Erving Goffman presented the theory of the dramaturgical approach. In general, it
insinuates that people s daily lives can be perceived as performances in action on a
stage. People adjust how they act depending on the situation or audience that is
present. As Goffman (1959) explains, when an individual enters the presence of
others they seek to obtain information on the other people and incorporate
information already known to them. Information about an individual helps to define
the situation and what each personexpects of one another in terms of their behaviour
and the way they present themselves. If the people do not know each other prior to
the situation, they can take clues about one another from their appearance and
mannerisms. Assumptions can also be made about people in certain social settings
with the presumption that only certain people will be found there. Goffman s theory
is applicable to modern day life and I will be using the example of a school

Sadly, I often (too often) see individuals leave the restroom without washing their
hands. You can imagine my concern, not only for the homeless population but for

According to the website, http://www.merriam webster.com, a trophy is an object
(such as a large cup or sculpture) that is given as a prize for winning a competition.
By definition, a trophy should be given to an individual who is triumphant in a
match. However, in today s culture, children are receiving awardsfor simply
participating in a sport or activity. By allowing this to happen, it raises the question
if it is good or bad for children to receive trophies for not succeeding. Through
different articles and analyses on this issue, I will explain how giving trophies for
participation can impact issues of self esteem, self efficacy and foreshadow children s
outcomes.
There are many different aspects of self, such as self concept, self esteem, and self
efficacy that may be hard for an individual to differentiate. According to the
textbook, Life Span Human Development, 7th edition, by Carol Sigelman, on page
348, self concept is your perceptions, positive or negative, of your unique attributes
and traits as a person. Self concept generally focuses on who one is as an
individual. An example of this would be a person believing that they are the most
beautiful person in the world, even though others may not have the same opinion.
Self esteem differs from self concept for the reason that self esteem focus on how
good the person is in a situation, or in an activity. Looking back at the textbook, Life

Cognitive Bias In The Los Angeles Police Department
Back in the late 1990 s the Los Angeles Police Department was hit by a scandal in
which police officers in the Rampart division were accused of various crimes
which ranged from planting evidence, perjury, filing false police reports and
physical abuse of innocent victims and other crimes. The officers involved were
in a special gang task force called CRASH (community resources against street
hoodlums) which was created to combat gang related activity and crime in LAPD
areas. It was a major scandal because police officers are held to a higher moral
standard they are expected to not only uphold the law but abide by it as well.
Cognitive bias is a systematic error in thinking that affects the decisions and
judgments that people make. (Cherry) This scandal shows how cognitive bias has
played out with not only the officers who committed the crimes but also by the
detectives led the investigation and the chief of police himself.
The first incidence occurred in 1997 when undercover LAPD officer Lyga shot
and killed Gaines an off duty officer. Lyga did not know Gaines was a police

Out of all the amazing things I saw in the Pearls on a String, the one that I found
the most interesting was Akbar and Abd al Rahim, from the Akabarmana (Book of
Akabr, 1586 1589). It is amazing to see how many different scenes can all occur in
one piece. Overall, The Book of Akbar had multiple outstanding pieces but the
emotion in this particular page is what caught my attention. Although I did not study
the other pages as intensely as this one, it is clearto see that Abul Fazlt s technique is
spectacular throughout each and every page. This painting is historical, depicting a
young Abdul Rahim Khan I Khanabeing received by Akbar after his family was
killed. A great story is told throughout the entire book, although this particular
image has more of an intensity to it. This page functions as a devotional image in
order to display the emotional trauma Abd al Rahim must have felt having all that
he knew dragged from under him. This occurrence after royal bloodshed
subsequently sets a mood for the piece. Some of the painting is hard to depict, due
to some men appearing respectful and embracing while others appeared with
contempt. This page is taller than wide with a beautiful background paper designs.
The placement of the piece is harmonious in every way possible. In paying attention
to the placement more emphasis is put onto the central area of the painting. The

have good stories about that. It becomes an extension of us. We wish a good morning
in earnest. We need the second stage to be human we are the only animal that is
reflective. That s what history is.
How, then, do we revive this reflectiveness so we move forward? Brush our teeth
with the left hand? Sleep the wrong way in our bed? It s a start. Question everything.
Read a poem about an ordinary object, like a fire extinguisher. Write your own poem.
And thank your parent.
The second lesson is similes and metaphors. Where are they in this poem? How do
they work? Why did the author choose these? Explore.
The third lesson is the moral. Until the last stanza, this is a simple descriptive poem.
But the whole theme is wrapped up in the last stanza. That last line. In this poem,
students should be able to see how a simple thing like those last two stanzas elevates
this to art. Why is one painting of a tree art and their s is not? How is one story

worthy of class time and another not? Theme. Truth. In understanding that last line,
they get the poem.
Now, theme in hand, work backwards and see how those similes and metaphors lead
to that understanding. Then write that note to your old teacher.

When you meet a new person in France, the polite thing to do would be to shake

their first names in an informal manner like many young people do. Adults tend to be
more conservative and formal and tend to be un expressive in front of people they
don t know well. Some inappropriate conversation topics would be anything having to
do with: age, income, occupation, family, asking how much something costs, asking
where something was purchased, talking loudly, chewing gum, and calling attention
to oneself.
2.Gestures Body language such as hand gestures and facial expressions is very
important while talking to the French (especially in the South). Exaggerated
expressions and movements help convey the reality of a story or explanation.
Gestures in France and America are quite similar. Shrugging your shoulders means
that you don t know or you don t care. Putting up both of your hands with your palms
