Director x
1. Director X
This is the director I havechosen for my case study. He
interests me because he has directed songs for Drake, the
artist and video I have chosen as well. What I find
interesting is that he directed “Hotline Bling” which many
people havemocked Drakefor because of his dancing. I
agree with people however I havechosen him so I can
further investigate what other techniques he uses.
X has been noted for his high-budget, visually distinctive
music videos for popular music singles, including videos for The Wanted, R.
Kelly, Usher, KanyeWest, Jay-Z, Korn, David Guetta, Nelly Furtado, Sean Paul,
Justin Bieber, Drake, Nicki Minaj, T.I., Little Mix, Rihanna, Union J, Fifth
Harmony, and Iggy Azalea. All of these artists are popular in the music industry
which must suggesthe is very successfulin what
he does. His trademark is tweaking the letterbox
format; instead of justusing black bars on the top
and bottom of the frame to frame the image,
many videos by X actually feature the bars
opening vertically or horizontally to reveal the
video and closing vertically or horizontally at the
end, like a letter box. You can see this in the image on the left. The video opens
up horizontally at the very startwhich signifies his trademark and what he
could potentially be to interest other artist into hiring him.
Director X has his own official websitewhere he shares his accomplishments
and also how shegets his ideas. One thing what he loves to do is draw and this
is wherehe gets most of his ideas from. Furthermore, he likes to use a lot of
special effects in his videos becausehe thinks it makes it moreinteresting, his
favoritevideo he used special effects in is ‘coming undone’ by Korn.
As a successfulmusic video director, Director X has made debuts in the
commercial industry and film industry. His mostrecent film he has directed is
‘Across theline’ which he won an award for for best Atlantic feature film. I do
consider Director X as a talented director as he wouldn’t get offers from top
artists and be awarded for best feature films. I possibly mightuse his
distinctive letter box technique in my own music video, but it depends if it fits
well with our music genre.
