This document discusses the differences between formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment is carried out during a course to provide feedback to students and teachers to identify strengths and weaknesses. It is not used to pass or fail students. Summative assessment occurs at the end of a course or program and is used to determine if a student has passed or failed in order to receive a certification or license. While formative assessment focuses on student learning and improvement, summative assessment makes definitive decisions about students' knowledge and competency.
