Textual analysis 1
Generation Why by Conan Gray
The first music video I decided to look at for my textual analysis is
Generation Why by Conan Gray, as it reflects the aesthetic that I
would like to create in my music video, and also has an element of
protest. The song talks about the struggles faced by young people in
the 21st century, and the misconceptions and stereotypes associated
with millennials (or generation Y). Across the next few slides is a
storyboard showing some key shots from the video.
After looking more in depth at this video, I am still a fan of the
aesthetic, especially the use of colour in this video, as there is a
continuous colour scheme throughout, which helps all the different
locations featured in the video come together smoothly. I also like the
short title sequence used at the beginning of the video, this is
something I definitely want to use in my video, at the beginning and
the end – at the beginning I would like to have a similar title
sequence, and at the end I’d like to have some text that directs people
who watch the video to my website. This will help me incorporate
digital convergence, as I could use the same font in both my video and
on the homepage of my website.
