This document discusses social inequality and ways to address it. It begins by defining social inequality as uneven opportunities and rewards within a society that occur when resources are distributed unequally along socially defined categories. Examples of social inequalities mentioned include gender inequality, income gaps, and racial/ethnic inequalities. The document then discusses different theories about social stratification and inequality. It suggests ways to address inequality nationally, such as through improved education, tax policy, social welfare policy, redistribution, job creation, and workforce development. Overall, the document examines the nature of social inequality and potential solutions.

“Inequality is the status quo. There is huge inequality between people in their access to resources, to decision-making, to securing human rights and safety, and in their freedom from discrimination. Reducing inequality if both morally right and pragmatically necessary for global economic and climate security in the future”

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. Are the body parts the same or different in
terms of functions? How can each part differ
from each other?
4. Relate the parts of the body to the people in
the society.

time. Income inequality specifically
is one of the most visible aspects of
a broader and more complex issue,
one that entails inequality of
opportunity and extends to
ethnicity, gender, age and disability
among others.

for a diverse social positions or
statuses within a group or society.
This occurs when resources in a
given society are distributed

of allocation, that bring about
specific patterns along lines of
socially defined categories of
persons.
10. Systematic inequality between groups of
people
Unequal distribution of wealth, income,
prestige, power, knowledge, and other

Prestige, respect (“status” views)
Education, occupation, income

Power and influence (“power” view)
The debate is over which is most important
or most basic
12. i. Gender Inequality- Gender inequality/sexism
- sex and gender-based prejudice and
discrimination or sexual division of labor. The
emphasis on gender inequality is born out of
the deepening division in the roles assigned to
men and women, particularly in the economic,
political and educational spheres. Ex. Marriage
rules.
ii. Income Gap/ Economic inequality-
described on the basis of the unequal
distribution of income or wealth, in the most
frequently studied type of social inequality
Biological;
sexism
Ascribed
and
achieved status
13. iii. Racial and ethnic inequality- is the
consequence of hierarchical social
distinctions between racial and ethnic
categories within a society and are often
recognized based on characteristics such as
skin, color and other physical characteristics
or an individual’s place of origin or culture.
iv. Health Care- some individuals received
better and more professional care compared
to others.
v. social class- in most societies an
individual’s social status is a combination of
ascribed and achieved status.
Ethnocentrism
14. Davis and Moore: structural functional theory
Occupations are basis for rewards such as
prestige and income
Prestige is primary – other rewards flow from it.
What determines prestige of an occupation?
Basically supply and demand explanation
Importance to society’s survival
Amount of human capital required (training, talent)
Desirability
15. Stratification as combination of education,
occupational prestige, and income
Argues that all three are important
16. Socioeconomic status may be used to define social
classes:
upper upper class – old wealth, long established
social networks, family ties
lower upper – new wealth, “self-made”
upper middle – professional, educated, comfortable
lifestyle
lower middle – technical, white collar, less secure,
lower income
working – manual labor, crafts, services, usually self-
supporting
lower – may not earn living wage or work
continuously, may need assistance to support
families, may include the poor
17. Estate System is
a politically
based system of
stratification
characterized by
limited social
mobility that is
best exemplified
in the social
organization of
feudal Europe
and the pre–Civil
War American
South.
Caste System is a
system of
stratification based
on hereditary notions
of religious and
theological purity
and generally offers
no prospects for
social mobility. The
varna system in India
is the most common
example today of a
caste system.
Class System is
an economically
based system of
stratification
characterized by
somewhat loose
social mobility
and categories
based on roles in
the production
process rather
than individual
characteristics.
18. Countries stratified into 3 levels:
Core (wealthy, highly developed, slow
pop. growth, high standard of living) –
U.S., Europe
Periphery (poor, less developed, rapid
pop. growth, lower standard of living) -
Africa
Semi-periphery (beginning to develop;
may become core) India, China
20. Ways to Address Inequalities (National)
Countries need to embrace/adopt an
integrated program that looks at the
problem across the social, economic and
environmental dimensions, as well as
access to education, health care and
resources to effectively solve inequality.
Vital to these solutions is a host of
interventions that promote equitable
access to resources and services, as well
as inclusive growth with descent jobs and
livelihoods for all people within society.
21. The following are the top solutions to
income inequality:
1. Improved education
2. Tax policy
3. Social welfare policy
4. Redistribution
5. Job creation
6. Work force development
Opportunity
22. EDUCATION
Several Filipinos who voted for the
politicians in the Philippine government are
uneducated, thus they make bad decisions
when voting government officials. Since they
are uneducated they have menial jobs and no
money so most of the time would accept
electoral bribery. Being poor they would
usually turn to crime and drugs.
