Introduction to Differentiated 
Instruction (Overview) 
 There are some key differences between a 
traditional classroom and a differentiated 
classroom. One of the main differences is that a 
differentiated classroom treats students as unique 
individuals and uses these studies as a basis for 
planning lessons. Differentiated classrooms use 
and implement new teaching techniques and 
activities to give students choices and freedom in 
their learning.
What is Differentiated 
Instruction? 
 Flexible and individual approach to 
learning 
 A blend of whole-class, group, and 
individual instruction 
 Recognition of diverse learners and 
learning styles 
 Student centered 
 On-going assessments 
 Active and engaging curriculum 
 Teacher-modeled
What Does a Differentiated 
Classroom Look Like? 
In a differentiated classroom, the teacher: 
 Ensures all students grow in key skills 
and knowledge areas 
 Varies student “starting points” 
 Creates lesson plans that reflect 
students’ knowledge levels, interests, 
and effective ways of learning 
 Closely monitors and assesses each 
students skills
At Home Tips For Successful 
Students 
 Understand that your child’s work will be challenging, 
readiness-based, and just above his/her proficiency 
level 
 Understand that assignments are relative to personal 
skills and understanding 
 Understand that the work your child does is meant to be 
challenging but not to cause tension and frustration
Stay Connected! 
 Parent-teacher connections are important to 
your child’s success in our classroom 
 Share your perspective about how we can 
work together to help your child learn 
 Share your reactions and thoughts about our 
classroom and differentiation 
 Most importantly, it is our teacher-student

  • 2. Introduction to Differentiated Instruction (Overview)  There are some key differences between a traditional classroom and a differentiated classroom. One of the main differences is that a differentiated classroom treats students as unique individuals and uses these studies as a basis for planning lessons. Differentiated classrooms use and implement new teaching techniques and activities to give students choices and freedom in their learning.
  • 3. What is Differentiated Instruction?  Flexible and individual approach to learning  A blend of whole-class, group, and individual instruction  Recognition of diverse learners and learning styles  Student centered  On-going assessments  Active and engaging curriculum  Teacher-modeled
  • 4. What Does a Differentiated Classroom Look Like? In a differentiated classroom, the teacher:  Ensures all students grow in key skills and knowledge areas  Varies student “starting points”  Creates lesson plans that reflect students’ knowledge levels, interests, and effective ways of learning  Closely monitors and assesses each students skills
  • 5. At Home Tips For Successful Students  Understand that your child’s work will be challenging, readiness-based, and just above his/her proficiency level  Understand that assignments are relative to personal skills and understanding  Understand that the work your child does is meant to be challenging but not to cause tension and frustration
