UX and accessibility go hand in hand, without a good UX process creating a usable product, no amount of work on accessibility will make it good for people with disabilities.
You can think of UX as optimising for the majority, and accessibility and scaling out an interface for minorities, but where do those aims conflict? There are interfaces being created for “great UX” that are fundamentally inaccessible. Do they need to be?
At each stage of design there are four questions I ask to ensure an interface is accessible. If you can build those into your process, you won’t get blindsided after launch.

In this talk we’ll uncover our journey in creating a Design System for Skyscanner and share our learnings on how we sold it to the business by proving its worth. We’ll talk through some of the design and tech considerations we’ve made and share the tools and techniques which have helped us along the way.
During the 6-week internship on Advanced SolidWorks, I gained expertise in various topics
including Design Tables and Configurations, Assemblies Advanced Mates, Assemblies Deep-
Dive, and successfully completed a final project focused on designing a Radial Engine.
In the Design Tables and Configurations module, I learned how to create and manage design
tables, enabling efficient parametric design changes and customization options. I became
proficient in configuring parts and assemblies using different design configurations, optimizing
flexibility and adaptability in engineering designs.
The Assemblies Advanced Mates module allowed me to explore advanced mating techniques,
such as symmetric mates, path mates, and mechanical mates. I mastered the skill of creating
complex assemblies, ensuring precise and accurate component alignment and motion simulation.
In the Assemblies Deep-Dive module, I delved deeper into assembly techniques, learning about
sub-assemblies, exploded views, and the use of mate references. I acquired a comprehensive
understanding of organizing complex assemblies and effectively communicating design intent
through exploded views.
For my final project, I undertook the challenging task of designing a Radial Engine. This
involved creating the individual engine components, designing mating features, applying
advanced mates, and ensuring proper functionality and realistic motion. Through this project, I
applied my knowledge and skills acquired throughout the internship to create a functional and
visually appealing radial engine model.
Overall, this internship provided me with a comprehensive understanding of Advanced
SolidWorks techniques, enabling me to efficiently design, configure, and assemble complex
engineering models. I am confident that the skills and knowledge gained during this internship
will greatly contribute to my future endeavors in the field of mechanical engineering and product
design.

A 25 minute workshop on sketchnoting (visual note taking) which I ran at the UK UXPA Creativity event on 21 March 2013, in London. I ran the workshop 3 times back-to-back and by the end of the evening we had around 50 sketchnotes created by the workshop attendees! Mike Rohde and Peachpit very kindly gave me 3 copies of The Sketchnote Handbook to give away and I picked out 3 budding sketchnoters to receive the books. Thanks to the UK UPA for organising the Creativity event and Sapient Nitro for hosting! And a hat tip to Eva-Lotta Lamm who inspired me to start sketchnoting back in 2011.
Thinking and working visually for software testers - Nordic Testing DaysHuib Schoots
Nowadays testers need to be creative in their approach of working. Creating test strategies, test plans, test reports and test cases in the “old school” style is taking too much time out of actual testing and is not particularly collaborative. Systems are getting more and more complex. This tutorial shows testers how to reduce the cost of testing, easily communicate their testing story and involve business analysts, programmers, users and others into their work with visualization. In our daily work as testers we use all kinds of automation tools to support our testing efforts. Among them are many visualization tools. But scientific studies show that sketching with a simple combination of pencil and paper might lead to better results.
Text is boring and not very creative. It lets your brain run at half power, only the left part of the brain is put to work. Visualization also put your right side of the brain to work. People remember images easier. In addition, images often impress us more. We often need many pages of text to describe what a single picture can say. The saying that ”a picture is worth a thousand words” is really true! A single image can transfer a complex idea fast and easy. Visualization allows you to quickly absorb large amounts of information.
By showing hands-on practices participants will learn how mind maps, drawings and graphics can be used directly in their daily work. Mind maps can also be used for a myriad of tasks and processes in testing. They can solve problems, can be used as frameworks, create lightweight test design and deliver dashboard style test results and test status.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
