Living to Die and Dying to Live: A Perversion of the Legend of Lazarus The legend
of Lazarus (also known as Saint Lazarus or Lazarus of Bethany) is well known. In
the original story, Jesus of Nazareth raises him from the dead after four days as an
example of the almighty power of God. In fact, this tale is so prominent that it is the
namesake of a medical anomaly, songs, and, most relevantly, Lady Lazarus by Sylvia
Plath. Most incarnations of the story of Lazarus maintain a sensational and awe
inspiring nature; however, it would be unlike Plath to construct a piece with the same
upbeat and simplistic tone as the Biblical myth. Instead, Plath chooses to construct ...
Plath, in the second and third stanzas, describes her right foot as a paperweight and
her face as a Jewish linen (lines 6 9). Her right foot specifically being a
paperweight holds some Biblical significance. The right direction, on Judgement
Day, is associated with salvation while the left is associated with atonement. The
connotation of a paperweight is something heavy that holds down what would
otherwise fly away. When these two symbols are combined, readers can conclude
that Plath s hope for salvation is the only thing tethering her to a world she would
otherwise leave on a permanent basis. Additionally, Plath s comparison of her face
to Jewish linen is, as mentioned previously, a way she equates her suffering to that
of a Holocaust victim; however, Jewish linen was also used to wrap the namesake
of the poem, Lazarus. In the fourth stanza, Plath calls for onlookers to remove the
cloth from her face (line 10). The removal is a parallel between Plath and the
original Lazarus with a twist. In her incarnation of the unveiling, Plath s face is not
as it once was. It still remains decomposed in order to show that she truly perished
and remains affected by it. The allusion to Lazarus furthers in the sixth stanza when
Plath references the grave cave (line 17). This clearly refers to the tomb of Lazarus, a
cave in which Jesus had risen him from the dead. Shortly thereafter, Plath talks about

It is summer in Ghana and I m walking down a block in my neighborhood. The air is
hazy and dense and the smell of food fills every corner. A city that never used to have
any of foreign foods, now filled with the aroma and signs of fast food restaurants. As I
walked, I realize that there was only one whole food market. Meanwhile, a
McDonald s and Kentucky Fried Chicken were seen on multiple corners. Another
thing I noticed: the majority of people entering the fast food market are from places
that were once filled with only traditionalists. A region where its former citizens
used to invest their time in cooking local traditional food and sold them to the
public and families. These same communities have now become so westernized that
they neglect the traditional side of diet. Instead, everyone now focus on the new fast

The Raton Basin is a structurally low area located on the western edge of the Great
Plains in the United States of America (Geldon, 1985). The basin covers the
southeastern portion of Colorado and the northeastern part of New Mexico (Flores
and Bader, 1999). The Raton Basin was first discovered to be coalbearing in 1841
(Flores and Bader, 1999). Since then the production of coal, gas, and hydrocarbon
resources have been mined from the basin. The Raton Basinwas formed mainly in the

2007). However the units that are focused on in this paper were deposited in the Late

best when children are provided nurturing, and short term care until they can be

the stay is longer, with 30% remaining in temporary care for over two years. Staying
in the system is detrimental to the child s well being. The foster care system is an
unsuccessful intervention for children that cultivates development, health and mental

Where a child ends up being placed is determined by child welfare and the judicial
system. However, how the placement is decided should depend upon a child social
history, mental history and where they are developmentally. Caseworkers are often
overloaded which leads to the children being placed in the wrong type of homes,
which means the children are moved frequently. When children are frequently
moved, it leads to disruptions that make it hard to form stable attachments, and
