TABOO LANGUAGE
B Y J A M O S
HYPOTHESIS
• Women use fewer vulgar expletives/taboo expressions than men.
• We chose this hypothesis because we feel like women genuinely either say less taboo
language in general or they aren’t as harsh with the language they chose to use.
• This is gender stereotyped because women are seen to be weak and vulnerable
compared to men, so the language women chose to use, would portray their
personality.
METHODS
• We decided to create a questionnaire as it is one of the most easiest ways to find out
information from people quickly and efficiently.
• We asked if they were male or female and what age group they were in to see if the
taboo language was different between the men and the women. We mostly got people
from the age group of 16-20 as we asked within the college however, we gathered a
questionnaire from a 53 year old Male.
• We asked where do they use taboo language the most and what is their most favourite
taboo word/phrase to say. There were quite a range of words of the results that are
very vulgar and most people wouldn’t use them but the most used word was ‘fuck’.
• The last question we asked was ‘What are your views on taboo language?’, this was
needed because we wanted to see what their personal views on it are and to see what
the different ages had in common or not.
• We decided to put qualitative question at the end because we wanted to get peoples
honest opinions without having the restriction of the options we gave them to chose
from. The other questions were quantitative because we needed the people we asked
to answer quite specific so we could get the data easily out of them.

DATA
• We discovered that males use more taboo language in general than women do and
they also have a wider vocabulary in taboo language.
• We expected this to happen as society has influenced the way men talk and the words
they chose to use. Society expects men to be tough and strong when they are talking
so they decide to use a lot of explicit language.
• Even though the females we asked didn’t have as vulgar language, they still surprised
us in the words they say. One female we asked is normally very sweet and innocent
however, when we gave her the questionnaire to answer, she had words such as
‘fucking hell’, ‘what the fuck’, ‘fuck sake’ and ‘shit’ and we didn’t expect this from this
person. This explains that people act different in differed locations and it also depends
who they are around.
FINDINGS
• We proved our hypothesis as you can see by the data. We can see that females use
less vulgar language than men and they also use less taboo language in general.
• We would have needed to control one of our variables a bit more as we had an odd
ratio of boys to girls who answered our questionnaires.
• Our results depended on who we asked, one of our friendship group swears a lot and
we knew that before we asked them, whereas another group isn’t as explicit with their
language.
