Bilingualism And Bilingualism
According to a 2006 European Commission survey, 56% of respondents said they could speak a
language other than their mother tongue. In many countries, the proportion of bilinguals is much
higher. For example, 99% of Luxembourg and 95% of Latvian populations speak more than one
language. Even in the United States, where English is pre dominantly used as a single language, a
large number of people using non English languages at home have increased by 140% since 1980.
Thus, bilingualism is an extensive cultural, linguistic, and cognitive phenomenon that is extensively
carried out in modern society. Bilingualism bridges the understanding of the world around us,
communicating with others, promoting the sharing of cultural phenomena. Many ... Show more

In many studies, bilingual learners brain can have better attentiveness and the ability to switch tasks
than a mono lingual learner s brain because of their cognitive ability to control to suppress one
language while using another language or switch from one language to another language
simultaneously. Bilingualism also positively affects learners academic progress (Saer, D. J. 1923).
Moreover, studies on bilingual language processing have shown that when bilingual speakers, listen
to, read, or produce sentences, linguistic competency in both languages is activated, even when the
speaker uses one language (Kroll, J. F., Bobb, S. C., Hoshino, N. (2014). This cross language
activation can be detected in both beginners and highly skilled bilinguals and can be found at various
levels of language processing system, such as lexicon, phonology, and grammar. In particular,
cognitive research on bilingualism suggests that a bilingual speaker s second language, which is not
used in word recognition and language production, is being suppressed and the language that tends to
be self controlled is the native language of the speaker, not the second foreign language, implying that
the native language is indeed compromised to accommodate the second language. The control system
used to cognitively prohibit and switch languages is a control system commonly used for

Mitochondrial Pathway Of Mitochondrial And Mitochondrial...
1.2.2. Mitochondrial pathway
The mitochondrial pathway, also called intrinsic pathway, because it is initiated from inside the cell.
Various stimuli such as growth factors withdrawal, DNA damage, hypoxia, and oxidative stress can
induce apoptosis through this cascade. These insults cause increasing permeability of the outer
mitochondrial membrane and opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) pore which
is controlled by members of the Bcl 2 family proteins. This large family of proteins is defined by the
presence of conserved Bcl 2 homology domains (BH1 to BH4). Up to 30 Bcl 2 family genes have
been identified in mammals, which have either pro apoptotic or anti apoptotic functions. Some of the
anti apoptotic members include Bcl 2 itself, Bcl XL, Bcl w, BAG and Mcl 1 which possess all
domains of BH1 to BH4. The pro apoptotic family proteins can be divided into two subgroups:
consists of Bak, Bax, and Bok with possess BH1 to BH3 domains, and Bad, Bid, Bik, BNIP3, Bim,
Bmf, Blk, Hrk, Noxa, Puma, and Spike) that only possesses BH3 domain [Cory, 2002; Mund, 2003].
It is believe that BH3 only proteins interfere with the fine tuned balance of homo or hetero
oligomerization between pro apoptotic multidomains (eg., Bax/Bak) and anti apoptotic members (eg.,
Bcl 2/Bcl XL) (Figure 3). In general, oligomers of Bak, Bax, and Bok induce PMT, either by forming
channels by themselves or by interacting with components of the PMT [Antonsson, 2000]. Bad can
also heterodimerize

Radar In World War Two
One of the most important technological achievements of World War Two was the invention of radar.
For the first time in history, commanders could see hundreds of miles past their own vision and
develop strategies to counter enemy movements. Radar had enormous effects on the outcome of World
War Two and was a determining factor in how naval and aerial strategy developed into what it is
today. Applicable in both offensive and defensive strategies, radar can be used as an early warning
device or as a helping mechanism for aerial bombers and naval ships to find their targets more
effectively. Defensively, radar played a large role against aerial and naval attacks throughout the war.
World War Two was the first time that airplanes were used as ... Show more content on

Suddenly, poor weather conditions and the darkness of night were no longer problems for naval
leaders and fighters. Radar allowed ship commanders and airman to see without light, and be more
precise with their targets. The ability to attack at night was immensely different from previous wars.
Previously, the darkness made fighting impossible due to lack of technology for targeting. With radar,
this was now possible. To attack from the air or by ship at night was a formidable threat to ships and
land bases. Radar was used to locate enemy ships and launch planes accurately from large distances.
Attacking without ever seeing the enemy was also now a normal element to naval warfare. From using
radar to launch planes at an enemy hundreds of miles away to using it to find the coordinates of enemy
ships and using naval gunfire, seeing the actual enemy was no longer necessary. One instance where
radar played a formidable role in an attack was at the battle of Midway. Midway was the turning point
in the war where Japan lost two of their aircraft carriers due to radar locating their exact locations
(Lambert). With this information American forces were able to send dive bombers to the exact
coordinates to destroy the vital Japanese carriers. Also using radar for reconnaissance was a
determining factor for the offensive campaigns. Being able to detect where the enemy is and where
they are going to be made the planning of operations more adjustable to change. The use of radar
required a broad communication chain in order to inform leaders of the findings. With the increased
communications, radar findings could be announced to the whole fleet and its commanders. Increasing
the pre battle intelligence by increasing communication, commanders could use the radar finding and
direct ships and aircraft

Crohn s Disease Research Paper
Inflammatory Bowel Disease, also known as IBD, is comprised of two major disorders: Crohn s
disease or ulcerative colitis (UC). Both conditions are characterized by inflammation of the
gastrointestinal tract. Although Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis share similarities in symptoms,
treatment, and prevention there are also distinct characteristics between the diseases.
Ulcerative colitis is classified as a chronic inflammation that involves only the large intestine. In UC,
the inflammation starts at the rectum and spreads into the colon continuously, developing ulcers only
in the inner most lining of the colon. Compared to UC, Crohn s disease is characterized by skip
lesions that resemble a patchy cobblestone appearance, generated anywhere ... Show more content on

The main concern of physicians is to help patients regulate their symptoms and immune system better,
through diet, medication, and possibly surgery. Although the food a person eats doesn t trigger the
diseases, it can help control aggravation of symptoms. It s important to maintain a healthy and
soothing diet that helps reduce your symptoms, replace lost nutrients, and promote healing. Many
people find that soft, bland foods cause less discomfort than spicy, fatty or high fiber foods.
Medication such as, steroids and antibiotics would be prescribed to treat symptoms of diarrhea,
abdominal pain, and inflammation. As I stated above the first concern of physicians is get their
immune system better. Cigarette smoking is slightly controversial; it will increase the risk for Crohn s
disease, but may be protective against ulcerative colitis. Clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of
nicotine patches are still being examined to show any relief of symptoms for people with UC, while
not promoting other health complications of smoking. Stress, which most of us deal with on a daily
basis, may have a role in the exacerbation of symptoms in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Approximately one quarter of patients with ulcerative colitis, medical therapy is not completely
successful. Under these circumstances, surgery may be considered as a last resort. This operation
involves the removal of the entire large colon, known

Cement Planter Incident
For the past week, I have spent every waking hour trying to figure out an incident that occurred in my
front yard: what had happened to a 400 pound cement flower planter, to be exact. On one relaxing
Saturday evening in late November 2015, my sister came to visit and had noted our cement planter
had been tipped over. With no account of who did this or when it had happened, I delved into the
mystery of how this massive planter had tipped over. Before I get into this story, I d like to point out
something I never thought about before I attempted to resolve this mystery. That is, the phenomena
described as seeing an object every day, and then the object is moved or taken away and the change is
not noticed. For instance, how many times do you drive past the same scenery every day? Same ...

Looking at the aerial view of my house, it can be noted that a car could effectively turn around using
my driveway without having to pull up much farther than the planters. Who had pulled up far enough
into the driveway to turn around and hit the planter? As one who nurses doubt, this fallen planter has
caused uncertainty beyond belief. If it wasn t my sister or two friends, who had needed to pull up into
the driveway far enough to hit the planter when they were backing out? As much as I want to be sure
on this situation, I simply can t be.
When I had first delved into this mystery, a conclusion seemed so feasible. I would just have to talk to
the right people, ask the right questions, and the planter tipper would just become one solid answer.
Now, over a week later, I feel like shaking everyone by the shoulders, like an irritated policeman. Who
tipped this planter, and why didn t they fess up about it? I suppose some mysteries will never be
solved, and we will have to pick up our toppled flower planter and carry

Economic And Political Inequalities Of America
Economic and Political Inequalities
Public subsidies are allowing for multinational companies like Walmart and McDonald s to pay such
low wages, which in turn provides social services like food stamps, Medicaid and public housing. Out
of all U.S. companies Wal mart employees are the largest recipients of public welfare, receiving about
$6.2 billion a year in mostly federal subsidies. Because they are making such nominal hourly wages
these services are essential for the well being of the American public. Workers and consumers alike
are encapsulated within this system, with the Walton family even controlling a large portion of the
region s banking system. Jim Walton, son of Sam Walton, controls 96% of Arvest Bank. His father and
mother purchased the Bank of Bentonville in 1961 when it had a holding of approximately $3.5
million. Today, it controls over $15 billion of assets. If you look at their growth, it is clear that Arvest,
the Walton banking industry, is following the path of Walmart and headed toward the path of
globalization.
Public policy is a driving factor behind all of this. Walmart holds supreme legal power due to its vast
wealth, meaning stakeholders are able to pay off any organization or individual that stands in the way
of their economic development goals. From Hillary s involvement with Walmart to Bill s signing
signing into effect NAFTA and WTO, the Clinton administration is a direct example of how political
ties can contribute to the development of a

Commodities And The Stock Market
When comes to commodities and the stock market, investors are quick to blame oil prices for causing
market volatility. Granted this is case more often than not, other commodities such as corn and gold
have a tremendous impact on daily stock prices. Global commodities are typically broken down into 4
basic headers; energy, metals, agriculture, meat livestock, and consumer. Energy, as we know, watch
the most heavily scrutinized assets including oil and natural gases. Metals, on the other hand, track our
most precious assets, gold and silver. While agriculture, meat livestock and consumer observe corn,
coffee and live cattle to name a few. Since commodities, and not just oil, are key inputs of many
goods, they have a profound impact on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obviously when oil prices are volatile, earnings from company s like Exxon Mobil will fluctuate.
Investors are quick to take notice of this, causing share prices of energy companies to fall. However,
what you may not be aware of is that oil is a key input into a variety of goods and products we use
daily. Retail manufactures often use oil to make plastics or fertilizers found at your local Walmart. By
extension, when the price of oil rises, major retailers pass on rising costs onto consumers in the form
of higher prices. If they aren t able to pass along the cost increase, then retailers face an adverse
impact on margins, subsequently hurting stock prices. Moreover, oil prices have a directly effect what
you end up paying at theh pump. When oils prices are high, consumer spending typically suffers since
consumers must dig deeper to on necessities and fuel. Auto manufactures often feel this effect through
falling sales of its higher margin SUVs and trucks.
Gold
Unlike oil, gold prices indirectly follows movements in the market. Throughout history gold has been
viewed as a counter cyclical asset, which means the precious metals gains value during market down
turns. Since gold is found all over the world and holds high intrinsic value, it is often viewed as a
universal currency. When the outlook of the equity markets looks bleak or corporate earnings are
destined for doom, investors will flock to the precious

Essay on Scarlet Letter Reflective Mono
In the 1600 amp;#8217;s, in a small town in a market place, in a time when religion was the only base
of all morals among people, and the government worked on behalf of god. A small town is filled with
commotion after a woman has been prosecuted and sentenced with punishment for adultery. Her
punishment is to bear a Scarlet letter, an amp;#8220;A ; on her bosom, for the rest of her living days.
The woman has born a child who she is always seen with, whom is her one and only companion.
Years after the sentence, the child now seven years of age, she lives her life, making way by stitching
garments for her fellow towns people. A certain air of mystery still surrounds her, and a great deal of

that I saw the brand clearly. It was a work of art. Never have I seen such good stitching. Standing in
the light, her hair taken back, looking without expression. A picturesque woman, voluptuous breasts
and smooth curves seem to be noticeable even though the scarlet letter seemed to steal much of the
attention. Her complexion so fair, and so white in the light. Her dress, though simple, hung on her like
a she was wearing a garment made of gold. The letter, as if it were a large broach, so majestic, it was
almost ridiculous to think it as a mark of shame. I moved closer to her general direction, hoping that I
could get a closer look, as if that would let me into her mind, or into her thoughts. My curiosity grew
larger, and I wondered how she felt knowing all eyes were upon her chest, upon the mark. She showed
no signs of emotion, not a smile, let alone a frown, as if none around her existed. Could she feel the
eyes burning upon her? Well as sure as day, she turned around and looked me in the eye. I froze. I saw

The Princess Bride Analysis
In the film, The Princess Bride, the director Rob Reiner introduced many themes into the plot. A
significant theme in the film, The Princess Bride, is Intelligence . Had intelligence not have been a
contributing factor to the plot, there would be a completely different outcome at the end. Deception,
outwitting, outsmarting, all contribute to how the story ends. An excellent example of this is when
Westley and Vizzini had a battle of wit to win the princess, as Vizzini had kidnapped her. The shots
used were mostly close ups, as the two of them had no real power over the other. Westley was the one
leading the challenge. This involved Vizzini choosing which wine goblet had the iodine powder. Of
course, Westley had developed an immunity to iodine powder, so he had put iodine powder in both
goblets. Vizzini, thinking he was smart, continuously questioned which goblet it could be in, making it
look like he was stalling. He eventually picked one, drunk it, and thought he had won. He had not.
After Vizzini collapsed to the ground, Westley escorted Buttercup away and shared some of his tales
to her. These experiences he had experienced caused this Man in black to be almost terrifying to
Buttercup, as she had not known yet that he was in fact, Westley. Buttercup explains to him about her
lost love, and Westley simply mocks her. You mock my pain! She tells him, upset by his lack of
caring. He just replies, Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says different is selling something. He
says this with ease as he knows exactly her pain. Westley s speech pattern was very proper, and he was
quite knowledgeable in his many experiences. He knew about the terrors of the fire swamp, and
seemed to know lots of useful information to help him and Buttercup get away. He had experienced
many other situations that helped contribute to his vast knowledge. Having a high level of intelligence
also contributes to your authority over people. When Westley was climbing the mountain to get to
Inigo, a low shot was used showing that currently, Inigo had power. Another example, Prince
Humperdinck, being royal, had quite a bit of authority

Men Have Control Over Women In The Story Of An Hour
Some people believe that once they marry they are giving up their freedom. In some cases, this is true,
especially in the late 19th century. Woman during this period were marrying as young as 15 years old
and were marrying men well into their 30s. This caused a lack of communication and love between a
married couple and usually resulted in the man having control over the woman. The idea of men
having control over women in marriage can be seen in Kate Chopin s The Story of an Hour. In this
short story, Louise Mallard learns of her husband s death due to a fatal train accident. Sad and alone at

Specific Aims
The specific objective of this study is to establish the relationship between attention and child
television programs by improving on existing research. The study aims to focus on the impact of
different types of television on the cognitive attention of children.
Children s education and development are important topics, and parents always want to educate their

however, most parents are not so confused about how to select television shows for their children.

Usually, there are two kinds of children television shows, live action shows and cartoons. There has
emerged research, which argued that viewing television cartoons could have immediate negative
effects on young children s cognitive function including self regulation and working memory (Lillard
and Peterson, 2011). Therefore, watching cartoons is not a good idea to entertain children. There is
increased concern that increased exposure to television has a negative impact on the cognitive
development of a child. It has been linked to late language development and the development of
attention disorders (Landhuis, Poulton, Welch Hancox, 2007). A majority of studies conducted on the
impact of television have not compared different types of content.
According to the CDC, the number of children getting ADHD is rising rapidly (CDC, 2015).
Correspondingly, research has indicated that there is an increasing number of children watching

worried about the impact of the content that their children watch on television because of warning
from research findings. They are also worried about the children live action shows such as Kid Nation,

Theme Of Social Class In Pride And Prejudice
Most living creatures abide by a social structure of some sort. Between groups of animals there is the
dominance of the Alpha, and the submission of the Omega. Among humans, there is a similar setup,
but rather than size and strength, other factors often come into play. Wealth and status with others
make for a bigger social ladder among human beings, and this can cause many weaknesses in the way
people treat one another, and think. There are some who embrace these problems, and some who wish
to change it. Sometimes, it is something as simple as a piece of writing that addresses these issues. In
her novel Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen uses her characters to break common social class structure,
and reveal that it is actions that define a person, and not circumstance.
In Pride and Prejudice, many of the characters reveal a depth that reaches beyond what is perceived by
even other characters, already revealing the kinks in social class. The main male protagonist, Mr.
Fitzwilliam Darcy is one of the most controversial characters, and from the very beginning has two
sides to him that show a person underneath the circumstantial shell. In the article Themes and
Construction: Pride and Prejudice it is noted that What separates Elizabeth and Darcy from the silly
minor characters [...] is their ability and willingness to learn and grow, to overcome their initial
shortcomings (Themes). It is undeniable that Darcy began with amount considerable amount of both

Fire In Fahrenheit 451
Over time, fire has molded the world of today, welding the Earth through its perpetual blaze. Fire
kindles life, but provokes death. Fire provides warmth, but sparks devastation. From wild

today. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, fire burns throughout many aspects of the story,
symbolizing permanent destruction, evil, and happiness and protection in order to disclose the theme
that the ability to learn and think for oneself is a vital aspect of society.
In this Bradbury uses symbolism in order to portray fire as permanent destruction. After the firemen

The wild fire in this situation denotes evil because the flames burning in his eyes are representative of
the evil motives within Montag for destroying books which are vital to many people. One morning, as
Montag examines the other fireman with whom he works, Bradbury articulates that Montag looked at
these men whose faces were sunburnt by a thousand real and ten thousand imaginary fires (33). Fire

Reusing Plastic Bottles Research
Introduction:
Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times and 50% of the plastic we use,
we only use once and is thrown away. There is initiate ways for plastic bottles to be reused in a
scientific way. We are investigating how the air pressure we can create in a bottle will affect how high
or low it travels. In the process we will be reusing plastic bottles. Will the product inside of the bottle
be significant to the explosion it will make? If a certain amount of alcohol is inserted in the bottle will
the rocket malfunction?

Although heavy and brittle, hardened clay and glass were used for storage. Some natural substances
were sticky and moldable. Rubber wasn t very useful for storage because it eventually lost its ability
to leap back into shape and became sticky when heated. The way plastics are manufactured has
evolved from the use of natural plastic materials to the use of chemically modified, natural materials
and finally to completely synthetic molecules. Early plastics were bio derived materials, which are
organic polymers. In 1600 BC, Mesoamericans used natural rubber for balls, bands, and figurines. In
1839, Charles Goodyear discovered a process in which sulfur reacted with crude rubber when heated
and then cooled. The rubber became resilient upon cooling, it could stretch, but it snapped back to its
original shape. It also retained its flexibility when heated. We now know that the sulfur forms
chemical bonds between adjacent rubber polymer strands. The bonds cross link the polymer strands,
allowing them to go back to normal when stretched. Goodyear had discovered the process now known
as vulcanization, which made rubber more

Who Was The Greatest Leader In Ww2 Essay
Who was the greatest leader in World War 2? Why
Greatest leader in WW2
World War 2 had many great leaders, Winston Churchill, Dwight Eisenhower, Hirohito, and many
more but in complete honesty when thinking of World War 2 another man comes to mind. That man
name is Adolf Hitler. He may have done many horrible things but one can not deny how great of a
leader he was. So although he was not a great person due to the damage he had done but he was truly a
fantastic leader due to how he rose to power, how popular he was in germany, and what he was able to
accomplish.
Adolf hitler first became known in WW1. He served in the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment
in 1914. Then a couple years later in 1920 he was discharged from the army and then takes
responsibility for Publicity and Propaganda. By leading that he was able to change the party name to

Now since he was villian many of his accomplishments were not good in our eyes. In world war 2
when Adolf Hitler was the leader of germany he did alot of bad things. The most obvious is
Concentration Camps and in other words the extermination of Jews. Hitler ended up killing millions
and millions of jews and really did think of it as an accomplishment. Another thing was how many
wars he was a part of and actually caused. Hitler won many of the wars if not most of the wars he was
a part of. Hitler believed his army was superior but he didn t think he would be able to rule the world.
His plan was to just build a greater German empire but was shocked when France and Britain declared
war on him when invading Poland. After that his success started to fade. He lost more battles and
germany was once again defeated in another World War. Hitler decided to avoid facing his
consequences and ultimately chose to end his

In order for the rice to growth, the rice fields need to be flooded, which mean it need water all the
time. According to Richard Plant, a agriculture engineer at University of California Davis, he claim
that in 2004 the water use for rice faming require 150,000 ha m of irrigation input for each field
(Richard 465). The measurement for water he uses is in hectare meter, and one hectare meter of water
is about two and a half million galloons of water. The amount of water require for rice farming is ten
times more than any other crops are grown in the state (Richard 473). California is a sunny state,
which mean most of the water in the rice field will be lost to evaporation. In Richard research, he
found out in 2004 approximate 45,000 ha m of water left the system through evapotranspiration
(Richard 468). There is very little regulation on how the water is transported to the field. Due to that
the lack of regulation, there is approximate of water run off average was 30 ha m each year (Richard
470). Rice farming is an inefficient use of water in California. Average a family California uses about
two hundred galloons of water each day. The amount of water run off in one rice field alone is about
one hundred thousand more than one family uses (Yuknis 570). California should not allow rice
framing because of the inefficient of water usage. If there is no rice faming in California, than a lot of
water will be save. Combine

During the turn of the latter portion of the nineteenth century, many authors wrote literature with an
American Realism approach. An approach that gave others an in depth look at conditions happening in
the country. Charles W. Chesnutt was one of them. Chesnutt, author of The Goophered Grapevine ,
writes a story that represents the sentiments of that time: the north was in the south, yet the south was
resistant. The reason for this invasion was to reconstruct after the Civil War. This story shows the

There is a power struggle of these two characters from the very beginning they are both narrating the
story. Most, if not, all, stories are given one narrator for the story the same thing goes for plays. The
northerner is not more of a narrator than that of Julius himself. This shows one of the first conflicts
that must be dealt with in the story: Who is going to be in charge because there cannot be two bosses.
In the Theatre world of terms this is called a moment of intrusion. The moment of intrusion is when a
character(s) breaks up what was already set in place sort of like The Given . The former plantation is
the stasis a quiet, peaceful environment. The stasis is what the reader already realizes as the setting, it
is what we are familiar with in the story and we know how it starts out. The northerner has now
become the intruder of the story, he wants the plantation and plans to take it and make it his. This
moment of intrusion displays a conflict and now there must be a challenger Julius. The challenger,
Julius, is the character who seeks to maintain the stasis; someone who wants to maintain their order
that all are comfortable with. Julius is unwilling to see this, the North, come to fruition and now has
the task of the challenger the one who makes sure the intruder is not successful. From the moment

Plethysmograph Essay
The History of Polygraph
Since the beginning of time, people have been looking for ways to distinguish the truth from the lies in
people who were suspected of committing crimes. Many techniques were tried over the centuries,
many of these techniques stemmed from ridiculous and cruel. Many of these techniques were based on
the assumption that a physiological reaction would have occurred when a person was confronted with
details specific events. When questioned, the person s physiological reaction to these events would
show symptoms that they were either being honest or deceitful.

Larson was a police officer who developed the original lie detector. Larson named his instrument the
polygraph. Polygraph is a Greek word that means many writings and Larson used this since his
instrument was able to read several physiological responses at the same time as well as document
these responses. By using his polygraph instrument, Larson was the first person to continuously and
simultaneously measure the changes in a person s pulse rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate while
being interrogated. He was successful in his criminal investigations.
Leonarde Keeler
In 1925, Leonarde Keeler create a polygraph instrument that used inked pens which recorded the
changes in a person s blood pressure, pulse rate and respiratory patterns. In 1938, Keeler refined his
instrument by adding a third component for the detection of deception, this was called the psycho
galvanometer. This component measured changes in a person s skin electrical resistance while being
questioned. This paved way to the polygraph as we know it today. In 1948, Leonarde Keeler founded
the first polygraph school, the Keeler Polygraph Institute based in Chicago, Illinois.

Intro
Hi there! Welcome in the east wing! This wing is all going to be about the 7 wonders of the ancient

at Ephesus and so on! Some of them you might know about and well ... some of them you didn t! So
now stop reading this and have fun going back in time!
The great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest monument on the list of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. It
is also the last one standing.
The great pyramid was built between 2584 and 2561 BCE for the fourth dynasty Khufu (in Greek;
Cheops). It took approximately 20 years and 20,000 workers to complete the construction. But they
never used slaves. Lots of farmers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All the bluestones for the construction are imported from places up to 225 km! So how did they
manage to get stones that weigh more than 25 tons to the place where they are now? It s still a
mystery. There are some speculations that it s done with boats or partially by glaciers.
Funfact: Stonehenge went on the auction block in 1915. It s previous owner died in WWI. It was sold
for £ 6600, and three years later donated to the British government.
Statue of Athena in the Parthenon
The statue of Athena in the Parthenon is also not on the list of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. But
with the fact that the Parthenon itself is an amazing structure ALSO The statue of Athena used to be
standing there...How can it not be on the list??
The magnificent temple in Athens was built between 447 and 432 B.C. It was dedicated to their
goddess Athena (Goddess of wisdom, craft and war).
The temple was constructed to give a home to the statue of Athena, which is also made by Pheidias.

Discrimination is a long word, difficult pronunciation, tough to spell; yet, usage is exceedingly
common. Righteous teaching discrimination is simple to define. Unfair, unjust, underserved treatment
upon one is my views of discrimination. Discrimination is done intentionally. One cannot state unfair
treatment upon an induvial was mistaken.
Discrimination is highly found in the workplace. Workplace discrimination is instituted mainly by

Consequently, this group of consumers possesses the greatest growth potential. In connection with this
growth potential, Starbucks also started Hear Music Coffeehouse stores that offer in store music CD
burning services. Starbucks further started to open Media Bars where customers can create their own
mix of CDs. This is Starbucks first phase of a multi phased national rollout (Starbucks, 2006). Most
likely these creative efforts will boost growth from the younger patorns and music lovers.
On the other hand, the older generations may be reluctant to be attracted to Starbucks. Rather, they
may just visit a local coffee shop instead. Therefore this market segment may not grow as fast as the
younger generations. Furthermore, a market segment that has declining potential is the busy working
professionals. Because of their busy schedule, these working professionals, males and females alike,
may just brew their own coffees in the office space. Another discouraging factor is the much higher
price of Starbucks coffee products. As a general rule, Starbucks does not offer promotional prices on
its products, which tend to be higher than those of competitors (Wikipedia, 2006). As people grow
older, they may be more conscientious to their spending. Regardless of continued future growth
potentials, Starbucks faces some drawbacks. In an effort to increase sales, Starbucks started to print

  • 2. Bilingualism And Bilingualism According to a 2006 European Commission survey, 56% of respondents said they could speak a language other than their mother tongue. In many countries, the proportion of bilinguals is much higher. For example, 99% of Luxembourg and 95% of Latvian populations speak more than one language. Even in the United States, where English is pre dominantly used as a single language, a large number of people using non English languages at home have increased by 140% since 1980. Thus, bilingualism is an extensive cultural, linguistic, and cognitive phenomenon that is extensively carried out in modern society. Bilingualism bridges the understanding of the world around us, communicating with others, promoting the sharing of cultural phenomena. Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In many studies, bilingual learners brain can have better attentiveness and the ability to switch tasks than a mono lingual learner s brain because of their cognitive ability to control to suppress one language while using another language or switch from one language to another language simultaneously. Bilingualism also positively affects learners academic progress (Saer, D. J. 1923). Moreover, studies on bilingual language processing have shown that when bilingual speakers, listen to, read, or produce sentences, linguistic competency in both languages is activated, even when the speaker uses one language (Kroll, J. F., Bobb, S. C., Hoshino, N. (2014). This cross language activation can be detected in both beginners and highly skilled bilinguals and can be found at various levels of language processing system, such as lexicon, phonology, and grammar. In particular, cognitive research on bilingualism suggests that a bilingual speaker s second language, which is not used in word recognition and language production, is being suppressed and the language that tends to be self controlled is the native language of the speaker, not the second foreign language, implying that the native language is indeed compromised to accommodate the second language. The control system used to cognitively prohibit and switch languages is a control system commonly used for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mitochondrial Pathway Of Mitochondrial And Mitochondrial... 1.2.2. Mitochondrial pathway The mitochondrial pathway, also called intrinsic pathway, because it is initiated from inside the cell. Various stimuli such as growth factors withdrawal, DNA damage, hypoxia, and oxidative stress can induce apoptosis through this cascade. These insults cause increasing permeability of the outer mitochondrial membrane and opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) pore which is controlled by members of the Bcl 2 family proteins. This large family of proteins is defined by the presence of conserved Bcl 2 homology domains (BH1 to BH4). Up to 30 Bcl 2 family genes have been identified in mammals, which have either pro apoptotic or anti apoptotic functions. Some of the anti apoptotic members include Bcl 2 itself, Bcl XL, Bcl w, BAG and Mcl 1 which possess all domains of BH1 to BH4. The pro apoptotic family proteins can be divided into two subgroups: consists of Bak, Bax, and Bok with possess BH1 to BH3 domains, and Bad, Bid, Bik, BNIP3, Bim, Bmf, Blk, Hrk, Noxa, Puma, and Spike) that only possesses BH3 domain [Cory, 2002; Mund, 2003]. It is believe that BH3 only proteins interfere with the fine tuned balance of homo or hetero oligomerization between pro apoptotic multidomains (eg., Bax/Bak) and anti apoptotic members (eg., Bcl 2/Bcl XL) (Figure 3). In general, oligomers of Bak, Bax, and Bok induce PMT, either by forming channels by themselves or by interacting with components of the PMT [Antonsson, 2000]. Bad can also heterodimerize ... • 4. Radar In World War Two One of the most important technological achievements of World War Two was the invention of radar. For the first time in history, commanders could see hundreds of miles past their own vision and develop strategies to counter enemy movements. Radar had enormous effects on the outcome of World War Two and was a determining factor in how naval and aerial strategy developed into what it is today. Applicable in both offensive and defensive strategies, radar can be used as an early warning device or as a helping mechanism for aerial bombers and naval ships to find their targets more effectively. Defensively, radar played a large role against aerial and naval attacks throughout the war. World War Two was the first time that airplanes were used as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Suddenly, poor weather conditions and the darkness of night were no longer problems for naval leaders and fighters. Radar allowed ship commanders and airman to see without light, and be more precise with their targets. The ability to attack at night was immensely different from previous wars. Previously, the darkness made fighting impossible due to lack of technology for targeting. With radar, this was now possible. To attack from the air or by ship at night was a formidable threat to ships and land bases. Radar was used to locate enemy ships and launch planes accurately from large distances. Attacking without ever seeing the enemy was also now a normal element to naval warfare. From using radar to launch planes at an enemy hundreds of miles away to using it to find the coordinates of enemy ships and using naval gunfire, seeing the actual enemy was no longer necessary. One instance where radar played a formidable role in an attack was at the battle of Midway. Midway was the turning point in the war where Japan lost two of their aircraft carriers due to radar locating their exact locations (Lambert). With this information American forces were able to send dive bombers to the exact coordinates to destroy the vital Japanese carriers. Also using radar for reconnaissance was a determining factor for the offensive campaigns. Being able to detect where the enemy is and where they are going to be made the planning of operations more adjustable to change. The use of radar required a broad communication chain in order to inform leaders of the findings. With the increased communications, radar findings could be announced to the whole fleet and its commanders. Increasing the pre battle intelligence by increasing communication, commanders could use the radar finding and direct ships and aircraft ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Crohn s Disease Research Paper Inflammatory Bowel Disease, also known as IBD, is comprised of two major disorders: Crohn s disease or ulcerative colitis (UC). Both conditions are characterized by inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Although Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis share similarities in symptoms, treatment, and prevention there are also distinct characteristics between the diseases. Ulcerative colitis is classified as a chronic inflammation that involves only the large intestine. In UC, the inflammation starts at the rectum and spreads into the colon continuously, developing ulcers only in the inner most lining of the colon. Compared to UC, Crohn s disease is characterized by skip lesions that resemble a patchy cobblestone appearance, generated anywhere ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main concern of physicians is to help patients regulate their symptoms and immune system better, through diet, medication, and possibly surgery. Although the food a person eats doesn t trigger the diseases, it can help control aggravation of symptoms. It s important to maintain a healthy and soothing diet that helps reduce your symptoms, replace lost nutrients, and promote healing. Many people find that soft, bland foods cause less discomfort than spicy, fatty or high fiber foods. Medication such as, steroids and antibiotics would be prescribed to treat symptoms of diarrhea, abdominal pain, and inflammation. As I stated above the first concern of physicians is get their immune system better. Cigarette smoking is slightly controversial; it will increase the risk for Crohn s disease, but may be protective against ulcerative colitis. Clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of nicotine patches are still being examined to show any relief of symptoms for people with UC, while not promoting other health complications of smoking. Stress, which most of us deal with on a daily basis, may have a role in the exacerbation of symptoms in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Approximately one quarter of patients with ulcerative colitis, medical therapy is not completely successful. Under these circumstances, surgery may be considered as a last resort. • 6. Cement Planter Incident For the past week, I have spent every waking hour trying to figure out an incident that occurred in my front yard: what had happened to a 400 pound cement flower planter, to be exact. On one relaxing Saturday evening in late November 2015, my sister came to visit and had noted our cement planter had been tipped over. With no account of who did this or when it had happened, I delved into the mystery of how this massive planter had tipped over. Before I get into this story, I d like to point out something I never thought about before I attempted to resolve this mystery. That is, the phenomena described as seeing an object every day, and then the object is moved or taken away and the change is not noticed. For instance, how many times do you drive past the same scenery every day? Same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Looking at the aerial view of my house, it can be noted that a car could effectively turn around using my driveway without having to pull up much farther than the planters. Who had pulled up far enough into the driveway to turn around and hit the planter? As one who nurses doubt, this fallen planter has caused uncertainty beyond belief. If it wasn t my sister or two friends, who had needed to pull up into the driveway far enough to hit the planter when they were backing out? As much as I want to be sure on this situation, I simply can t be. When I had first delved into this mystery, a conclusion seemed so feasible. I would just have to talk to the right people, ask the right questions, and the planter tipper would just become one solid answer. Now, over a week later, I feel like shaking everyone by the shoulders, like an irritated policeman. Who tipped this planter, and why didn t they fess up about it? I suppose some mysteries will never be solved, and we will have to pick up our toppled flower planter and carry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Economic And Political Inequalities Of America Economic and Political Inequalities Public subsidies are allowing for multinational companies like Walmart and McDonald s to pay such low wages, which in turn provides social services like food stamps, Medicaid and public housing. Out of all U.S. companies Wal mart employees are the largest recipients of public welfare, receiving about $6.2 billion a year in mostly federal subsidies. Because they are making such nominal hourly wages these services are essential for the well being of the American public. Workers and consumers alike are encapsulated within this system, with the Walton family even controlling a large portion of the region s banking system. Jim Walton, son of Sam Walton, controls 96% of Arvest Bank. His father and mother purchased the Bank of Bentonville in 1961 when it had a holding of approximately $3.5 million. Today, it controls over $15 billion of assets. If you look at their growth, it is clear that Arvest, the Walton banking industry, is following the path of Walmart and headed toward the path of globalization. Public policy is a driving factor behind all of this. Walmart holds supreme legal power due to its vast wealth, meaning stakeholders are able to pay off any organization or individual that stands in the way of their economic development goals. From Hillary s involvement with Walmart to Bill s signing signing into effect NAFTA and WTO, the Clinton administration is a direct example of how political ties can contribute to the development of a ... Granted this is case more often than not, other commodities such as corn and gold have a tremendous impact on daily stock prices. Global commodities are typically broken down into 4 basic headers; energy, metals, agriculture, meat livestock, and consumer. Energy, as we know, watch the most heavily scrutinized assets including oil and natural gases. Metals, on the other hand, track our most precious assets, gold and silver. While agriculture, meat livestock and consumer observe corn, coffee and live cattle to name a few. Obviously when oil prices are volatile, earnings from company s like Exxon Mobil will fluctuate. Investors are quick to take notice of this, causing share prices of energy companies to fall. However, what you may not be aware of is that oil is a key input into a variety of goods and products we use daily. Retail manufactures often use oil to make plastics or fertilizers found at your local Walmart. By extension, when the price of oil rises, major retailers pass on rising costs onto consumers in the form of higher prices. If they aren t able to pass along the cost increase, then retailers face an adverse impact on margins, subsequently hurting stock prices. Moreover, oil prices have a directly effect what you end up paying at theh pump. When oils prices are high, consumer spending typically suffers since consumers must dig deeper to on necessities and fuel. Auto manufactures often feel this effect through falling sales of its higher margin SUVs and trucks. Gold Unlike oil, gold prices indirectly follows movements in the market. Throughout history gold has been viewed as a counter cyclical asset, which means the precious metals gains value during market down turns. Since gold is found all over the world and holds high intrinsic value, it is often viewed as a universal currency. Essay on Scarlet Letter Reflective Mono In the 1600 amp;#8217;s, in a small town in a market place, in a time when religion was the only base of all morals among people, and the government worked on behalf of god. A small town is filled with commotion after a woman has been prosecuted and sentenced with punishment for adultery. There I was minding my own nevermind when like a bolt of lightning from the heavens I saw Mistress Hester Prynne with her daughter. Mistress Prynne sticks out like a sore thumb. She is an odd one. She walked with the child holding her hand, slowly, as heads to turned. She stood so clear of everyone else that I saw the brand clearly. It was a work of art. Never have I seen such good stitching. Standing in the light, her hair taken back, looking without expression. A picturesque woman, voluptuous breasts and smooth curves seem to be noticeable even though the scarlet letter seemed to steal much of the attention. Her complexion so fair, and so white in the light. Her dress, though simple, hung on her like a she was wearing a garment made of gold. The letter, as if it were a large broach, so majestic, it was almost ridiculous to think it as a mark of shame. I moved closer to her general direction, hoping that I could get a closer look, as if that would let me into her mind, or into her thoughts. My curiosity grew larger, and I wondered how she felt knowing all eyes were upon her chest, upon the mark. She showed no signs of emotion, not a smile, let alone a frown, as if none around her existed. Could she feel the eyes burning upon her? Well as sure as day, she turned around and looked me in the eye. I froze. I saw a glistening in her eyes, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Princess Bride Analysis In the film, The Princess Bride, the director Rob Reiner introduced many themes into the plot. A significant theme in the film, The Princess Bride, is Intelligence . Had intelligence not have been a contributing factor to the plot, there would be a completely different outcome at the end. Deception, outwitting, outsmarting, all contribute to how the story ends. An excellent example of this is when Westley and Vizzini had a battle of wit to win the princess, as Vizzini had kidnapped her. The shots used were mostly close ups, as the two of them had no real power over the other. Westley was the one leading the challenge. This involved Vizzini choosing which wine goblet had the iodine powder. Of course, Westley had developed an immunity to iodine powder, so he had put iodine powder in both goblets. Vizzini, thinking he was smart, continuously questioned which goblet it could be in, making it look like he was stalling. He eventually picked one, drunk it, and thought he had won. He had not. After Vizzini collapsed to the ground, Westley escorted Buttercup away and shared some of his tales to her. These experiences he had experienced caused this Man in black to be almost terrifying to Buttercup, as she had not known yet that he was in fact, Westley. Buttercup explains to him about her lost love, and Westley simply mocks her. You mock my pain! She tells him, upset by his lack of caring. He just replies, Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says different is selling something. He says this with ease as he knows exactly her pain. Westley s speech pattern was very proper, and he was quite knowledgeable in his many experiences. He knew about the terrors of the fire swamp, and seemed to know lots of useful information to help him and Buttercup get away. He had experienced many other situations that helped contribute to his vast knowledge. Having a high level of intelligence also contributes to your authority over people. When Westley was climbing the mountain to get to Inigo, a low shot was used showing that currently, Inigo had power. Another example, Prince Humperdinck, being royal, had quite a bit of authority ... In some cases, this is true, especially in the late 19th century. Woman during this period were marrying as young as 15 years old and were marrying men well into their 30s. This caused a lack of communication and love between a married couple and usually resulted in the man having control over the woman. The idea of men having control over women in marriage can be seen in Kate Chopin s The Story of an Hour.
