Taboo Topics in Employer Brand: Afterthoughts and ImplicationsKyle Lagunas
When we – as an industry and as practitioners – talk about best practices for employer brand, we tend to dwell on the feel-good side of things: better candidate experience, more brand ambassadors, improved employee engagement. But what if the secret to improving your employer brand actually lies in the practices and processes that we try to avoid, because they feel taboo?
In this exclusive #SmartTalkHR webinar with Kyle Lagunas, Principal Analyst at Lighthouse Research & Advisory, we’ll discuss the implications of making the taboo an afterthought, including:
Organizational Transparency
Relocation Practices
Performance Expectations
Outplacement Resources
He’ll also discuss how you can take proactive steps to improve your employer brand around these processes and events, so make sure to reserve your seat.

SOUTH PARK: THE UNLIKELY INFLUENCE ON POLITICAL TOLERANCE
Abstract: The history of South Park and why it is relevant to political tolerance is explored. The hypothesis given is that individuals who have a high level of exposure to South Park will have a higher level of political tolerance than those who have little to no exposure to South Park. A look at where and how political socialization begins is presented. The evidence found from similar popular culture entities, like Harry Potter, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, on their influence towards political tolerance is shown as comparisons to South Park. A survey given gauges 90 participants’ political tolerance level and exposure to South Park through a series of questions. The results were conclusive in displaying that the participants most exposed to South Park had a high political tolerance which was only slightly higher than those participants with little to no exposure to South Park. Chapter One: Introduction
The show South Park was created in 1997 by two friends Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The brilliant duo met in college and began their journey by making two small skits that eventually morphed into one of the most successful, popular and 3rd longest running cartoon show of all time. South Park is famous for its progressive views and has even been continuously praised by large activist groups. GLAAD nominated the creators for their episode entitled “Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride” in 1998 for the Outstanding TV – Individual Episode award (IMDb, 2015). Having just finished its 18th season with a total of 257 episodes, a movie made in 2001, 11 awards including 5 Emmys and 31 other nominations, South Park has no doubt made an impact on the entertainment industry. But what else could this very progressive and politically satirical show have influenced over the long years?
Trey Parker and Matt Stone portray many social and political conversations as utter farces. And they do this by using the crudest and most shocking tactics possible. They absolutely do not hold back; when it comes to their spotlight of ridicule, no one is safe. Yet the position that the show ultimately takes is that of tolerance. After all the insulting content, harsh language and potty humor the viewer is struck with a positive lesson that the four main boys learned throughout their journey. For instance in the episode entitled “All About the Mormons”, it is clear that the creators are severely poking fun at the Mormon religion. However, in the end there is a speech from one of the young boys that contradicts the ridicule and actually makes the viewer feel stupid for even la.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

2. Introduction
● In this presentation, I aim to talk about:
● Cultural Context behind the idea
● Key Ideas behind idea
● History behind my chosen topic
● Contemporary factors concerning my idea.
● Sources used: 'Blame Canada: South Park and
Contemporary Culture' by Toni Johnson-Woods and
'Contentious Language: South Park and the
Transformation of Meaning' by Marcus Schulzke and
'Totem and Taboo' by Sigmund Freud
3. Context
● Since the shows beginning, the creators have
always tried to keep seeing what they can get
away with – how far they can go.
● 'The meaning of words and their power to
offend is a central theme of South Park'
(Schulzke, 2006:23)
● I aim to look at the reasons why they do this
and how they can keep getting away with it.
4. Key Ideas
● 'Since its first episode, it has pushed the boundaries of free
expression, questioned censorship, criticized government policies,
mocked key social figures, and generally considered a well
conceived... ...position to whatever is in the news.' (Schulzke)
● Gives idea of what I am looking into. Through such extremities, and
how is it they manage to get away with remarks they make.
● 'Anyone who has violated a taboo becomes taboo himself because
he possesses the dangerous quality of tempting others to follow his
example' (Freud: 1913:86)
● There have been many groups outspoken about South Park and its
content who think it should be banned for influencing their children. I
aim to look at why they violate taboo's and Freud's argument on
whether they should or not, due to direct influencing of children's
behavior
5. Key Ideas cont.
● 'It challenges hypocrisy, without blinkers or hesitation. It
takes on the mighty and the small... … the show is known
for its ripped-from-the-headlines content' (Johnson-Woods,
2007:257)
● The show being so relevant is why it does well. It takes on
anyone and anything, without caring so much. It is rarely
censored though – why?
● Shall do a case study into a couple of episodes, the most
censored episodes, and why they were censored.
6. Historical Factors
● I shall be looking into the birth of South Park
leading up to South Park in the modern day,
comparing the two from then to now – how they
keep pushing the boundaries to higher and
higher extremes.
● Will look into other cartoons such as 'The
Simpsons' and 'Family Guy' who maintain a
similar rapport, and what it is about these
shows that draws audience back despite their
coarse language and offensive story lines .
7. Contemporary Factors
● With 'The Simpsons' and 'Family Guy' – as well
as briefly exploring their history, like South
Park, I shall explore how they are in todays
time.
● I will also look into more recent shows such as
'Archer' and 'Drawn Together' who continuously
fit the same 'offensive cartoon' category, why
they were made as controversial shows, and in
'Drawn Together's' case, why it was cancelled.
8. Conclusion
● Looking at controversy and taboo's in South Park and other
mainstream animations.
● How they manage to get away with such explicit and extreme content.
● The effects of taboo in society, and why it could be considered a bad
thing, in conjunction with why 'South Park' could be doing a good
thing with how controversial it is.
● The relevance the show has in keeping up with real world events
● Case Study on extreme cases of censorship within South Park.
● The history behind other 'controversial' shows such as 'Simpsons'
and 'Family Guy' and how they have evolved in a more contemporary
world.
● Contemporary shows like 'Archer' and 'Drawn Together' and why
shows like this keep getting made and doing so well.
