which was, I Think Less of the Factory than of my Native Dell Labor, Nature, and the Lowell Mill
Girls from Environmental History, by Chad Montrie. The article, The Lowell Work Force primarily
discussed what type of people, predominately women, worked in the Lowell mill. The information
was neither new nor surprising for me. I had been to the Lowell Mill museum before and most the
information there was in the article. The women were young women, from farming families, not yet
married and mostly native born women, not immigrants. What did surprise me was why they chose to
work. I would have guessed that they worked to earn wages to send home to help support their
families, yet, that was rarely the case. Moving away did lighten the family burden; however, that is not
why these women left. They moved to work in a factory so they could earn wages and use them for
nonessential things, things that they wanted, not needed. For many, the appeal of this might have been
from the fact that growing up on a farm with limited money, clothes were always homespun and they

Last semester I synthesized a powder, that based on IR, I believe to be the HKUST 1 MOF. I removed
much of the DMSO and have identified key peaks. Despite having cleaned the MOF several times
with ethanol and by heating out the DMSO solvent, the spectra showed there are many impurities in it.
In order to try to further validate the MOF synthetic method, I attempted a kinetics experiment that
would have tracked the disappearance of the BTC precursor.

In the last run where I successfully produced a powder, 0.58 g (2.8 mmol) BTC and 1.2 g (5.1 mmol)
Cu(NO3) · 3 H2O were mixed together at room temperature in 4.5 mL of DMSO. The solids are not
easily dissolved so it takes mild heating and about 30 minutes of stirring. I raised the temperature up
to 100°C and allowed to remain as constant as possible while the solvent evaporated. The entire time
it was impossible to see any precipitate because the solution was green. The only way I was able to
tell the MOF precipitated out was when the stir bar slowed down and the solution got darker. The solid
formed was clumpy. I broke it up with a spatula and filtered it with ethanol several times. ... Show
