Cyprus is an island country located in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. It has a population of around 1 million people and has been divided since 1974 between the Greek Cypriot south and the Turkish Cypriot north. Cyprus has a long history dating back thousands of years and was influenced by various empires and civilizations. It joined the European Union in 2004 but only the southern Greek Cypriot area is recognized internationally. Tourism is an important part of the economy.
