah by abusing the genie s powers. As the emcee made his
announcements, I assumed that I would fall asleep on the cushioned seat from all the boredom I
would experience from a children s fairytale. Surprisingly, I was wide awake throughout the entire
show. In fact, I enjoyed the performance very much.

they need not to reenact that scene. I also believed that the performance could have had more

The Qualities of a Leader
The qualities of one s leaders play a vital role in determining the success or failure of a society.
Virtuous leaders let a nation succeed when its at its greatest peril. The effectiveness of the leader
allows the nation to be great and the fulfill their mission. Over the years, the view on what an
effective government is has changed. In the 6th Century China, a Philosopher named Lao Tzu saw
an effective government as one that used war last, that the ideal form of governing is to have
minimal effect on peoples lives. In the 13th Century Italy, Machiavelli, a diplomat and philosopher,
advised that the prince should be well versed in the art of war, and should exercise qualities and
laws that bring them praise so their position is not disputed. While both views seem to be extreme
of a spectrum it will be clear the Machiavelli s Prince is the better leader for the modern society.
On the Subject of war and conflict, Lao Tzu deems it a last resort as it leads to suffering no
matter the outcome. When a country goes counter to the Tao, warheads are stockpiled outside
the cities. (Kindle Locations 1934 1935) Lao Tzu here is stating that once we stray from the
ideal path, pain and suffering will follow. Fear is the greatest enemy and is what leads to conflict. It
is once a person finds pleasure in war, they lose themselves and are no longer his idea of the ideal
man and is instead a

The Inventions from the Bubonic Plague
The bubonic plague, which has gone by many names over the years, has caused millions of
deaths and is still around today. However, after the Plague hit Central Europe, there was a huge
increase in quality of life. Religion was adversely affected as the churches were unable to stop or
even slow down the Plague causing most of the population to lose faith. The economies changed in
amazing ways for peasants with the loss of the feudal system, and life expectancy was improved
with the creation of modern medicine.
What is the Pestilence?
Caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, the bubonic blague, also known as the Black Death and the
Pestilence to Central Europe in the mid 1300s, is named after the buboes that appear on the
groin, armpit, or neck within a week of being infected. Buboes are swollen lymph nodes filled
with fluid that can reach up to the size of a large chicken egg. They are tender to the touch and
are black in color. The onset of symptoms start with a fever and chills and progresses to
headache, fatigue, muscle aches, and a cough that produces blood or sputum. Giovanni
Boccaccio was an Italian writer living in Florence in 1348 and said, Soon after this the symptoms
changed and black or purple spots appeared on the arms or thighs or any other part of the body,
sometimes a few large ones, sometimes many little ones. These spots were a certain sign of death,

Analysis Of The November Cotton Flower By Jean Toomer
New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings... Lao Tzu
Whenever a scene of a movie approaches where a debacle unravels or innocent lives are
jeopardized, audiences grip their chairs in anticipation for help to come or for a hero to spring into
action and save lives. Similarly, in many circumstances, no matter how dire an event might seem,
there is always a beacon of hope amongst doleful situations. From every ending comes a new
beginning. The poem, November Cotton Flower , written by Jean Toomer, describes (the conditions
when slaves were under the Harlem Renaissance) the conditions in which slaves were under during
the Harlem Renaissance where there seems to be no prospect for a brighter future for the slaves in
the society. Throughout the poem, Toomer develops his theme of hope and desire for a brighter

The November Cotton Flower is a poem that not only depicts a late autumn setting where the

The Portrayal Analysis Of Know Your Rights By The Clash
Know Your Rights by The Clash is a song that criticizes the oppression that poor and working
class people face. This song takes a sarcastic tone and goes over the three basic rights that
everyone has. It becomes very clear that the rights The Clash references are bogus and part of a
rigged system. The Clashreleased Know Your Rights in 1982. The 1980 s, in England where this
band was based, was a time of major social and political revolution. The Clash s music reflected
this, primarily producing music about revolution and the working class. The Clash s defining
elements were their punk rock, passionate, and enthused sound. They are now known as one of
the founding punk rock legends. Know Your Rights sound and message went a long way in terms
of empowering the audience; young adults, poor and working class people, revolutionaries. One of
the most important steps in advocacy is telling a story that will resonate with the desired audience.
Telling a story can be used across all the media realms, providing your audience with content that is
packed with utility, seeded with inspiration, and that is honestly empathetic, is what draws an
audience then, but also incites them to action (Hadley Chapman 9). Know Your Rights tells the
story of how people of traditionally view lesser socioeconomic classes rights are riddled with
injustice and oppressive stipulations. A few months before The Clash released Know Your Rights,

Thursday s Child Analysis
During the Great Depression, when every ounce of life was bleak, withering, and hopeless,
maintaining fortitude through adversity differentiated living another day and meeting the ravenous
hands of death. Thursday s Child, a historical fiction novel written by Sonya Hartnett, explores the
struggles of an Australian familyduring the Great Depression. Harper Flute, the narrator of the
novel, reflects on the events of her early life with her family members. Da (Court) is the
patriarch of the Flute family and is the deplorable and cowardly father of Audrey, Harper s older
sister, Devon, Harper s older brother, Tin, Harper s younger brother, and Caffy, Harper s youngest
brother. Mam (Thora), Harper s mother, maintains her sense of bravery during... Show more content

When Devon receives a sum of money belonging to the recently deceased Grandda (Court s father),
Ma explains the disagreeable relationship between Court and his father. During World War I
,
Grandda coerced Da to volunteer as a soldier, because he was jealous that his son was impeding
on his chances of ascending the corporate ladder. As Thora describes him, Grandda warned, Your
children...will forever hang their heads in shame (Hartnett 76 77). Da finally decides to enter
the war, but returns with alive. As a way of permanently preventing Da from jeopardizing
Grandda s career success, he implants the idea of moving into the country into Da s head.
Similar to entering into the war, Da also succumbs to Grandda s persuasion, and moves into the
country with the rest of the Flute family. This dysfunctional relationship between Da and his
father is a likely cause for Da s cowardly nature. Grandda s cold hearted nature and disinterest
towards his son continuously haunts Da for the rest of his life. For example, after Devon
volunteers to work for the sinister Mr. Vandery Cable, he returns him disappointed that he did
not receive his week s wage. Da initially confronts Cable with authority by stating, Where s your
heart, Mr. Cable?...You owe my son a week s wages (59). However, Cable quickly commandeers
Court s confidence and consequently belittles Da. He wrung his hand in silence, buckling his hat
and limped the journey back home. Hartnett s diction is masterful in transforming Da s courage
and assertion into cowardliness and passivity. This interaction between the affluent pig farmer,
Cable, and the impoverished father, Da, is a parallel to Court s relationship with his father.
Similarly, Da is a man that ultimately has no sense of determination or self confidence in any
regard. However, years later, when Audrey returns home after working for

Essay on Constitutional Framers
The Constitutional Framers envisioned a national government that, like Plato s cave, would be at a
distance and out of sight of the everyday affairs and thoughts of ordinary Americans. They had
envisioned Washington D.C. to be a cultural mecca on par with the capitals of European nations,
both economically and socially. The reality of the Washington Community was a disaster compared
to the lofty ambitions of the founding fathers; a desolate purgatory to be endured. The socially and
economically barren capital combined Spartan living conditions with isolation. High turnover was
prevalent in both the houseand senate; a disappointment to the Federalists who had hoped for
institutional memory within congress. Instead of creating the... Show more content on

The lack of historical precedent for building a governmental center ex nihil did not apparently,
generate any misgivings about the bold enterprise (Young, p. 96). The capital was destined to be a
success; so sure of this fact, funds for public buildings were expected to be raised through private
land speculation. Reality was a colossal failure; the founders were so successful at removing
congress from the minds of Americans that few thought to invest in the land speculation. The
capital was an economic disaster, a backwater community saved only by financial intervention from
neighboring states. For it was states, not citizens, that were revealed to have a proprietary interest in
the national establishment, and it was states that came to the rescue when the entire project was
threatened with collapse (Young, p. 99). Even with external funds, the Washington community
remained a desolate swamp no one wished to inhabit. Limited buildings, commerce and trade
produced an environment of barbaric day to day living conditions for congressmen. They worked
together, daily assembled in the noisy auditoriums of the Capital, with no offices but their desks on
the floor itself. They lived together in the same lodging houses. They took their meals together
around the same boardinghouse tables. Privacy was no more to be found during leisure than at
work, not even privacy when they retired; in their lodging houses they lay two in

Advertisements Are Manipulating Or Informing
Advertisements Are Manipulating or Informing
Advertisement has taken a significant role in people s daily lives. With the development of
technological devices; it is impossible to escape from the advertisements. People now are
surrounded by advertisements everywhere, on the TV screen, newspapers, magazines, and on the
internet. Advertisements help people know information about the products and keep track of the
new products. However, with all the advertising out there, advertising techniques have changed in
several ways to grab the consumers attention and to keep the consumer s loyalty to the product.
According to James B. Twitchell s article, What We Are to Advertisers, Twitchell said, The object of
advertising is not just to brand parity objects but also to brand consumers as they move through
these various communities. (Twitchell, 182) This describes why many of the advertisements now
tend to be more manipulative than to be informative. Many people opposed to the idea that the
advertisements are manipulating and they often argued that advertisements increase the consumers
knowledge about the products. However, there are some evidences that advertisements are
manipulating the consumers and influence their decisions by associating the product with feeling,
using entertainers, and making the advertisement visually attractive.
Firstly, opponents of the idea that advertisements are manipulating claim, that advertisements only

The Populist Movement, also known as the Forming the People s Party, are all about the We in
America. They are a group of people who formed because of the agriculture economy and didn t

and even supported fair work days for industrial workers. The Populist Movement was big in its

1893. William Jennings Bryan knew this and exploit what they wanted to get ahead in the

Breakaway Movie Essay
On this surface, director Robert Lieberman s film Breakaway seems like a simple comedy about an

Rajvinder Singh, the protagonist of the film, comes from a traditional Sikh family but decides at a

There are many scenes in the film where, for only English speakers, there are not translations as
to what is being said. Although for some this means not understanding the dialogue in the film, it
sparks the thought who is this film really for? I found it refreshing that although on the surface
this film felt very simple and designed for a Western audience, there were still many elements that
would be lost unless the viewer had intimate ties to the Sikh community. I found there were many
jokes that did not translate, even if they were said in English, and many references that would not
be understood unless actually researched. One example of this can be seen in the credits of the
movie when there is a combination of famous North American artists (such as Drake and Ludacris)
coupled with an iconic Indian performer like Akshay Kumar. Although many non Indian viewers
may not know who he is, the pairing with recognizable North American artists alludes to the equal
popularity. Breakaway not only contrasts iconic North American and Hindi performers but also
sights and sounds. The music in this film is quite powerful as well and contrasts against some of
the iconic Canadian scenes. For example, in many of the hockey scenes, there is loud Punjabi
music (as they call it in the film), taking the viewer away from their preconceived notions of what

Upon reaching Central America in the 1500s, European conquistadores were greeted by an

metropolises once belonged to the Maya civilization, but were deserted starting in the ninth century
for reasons yet unknown. Although the abandonment of these once thriving cities marked the end
of the Maya Classic period, lasting 250 A.D. to 900 A.D., it did not mark the end of the Maya

Minerals were collected by drilling cores in Belize s famous underwater cave, known as the Blue
Hole, as well as lagoons nearby. As the Blue Hole and other lagoons are surrounded on all sides
by thick walls of coral reefs, they act like a big bucket or a sediment trap , accumulating the
excess sediment brought in by rivers and streams (Ghose). Furthermore, this excess sediment is
swept into these lagoons during storms or wetter periods. In the event that it rained, the water
would eat away at the volcanic rocks of the region, which contain titanium. As a result, this free
titanium would flow in rivers and streams, which, in turn, would flow into the lagoons. Layer
after layer would settle on top of the previous, providing an accurate record of the historical
climate of this region. Droxler, the head researcher, and his team would then analyze the samples,
looking for the ratio of titanium to aluminum as relatively low ratios of titanium to aluminum
correspond to periods with less rainfall (Ibid). His team found that during the timeframe of 800
A.D. to 1000 A.D., there were not the usual five or six tropical cyclones every two decades, but
only one or two, signifying there was less than usual rainfall. Notably, this data comes from several

Characters In Disgrace Sparknotes
In 1997, South Africa entered the post Apartheid, a system which not only the colored but other
nationalities were severely restricted under the power of the white minority. Blacks were not
permitted to pay taxes so they couldn t benefit from them, they were not even considered citizens
and were not allowed to register in the white schools. Segregation took place by having people

depressing period that rulings was based on nationality, race, and gender (Gradin).
Disgrace opens up with the life of David Lurie, a 52 year old white professor of Romantic Poetry,
twice divorced, and basically, lives for his financial and emotional means. His life filled with
desire, but lacking in passion (Coetzee). This novel tells the Story of David and his daughter Lucy

visiting a prostitute. But still feels empty and seduces one of his students that makes him feel
young again, Melanie. Although Melanie Issacs was a minor character in the novel, her role or

Everything falls apart and David Lurie s life falls into disgrace after being charged with sexual
harassment. He is then prompted to leave his position at the university so he moves to his daughter

Spring is right around the corner, and it s time to start thinking about the gardening. Whether it
be flower beds or a vegetable garden, all your hard work in the beginning will set you up for an
enjoyable summer. Here a few different types of beds that you may want to try. Raised concrete
block vegetable garden You may ask yourself why you would want a raised concrete garden?
Concrete blocks absorb the heat all day long and maintain the root heat long into the night,
warm roots have produce many more vegetables for me. You need to measure your space and
take this into consideration when planning your new project. The cost may seem expensive at
first, but remember these blocks will last you a life time, so it is more than likely a one time
purchase. I make my concrete block two blocks high, spread out plastic, line the bottom with
rocks that I gather through out the yard or wood line, these are used for proper drainage. Fill
with dirt, fertilizer and soil nutrients and plant your plants. You can put a decorative spin on the
blocks by painting them, paint them a plain color or show your artist side and do a mural. What
ever you do make it uniquely yours. You will be so surprised how much more you yield after
putting together this garden, It actually doubled what I usually get. Patio Garden If a huge
garden is not your thing, how about a small patio garden? You can do a very manageable, easy to
care for garden right on your deck. Here are some tips if you decide to do

The Marine Air Ground Task Force
On the basis of United States Code, Title 10, and joint doctrine, the Marine Corps, in coordination
and cooperation with the Navy, has made logistical self sufficiency an essential element of the
Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) expeditionary warfighting capabilities. This means that
the Marine Corps logisticsmission, at all commands and support levels, is to generate MAGTFs
that are rapidly deployable, self reliant, self sustaining, and flexible and that can rapidly
reconstitute (Logistics Operations, 1999). While the Marine Corps is unmatched in its ability to
be the most rapid responding force across the globe, a deficiency exists that should be addressed.
Over the past decade, there have been numerous successful innovations in ground and aviation
logistics, but they have lacked in standardization or integration within the MAGTF. Emerging
operating concepts such as disaggregated MAGTF operations and seabasing, along with current
fiscal constraints, are driving the need to further modernize and integrate MAGTF logistics in
order to optimize support to the warfighter (Borrelli Hodge, 2013). Independently, the logistical
concepts and systems that exist for the ground elements and the aviation elements are proven to be
effective and efficient, however, when the aviation and ground elements work in concert the
response of logistical support is hindered. This paper will offer possible solutions to close the

Prof. Evelyn Alobba
A Personal Philosophy of Guidance
My personal philosophy of guidance, as a future counselor someday, is to guide an individual live
a life of happiness and contentment in the midst of a discontent world. For an individual to
achieve this, I will help her realize and achieve his or her full potentials through growing in
spirituality. Spirituality, for me, is having and maintaining a personal relationship with the Creator
God. As a Christian, I believe spirituality is very significant in an individual s life. Personally, my

It will also be a renewing and refreshing kind of experience for him/her since they are encouraged
to trust in Someone that is far greater than we could ever imagine. It is also in spirituality that we
realize our own purpose and see the true meaning of life and eventually learning to live a life of
contentment and happiness. The process of counseling in this aspect should start with a needs
assessment in the clients spirituality. Asking open ended questions is a good way to begin
exploring about the clients needs. In this way, the counselor can keep track on the spiritual
growth and maturity of a client if ever he/she has one. This is also important for the counselor to
have a gist of the over all concern of the client as well as to have an awareness of the client s
spiritual outlook. It is also important for a counselor to explore with a client on how they view
life in a spiritual context. In this way, it may assist the counseling process tremendously.
Specifically, when a counselor wants to specialize in Christian counseling, he/she should be aware
of how they deal with their clients. One perfect example is the use and timing of employing
biblical scriptures to the clients to aid in their healing. This example may provide comfort to what
the client is suffering from and will immediately open an avenue of hope for the client. As the
counseling progresses, the counselor is expected to remain interested and

My mother was in the room. And it was perhaps the first time she had heard me give a lengthy

assimilate into American culture while also keeping familial culture. A piece of heritage that uses a
language of intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to familytalk. Tan grew up with this

that many generations live under the same roof and this can cause a conflict in ideals. Conflicting

The Effects Of Immune System On The Body
Immunity
MersihaFrlj
Herzing University, Minneapolis MN
The purpose of the immune system is to prevent and minimize infections; this is how the body
protects us from microbes that would otherwise make us ill or kill us (Dugdale, 2013). The immune
system works by differentiating between our own cells (self antigens), foreign cells (antigens), and
pathogenic microbes (Dugdale, 2013). When our cells discover anything unfamiliar, our immune
system works to destroy it(Dug dale, 2013). If the immune system cannot activate to kill foreign
cells, we can get infections (Dugdale, 2013). Conversely, if it is activated without any foreign cells
present it can cause pathopysiological problems (Dugdale,2013). This paper will focus on the ...

A serum is an injection of proteins from a non human source (Hunt, 2014).The immune system can
attack the skin, kidneys, lungs, blood vessels, joints, and other organs (Hunt, 2014). Lastly, Cell
mediated (Type IV) ,or Delayed, Hypersensitivity happens over 48 72 hours and sometimes 21 28
days after exposure (Hunt, 2014). A prime example would be a tuberculin test, where after 48 hours,
the lesion can become inflamed and erythematic (Hunt, 2014).
Immunodeficiency and Affect on the Body WHO recognizes more than 220 immunodeficiency
diseases (Specific Disease Type, 2015). These diseases are also chronic and happen when part of
the immune system is defective, missing, or not functioning the way it should ( Specific Disease
Type, 2015). These type of disease can be an antibody deficiency, a cellular immunodeficiency, or
an innate immune disorder (Specific Disease Type, 2013). One innate immune disorder is HIV
(Pagana, 2015). This is a type of retrovirus that contains a protein and depresses the immune system
(Pagana, 2015). Antibody deficiencies affect the upper respiratory, sinuses, or lungs (Specific
Disease Type, 2013).Finally, cellular immunodeficiency can cause viral, fungal, and bacterial
infections in humans (Specific Disease Type, 2013).

Persuasive Essay For Fashion
In today s blog, we are going to discuss tips to make shopping for your wedding dress as easy
and as stress free as possible. The first thing you want to do is set up a budget. Plan to spend 10
percent of your overall wedding budget on your dress. This number is simply a starting point. If
dress fashion is most important, increase the budget for your dress and scale back on other
areas. You want to start the quest for your perfect dress early. Depending on the dress and the
designer, it can take time between the moment the order is placed and when you can bring the
gown home. If the dress is custom made, it can take 4 to 5 months for the designer make the
gown. You also want to schedule three fittings about a month apart. By starting early, it will give
you plenty of time to shop and see what is available. If you are short on time, keep in mind you
can expedite this by paying a surcharge for the gown. In the search for the perfect dress, you
want to research what is available. This part of the process will allow you to think about what
kind of dress you want. Look at Bridal magazines, Pinterest, and bridal related websites. Consider
making a folder to house the designs, fabric samples, and anything else that sparks your fancy.
Take your folder with you when you go shopping for your dress. This will give the consultant a
feel for what you are looking for and will provide information to serve you best. The next step in
the process is the appointment stage. Once you have an

Cheer Stole Me
Cheer stole my life away from me. We practiced mornings, afternoons, and weekends. All I ever
did was run an incessant routine, having no time for myself, my friends, or my hobbies. This is
when depression hit me. I struggled to balance school and my coach s unrealistic expectations,
and found myself breaking down slowly. My biggest dream became my biggest nightmare.
Everyday, I wanted to give everything up, but something within me said no. This was my journey
to competing nationally, 3000 miles away from home. After six months of hanging on by a thread,
I finally found myself on a National stage. The music started and my worries dissolved under the
heat and humidity of the stadium lights. I did exactly what I had done at practice a million

A tidal salt marsh is a community of plants and animals that thrive in wet saline conditions (ADBC, 2010), which rely on the tides to bring nutrients, such as oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorous. As the tide leaves the wetlands, pools are exposed which shorebirds can feed on larvae without competition from fish that was impossible during the time period of water diversion and dam construction. The land became baron; an area of waste land, until 1967, when the water originally diverted for irrigation of fields, was redirected to the lowland area. In 2006, a tidal inlet was successfully opened after 107 years, allowing the tide to flow to various parts of the wetlands which had previously been closed off (ADBC, 2010). During the process of Bolsa Chica environmental change, much has been learned about ecosystem destruction and restoration. Wetland areas are as Wright states among the most productive ecosystems on earth, rich in breeding grounds for many species of fish, shellfish, and waterfowl (2008). Interfering with the natural biogeochemical cycles can have devastating effects, completely wiping out ecosystems. Lessons learned are valuable for other restoration projects, many of which are in progress throughout the United States (U.S.). Major learning s included, the rise in water salinity when not allowed to mix with fresh water creates a hostile environment, making it inhabitable by the resident community, lack of tidal rhythm reduces ... • 3. How Hadoop Is An Apache Open Source Software ( Java... Hadoop is an Apache open source software (java framework). It runs on cluster of commodity machines and provides both distributed storage and distributed processing of huge data sets. It is capable of processing data sizes ranging from Gigabytes to Petabytes. Architecture : Similar to master / slave architecture. The master is the Namenode and the Slaves are the data nodes. The Namenode maintains and manages blocks of datanodes. They are responsible for dealing with clients requests of data. Hadoop splits the files into one or more blocks and these blocks are stored on datanodes. Each datanode is replicated to provide fault tolerance characteristic of Hadoop. Default replicator factor is 3 which can be configured. Components: 1.Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS): It is designed to run on hardware which are less expensive and the data is stored in it distributed. It is highly fault tolerance and provides high throughput access to the applications that require big data. 2.Namenode: It manages the system namespace. It stores the metadata of data blocks. The metadata is stored in the form of namespace image and edit logs on a local machine. The namenode knows the location of each datablock on the data node. 3.Secondary Namenode: It is responsible for merging the namespace image and edit log to create check points. This would help namenode to free up memory taken up by edits logs from the start to the latest check point. 4.DataNode: Stores blocks of data and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the United States over 1.2 million people are infected with HIV, and roughly 1 in 5 people are unaware they are infected (CDC, 2014) One of the best and most effective ways to reduce the spread of the virus is by creating HIV awareness, by implementing intervention programs in high risk HIV communities. This paper will provide an overall view of HIV, risk factors/health behaviors and analysis on HIV intervention programs, and the responsibilities of health educators. Overview of the health issue The disease HIV, also known as human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that is transmitted through bodily fluids that cause an attack on the body s immune system and destroys T cells, which help defend the immune system from infectious diseases (CDC, 2015 A). HIV is a prevalent public health issue because it is a preventable disease, but over 1.2 million Americans are living with the disease and the numbers keep increasing yearly (CDC, 2011 A). Also, 1 out of every 5 American living with HIV are unaware that they have the disease (CDC, 2011 B). Studies show that in 2014 there were around 51,000 new cases of HIV diagnosis (CDC, 2011 B) Adult and adolescent males from the ages of 13 and 24 years old make up 81% of all the HIV cases (CDC, 2014). However, the introduction of unique metal mixtures to the modern battlefield, as well as the insurgents use of improvised explosive devices, have resulted in the potential of embedded fragment wounds with materials whose toxicological properties are not well understood. The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute was one of the first laboratories to study the long term health effects of embedded fragments of military relevant metals. Advances in medical care also resulted in increased survival rate of wounded individuals, many of whom now carried embedded metal fragments in their bodies. Standard surgical guidelines recommended leaving embedded fragments in place, unless they could be easily removed, to lessen the collateral tissue damage that surgery can inflict. In addition, there were few indications reported in the scientific literature to indicate that embedded metal fragments left in place were a health hazard in either the short or long term. There were, however, the occasional reports of adverse health effects resulting from the long time retention of lead fragments (Stromberg, 1990; Eylon et al., 2005). The effects were usually attributed to the solubilization of lead from the fragments, as symptoms usually abated once the fragment was surgically removed (Linden et al., 1982; Beazley and Rosenthal, 1984; Magos, 1994; Gerhardsson et al., 2002). Blackwood Ballistic Pendulum Experiment 6: Blackwood Ballistic Pendulum September 18, 2013 Jamal Wright Zachary Floyd Christopher Wilson Experiment 6 Blackwood Ballistic Pendulum Jamal Wright, Zachary Floyd, Christopher Wilson Abstract Our goal of this experiment is to determine muzzle velocity by two methods: 1) employing uniform linear motion relations, the kinematic equations; 2) using the principles of conservation of energy and momentum. In this paper, we aim to validate the law of conservation of momentum. We do so by comparing results from two experiments conducted with a single ballistic launcher /pendulum apparatus. Hypothesis: The initial velocity of a ballistic pendulum can be determined using the law of conservation of momentum. Momentum ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the ball hits the ground then y = H (since the positive y axis points downward.) By measuring the distance of fall and using that acceleration due to gravity, g, the time of flight t = Tflight, can be calculated with the following transformed kinematic equation: Tflight = sqrt(2H/g) The muzzle velocity, vmuzzle, (also the intitial velocity vx0) of the ball after being fired is horizontal. From a measurement of the range, R, and using the time of flight, the muzzle velocity can be determined Vmuzzle = Ravg/Tflight The second method requires the determination of the muzzle velocity from the principle of conservation of momentum. The momentum of the ball just before it collides with the pendulum must equal the momentum of the ball and the pendulum just after the collision, pi = pf. To expand on this we see: Mvmuzzle + MV = (m + M)V, Where m is the mass of the ball, M is the mass of the pendulum and V is the velocity of the ball and the pendulum together. Note: the velocity of the ball and the pendulum, v, is initially zero. In order to find the velocity of the ball and the pendulum just after the collision we will use the principle of conservation of energy. Neglecting friction at the point of support of the pendulum, the gravitational potential energy must equal the kinetic energy of the ball and the pendulum at the bottom of the ... • 16. Implementation And Feedback Systems ( Maclay, 2015 ) Development in practice: why projects fail and how to address these failures During the last decades, the way Development is managed and how it addresses problems have evolved. As conventional approaches failed to meet objectives, successive actions have tried to make development practice more efficient and participatory. Nonetheless, difficulties persist, with an increasing trade off between achieving equity through participation and the efficiency of managerialism. Linear, pre designed implementation models like the blueprint are still the main approaches to put theory into practice (Maclay, 2015). In this context and in line with the material studied in the course, I will argue that development projects face three types of problems: operational, cognitive and power. To enhance project effectiveness, these call for different complementary solutions: more flexibility in implementation and feedback systems (Maclay, 2015); a balance between participation and top down authority with increased accountability (Brett, 2003); and the empowerment of the local considering the political context (Andrews et al., 2013; Mohan and Stokke, 2000). To be sure, these strategies are no panacea. Nonetheless, they can help overcome some glaring failures in the current approaches, while any new problem should be analysed in an iterative problem solving process through learning systems that could help design better measures in the future. Virtuous leaders let a nation succeed when its at its greatest peril. The effectiveness of the leader allows the nation to be great and the fulfill their mission. Over the years, the view on what an effective government is has changed. In the 6th Century China, a Philosopher named Lao Tzu saw an effective government as one that used war last, that the ideal form of governing is to have minimal effect on peoples lives. In the 13th Century Italy, Machiavelli, a diplomat and philosopher, advised that the prince should be well versed in the art of war, and should exercise qualities and laws that bring them praise so their position is not disputed. While both views seem to be extreme of a spectrum it will be clear the Machiavelli s Prince is the better leader for the modern society. On the Subject of war and conflict, Lao Tzu deems it a last resort as it leads to suffering no matter the outcome. When a country goes counter to the Tao, warheads are stockpiled outside the cities. (Kindle Locations 1934 1935) Lao Tzu here is stating that once we stray from the ideal path, pain and suffering will follow. Fear is the greatest enemy and is what leads to conflict. Similarly, in many circumstances, no matter how dire an event might seem, there is always a beacon of hope amongst doleful situations. From every ending comes a new beginning. The poem, November Cotton Flower , written by Jean Toomer, describes (the conditions when slaves were under the Harlem Renaissance) the conditions in which slaves were under during the Harlem Renaissance where there seems to be no prospect for a brighter future for the slaves in the society. Throughout the poem, Toomer develops his theme of hope and desire for a brighter future by exhausting literary devices such as metaphors, structure, and imagery. The November Cotton Flower is a poem that not only depicts a late autumn setting where the cotton season comes to an end, but also captures the agony and essence of slavery with the usage of metaphors and similes. As Thora describes him, Grandda warned, Your children...will forever hang their heads in shame (Hartnett 76 77). Da finally decides to enter the war, but returns with alive. As a way of permanently preventing Da from jeopardizing Grandda s career success, he implants the idea of moving into the country into Da s head. Similar to entering into the war, Da also succumbs to Grandda s persuasion, and moves into the country with the rest of the Flute family. This dysfunctional relationship between Da and his father is a likely cause for Da s cowardly nature. Grandda s cold hearted nature and disinterest towards his son continuously haunts Da for the rest of his life. Rajvinder Singh, the protagonist of the film, comes from a traditional Sikh family but decides at a young age that he will no longer wear a turban, and will not embrace his culture as much as his parents, especially father, would like. Darvesh (the father) represents traditional values and Sikh culture, and highlights the generational differences between diasporic families in Canada. Throughout the filmhe is fighting to have Raj follow in the familybusiness and focus on things he deems important; hockey is not one of them. Although this concept of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many scenes in the film where, for only English speakers, there are not translations as to what is being said. Although for some this means not understanding the dialogue in the film, it sparks the thought who is this film really for? I found it refreshing that although on the surface this film felt very simple and designed for a Western audience, there were still many elements that would be lost unless the viewer had intimate ties to the Sikh community. I found there were many jokes that did not translate, even if they were said in English, and many references that would not be understood unless actually researched. One example of this can be seen in the credits of the movie when there is a combination of famous North American artists (such as Drake and Ludacris) coupled with an iconic Indian performer like Akshay Kumar. Although many non Indian viewers may not know who he is, the pairing with recognizable North American artists alludes to the equal popularity. Breakaway not only contrasts iconic North American and Hindi performers but also sights and sounds. The music in this film is quite powerful as well and contrasts against some of the iconic Canadian scenes. For example, in many of the hockey scenes, there is loud Punjabi music (as they call it in the film), taking the viewer away from their preconceived notions of what music/ noises are more typically heard and thought ... Mayan Droughts Upon reaching Central America in the 1500s, European conquistadores were greeted by an unanticipated sight imposing limestone cities abandoned, left to be reclaimed by the jungle. These metropolises once belonged to the Maya civilization, but were deserted starting in the ninth century for reasons yet unknown. Although the abandonment of these once thriving cities marked the end of the Maya Classic period, lasting 250 A.D. to 900 A.D., it did not mark the end of the Maya civilizationas a whole. The Maya civilization would continue to survive up to and past European arrival, but never again at the height reached during the Classic period. Minerals were collected by drilling cores in Belize s famous underwater cave, known as the Blue Hole, as well as lagoons nearby. As the Blue Hole and other lagoons are surrounded on all sides by thick walls of coral reefs, they act like a big bucket or a sediment trap , accumulating the excess sediment brought in by rivers and streams (Ghose). Furthermore, this excess sediment is swept into these lagoons during storms or wetter periods. In the event that it rained, the water would eat away at the volcanic rocks of the region, which contain titanium. As a result, this free titanium would flow in rivers and streams, which, in turn, would flow into the lagoons. Layer after layer would settle on top of the previous, providing an accurate record of the historical climate of this region. Droxler, the head researcher, and his team would then analyze the samples, looking for the ratio of titanium to aluminum as relatively low ratios of titanium to aluminum correspond to periods with less rainfall (Ibid). His team found that during the timeframe of 800 A.D. to 1000 A.D., there were not the usual five or six tropical cyclones every two decades, but only one or two, signifying there was less than usual rainfall. Whether it be flower beds or a vegetable garden, all your hard work in the beginning will set you up for an enjoyable summer. Here a few different types of beds that you may want to try. Raised concrete block vegetable garden You may ask yourself why you would want a raised concrete garden? Concrete blocks absorb the heat all day long and maintain the root heat long into the night, warm roots have produce many more vegetables for me. You need to measure your space and take this into consideration when planning your new project. The cost may seem expensive at first, but remember these blocks will last you a life time, so it is more than likely a one time purchase. I make my concrete block two blocks high, spread out plastic, line the bottom with rocks that I gather through out the yard or wood line, these are used for proper drainage. Fill with dirt, fertilizer and soil nutrients and plant your plants. You can put a decorative spin on the blocks by painting them, paint them a plain color or show your artist side and do a mural. What ever you do make it uniquely yours. You will be so surprised how much more you yield after putting together this garden, It actually doubled what I usually get. This means that the Marine Corps logisticsmission, at all commands and support levels, is to generate MAGTFs that are rapidly deployable, self reliant, self sustaining, and flexible and that can rapidly reconstitute (Logistics Operations, 1999). While the Marine Corps is unmatched in its ability to be the most rapid responding force across the globe, a deficiency exists that should be addressed. Over the past decade, there have been numerous successful innovations in ground and aviation logistics, but they have lacked in standardization or integration within the MAGTF. Emerging operating concepts such as disaggregated MAGTF operations and seabasing, along with current fiscal constraints, are driving the need to further modernize and integrate MAGTF logistics in order to optimize support to the warfighter (Borrelli Hodge, 2013). Independently, the logistical concepts and systems that exist for the ground elements and the aviation elements are proven to be effective and efficient, however, when the aviation and ground elements work in concert the response of logistical support is hindered. The process of counseling in this aspect should start with a needs assessment in the clients spirituality. Asking open ended questions is a good way to begin exploring about the clients needs. In this way, the counselor can keep track on the spiritual growth and maturity of a client if ever he/she has one. This is also important for the counselor to have a gist of the over all concern of the client as well as to have an awareness of the client s spiritual outlook. It is also important for a counselor to explore with a client on how they view life in a spiritual context. In this way, it may assist the counseling process tremendously. Specifically, when a counselor wants to specialize in Christian counseling, he/she should be aware of how they deal with their clients. One perfect example is the use and timing of employing biblical scriptures to the clients to aid in their healing.
