 Cyberbullying, trolls, flaming
 Nothing is private
◦ Things go viral quickly
◦ Can’t take back what you send out… think before
you hit send
 Your text, picture, video now belong to
everyone
◦ Do you want someone manipulating or taking credit
for it?
 Keep replies/ threads on topic
 Give credit where credit is due
 DO NOT TYPE IN A CAPTIAL LETTERS!
◦ It means you are angry or yelling
 Think before you post or reply
◦ Just because you don’t agree doesn’t mean have to
be rude
◦ Your sarcasm may not be understood
◦ People can get mean fast, even if you don’t mean to
be rude
◦ It is really hard to take it back once you hit
send/post
 Be short and to the point
◦ Nobody wants to read a rambling e-mail
 Check your spelling and grammar
 Text speak is not appropriate for your work
e-mails
 Answer your e-mail in a reasonable amount
of time
◦ Typically within 24 hours
◦ Use your “Out of Office” message
 Sign your e-mail
◦ Sometime your address is not enough
 E-mail or phone call?
 Think before you hit send, that e-mail can’t
be taken back
◦ Did you say what you meant to?
◦ Are you sending it to who you mean to?
 Beware the reply all button
◦ Your boss can probably track that e-mail down later

Digital etiquette for school staff version 1

  • 4.  “Rules” to follow to make internet and technology use nicer for everyone  E-mail, blogs, text messages, chat rooms, social media  Also called “netiquette”  One of the Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship
  • 5.  We are relying more on technology to communicate  Things are getting lost in text  Cyberbullying, trolls, flaming
  • 6.  Nothing is private ◦ Things go viral quickly ◦ Can’t take back what you send out… think before you hit send  Your text, picture, video now belong to everyone ◦ Do you want someone manipulating or taking credit for it?
  • 7.  Keep replies/ threads on topic  Give credit where credit is due  DO NOT TYPE IN A CAPTIAL LETTERS! ◦ It means you are angry or yelling
  • 8.  Think before you post or reply ◦ Just because you don’t agree doesn’t mean have to be rude ◦ Your sarcasm may not be understood ◦ People can get mean fast, even if you don’t mean to be rude ◦ It is really hard to take it back once you hit send/post
  • 9.  Be short and to the point ◦ Nobody wants to read a rambling e-mail  Check your spelling and grammar  Text speak is not appropriate for your work e-mails
  • 10.  Answer your e-mail in a reasonable amount of time ◦ Typically within 24 hours ◦ Use your “Out of Office” message  Sign your e-mail ◦ Sometime your address is not enough  E-mail or phone call?

  • 12.  Your Facebook, Twitter, etc… are not private ◦ Your coworkers, student’s parent, future employer can find you  You do not have to share everything you find interesting, funny

  • 15. You should write your e-mails in all capital letters. It shows enthusiasm!  Yes  No
  • 16. People feel bolder on the internet and say mean things because there is little fear of retaliation.  Yes  No

  • 26.  Think before you post ◦ Is that your picture? Are you giving credit for it? ◦ Is it appropriate? ◦ Is your friend going to be made at you for posting? ◦ Are you being mean just to be mean? ◦ Are you going to regret this post later?
