Channel Mediated Diffusion Essay
Diffusion is categorized as passive transport in which atoms or molecules are moved, often through a
cell membrane, from a higher to a lower concentration. This process involves the spreading of the
solute, which ultimately results in the removal of a concentration gradient (Kate T. et al. 2015).
Typically, there are two types of diffusion across a cell membrane: simple or channel mediated.
Simple diffusion occurs when molecules diffuse easily through the membrane; whereas channel
mediated diffusion occurs when molecules pass through the membrane via protein channels often due
to their size or electrical force. There are several factors which can affect the rate and capability of
diffusion such as molecule and gradient size, temperature and electrical forces. For example, more
extreme temperatures result in a slower rate of diffusion. Thus diffusion at room temperature occurs at
a much more rapid rate than would diffusion at an extremely low temperature. Typically, the higher
the temperature, the more rapid the rate of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dehydration results from a lack of water in the body. This can occur if one is in an environment with a
high amount of solute in the air or water, which leads to osmotic flow of water into that environment
and therefore out of the body s cells. Kidney dialysis is used as an alternative to normal kidney
function when the kidneys stop working properly due to kidney disease (Cloe 2015). The dialysis uses
a semi permeable membrane in which only small molecules can pass through. Dialysis place[s] a semi
permeable membrane between the blood and...dialysis solution (Cloe 2015). Diffusion and osmotic
movement cause the metabolites to flow out of the blood [and into] the dialysis solution (Cloe 2015).
This newly functioning kidney alternative relies on diffusion and osmosis and is very important in
regards to medicine and

Smith And Carlos Death Threats
Based off information from a 1968 Olympics Black Power Salute, we learn that Smith and Carlos
were criticized and their families started receiving death threats. Smith and Carlos ended their
Olympic careers but they both played in the NFL for a short period of time. Smith became a coach and
is now a public speaker. Carlos stopped sports due to a bad knee injury which prevented him from
continuing. He hit hard times when his ex wife committed suicide and he went into a state of
depression. He became a school counselor in 2012. Norman raced a few more times but then called it
quits and when he passed away in 2006, Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at his funeral. (1968
Olympics) Two documentary films were produced about the 1969 protest ... Show more content on

Smith and Carlos showed how sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself for the betterment of society.
This protest also reminds us that if only the groups that want change make a stand, it will take a lot
longer for change to happen. Since Norman gave them the one glove idea and wore a patch supporting
human rights, he was the symbol for all others that need to help minority groups get justice. He was a
white Australian and risked his athletic career to help Smith and Carlos. We can t expect minority
groups to make all the sacrifices to make America to give all Americans equal rights. Protests need to
be a group effort by everyone if we want to make a difference. Even though the were hated at first,
there are sculptures and murals all around the world of this protest. People are starting to see the
impact that Smith and Carlos had on the world. They became an icon for social movements and
protests. Colin Kaepernick is the new Smith and Carlos. He noticed change needed to happen so he
risked his athletic career and image for the sake of is black brothers and sisters who are being treated

Buk Masks Research
Buk (Mask)
The buk, or mask, comes from the Mabuiag island in the Torres Strait. The Torres Strait is located
between Papua New Guinea and Australia, and contains hundreds of islands. The mask is made of
turtle shell, wood, fiber, feathers, and shell, and was created in the mid to late 19th century. Intricate
masks and figures made from plates of turtle shell are unique to the people of the Torres strait. The
majority of pieces that come from this area incorporate the use of the turtle shell in some way. This
mask is divided into three registers; the top containing feathers, the middle containing the face and
body of a bird, and the bottom containing a human face. The mask includes certain decorative aspects
that are stitched onto it, such as the curved pieces on the side of the face or the raffia, or palm tree
leaves, used as hair. This mask is one part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is composed of wood, fibers, and shells. The Marshall Islands consists of 34 coral atolls, and over
1,000 islands and islets. In order to link the islands, the islanders built canoes that could travel from
place to place. They developed charts in order to mark each location and patterns of the waves and
wind. The chart uses horizontal and vertical sticks as support for the curving and diagonal sticks,
which represent the wave swells and wind patterns. Along the sticks, there are little shells to represent
the position of each island. The information on the charts were memorized before going out to sea,
and would not be taken on voyages. These charts were known as mattangs, which were specifically
made for the purpose of training people who were selected to be navigators. Each specific chart would
depict general information about swell movements around one or more small islands. Larger charts,
known as rebbelibs, would cover larger sections or even the entirety of the Marshall

Molecular and Cellular Behavior
Signal transduction pathways link signal reception with cellular response
Signal transduction pathways regulate what occurs in, between, and amid individual cells. They are
incredibly crucial because they initiate large responses beginning with a single signal. These chemical
signals are called ligands that enter the cell either through active or passive transport. If the ligand is
small and nonpolar (such as nitric oxide, oxygen gas, and carbon dioxide), then it will simply diffuse
through the cell membrane and will attach to an intracellular receptor. However, if the ligand does not
fit into this category it will attach to a membrane receptor. These ligands are specific to each receptor.
This ensures that no ligand will bind to an incorrect receptor. Once a receptor is bound, a signal is
transduced in a way that the cell can acknowledge it. Signal transduction pathways will fundamentally
affect gene expression, change enzyme or protein activity, and possibly cell death.
Membrane Receptors
Membrane receptors span the membrane of the cell. Since hydrophilic molecules cannot simply
diffuse through the cells to send a signal to the cell, they must attach to these receptors to be able to
send a signal inside the cell.
Ligand Gated Ion channel receptor
Specific signal molecules open and close ion channel receptors that permit the passing of ions in and
out of the cell. These ions include Na+, K+, Ca2+, or Cl , necessary for sending chemical signals.

How Is Language Used In Her First Ball
Katherine Mansfield s short story Her First Ball introduces us to Leila, a country girl on her way to
her first ball with her cousins, the Sheridan sisters. A range of language features convey Leila s
attitude of naive and excitement as the ball begins, and her transition to a young woman who is more
socially experienced and mature by the end of the story. The story conveys the message that loss of
innocence and youthful fantasy is an inevitable and vital part of the transition from adolescence to
adulthood. At the beginning of the story, Leila s attitude towards the ball is one of exuberance as she
has ever experienced anything like it before. Mansfield uses expressive language features such as
similes, personification and metaphors to emphasize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mansfield uses lighter, brighter colours to portray Leila s adolescent fantasies surrounding the ball and
darker, more muted colours to portray the fat man s realist views. Before her encounter with the fat
man Leila notices more of her surroundings and the bright colours of the hall such as gazing at the
gleaming, golden floor, the azaleas, the lanterns, the stage at one end with its red carpet and gilt chairs
and the band in a corner, she thought breathlessly, How heavenly; how simply heavenly! this shows us
how excited Leila is for the ball through how carefully she observes her surroundings as she enters the
hall. Mansfield also uses white and pink symbols of youth such as Darling little pink and silver
programmes, with pink pencils and fluffy tassels. , smoothing marble white gloves and Laura s pink
velvet cloak which show us how light colours symbolise Leila s youthful innocence while the quotes
long before that you ll be sitting up there on the stage, looking on, in your nice black velvet , and the
chaperones in dark dresses and and you ll beat time with such a different kind of fan a black bony one
which show us how darker colours symbolise the fat man s pessimistic maturity. The use of colour in
the text relates to the real life psychological connections with humans, for example, we relate white
and pink with young girls and black with pessimism similarly to the way Katherine Mansfield uses

Equifax Case
Issue Analysis An issue is described as a matter that is in dispute where unique perspectives are held
in regards to what should be done (Sexty, 2017). One of the main issues that still plagues TD is data
security and privacy. As a financial institution that heavily depends on telecommunication, the impact
of a data breach could potentially be catastrophic. Examples of a negative impact include
unintentional releases of confidential information or financial loss all deteriorate the public trust and
sustainability of the bank (Corporate Responsibility, n.d.). However, it is evident that disaster can
strike at any time. No matter how much security is implemented, a hacker just needs to find one way
through and that is exactly what happened to a credit company called Equifax. Hackers were able to
break an Equifax online tool and access personal data of more than 143 million customers (Wattles
and Larson, 2017).
Due to this huge data breach, TD is recently opening a new office in Israel in order to attract the
country s top cybersecurity talent. The bank plans to invest between $3 million to $5 million in its Tel
Aviv office annually (Ligaya, 2017). This showcases that TD is actively taking advantage of global

The Systems Used by Plants and Animals to Stay Alive
Plants and animals have many systems that they use daily stay alive. The nervous system is a network
of nerve cells and fibers that transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body. The endocrine
system are a bunch of glands that produce endocrine secretions that help control bodily metabolic
activity. This includes pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, islets of Langerhans, ovaries, and
testes. Plants don t have a nervous or endocrine system. However they do have substitutes. Animals do
have proper nervous and endocrine systems. The nervous system can be divided into parts: central and
peripheral. The central nervous system is controls body movements, reactions, thoughts etc. The
peripheral system comprises the nerves ( Nervous and Endocrine Systems ). The endocrine system
controls the chemical distributed throughout the body. The main tool used by the endocrine system is a
compound called a hormone. The body uses these hormones to regulate growth, digestion, body
temperature etc. ( ENDOCRINE SYSTEM ON A MOLECULAR LEVEL ). Digestive and urinary
systems are essential to life. The digestive system are various organs and glands that help remove
waste from the body. This system consists of the small intestine, large intestine, ending with the
rectum and anus. The urinary system are the organs that produce, collect and eliminate urine. This
system consists of the two kidneys, ureters, the bladder, and the urethra. Plants don t have a digestive

Okonkwo Patriarchy
Patriarchy in this society also seems to cause dehumanization. One instance is seen through Ikemefuna
who is given up to Umuofia as a sacrifice for killing one of the women of Umuofia. Ikemefuna was
given to Okonkwo without his agreement. However, he became close to Okonkwo and his family and
soon even became a role model to Nwoye. Okonkwo began considering him his son and Ikemefuna
could hardly imagine that Okonkwo was not his real father (7.59). Nwoye seems to be becoming more
masculine and, Okonkwo was inwardly pleased at his son s development and he knew it was due to
Ikemefuna (7.52). Yet the rules of the tribe are that you must listen to the elders and the spirit. This
rule was probably made by the first great tribes and now it

President Andrew Jackson
In regards to the overall effect a single president has had in the course of US history, President
Andrew Jackson should be taken into consideration. Though his morals and personality have long
been critiqued and scrutinized, Jackson s presidency had an indisputable effect upon the power of the
president as an individual. Jackson s profound influence upon the office of presidency was
exemplified within his fiscal, social, and political interventions in American politics during the mid
nineteenth century.
President Andrew Jackson changed the office of presidency through his continuous actions, which
served to diminish the power of the federal government thus increasing both his political and
economic agendas. The economic policies Jackson enacted demonstrated his distrust of both large
government and Northeastern power brokers. Due to his hatred for big government, Jackson detested
the Bank of the United States. Jackson ensured that the Second Bank of the United States (BUS) failed
by vetoing Congress s attempt to recharter it in ..... In addition Jackson also secured its decrepit state
by withdrawing federal funds from the bank, which he later would deposit in his pet banks. Although
his hatred for the bank invoked controversy there were many that shared his economic beliefs. In Doc
4 this is exemplified as Jackson is portrayed is the hero slaying the hydra headed monster. The
portrayal of the Bank of the United States as a mythological monster reinforces the notion that

Becoming A Driverless Car
Intro
Three years ago, Nissan came out as the first car manufacturer to announce that their driverless
vehicles would be ready for consumer adoption in 2020. This was good for the future of the car
industry because it promoted awareness for this new emerging technology.
In September of 2015, Chinese bus manufacturer Yutong announced its self driving car which had
successfully handled 26 traffic signals, several lane changes, and at least one passing maneuver during
a 20 mile drive from Zhengzhou and Kaifeng. The company hasn t revealed much, but they say the
bus used laser, radar, and camera systems on both sides of the vehicle. The autopilot system has a

driverless car] where you re on your phone or reading your book or talking to a loved one instead [of
being anxious]. So the priority moves to your interaction in life from how you re lane changing on the
freeway. I guess if you can make that time in the vehicle more meaningful and useful, maybe you don

With driverless cars, time spent in a car will be more meaningful and people will be less likely to drive
in an aggressive manner and lash out at other drivers. Self driving cars might even have a therapeutic

A Brief Note On The Canadian Banking System
2. ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
Introduction
Canadian banking system has shown itself as been one of the most robust systems in the world
(Ratnovski Huang, 2009). Banking in Canada is widely considered the most efficient and safest
banking system in the world, ranking as the world s soundest banking system during the global
economic crisis that started in 2007, according to the survey conducted by the World Economic
Forum.
Banks play a key role in Canada s financial system and economic development. The banking industry
includes 28 domestic banks, 24 foreign bank subsidiaries, 24 full service foreign bank branches and
four foreign bank lending branches operating in Canada. (Source: Office of the Superintendent of
Financial Institutions as of January, 2014).
As major players in Canada s financial industry, the banks serve millions of customers. They include
individuals, small and medium sized businesses, large corporations, governments, institutional
investors and non profit organizations.
Banks are among Canada s leading employers. In 2000 the industry employed over 235,000
Canadians and had a Canadian payroll of approximately $16.1 billion. In addition, in 2001 the six
major domestic banks paid $4.8 billion in taxes to all levels of government.
The major domestic banks offer a full range of banking, investment and financial services and
products. They have extensive, nation wide distribution networks and also are active in the United
States, Latin America, the Caribbean,

The Theory Of Macroeconomic Analysis Deals With Economic...
The theory of macroeconomic analysis deals with economic aggregates. This theory is very critical
and important in decision making by planning agents in the economy (Mankiw, 2010).
Macroeconomics analysis is of great and paramount importance to the three entities that comprise of
any economy who are the households, firms and the government institution. The households in the
economy are majorly interested in the macroeconomic analysis to determine and know how a slight
change in general price level is likely to affect their welfare through what they can be able to purchase
with the same level of nominal income. It is also very crucial to the households in explaining how
changes in the nominal interest rates is likely to influence the cost of borrowing money by the
households for investment purpose. Macroeconomics analysis looks at the aggregate effect of those
changes putting into consideration all the households in the economy in order to come up with just one
decision measure that is characteristic of the overall economy (Samuelson, 2008). The firms in the
economy consult macroeconomic analysis when they want to establish the effect of increased
production in the market. They would like to be certain about whether such a move would be welcome
by the consumers in the market and whether the consumers would have enough money to purchase the
products or whether the aggregate national demand for the product is commensurate to the aggregate
level of production for the

What Role Did Beer Play In Ancient Civilization
Believed discovered purely by accident, beer has played a huge role in the history of human
civilization. In early civilizations, beer was used as a safe source of water and other nutrients and in
later years consumed for reasons that are more social. Although the reasons for homebrewing beer
have changed, the process has remained primarily the same.
The oldest documentary evidence of beer brewing comes from Uruk in Mesopotamia and dates to
about 3500 B.C.E.; found on clay tablets that tell the story of Gilgamesh in Sumerian, written in
cuneiform (see fig. 1). The tablets describe how beer was prepared, the different varieties of beer, and
how it was consumed. At this time in Mesopotamia, barley was the most important cereal for both ...

Brewing was the woman s task, as it was in Mesopotamia. According to Egyptian religious tradition,
Osiris, the god of agriculture, taught the people to prepare beer. The connection between the Egyptian
people, their beer, and their gods The intimate relation between baking and brewing in Egypt and in
Mesopotamia is supported both by the use of the Sumero Akkadian word lahamu, originally meaning
loaves to indicate brewing and by the constant association of baking and brewing in Egyptian art.
Bread and beer was the symbol of food and a greeting formula. Artifacts dating from about five
thousand years ago found in the ancient tombs of Beni Hassan in Egypt show an established practice
of brewing. (See fig. 2) In general, the preparation of beer, as described in late Egyptian documents
and in tomb art of all periods, did not materially differ from the methods of preparing present day beer.

Electronic Medical Records In Healthcare
Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) are used throughout the hospital where I work. An EMR has led
to many improvements in having access to medical records, in a timely manner. When a patient
registers in the Emergency Department, I can see how many visits they have had. I can see all records,
including past medical problems, allergies, test results, and a list of current medications they have

The Lymphatic And Immune System
The organs that make up the lymphatic and immune system are the tonsils, spleen, thymus gland,
lymph nodes, and lymphatic vessels. White blood cells (leukocytes), red blood cells (erythrocytes),
plasma, and platelets (thrombocytes) make up the blood. Lymphocytes are leukocytes (white blood
cells) that help the body fight off diseases. Two types of lymphocytes are B cells and T cells.
Lymphocytes recognize antigens, or foreign substances/matter, in the body. Lymphocytes are a
classification of agranulocytes, or cells ( cytes) without (a ) granules (granul/o) in the cytoplasm. B
cells are created from stem cells, which are located in the bone marrow. B cells respond to antigens by
becoming plasma cells. These plasma cells then create antibodies. Memory B cells produce a stronger
response with the next exposure to the antigen. B cells fight off infection and bacteria while T cells
defend against viruses and cancer cells. A hormone created by the thymus gland called thymosin
changes lymphocytes into T cells. The thymus gland is active when you are a child and slowly shrinks,
as you get older. T cells bind to the antigens on the cells and directly attack them. T cells secrete
lymphokines that increase T cell production and directly kill cells with antigens. There are three types
of T cells: cytotoxic T cells, helper T cells, and memory T cells.

How Does Shakespeare Use Deception In The Merchant Of Venice
Self expression is the human capability of revealing the attributes and features of one s self. However,
humans have the ability to methodically select how cohabiting individuals will perceive his or her

another. William Shakespeare s The Merchant Of Venice contains situations in which characters lie to
conceal their secrets and self. First, Jessica, the Jewish moneylender s daughter, uses lies to escape her
father s house and elope with her love. Secondly, Shylock, the Jewish moneylender in Venice,
suppresses his motives and thoughts in the presences of his Venetian neighbours. Lastly, lies are used
by Bassanio, an Italian lord of Venice, as he appears to be a wealthy man but is truly in debt. Clearly,
Shakespeare uses the theme appearance versus reality to disguise true intentions and deceive
characters.

Despite the Jew s hatred for Antonio, he is willing to loan him money. Antonio says, Content, in faith!

Antonio s trust in Shylock s fake kindness and friendly behaviour. Shylock s obsession with the idea

the bond out of hatred and villainy but masks his evil hopes in the presences of Antonio. Antonio is
unaware of the seriousness and terms of the bond having believed the forfeit of a pound of flesh was a

Public Transport Systems Of The Uk
Currently there are already a few alternatives to cars available to a large amount of people, the most
prevalent of these being public transport systems which count towards about 16% of commuters as
their usual method of transport in the UK[6]. In the future we will probably see more alternatives such
as driver less cars, notably one being developed by google, and some even speculate as to more
science fiction like modes of transportation e.g. According to Shaw, in the future everyone will use
telekinetically controlled hover boards [1]. The question is somewhat speculative at best as there are
too many factors currently involved as to the requirement of cars both now and in the future.
One of the most compelling arguments against needing to know how to drive is the driver less car
which have had reasonable success under the development of Google, which by 2012 completed more
than 300,000 miles of testing. [...] and there hasn t been a single accident under computer control. [2].
This was achieved about 2 years after the project was first publicly announced and aimed to
fundamentally change the use of cars [3]. The concept itself has a lot of merit as it would give those
previously unable to drive, such as those who are blind or otherwise disabled, means to more
independently get around. A good example of how a driver less car would be was seen in the film
adaptation of Isaac Asimov s I, Robot, in which all cars where computer driven but also gave the
driver an option

Cuban Missle Crisis Essay
Cuban Missle Crisis
Many agree that the Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war; but
exactly how close did it come? The Crisis was ultimately a showdown between the United States and
the Soviet Union from October 16 to October 28, 1962. During those thirteen stressful days, the world
s two biggest superpowers stood on the brink of a nuclear catastrophe. The Crisis started as a result of
both the Soviet Union s fear of losing the arms race, and Cuba s fear of US invasion. The Soviet
Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, thought that both problems could easily be solved by placing Soviet
medium range missiles in Cuba. This deployment would double the Soviet arsenal and protect Cuba
from US invasion. Khrushchev ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
did, in fact, have more missiles than the Soviet Union. What worried Khrushchev the most, though,
was that the Soviet missiles were only powerful enough to be launched against Europe, but the US
missiles were capable of striking the entire Soviet Union. He worried that if the Soviet Union lost the
arms race that badly, it would invite a nuclear attack from the US. Khrushchev needed a way to
counter the United State s lead. (May 49) In April of 1962, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev came up
with the idea of installing medium range missiles in Cuba. Cuba was close enough to the United States
that the Soviet missiles would be an effective deterrent to a potential US attack against either the
Soviet Union or Cuba. Castro accepted Khrushchev s offer, since it would protect Cuba and, therefore,
solve Castro s previous dilemma. In mid July of 1962, the Soviet Union began its buildup of offensive
weapons in Cuba. The Soviets spent most of the late summer and early fall of 1962 ferrying launch
equipment and personnel necessary for the preparation of missiles to Cuba. Since they could not use
military ships (for fear of being discovered) the Soviets used civilian vessels. However, even with this
caution, their actions were detected. As the US monitored the suddenly increased shipping activity to
Cuba, rumors started in Washington. On August 10, John McCone, director of the CIA, sent the
President a letter stating his belief that the Soviets were placing MRBMs in Cuba.

Summary Of The Poem XIV By John Walcott
From the very beginning of the poem XIV , it is clear the author is describing an experience that has
left a lasting impression on him. Walcott vividly details his childhood visit with the elderly storyteller,
and his journey there. Throughout the poem the author uses poetic devices to convey how this
experience was a defining moment in his transformation from childhood to adulthood, and contributed
to his identity and newfound wisdom. It is apparent from the first line of the poem that author is in a
state of overriding fear travelling through the unknown: likening the road to an old snake shedding its
skin. A snake is a clear representation of childhood fear and youthful paranoia, due to its intimidating
nature. Walcott compares the path to a snake because he fears it just like a snake, to him the path is
daunting and potentially deadly at first. The author not only compares the road to a snake but a snake
shedding its skin. This paints a grotesque image for readers and illustrates how he views his initial
journey with anything but enthusiasm. The author is in the unfamiliar wilderness searching for not
only the storyteller s house but himself. His state of childhood terror is only counterbalanced by his
encounter with the storyteller. Walcott effectively separates the poem into two parts according to the
state of mind he was in: fright and then wonder. He shifts from these two contrasting moods by stating

Hydropower Essay
One of the most broadly used renewable source of energy for generating electricity on enormous scale
is hydropower. Hydropower is a tremendously flexible technology for power generation. Hydro
reservoirs provide built in energy storage, and the firm response period of hydropower enables it to be
used to optimise electricity production across grids, meeting sudden fluctuations in demands. The
power acquired from river or ocean water is called as hydropower. Hydroelectric power, or electricity,
is mostly electrical energy that has been generated using natural forces such as gravity or flowing

Issues Surrounding The Legalization Of Euthanasia
This essay will critically discuss slippery slope arguments with reference to the issues surrounding the
legalization of euthanasia. Firstly, the foundations of a slippery slope argument will be discussed,
along with the usual fallacious nature of this type of argument, also to be discussed, is if slippery slope
arguments ever provide good reasons for accepting their conclusions. Secondly, euthanasia will be
introduced and discussed, this will be done using an example of a slippery slope argument by John
Keown from his book Euthanasia, ethics and public policy: and argument against legalization. From
this example, the morality of euthanasia will be discussed as to whether slippery slope arguments
show that euthanasia is immoral. Lastly, euthanasia will be discussed with reference utilitarianism,
and if euthanasia would potentially be viewed as a good or moral option by utilitarian theory or if it
would be viewed as immoral. Slippery slope arguments are often used to argue that if we allow
something to become legal we will be stepping onto the slippery slope to allowing something viewed
as morally wrong to also become legal. These arguments are used often within society, although most
of the time they are used in a casual manner and the distance between point A and B is so large they
are not taken seriously, (Spielthenner, 2010; Jefferson, 2014). For that reason slippery slope arguments
as a general idea are not considered to be good logical arguments. So, slippery slope

Personal Narrative-Defining Me
When I was young, I was naive, and also pretty arrogant, as was everyone I presume. But, on the other
hand, I also had two sides to define me: the first was this quiet, curious, and almost peculiar being

selfless child who cared about others well being more than his own. For as long as I can remember, I
ve always been this way. Good or bad, that s me. Unlike most children my age, instead of playing
outside with friends in the neighborhood, I d be inside or alone in solitude with my thoughts. I ve

Ethical Issues In Mike Goffman s On The Run
The most alarming ethical issue I came to notice when I read Goffman s On the run is that the
sociologist got too close with the informants that she did what black man would do at that particular
circumstance. As she vividly describes in the book, she engaged in the manhunt looking for the
murderer who killed her 6th street friend Chuck:
We started out around 3:00 a.m., with Mike in the passenger seat, his hand on his Glock as he directed
me around the area. We peered into dark houses and looked at license plates and car models as Mike
spoke on the phone with others who had information about whereabouts.
One night, Mike thought he saw his target:
He tucked his gun in his jeans, got out of the car, and hid in the adjacent alleyway. I waited in the car
with the engine running, ready to speed off as soon as Mike ran back and got inside.(Goffman,

I got into the car because . . . I wanted Chuck s killer to die.(Goffman, 2014, 260)
Even though she justified herself by explaining that looking back, I m glad that I learned what it feels
like to want a man to die not simply to understand the desire for vengeance in others, but to feel it in
my bones (Goffman, 2014, 260 261), for my understanding, such behaviour that she described
demonstrates that she has crossed the ethical boundaries of fieldwork, and she violated the ethical
norm do no harm.
Indeed, a researcher in the field, especially an ethnographer who is intended to describe social
relationships among a group of people, he or she inevitably has to build some sort of bondings with
the informants. So one would have to argue that the researcher, in order to obtain reflexivity, has to

Censorship As A Multi Million Dollar Market
American singer songwriter and poet, Jim Morrison, once said whoever controls the media, controls
the mind. With the power to dictate what information an individual is allowed and not allowed to
access, comes also the power to mould a society to whatever belief system that is desired. Advertising
which has a rich history that can be traced back to early cave paintings, is a medium for persuasion
and is often used by businesses and organisations to promote their products and ideas. Advertising
being a multi million dollar market for promoting a wide array of ideas, however, does not have
freedom in itself to promote all ideas. It is assumed that the guiding force behind a censorship act has
the entire control to set what a society believes. Censorship which can be defined as the suppression of
information, acts to protect, to promote and to prevent. Censorship can be and is applied to
advertising. This, censorship in advertising, is determined by varied factors. Political agendas can be
noted as one determining factor in censorship. Germany under Adolf Hitler s rule (1933 1945) is a
reflection of such. Hitler wanted his people to believe that the Jewish people within the society were
bad and promoted that Nazism was right. The Nazis orchestrated a massive propaganda campaign to
win the loyalty and cooperation of Germans (Holocaust Encyclopedia). The article further posits that,

Bulimia Nervosa Comparison
Introduction
Eating disorders are a disease that can impact an individual s health adversely by causing their
emotions and capability to function in the significant areas of their life. There are two most common
eating disorders and they are: anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa. These disorders often begin to

Parthenon Vs Pantheon
The Parthenon and the Pantheon are iconic structures from ancient times. Both have suffered through
wars and turmoil over the last few millennia, as well as erosion due to natural causes, but they
continue to be masterful representations of the classical style. We see similarities between the two
with their use of classical Greek elements and intended function as temples, but there are also
differences between them.
The Parthenon, which began construction in 447 B.C., ...was designed by the architects Ictinus and
Calibrates and is considered the most perfect example of the Doric style of Greek architecture
(Moulton, 1998a). Unfortunately, much of the original building has not survived over the years, but
the Doric elements can still be clearly seen in places such as its columns. The Pantheon, which was

Rhetorical Analysis Of Why Bother By Michael Pollan
In the article Why Bother by Michael Pollan, the author addresses the issue of climate change and
what we as individuals can do. Pollan starts by making the primary assertion that it is up to each
individual to change their habits of mind to curtail the current climate crisis. He believes that by the
simple act of gardening it will severely help the situation at hand. During the course of Pollan s article
he gives many examples of what he believes we are doing wrong and how we can change. Through
the use of many different rhetorical strategies he is able to support his case very effectively. Pollan
clearly states the situation and purpose of his article, along with minor and major claims to support his
ideas. The situation laid out by Pollan is a very scary premise. He portrays a world that will no longer
be recognizable to us in the not so distant future. In paraphrasing NASA scientist James Hansen Pollan

others to change things for us instead of being proactive in our approach. Pollan claims that if each of

thereby normalizing the heterosexual desires/identity as the normal and proper sex desire (Seidman,
2003). Heterosexuality has been socially constructed, because what it means to be heterosexual is
different across the time: the contemporary definition of heterosexuality is linked with the identity, but
the nineteenth century definition of heterosexuality indicated a reproductive drive or behavior
(Seidman, 2005; 46). Seidman elaborates that the heterosexuality only became an identity, because

Ridley Scott Alien
Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979) is a science fiction film about the clash between technology and the human
being. It is especially relevant to the theme of birth and reproduction. At the end, there is a struggle
between two species for survivor. The clip presents the first meeting between the high technological
human being and the alien. They are both a treat for each other, but at the same time the both need
each other. The entire clip could be divided on three parts, the first one at the entrance into the alien
spaceship, the second part, the discovery of the dead alien, and the third part, the discovery of the eggs
chamber. The protagonists are three members of the Nostromo´s crew: Dallas (Tom Skerritt) Kane
(John Hurt) and Lambert (Veronica ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This provides some clues about the film and their meaning: the dead alien in the centre of the room
seems to have exploded from the inside. Furthermore, the chair in which it is sitting remembers a
birthing chair anticipating the development of the film. Despite the fact that this place is not really
threatened, the suspense element is introduced by Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) talking about the
transmission received, it was not an SOS but a warning. So, the audience understands that although
the alien is death the crew is in jeopardy. Ash´s (Ian Holm) cold attitude also anticipates his role in the
crew and the film, and Ripley realizes about it. The elements of life increase in the third chamber in
which Kane descends. This is an immense room covered by leathery liquid and a mist blue ray
protecting a kind of eggs. The use of the liquid and especially the ray, contributes to increase the
mystery and the suspense. This is a reproduction place as is confirmed when Kane falls and finds
organic life inside the eggs.
All and all there is a clash between life and technology, the fact that during the 1970s there were a
revolution in the investigation about reproduction techniques and the new technology was especially
frightened in the society. The entire film and this clip show this concern about the influence of
technology in human life. The future is surrounded by machines, but somewhere organic life survives.
At the end of the clip the eggs and at the end of the movie there is a fight between two organic species

Probation Is A Sentence That Is Given To Offenders Instead
Probation is a sentence that is given to offenders instead of jail. Probation comes in different forms
and many different conditions; therefore, if you were unable to meet those conditions you may be sent
to jail. Probation is mostly used for first time offenders, or for those charged with minor crimes. When
given probation you must meet with an assigned probation officer on a regular basis.
Probation dates back to English common law. The first probation officer was recognized by the
Supreme Court in 1841. Before parole and probation punishments were very harsh, and often lead to
death. Over time we have developed these two systems to punish individuals, but at the same time
help them learn how to live in the current society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the divisions working together they ve made a huge difference in fixing what was once a broken
system.
John Augustus was the father of probation. His idea was to change the behavior of offenders. He
believed that if offenders get a second chance, they should have to learn new behaviors; however, that
would require help trough probation officers. Parole given to an individual when are eligible to parole.
This happens after the prisoner receives a minimum or maximum sentence; however, they become
eligible with the decision of the parole board. The board decides whether or not to put them on parole
after a consideration hearing. Just like probation, this is a program that focuses on the rehabilitation of
offenders. Parole was first introduced in the United States by Brockway Zebulon in 1876 as a way to
reduce overcrowding in jails. He also saw this as way to rehabilitate offenders. He believed this was
the best way to have offenders change their behavior for the better. This would give an opportunity for
offenders to get out of jail, and be rehabilitated. The parole board decides when the parole period will
happen. If the offender violates their parole they will be sent back in jail for the rest of their sentence.
The cost for probation is a lot larger than for parole. For probation the average year cost is about
$29,000 a year. That comes out to be roughly $79 a day. While, for

The Effects Of Caffeine On Anaerobic Performance
The Effects of Caffeine on Anaerobic Performance
Introduction
Caffeine is a natural stimulant which is commonly used in sport for increasing heart rate via the
nervous system. Anaerobic performance is when an exercise or activity is done in limited volumes of
oxygen this can be examples such as jumping, sprinting and the overall effects it has on sports. There
are very little articles in which write about the effects of caffeine on anaerobic performance in which
most articles talk about 3mg/kg, however, there is very little research on the effects of using lower
dosage on anaerobic performance. The main purpose of this text will determine the effect of caffeine
on anaerobic respiration and the effect it has on performance
Discussion
Jump performance is a form of anaerobic performance that is used in sports. Caffeine has shown to
improve anaerobic performance by increasing muscle power and agility on volleyball players Del
Coso et al. (2014). The study suggested that caffeine increased in volleyball skills required such as
jump height by 3mg/kg, however, the study didn t measure lower dosage to see if it will still have the
same effect also Abian et al. (2014) found that caffeine had a significant effect on jump performance
in badminton players. Both trials support the effects of caffeine on anaerobic respiration. Both trials
underwent a double blind trial in which both volunteers and experimenters had no effects on the
results, this allows the results to be more reliable.

Anne Hutchinson In The Massachusetts Bay Colony
The Massachusetts Bay Colony in the seventeenth century was incredibly intolerable towards any
religious ideology that opposed the Puritan authority and when clashed with the ideals of Anne
Hutchinson, the event forever marked the beginning of religious tolerance in the New England
Colonies. The Massachusetts Bay Colony, like many other towns in New England banished
individuals for such offenses as criticizing the church or government (Foner 71). As discussed in small
group lecture, the community of the Massachusetts Bay Colony had become so hardened in their
Puritan values that the sand that made up the community (the people) became glass. The values of the
community Anne Hutchinson, a spiritual advisor with her own interpretations of the Bible, held the
same view as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This idea went strictly against the authority, not because they were actually teaching a covenant of
works, but because Hutchinson was challenging their views whether they were true or not. Any
corruption in the authority seen by the community could disrupt the order of the society and cause
anarchy for the masses. John Winthrop, a puritan lawyer as wells as an authoritative figure in the
Massachusetts Bay Colony thought highly of Hutchinson, claiming she a woman of ready wit and
bold spirit (Foner 74). He felt no ill will towards her specifically, but once she went against the
authority and criticized the ministers, she broke away from the society, becoming a force pushing
against the glass and threatening to break its very foundations. Only three years after her arrival in
1634, Anne Hutchinson was put on trial for antinomianism and sedition. This trial became the contact
zone for Hutchinson s religious ideals and Winthrop s hardened

  • 2. Channel Mediated Diffusion Essay Diffusion is categorized as passive transport in which atoms or molecules are moved, often through a cell membrane, from a higher to a lower concentration. This process involves the spreading of the solute, which ultimately results in the removal of a concentration gradient (Kate T. et al. 2015). Typically, there are two types of diffusion across a cell membrane: simple or channel mediated. Simple diffusion occurs when molecules diffuse easily through the membrane; whereas channel mediated diffusion occurs when molecules pass through the membrane via protein channels often due to their size or electrical force. There are several factors which can affect the rate and capability of diffusion such as molecule and gradient size, temperature and electrical forces. For example, more extreme temperatures result in a slower rate of diffusion. Thus diffusion at room temperature occurs at a much more rapid rate than would diffusion at an extremely low temperature. Smith and Carlos ended their Olympic careers but they both played in the NFL for a short period of time. Smith became a coach and is now a public speaker. Carlos stopped sports due to a bad knee injury which prevented him from continuing. He hit hard times when his ex wife committed suicide and he went into a state of depression. He became a school counselor in 2012. Norman raced a few more times but then called it quits and when he passed away in 2006, Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at his funeral. Smith and Carlos showed how sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself for the betterment of society. He was a white Australian and risked his athletic career to help Smith and Carlos. We can t expect minority groups to make all the sacrifices to make America to give all Americans equal rights. Protests need to be a group effort by everyone if we want to make a difference. Even though the were hated at first, there are sculptures and murals all around the world of this protest. People are starting to see the impact that Smith and Carlos had on the world. They became an icon for social movements and protests. Colin Kaepernick is the new Smith and Carlos. The Torres Strait is located between Papua New Guinea and Australia, and contains hundreds of islands. The mask is made of turtle shell, wood, fiber, feathers, and shell, and was created in the mid to late 19th century. Intricate masks and figures made from plates of turtle shell are unique to the people of the Torres strait. The majority of pieces that come from this area incorporate the use of the turtle shell in some way. This mask is divided into three registers; the top containing feathers, the middle containing the face and body of a bird, and the bottom containing a human face. The chart uses horizontal and vertical sticks as support for the curving and diagonal sticks, which represent the wave swells and wind patterns. Along the sticks, there are little shells to represent the position of each island. The information on the charts were memorized before going out to sea, and would not be taken on voyages. • 5. Molecular and Cellular Behavior Signal transduction pathways link signal reception with cellular response Signal transduction pathways regulate what occurs in, between, and amid individual cells. They are incredibly crucial because they initiate large responses beginning with a single signal. These chemical signals are called ligands that enter the cell either through active or passive transport. If the ligand is small and nonpolar (such as nitric oxide, oxygen gas, and carbon dioxide), then it will simply diffuse through the cell membrane and will attach to an intracellular receptor. However, if the ligand does not fit into this category it will attach to a membrane receptor. These ligands are specific to each receptor. This ensures that no ligand will bind to an incorrect receptor. Once a receptor is bound, a signal is transduced in a way that the cell can acknowledge it. Signal transduction pathways will fundamentally affect gene expression, change enzyme or protein activity, and possibly cell death. Membrane Receptors Membrane receptors span the membrane of the cell. Since hydrophilic molecules cannot simply diffuse through the cells to send a signal to the cell, they must attach to these receptors to be able to send a signal inside the cell. Ligand Gated Ion channel receptor Specific signal molecules open and close ion channel receptors that permit the passing of ions in and out of the cell. These ions include Na+, K+, Ca2+, or Cl , necessary for sending chemical signals. G protein coupled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A range of language features convey Leila s attitude of naive and excitement as the ball begins, and her transition to a young woman who is more socially experienced and mature by the end of the story. The story conveys the message that loss of innocence and youthful fantasy is an inevitable and vital part of the transition from adolescence to adulthood. One of the main issues that still plagues TD is data security and privacy. As a financial institution that heavily depends on telecommunication, the impact of a data breach could potentially be catastrophic. Examples of a negative impact include unintentional releases of confidential information or financial loss all deteriorate the public trust and sustainability of the bank (Corporate Responsibility, n.d.). However, it is evident that disaster can strike at any time. Though his morals and personality have long been critiqued and scrutinized, Jackson s presidency had an indisputable effect upon the power of the president as an individual. Jackson s profound influence upon the office of presidency was exemplified within his fiscal, social, and political interventions in American politics during the mid nineteenth century. President Andrew Jackson changed the office of presidency through his continuous actions, which served to diminish the power of the federal government thus increasing both his political and economic agendas. The economic policies Jackson enacted demonstrated his distrust of both large government and Northeastern power brokers. Due to his hatred for big government, Jackson detested the Bank of the United States. • 13. The Theory Of Macroeconomic Analysis Deals With Economic... The theory of macroeconomic analysis deals with economic aggregates. This theory is very critical and important in decision making by planning agents in the economy (Mankiw, 2010). Macroeconomics analysis is of great and paramount importance to the three entities that comprise of any economy who are the households, firms and the government institution. The households in the economy are majorly interested in the macroeconomic analysis to determine and know how a slight change in general price level is likely to affect their welfare through what they can be able to purchase with the same level of nominal income. It is also very crucial to the households in explaining how changes in the nominal interest rates is likely to influence the cost of borrowing money by the households for investment purpose. Macroeconomics analysis looks at the aggregate effect of those changes putting into consideration all the households in the economy in order to come up with just one decision measure that is characteristic of the overall economy (Samuelson, 2008). The firms in the economy consult macroeconomic analysis when they want to establish the effect of increased production in the market. They would like to be certain about whether such a move would be welcome by the consumers in the market and whether the consumers would have enough money to purchase the products or whether the aggregate national demand for the product is commensurate to the aggregate level of production for the ... White blood cells (leukocytes), red blood cells (erythrocytes), plasma, and platelets (thrombocytes) make up the blood. Lymphocytes are leukocytes (white blood cells) that help the body fight off diseases. Two types of lymphocytes are B cells and T cells. Lymphocytes recognize antigens, or foreign substances/matter, in the body. Lymphocytes are a classification of agranulocytes, or cells ( cytes) without (a ) granules (granul/o) in the cytoplasm. B cells are created from stem cells, which are located in the bone marrow. B cells respond to antigens by becoming plasma cells. These plasma cells then create antibodies. Memory B cells produce a stronger response with the next exposure to the antigen. B cells fight off infection and bacteria while T cells defend against viruses and cancer cells. A hormone created by the thymus gland called thymosin changes lymphocytes into T cells. The thymus gland is active when you are a child and slowly shrinks, as you get older. T cells bind to the antigens on the cells and directly attack them. T cells secrete lymphokines that increase T cell production and directly kill cells with antigens. Secondly, Shylock, the Jewish moneylender in Venice, suppresses his motives and thoughts in the presences of his Venetian neighbours. Public Transport Systems Of The Uk Currently there are already a few alternatives to cars available to a large amount of people, the most prevalent of these being public transport systems which count towards about 16% of commuters as their usual method of transport in the UK[6]. In the future we will probably see more alternatives such as driver less cars, notably one being developed by google, and some even speculate as to more science fiction like modes of transportation e.g. According to Shaw, in the future everyone will use telekinetically controlled hover boards [1]. The question is somewhat speculative at best as there are too many factors currently involved as to the requirement of cars both now and in the future. The Crisis was ultimately a showdown between the United States and the Soviet Union from October 16 to October 28, 1962. During those thirteen stressful days, the world s two biggest superpowers stood on the brink of a nuclear catastrophe. The Crisis started as a result of both the Soviet Union s fear of losing the arms race, and Cuba s fear of US invasion. (May 49) In April of 1962, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev came up with the idea of installing medium range missiles in Cuba. Cuba was close enough to the United States that the Soviet missiles would be an effective deterrent to a potential US attack against either the Soviet Union or Cuba. Castro accepted Khrushchev s offer, since it would protect Cuba and, therefore, solve Castro s previous dilemma. In mid July of 1962, the Soviet Union began its buildup of offensive weapons in Cuba. The Soviets spent most of the late summer and early fall of 1962 ferrying launch equipment and personnel necessary for the preparation of missiles to Cuba. • 29. Summary Of The Poem XIV By John Walcott From the very beginning of the poem XIV , it is clear the author is describing an experience that has left a lasting impression on him. Walcott vividly details his childhood visit with the elderly storyteller, and his journey there. Throughout the poem the author uses poetic devices to convey how this experience was a defining moment in his transformation from childhood to adulthood, and contributed to his identity and newfound wisdom. It is apparent from the first line of the poem that author is in a state of overriding fear travelling through the unknown: likening the road to an old snake shedding its skin. A snake is a clear representation of childhood fear and youthful paranoia, due to its intimidating nature. Walcott compares the path to a snake because he fears it just like a snake, to him the path is daunting and potentially deadly at first. The author not only compares the road to a snake but a snake shedding its skin. This paints a grotesque image for readers and illustrates how he views his initial journey with anything but enthusiasm. The author is in the unfamiliar wilderness searching for not only the storyteller s house but himself. His state of childhood terror is only counterbalanced by his encounter with the storyteller. Walcott effectively separates the poem into two parts according to the state of mind he was in: fright and then wonder. He shifts from these two contrasting moods by stating There s childhood, and there s childhood s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Issues Surrounding The Legalization Of Euthanasia This essay will critically discuss slippery slope arguments with reference to the issues surrounding the legalization of euthanasia. Firstly, the foundations of a slippery slope argument will be discussed, along with the usual fallacious nature of this type of argument, also to be discussed, is if slippery slope arguments ever provide good reasons for accepting their conclusions. Secondly, euthanasia will be introduced and discussed, this will be done using an example of a slippery slope argument by John Keown from his book Euthanasia, ethics and public policy: and argument against legalization. From this example, the morality of euthanasia will be discussed as to whether slippery slope arguments show that euthanasia is immoral. Lastly, euthanasia will be discussed with reference utilitarianism, and if euthanasia would potentially be viewed as a good or moral option by utilitarian theory or if it would be viewed as immoral. Slippery slope arguments are often used to argue that if we allow something to become legal we will be stepping onto the slippery slope to allowing something viewed as morally wrong to also become legal. These arguments are used often within society, although most of the time they are used in a casual manner and the distance between point A and B is so large they are not taken seriously, (Spielthenner, 2010; Jefferson, 2014). For that reason slippery slope arguments as a general idea are not considered to be good logical arguments. So, slippery slope ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ethical Issues In Mike Goffman s On The Run The most alarming ethical issue I came to notice when I read Goffman s On the run is that the sociologist got too close with the informants that she did what black man would do at that particular circumstance. As she vividly describes in the book, she engaged in the manhunt looking for the murderer who killed her 6th street friend Chuck: We started out around 3:00 a.m., with Mike in the passenger seat, his hand on his Glock as he directed me around the area. We peered into dark houses and looked at license plates and car models as Mike spoke on the phone with others who had information about whereabouts. One night, Mike thought he saw his target: He tucked his gun in his jeans, got out of the car, and hid in the adjacent alleyway.
