The Ebro Delta Natural Park is located in northeastern Spain where the Ebro River meets the Mediterranean Sea, forming one of the largest wetland areas in the western Mediterranean region. Over centuries, some areas of the delta have been drained for agriculture, particularly rice, fruit, and vegetables. In 1983, Spain designated a large part of the delta as a natural park to protect its wetlands, beaches, marshes, salt pans, and estuaries that provide habitat. However, intensive water usage throughout the Ebro Basin stresses the river and delta, accelerating water quality deterioration, anoxia, salinization, and loss of biodiversity.
