Disability Resources
Campus Resources
● Tanner Terrell: terrellt@indiana.edu
○ Disability Service Coordinator; PUMP Staff Liaison
○ She was very helpful in providing guidance on disability resources that
might be helpful for collection development and programming around
campus. She could be a good resource in the future for finding out who to
talk to about specific RPS Libraries endeavors related to disabilities.

Collection Development Resources-- Lists of Items
● There are plenty of Goodreads, LibraryThing, IMDB, and Amazon lists out there
put together by random people out in the world. Those are easily google-able,
but there’s no one to vouch for their reliability. I skipped those and tried to focus
on resources from more reliable places that may be harder to find. However,
those other lists are out there and might be consulted for collection development.

● Other Items of Interest
○ “Disabled Characters in Fiction” by Susan Nussbaum
■ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/susan-nussbaum/disabled-
characters-in-fiction_b_4302481.html - Fascinating article by a
disabled woman on how disabled characters, even in books, plays,
and movies that are considered classics, are not properly utilized or
portrayed due to the fact that most disabled characters are written
by authors that are not disabled. This may be something to keep in
mind when doing programming and collection development.

mainstream depiction of an FTM transgender character.
○ By Hook or By Crook (2001) This scruffy, brilliantly made feature

quintessential butch/trannyboy buddy movie — about a pair of

Diversity Resources FA 2014

  • 1. 1 Disability Resources Campus Resources ● Tanner Terrell: terrellt@indiana.edu ○ Disability Service Coordinator; PUMP Staff Liaison ○ She was very helpful in providing guidance on disability resources that might be helpful for collection development and programming around campus. She could be a good resource in the future for finding out who to talk to about specific RPS Libraries endeavors related to disabilities. ● Disability Services for Students (DSS) ○ http://studentaffairs.indiana.edu/disability-services-students/index.shtml ○ Assists students with physical, psychological, learning, neurological, medical, vision, hearing, and temporary disabilities ● Disability Services for Students Peer Undergraduate Mentor Program (PUMP) ○ http://studentaffairs.indiana.edu/disability-services- students/pump/index.shtml ○ Provides guidance and advice to students using the Office of Disability Services for Students at IU. ● The Center for Disability Information & Referral (CeDIR) ○ http://www.iidc.indiana.edu/index.php?pageId=2178 ○ Maintains a library of materials on disabilities. May be able to help with collection development. ● Disability Studies in the Humanities at Indiana University (DSH) ○ https://myinvolvement.indiana.edu/sissastd- prd/p/organization.do?methodToCall=orgSelect&org_id=2954&cid=IUBLA ○ A student club at IU that focuses on the study of disability Collection Development Resources-- Lists of Items ● There are plenty of Goodreads, LibraryThing, IMDB, and Amazon lists out there put together by random people out in the world. Those are easily google-able, but there’s no one to vouch for their reliability. I skipped those and tried to focus on resources from more reliable places that may be harder to find. However, those other lists are out there and might be consulted for collection development. ● Movies & TV ○ IRIS Films Portrayals of People with Disabilities ■ http://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/films/ - Has movies sorted by type of disability ○ University of California- Berkeley: Physical and Mental Disabilities in the Movies ■ http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/MRC/disabilitymovies.html - The website looks like a nightmare geocities site from the 90s, but it is in fact from a top university library.
  • 2. 2 ○ Carolina Coastal University: Media Collection: Movies about People with Disabilities ■ http://www.coastal.edu/library/media/disabilities.html - Not a huge list, but it has some unexpected movies ○ Psychology Today: Great Oscar-Nominated Films with People with Disabilities ■ http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/turning-straw- gold/201202/great-oscar-nominated-films-people-disabilities ○ The National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities ■ http://www.nlcdd.org/resources-books-movies-disability.html - Has an extensive list of resources: fiction, non-fiction, childrens, and films ● Books ○ IRIS Books Portrayals of People with Disabilities ■ http://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/books/ - Has childrens and young adult books sorted by type of disability ○ Plymouth District Library Stories About Disabilities or Illness ■ http://plymouthlibrary.org/index.php/teen/teen-booklists/83-teens- with-disabilities-or-illnesses-in-fiction - A list of YA fiction about disabilities and illness. ○ Toronto Public Library ■ http://torontopubliclibrary.typepad.com/accessibility- services/2012/02/adult-fiction-books-featuring-characters-with-a- disability.html - A list of Adult Fiction Books Featuring Characters with Disability ○ The National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities ■ http://www.nlcdd.org/resources-books-movies-disability.html - Has an extensive list of resources: fiction, non-fiction, childrens, and films ● Other Items of Interest ○ “Disabled Characters in Fiction” by Susan Nussbaum ■ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/susan-nussbaum/disabled- characters-in-fiction_b_4302481.html - Fascinating article by a disabled woman on how disabled characters, even in books, plays, and movies that are considered classics, are not properly utilized or portrayed due to the fact that most disabled characters are written by authors that are not disabled. This may be something to keep in mind when doing programming and collection development.
  • 3. 3 Economic Diversity and World Poverty ● Film Resources ○ Why Poverty? ■ http://www.whypoverty.net/films/ - Films can be ordered as DVDs or streamed online for free. ○ Top Documentary Films ■ http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/category/economics/ - Lists films about economic diversity, from poverty to big business. Great resource for searching specific subjects or general categories (like “Society”) ○ Culture Unplugged ■ http://www.cultureunplugged.com/documentaries/watch- online/filmedia/films.php#view=thumb&page=1&tags=hunger,povert y - Great list of films dealing with social issues. Films can be streamed online for free. ○ Flavorwire ■ http://flavorwire.com/310315/10-documentaries-about-the-one- percent -10 films about extreme wealth and the economic gap ○ Carnegie Library ■ http://www.carnegielibrary.org/research/socialservices/homeless/fil ms.html - Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s list of films about homelessness & poverty ● Books ○ Stanford Social Innovation Review ■ http://www.ssireview.org/blog/entry/the_top_10_books_on_the_eco nomics_of_poverty - Top 10 books on the economics of poverty ○ Bread for the World ■ http://blog.bread.org/2010/08/good-books-on-hunger-and- poverty.html - Books on hunger and poverty ○ Questia: Books on Hunger ■ https://www.questia.com/library/science-and-technology/health- and-medicine/food-and-nutrition/hunger - Books about world hunger LGBT Resources ● Indiana University GLBT Library ○ http://glbt.indiana.edu/library/index.php ● Films ● Gay:
  • 4. 4 ○ Beautiful Thing (1996) One of the best-loved gay movies of all time, Beautiful Thing tells the story of two British gay teens in love. Clever, poignant, refreshing, not-to-be-missed. ○ Brother To Brother (2004) Anthony Mackie stars as Perry, a young Black gay artist who discovers the gay glory days of the Harlem Renaissance in this Sundance Film Fest hit. ○ Come Undone (2000) Eighteen-year-olds Mathieu and Cedric fall in love in this sweet summer romance from French director Sebastien Lifschitz. ○ Just A Question of Love (2004) Out and proud Cédric falls for closeted Laurent. Eventually, Cédric gives Laurent an ultimatum — come out or the relationship is over. ○ Prom Queen (2004) A great drama of the true story of gay teen Marc Hall who sued the Catholic Church for not letting him bring his boyfriend to his High School Prom. ○ Ready? OK! (2008) A poignant story about an irresistibly spunky aspiring boy cheerleader in Normal Heights, USA. ○ Shelter (2007) Fresh out of high school, Zach falls for his straight best friend’s gay older brother in this terrific drama set against the surfing backdrop of Southern California. ● Lesbian: ○ All Over Me (1997) Teenage aspiring rock-star Claude (Alison Foland) has a semi-requited crush on her best friend Ellen (Tara Subkoff). All Over Me features a great cast including a young (pre-L Word) Leisha Hailey and the adorable Wilson Cruz. ○ But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) Lesbian heartthrob Clea Duvall steals the show as the moody butch in love with Natasha Lyonne in this fabulous tale of love and longing set in the midst of a campy, highly stylized Homo-Rehab Camp. ○ D.E.B.S. (2005) This tremendously entertaining lesbian spy romp spoofs a whole range of Hollywood movie conventions and offers up a truly satisfying romance full of cute girls and great one-liners.
