When planning the music video, I looked at pre-existing texts for inspiration on
how we could construct a professional looking music video whilst making the
narrative of the music video both unique and unpredictable. This was vital as we
had no previous experience producing music videos so this gave us the advantage
of being able to plan a successful narrative that we assumed would entertain the
audience to the maximum extent. We noticed how throughout R&B music videos
in particular there is a mixture between narrative storylines and performance shots
within its construction in order to ensure that the music video maintains an
element of predictablility and still be identifiable as a R&B video.

With this in mind we decided to challenge a number of R&B genre codes and
conventions through using a female character within the narrative as she is seen to
possess strong characteristics and resist the ‘gold-digger’ mind set and walk away
from her situation. We additionally use camera shots such as a number of over the
shoulder shots where we display a series of text messages between the male and
female character to denote a disequilibrium to the audience; along-side close up
shots of Porscha’s face to further her frustration with the ideologies of the male
character.

We introduce a number of establishing shots within the construction of the music
video where we identify the different situations which the characters find
themselves in. Along with these shots that defy stereotypical codes and
conventions of the R&B genre, we decided to implement performance shots
detailing Romaan as the main feature within the video. The use of tracking shots
and reverse tracking shots meant that we were able to connote Romaan’s success
and confidence through his body language and the way he slurs the lyrics looking
directly into the camera lens. In order to gain inspiration for the construction for
the music video we looked at the various editing techniques along with the
appropriate mise-en-scene within videos such as Chris Brown’s ‘don’t judge me’
which gave us the idea of having both performance and narrative aspects within
the music video.
