Formative Assessment - Ownership
• Owned by the students
• Help the teachers in planning further training
• Not to be shared by a third party
Formative Assessment - Purpose
• Provides information about progress of student
• Identifies needs of the student
• Determine the effectiveness of the teachinf
• Identifies needs of further learning
• Is carried out during a course
• It is NOT to pass or FAIL the trainee
Formative Assessment - Timing
• Integral part of the educational process
• Carried out formally as well as informally
• Repeated during the period of training
• Frequency depends on the need determined by the program as well
as the teacher
• Feedback after each assessment
Summative Assessment - Purpose
• Determine the success or failure or a trainee.
• Is done at the completion of the course/ module.
• To certify someone to be able to practice.
• To maintain the certification of practice.
• To determine eligibility for a higher post/ position.
Summative Assessment - Ownership
• Results are in public Domain.
• Clearly needed by Licensing bodies, Memberships and Fellowships
offered by Medical Colleges.
• Can categorize the student into Pass/ Fail.
• Can grades or announce marks.
• No Feedback usually on which part the candidate failed.
Summative Assessment - Timing
• Always at the end of the training period.
• Or at the end of blocks and added into a final score.
