This is a presentation I gave to Gum Tree UK staff at the end of July 2009. I was asked to go along and talk about my experiences in start-ups. I wanted to illustrate that the start-up vibe could be achieved regardless of the age or size of a business and that the productivity gains could be very good.
This document summarizes the key differences between working as a product manager at a startup versus a big company. It discusses the pros and cons of each, including greater responsibility but lack of resources at startups, and more stability but also politics and red tape at large companies. The document uses an example activity called the "Marshmallow Challenge" to illustrate how larger teams can perform worse than smaller, more nimble ones, relating this pattern to the different environments of startups and big companies.
On September 13, 2017, Tom Haak of the HR Trend Institute gave a lecture for 2nd year students of the Vrije University Amsterdam. These are the slides he used.
KM SHOWCASE 2019 - Agile Lessons from KindergartenKM Institute
The document summarizes a presentation about applying lessons from kindergarten approaches to building structures out of limited materials to knowledge management initiatives and teams. The key lessons are that kindergarteners typically perform best because they iterate quickly, are not afraid to fail, and collaborate effectively without complex hierarchies. Similarly, agile approaches work well for knowledge management because they involve building solutions incrementally based on feedback, rather than lengthy upfront planning. The presentation provides examples of how agile principles can be applied to challenges like enterprise search, information architecture, and assumptions about tools.
Measuring Team Happiness – A Real-Life Journey of Fostering an Engaging Worki...Agile Montréal
There is no team more productive than a healthy, engaged team. Unfortunately, some organizations still use bottom line metrics to drive performance, which typically hurt more than they help. In this talk we’ll focus on an alternative approach to fostering a great working environment, looking at how we can leverage Spotify’s “Squad Health Check Model” and Patrick Hanlon’s “Primal Branding” to build strong foundations and feedback mechanisms that set the stage for high-performance Agile Teams.

When you're running a small business, you have to wear a lot of hats. So what do you do when one of your "hats" just won't fit?
This webinar is all about identifying which areas of your business deserve your attention and which areas you'd be better off leaving to people with the time and expertise to really take care of them. Why beat your head against the wall trying to complete tasks that are boring, frustrating, or you just plain aren't good at?
We'll cover the questions you should ask yourself before outsourcing locally, the project management and collaboration tools you can use to stay coordinated and avoid duplication of effort, and real-life examples of companies that saved money and time through outsourcing functions such as IT or payroll.
This document discusses how entrepreneurs need to adapt their approach in today's business environment. It provides two key lessons: 1) While it is easier than ever to become an entrepreneur, succeeding is actually harder due to abundance saturating the market. Having a good idea is no longer enough. 2) Innovation constantly disrupts business models and dreams, whether a startup or established company. To thrive, entrepreneurs must do more to differentiate themselves. The document introduces the entrepreneur of the future - designers, empathizers and storytellers. It describes a three step program to help entrepreneurs discover their why, design compelling stories, and develop business strategies to convert stories into value.
Entrepreneurship, startups and company culture 101Ivan Bjelajac

Here are a few issues with this email:
- The subject line does not clearly indicate the purpose of the email
- There is no personalized greeting or reference to a previous connection
- It does not establish relevance or value for the recipient
- There is no clear call to action
In general, it lacks personalization, relevance, and clarity. A good outbound email should grab attention, clearly explain relevance and value, and provide a clear next step for the recipient.

De Belgische delegatie keerde terug met een koffer vol inspiratie en die deelden we graag met het VOV-netwerk. Dit is de sessie ik heb gebracht.
out-think, out-learn, out-create: learnings & take aways from ATD 2015Lesley Arens
De American Society for Training and Development (ATD) organiseert elk jaar het grootste congres worldwide over ‘learning & development’.
In april 2016 I talked about the future of learning in organisations and about the fact dat we need to fundamentally change the way we look at learning in organisations.
Learning has become very personal, and Learning professionals need to take on different and new roles.

Why Psychological Safety Matters for Software Teams - ACE 2024 - Ben Linders.pdfBen Linders
Psychological safety in teams is important; team members must feel safe and able to communicate and collaborate effectively to deliver value. It’s also necessary to build long-lasting teams since things will happen and relationships will be strained.
But, how safe is a team? How can we determine if there are any factors that make the team unsafe or have an impact on the team’s culture?
In this mini-workshop, we’ll play games for psychological safety and team culture utilizing a deck of coaching cards, The Psychological Safety Cards. We will learn how to use gamification to gain a better understanding of what’s going on in teams. Individuals share what they have learned from working in teams, what has impacted the team’s safety and culture, and what has led to positive change.
Different game formats will be played in groups in parallel. Examples are an ice-breaker to get people talking about psychological safety, a constellation where people take positions about aspects of psychological safety in their team or organization, and collaborative card games where people work together to create an environment that fosters psychological safety.

Suzanne Lagerweij - Influence Without Power - Why Empathy is Your Best Friend...Suzanne Lagerweij
This is a workshop about communication and collaboration. We will experience how we can analyze the reasons for resistance to change (exercise 1) and practice how to improve our conversation style and be more in control and effective in the way we communicate (exercise 2).
This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
Come learn more on how to become a real influencer!
