Essay about The Words of the Dying Gaunt
The idea of England as a second paradise in a postlapsarian world was a popular thought in
Shakespeare s day. Not only did Englanders compare their land the to Biblical Eden, but also to
Classical legends that would have flourished in the Renaissance era. The fact that Britain is an island
isolated from the rest of the world invited the comparison of England to mythical islands such as the
Islands of the Blest and Homer s Ogygia (Mackenzie 319). Such comparisons surely originated in the
strong patriotism that thrived in the Elizabethan era. Shakespeare capitalized on this feeling through
his history plays, which both instructed his audience on England s past and fed the patriotic ego of her
citizens (Reese 46). Nowhere does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This warning foreshadows Richard s confiscation of Gaunt s estate and the rebellion staged by
Bullingbrook, Gaunt s son and rightful heir.
The next portion of Gaunt s speech reverberates the idea of England as a second paradise. The image
of England throughout Richard II is not only presented through pictures of glorious landscape and
well tended gardens, but through its citizens, both royal and common (Stauffer 92). Gaunt fluidly but
forcefully presents images of England throughout his speech. He gives a list of qualities in a rhythmic
tour de force (Best), which connects all of England s attributes with the word this :
This royal throne of kings, this sceptered isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself (40 44)
These images present England as embodying physical attributes given by God.
Gaunt continues this list of attributes by also praising England s citizens by referring to them as This
happy breed of men (45). The land is therefore credited for producing high quality men, lending to the
theme of England as female, fertile and mother to all her inhabitants. She is further

Comparison Of Benjamin Franklin and Frederick Douglass...
Comparison Of Benjamin Franklin and Frederick Douglass
America, a land with shimmering soil where golden dust flew and a days rain of money could last you
through eternity. Come, You Will make it in America. That was the common theme of those who
would remove to America. It is the common hymn, the classic American rags to riches myth, and
writers such as Benjamin Franklin and Frederick Douglass had successfully embraced it in their
works.Franklin and Douglass are two writers who have quite symmetrical styles and imitative
chronology of events in their life narratives.
They both approached their story with a rags to riches idea. In addition, we must realize that both
Franklin and Douglass are powerful writers. In that sense, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By this I mean that he gained improvements in areas such as literacy when he was belonged to Mr.
Auld, he gained new friends when he resided with the Hughs, and most important,, he gained
consciousness and courage while he was lent to a slave breaker, Mr. Covey. Little by little as Douglass
gained in these assets which eventually became his tool for his departure from slavery.Another
similarity between these two narrations is the assimilation of a created character by the authors
themselves. The chronology and the events that happened in the lives of the authors in their narrations
remained questionable. They picked the events that would only exemplify the characters that they
want to portray. Thus, even though both works are autobiographical, their roles they claimed to be in
their narration are exaggerated. Remember that they want to set themselves up as poor, down beaten
characters at the beginning and slowly rise to power and success. For example, Franklin used
descriptions such as I was dirty from my journey; my pockets were stuff d out with shirts and
stockings... with a roll under each arm, and eating the other, to really give reader a sense of his
conditions when he ran away. Douglass used the same approach to stress his poor conditions. The use
of comparison of his slave status with farm animals and great

Romanticism In The Last Of The Mohicans
Aspect of Romanticism in The Last of The Mohicans Romanticism is an artistic and intellectual
movement mainly in France and England that started in the last 18th century and came to America in
the 19th century. Honor, Nationalism, Superstition/Horror, Pastoralism, and Love are all the aspects of
romanticism that showed up in Michael Mann s movie The Last of The Mohicans. Honor is good
reputation: good quality or character as judged by other people. Two subcategories of honor are
heroes, persons who are admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities, and chivalry, the qualities of
an ideal knight. In The Last of The Mohicans, Hawkeye, Uncas, and Chingachgook all rescued
Duncan, Alice, Cora during the attack on them in the woods. Duncan ... Show more content on

There were many relationships in the movie, the first one was between Duncan and Cora. Duncan
wanted to marry and be with Cora but she didn t feel the same way about him: My feelings don t go
beyond friendship. Later on in the movie, Cora even gets disgusted with him because he was agreeing
with her father about the imprisonment of Hawkeye; the only reason Duncan supported the
punishment was because he was jealous of the relationship brewing between Cora and Hawkeye. The
second relationship in the movie was between Cora and Hawkeye; at first they were just casually
flirting nothing bigger than that. What are you looking at sir? Cora said, I m looking at you miss.
Hawkeye replied. Shortly after that they kissed and shared a romantic moment together in a tent. A
while later, Hawkeye even risked his life to go and save Cora from getting captured by the Huron. The
last and final relationship in The Last of The Mohicans was between Uncas and Alice; it was
unexpected at first but it started when Uncas first noticed Alice s fear of water on their way to
Colonial Munro s fort. While hiding from the Hurons, Uncas was comforting Alice when Hawkeye
told Alice and Cora about their father not making it out of the attack. At the end of the movie, Uncas
died trying to save Alice from Magua because the Hurons took her so Colonel Munro s genes would

Fine Dining Steps Of Service
Fine Dining Steps of Service Fine Dining is an experience that is unique in itself. The server makes
each guest feel like they are special and the quality of service received reflects just that. Each step of
service not only makes the guest feel welcome and appreciated, but also contributes to the entire
experience. Without one element of this process going as expected, it can throw off the entire
experience and turn a good one into a disaster. To have a good dining experience, a server must
provide the following step of service to a guest: the meet and greet, taking the orders, the delivery of
the meal, checking back, clearing of the table, dessert/coffee/tea, and delivery of the check. The first
and most important step of service is the meet and greet. This is the server s first impression and can
set the mood for the remainder of the guest dining experience. The server must always approach the
table with warm welcoming smile, say hello, and introduce him/herself by name. Remember this smile
needs to be genuine. The server should ask how the guests are doing and be sincere about it. If the
introduction includes a first name, the guests can actually make a personal connection to the server.
Servers who smile and use a name become more important to the guests and whom are more likely to
return to the restaurant asking for those servers by name. Guests need for the first impression to be a
good experience to set the mood for the rest of the dining

The Wage Gap Is A Conflict Within The Work Force
The occupational wage gap has always been and still continues to be a conflict within the work force.
The gender wage gap is defined as the average income of a male compared to the average income of a
female. There have been a few laws that were put into effect due to women s efforts to create fairness
in the workplace. The first law, called the Equal Pay Act of 1963 signed into law by President John F.
Kennedy, requires men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work (U.S.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission). The Paycheck Fairness Act is a recent extension of the
Equal Pay Act, it gives workers added protection to take action in the wage discrimination (National
Women s Law Center). When comparing full time and year round workers, 23.5% is the gap between
the annual male earnings compared to women and that has not changed much since 2001 (Burns, 1).
In the profession I have chosen, there is quite a difference in dominant gender between dental
hygienists and dentists. Dental hygiene is a very female dominated field of work, although few male
dental hygienists exist. Due to the gender roles our society has molded, hygiene is usually compared
to nursing because it revolves around care giving service and many believe that is not a task men are
usually willing to do. Contrary to belief, men can be just as, if not more, nurturing than women. On
the other hand, women are perfectly capable of becoming dentists as well. The culture we were raised

Joe Light produced his mixed media painting Colored Hobo in the 1980s using different kinds of paint
on a wooden panel (wooden door that is turned sideways). Just as the title proposes, the painting s
subject is a colored man that is hobo who is walking with a stick and a bag at the end of the stick

His use of warm colors throughout the piece and his use of cool colors mixed in with the warm colors
creates balance. However, the contrast between the warm colors and the cool color create variety. The
little window on the door has a random picture of what looks like a leaf and flowers growing on top of
the leaf also create variety because it is not part of the male hobo who is the main focus. The little
picture in the window is the only other thing in the artwork besides the male hobo which makes the
viewer question its purpose (well it definitely made me question what it had to do with the artwork!).
Light uses dark black lines outline to show the mountains, his overalls, his hat, his stick, his bag tied at
the end of his stick, the river or stream, and the grass. The lines show the shape of everything in the
picture. The value of the picture is between medium and dark, though the orange in the mountains and
the pink in the river or stream is bright. The space of the art piece is negative, open, and shallow. The

Aztec Calendar Stone Essay examples
Obtaining the knowledge that was passed down to them from earlier Mesoamerican cultures, the
Aztecs carved the calendar stone in 1479 (Smith 253). At the time, the Aztecs lived in a very civilized
world filled with amazing architecture, an impressively complex government system, and they also
employed intricate systems of writing and calendric systems (Taube 7). The Calendar Stone was made
by basalt stone. For the Aztecs, everything was pictorial in nature around this era. The calendar stone
depicted different pictograms or Codex Magliabechianoand, which was primarily written on religious
documents (Aztec History). Art was centered around religion in this era. So the pictograms of the gods

(territory in all four directions), and that it was founded upon the sacred principles of time,
directionality, divine warfare, and the sanction of the gods (Smith 270). Keeping the Aztec calendar is
proof of ancient cultures mathematical and scientific achievements without the aid of modern
technology. The study of the sun stone could lead to further advances in mathematics and acts as a
road map to our celestial bodies from that era of our history. The Aztecs believe they felt justified in
believing in this calendar because of numerous events that changed the course of history for them.
Because Aztec Indians were fervent astronomers, they tracked the stars and correlated that between
the days to create this sun calendar. Examples of events happening within the timeline of the calendar
stone being built are these: Between 1452 and 1454, their capital city Tenochtitlan suffered from flood
and famine, the following year on 4/16/1445 (Julian calendar) there was an eclipse of the sun. From
1473 1479, there were 4 more solar eclipses within a five year time frame (Aveni, Calnek). During this

Sidney Lumet s Fail Safe
Events in American history are often distorted and misunderstood, which lead people to wonder about
the justness of the international confrontation. The American public is one of the major driving forces
during war times and without their support, the tide of the war can change drastically. Sidney Lumet
directed the movie Fail Safe, which has multiple instances where a verdict to act, despite the prewar
conditions, was hard to delineate between a just and unjust judgement. Of all the instances in the
movie, the decisions made compelled the viewer to question the ideas the political leaders were
making, just or unjust. Further, leaders caused the viewer to wonder what they were truly fighting for.
The justness of multiple decisions in the movie were brought into question regarding the just cause,
proportionality, and last resort of causing a war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just War Theory divides the morality of war into two parts. A war can be tried twice, first pertaining to
why the nation decides to go to war, and secondly with how the nation actions are during the fighting
(Walzer 21). The first part of war called jus ad bellem, translated to the justice of war, provides strict
guiding principles with whether the war is just or unjust in the intentions of going to war. The second
part of war jus in bello correlates to appropriate conduct while in war (Cook 27). Being just in jus ad
bellum does not necessarily mean that jus in bello is just. Likewise, justness in jus in bello does not
demand jus ad bellum to be just. War can start in a just way but be fought unjustly and the reverse, can
start unjustly but be fought

Political, Economic, And Political Changes In The Middle Ages
In the High Middle ages (after 1000 A.D) and beyond there were major political, economic and
intellectual changes that happed across Europe. The changes helped bring about new eras to the
European landscape. As Europe was brought into these new eras, it thus brought upon the end of the
Dark Ages. Looking first at the political changes that took place across Europe we can break it down
into four key areas, the first of which is England. England had suffered more from Viking invasions
than any other part of Europe and eventually fell under Viking rule with Viking Canute (McKay 254).
Until Canute passed away and William of Normandy claimed the throne, the English kings had little
power outside of calling for war. After William of Normandy took control of the throne, he limited the
power of the nobles and church officials, and built a unified monarchy to help centralize England
(McKay 255). Along with this he created laws, including a centralized tax system, and took control of
the judicial system. This centralizing of England continued with William s successors. In 1215, King
John was forced to sign the Magna Carta which limited the power of the king and later became the
basis for Parliament. The next area is France, which was known as the most powerful kingdom within
Europe, but the kings themselves lacked power. Again this changed once it fell under a new ruler,
Philip II. Philip II began waging war and expanding their territory starting with Normandy. Along with
this,

losses were $1.6 billion in a fund set up to maximize profits through a speculative investment strategy
(high yield, interest sensitive and highly leveraged securities) (Saskal, 2005). During a time of low
interest rates the investment strategy was returning a great investment; however, when interest rates

Generally, municipalities will issue pensions bonds to cover liabilities set for employee pension plans.
While Orange County approved benefit enhancements that lowered retirement age and increased
benefits, thus increasing the pension liabilities in 2003, the advisory committee set up after the
bankruptcy did not immediately approve a corresponding pension bond at the time of the article s
writing. Refinancing Recovery bonds were issued in 1996 for Orange County. Saskal (2004) provides
the rates of the bonds were higher coupon bonds ranging from 5.6% with 2009 maturity to 5.8% with
2016 maturity and a 6.0% with 2026 maturity. According to the article, repayment of the loans was to
become a priority, however, due to legal/tax issues; the method of payment is still to be determined.
Conclusion The bankruptcy of Orange County, the high economic county of California, took a lot of
people by surprise. The ratings of the bonds were low risk investment grade, yet because of a highly
risky investment strategy and increasing interest rates, the bottom fell out and the option Orange
County followed was bankruptcy. For investors that stayed with Orange County through restructuring
and after emerging from bankruptcy, they were rewarded with full principal payments, and past due

In The Wedding Banquet (Dir. Ang Lee, 1993) The Inner...
In The Wedding Banquet (dir. Ang Lee, 1993) the inner conflict of coming out of closet is constantly
at play as the main character Wai Tung (Winston Chao) juggles his partner Simon (Mitchell
Lichtenstein), a fake marriage and his parents. Coming out of the closet for some is seen as a form of
both vulnerability and liberation, while remaining in the closet may be seen as a form of survival. For
Wai Tung coming out of the closet would mean that his father s dreams of continuing the family name
would die out but remaining in the closet for Wai Tung means having to marry Wei Wei (May Chin)
and alter his life with Simon forever. In one of the earlier scenes of the film Wai Tung is seen filling

Simon clicks his tongue out of frustration and almost impatience with Wai Tung still being in the
closet. In response to this Wai Tung rolls his eyes and shifts his weight away from Simon. This can be
read as Wai Tung s frustration with the conversation and that he knows that Simon would never be
able to understand the difference in their families. Simon goes as far as ridiculing Wai Tung and
attacking his masculinity and independence. Simon and Wai Tung in this scene represent the two
extremes of coming out of the closet or remaining in it, respectively. Towards the end of the scene Wai
Tung starts to debate what he is doing by keeping these secrets from his family. He admits that it isn t
the best but also acknowledges that it s something he has been doing for a while and is used to it. This
scene really tugs on Wai Tung s thoughts on coming out, at first he is very comfortable with his space
in the closet because it is just from his parents. He still has his life in New York with his gay partner
and his parents think that he ll eventually find someone through the applications for his perfect
women. For Wai Tung the closet [is] a relatively liberating place to inhabit because he knows he can
push away the familial responsibilities for a bit (Lim, 52).

For the first time in forty years, the Hebrew people are without a leader. But the Lord once again

The Hamilton Grange National Memorial
There are many historical sites in New York City that have contributed and still contribute to America
s political history in some way. The historical site that I have decided to expand my research on is, the
Hamilton Grange National Memorial located in Harlem, New York. This site was the home of
Alexander Hamilton, one of the seven foreign born Founding Fathers of the United States of America.
He had a great influence on the foundation of the United States of America, the United States
constitution and the Federalist Party. He was a Military officer, lawyer and member of the US
constitutional convention, an American political philosopher, and author of the majority of the
Federalist Papers.
Alexander Hamilton was born on January 11, 1755 in Charlestown, Nevis, in British West Indies.
While working at a shipping company in Nevis, he gained recognition from local contributors who
offered him a formal education. This led to Hamilton coming to New York at the age of seventeen
(1772) to earn an education at Kings University, which is now Columbia University. During his
college career, Hamilton caught an interest in American politics, specifically, the American Patriots.
Eventually, he became a huge supporter of the patriots revolutionary movement against pro British
loyalists. Hamilton educated himself on the revolutionary movement enough to write political articles
that legitimized revolutionary actions. These articles caught the attention of many people and political

The Jamaican economy in 1970 was 800 million dollars in debt and by the time of the year 2000 the
debt had reached an alarming 7 billion dollars. In order to service its accumulated debts Jamaica set up
Exporting Processing Zones or EPZ s. The free zones created lots of employment to jump start the
economy. The free zones themselves were separate entities to Jamaica, similar to the US owned

Workers were only paid in Jamaican dollars about 30USD per week while some were paid that for two
weeks. Every two weeks, money was taken out as taxes which angered the Jamaicans

Epic of Beowulf Essay
Alliteration in Beowulf
The diction of the Old English poem Beowulf is distinguished primarily by its heavy use of
allliteration, or the repetition of the initial sounds of words.
In the original manuscript version of the poem, alliteration is employed in almost every line (or two
half lines); in modern translations of the poem this is not so. Beowulf uses alliteration [my italics] and
accent to achieve the poetic effect which Modern English poetry achieves through the use of poetic
feet, each having the same number of syllables and the same pattern of accent (Wilkie 1271). In lines
4 and 5 of the poem we find:

Such stressed alliterative binding together created hundreds of pairs that are used over and over, such
as halig/heofon holy/heaven, dryhten/dugud lord/troop, fyren/feond sin/enemy. The pairs need not be
complementary, but rather can be contrastive, like eadig/earm happy/wretched and wearm/winter
warm/winter. These dictional contrasts provide the listener additional pleasure by surprising his
expectations. The alliteration also includes stressed vowels (Tharaud 34).
Prof. Magoun, in examining the poem, considers it probable that a high percentage of the language in
Beowulf is formulas or phrases repeated from a common bank of phraseology from which all poets
drew their language (88 89). From this common bank the poets drew out what they need based on the
requirements of alliteration. In his essay The Making of an Anglo Saxon Poem, Robert P. Creed agrees
that alliteration was the poet s basis for making his choice of words:
I shall therefore take only a very small portion of Beowulf, eight verses (four lines), and attempt, by
means of references to similar verses and lines in the rest of the poem and in other surviving Anglo
Saxon poems, to illustrate the thesis that the making of any Anglo Saxon poem was a process of
choosing rapidly and largely on the basis of alliterative [italics mine] needs not between individual
words but between formulas (142).
The alliteration in the poem was so

Analysis Of A Room With A View
A Room With a View by E.M. Forster is a classic tale about a girl from Elizabethan era England trying
to find independence and purpose in the world. Lucy, the novel s main character, embarks on a
journey to Florence, Italy with her cousin during which her whole perspective is refreshed. She
experiences many new things and shares exciting times with people she knows and meets, and feels
like a new person from it. But, when she arrives back home in England, she begins to feel the
enclosure of society back on her again. Florence is a place where she can be herself, and her home on
Summer Street in England is a place where she feels the full force of class restriction. Lucy arrived in
Florence without much of an expectation. All she knew is that she wanted to experience things like
she never had before. Her cousin and chaperone for the trip, Miss Bartlett, insisted on protecting her
so she wouldn t upset Lucy s mother. Lucy, however, wanted to feel the winds of independence roll
over her, and convinced her cousin to loosen the reigns on her a bit. After an incident in which Lucy
had her guidebook stolen from her, she was left alone on the streets of Florence, with nothing but
herself standing in her way. Florence was described as a magic city where people thought and did the
most extraordinary things that has the power, perhaps, to evoke passions, good and bad, and bring
them speedily to a fulfillment (Page 55). Lucy began to feel this magic of Florence in full force,
especially as she became involved with George Emerson, a young man she had met there. George was
of particular interest to Lucy, as he was trustworthy, intelligent, and even kind (Page 44). She shared
her first kiss with him, albeit somewhat surprisingly, and even more surprisingly, witnessed a murder
in the streets. Things like this could have never happened for Lucy in her hometown. The excitement,
the passion, the freedom, all are things she longed for living in protection. All of this came to a
screeching halt for Lucy, however, when it was time to return home to England. After a few months
elsewhere in Italy, Lucy returned home with a man named Cecil she had met and was now engaged to
marry. To her dismay, she saw very quickly what

Best Strozog Films
Review of Strozsek What an incredible movie! This may be one of the best Herzog films. Normally
his films focus on more grand elements, conquests and feats of strength. This film, however, is about
the mundane aspects of life. The fascinating thing about it is how Herzog manages to blend the
mundane and epic together into a cohesive whole. Shots like the removal of Bruno s house carry the
same epic weight of Aguirre, yet they are normal everyday things. The first aspect that struck home is
the acting. Bruno Schleinstein is incredible. He is funny and tragic simultaneously. He contorts his
face in ways that perfectly describe his character emotion and aren t found anywhere else. There have
been a lot of loveable failures in cinema, but Bruno is one of a kind. After reading about the actor s
life, the performance is even more of a feat. He s bringing such personal things to the film, it s
completely engaging. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Chet Atkins score is incredible and the harmonica track is excellently executed. Unlike the
Aguirre soundtrack, this takes on the environment much more. The earlier music that Bruno performs
is very German sounding, while the later non diegetic music is very American sounding. It establishes
the environment, as well as some subtle cultural differences. Also, the diegetic music was excellent in
the way it characterized the people. Bruno s performances alone are half the reason he is so magic as a
character. He isn t quite perfect; in fact, he makes a lot of mistakes. His pacing is sometimes believed
to be inconsistent and there is somewhat of a loss to natural flow; However, as he says in the movie, it
s better to have a broken piano than none at all. Another wonderful moment is when the old man plays
Moonlight Sonata. A very strange and entrancing clip. Herzog may be shooting very normal things,
but he still has an eye for an extraordinary

The Beatitudes In Jesus sermon On The Mount In Matthew 5
Conforming to the world brings shame, but standing with the righteous brings eternal glory. In Jesus
Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5, He gives the world a path to follow, an outline of how to
live commonly known as the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are puzzling to us. They are difficult to put
together rationally and find the logic in them. God s plans for our world and for our lives are not
always logical to us, but He is God and does things for reasons we cannot understand. We can see
through the Beatitudes and Beyond the Gates of Splendor that the Peacemaker is the Child of God
who can rejoice when persecuted for righteousness sake. This type of persecution shows that the
Peacemaker has been recognized as someone who has not conformed to the pattern of this world, and
has lived a life worthy of their call of Christ Jesus which then allows them to enter the Kingdom of
Heaven and be called children of God.
One of the biggest contradictions we seem to be faced with in the Beatitudes is the eighth and final
one. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against
you because of me. Rejoice and be glad because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way
they persecuted the prophets who were before you (Matthew 5:10). It does not seem to be logical to be
blessed when evil is against you. I struggle with the

Influences Of Existentialism In Literature
Influence of Existentialism in Literature:
Existentialism became an essential part of the 20th century as humanity suffered through great
challenges during that time. The threat of the nuclear bombing, destruction of humanity and sudden
loss of loved ones had caused people to suffer from alienation and despair. Existentialism, in those
times, clearly stated that there is no palliative for such situations. It was thus, criticized to be a
disheartening philosophy for dismal times. However this movement was not a discouraging one. It just
freely stated that the responsibility of one s actions lies on one s own shoulders. It asserted that
through self determination, without any support of conventional doctrines, people can overcome their
problems.
Existentialism had a great influence on literature. Many people consider existentialist literature a
devaluation of traditional moral values. Nonetheless, existentialists considered their approach creative
and thought that this innovative practice of ethics was a new ray of hope for humanity.
The founders of Existentialism in literature are Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzche, and Jean Paul
Sartre. The field of Existentialism is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

readers are introduced to a fast talking, mentally unstable protagonist who regurgitates a lot of the
ideas of existentialism, yet simultaneously cannot grasp the import of the philosophy he recites. Many
other books, poetry and theatre interpret the idea of Existentialism in modern times. So it is safe to say
that the influence of existential thought is not totally swept away, as many filmmakers and novelists
still claim the likes of Kafka or Sartre as prime

Simulation Based Teaching Of Fluid Balance Interpretation...
Simulation Based teaching of fluid balance interpretation and prescription of intravenous fluids
Problem Identification Interpretation of the fluid balance of hospitalized patients and prescription of
intravenous fluids is one of the core clinical skills required for the practice of medicine in almost
every specialty. Failure to follow the best practice guidelines can result in increased morbidity and
mortality in cases of under prescription, over prescription or from prescribing the wrong type of fluids
as highlighted in the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD)
report about the perioperative mortality 1999. [1] The report emphasized on the importance of fluid
prescription and recommended that it should be considered as important as drug prescription. National
guidelines exist for the best practice regarding this matter where it reports that about 20 % of patients
receiving IV fluids suffer an unwanted effect , additionally those guidelines are supported by local
protocols within the individual NHS institutes. Moreover, most trusts employ a NICE lead for the
implementation of the fluid prescription guidelines in addition to supervising an ongoing auditing
process to evaluate local practices. [2]. Despite the importance of the issue and the resources allocated
to the topic; the task of fluid prescribing is often left to the least trained members of staff to perform,
such as the foundation trainees with very limited training in the subject.

Factors That Led To The Collapse Of The Mayan Civilization
The Maya civilization was one of the most successful civilizations of its time. The Mayans were one
of the most dominant civilizations in Mesoamerica, located in tropic lowlands in what is now known
as Guatemala. The Mayans were very religious, as they worshipped gods that were related to nature,
such as a rain god and a sun god. They were an agricultural society that mostly relied on trade in order
to get their resources. Mayans were often seen as advanced compared to other European civilizations
with their arts, writing, agricultural techniques, and their architecture. Even though the Maya
civilization was very successful, it eventually collapsed. Historians often debate about how such an
advanced civilization could have collapsed. Although there were many factors that contributed to the
collapse of the Mayan, the three that contributed the most were the collapsing social structure, a
decrease in resources, and as well as drought.
One factor that contributed to the Maya Collapse was the fact that their once strong social class was
beginning to fall. The Maya social class was made up of nobles, farmers and slaves. Over time, this
system started to become unorganized. In his article, Maya Collapse: Recent Insight on the Classic
Maya Collapse, Joel Palka describes that Mayan cities either fell or thrived due to the way their
politics and religion were handled. The cities that thrived either negotiated their power or had it
distributed equally through calendar cycles. The

that would forever change their countries. While both countries hoped that these revolutions would

final government outcomes differed. These two countries also faced different ideologies in the early
1900 s. In Russia, the main focus was to end communism which is when the government controls all

government only controls a part of the resources. The Mexican Revolution arose in 1910 from social,

The term Manifest Destiny has been a paramount concept ever since its emergence during the time of
Andrew Jackson and his ideals of westward expansion for the United States. Prior to the term of
Manifest Destiny, the Monroe Doctrine of 1823 was in full effect, in which the argument could be
made that these two concepts are somehow correlated. The primary source documents such as The
Monroe Doctrine Declares the Western Hemisphere Closed to European Intervention, 1823, and
essays such as, Expansionist Ambition, Not Republican Ideals, will support the structure of this essay,
showing that there is a reflection of Manifest Destiny ideology in the Monroe Doctrine. Using various
primary and secondary sources from Major Problems in American Foreign Relations, this short essay
will argue that the Monroe Doctrine of 1823 was a reflection of Manifest Destiny ideology. Defining
the two concepts of Manifest Destiny and The Monroe Doctrine, will be the main element in this first
body paragraph. The term Manifest Destiny illustrates the principles that are given by God, in which
give the United States pure justifications that entail expansion for universal equality and American
greatness.1 In other words, the concept given by God, Manifest Destiny, describes America s purpose
to expand its natural borders, and to expand to areas that are unfit to govern. The Monroe Doctrine of

History of Music in Horror Films Essay
A history of the sound in horror films
Horror films are known for their ability to scare audiences, to get the audience s hearts racing, their
blood rushing. A good horror film will cause viewers to be on the edge of their seats and having their
perception of reality distorted as they attempt to understand the unraveling plot of the horror film. The
tone of the film aides in the amount of suspense that a horror film produces, since a much darker film
will create a more suspenseful atmosphere than one that is more focused on campy monster makeup.
But the tone of a film is determined by the sound of the film, or in other words, the score. Sound or

The tones and sounds created centered around a central melody that was known as the monster s

This theme of monster music and a large emphasis on the final battle between good and evil continued
throughout most film and saw a resurgence in the late 70s and early 80s with slasher films. Nightmare
on Elm Street was one of the first slasher films to have a distinct theme that played throughout the
movie whenever there was a conflict between the slasher, Freddy Krueger and the final girl. These
songs were also some of the first to mirror the action on screen and create a strong symbolic tie
between the direction given by the director and the composing of the music.
During the final confrontation, Nancy in A Nightmare on Elm Street descends into the basement and

Nancy s movement into where we are led to believe Freddy resides. Without this ominous feel, the

Woodlice are nocturnal and are classified as primary decomposers, feeding on organic materials such
as bark, leaves, dead plant and animal matter and hardwood, decomposing the debris into soil which is
vital for the ecosystem (Nardi 2009, Poole 1994 amp; CapineraI 2010). Woodlice can also be
classified as secondary decomposers as they feed on their own faeces to replenish the copper
containing oxygen absorbing pigment lost when they defecate. Urine is also recycled in the water
conducting channels along with water that is taken up from the environment, the ammonia of the urine
evaporates and from the remaining water in the water conducting channels oxygen is absorbed by

Tender Is Night Character Analysis
The Tragic Downfall of Promising Psychiatrist Dick Diver
The work of F. Scott Fitzgerald The Tender is Night shows us how a character having strong qualities
such as education and career may collapse in search of entering into a new world which results in
hamartia or a fatal flaw. It is the protagonist young American Doctor Dick Diver s tragic downfall
which attracts many critics attention on the work who is an educated promising psychiatrist and
traveling man that shuttles between Vienna and Zurich in the pursuit of to be a good psychologist
maybe to be the greatest one that ever lived (Fitzgerald 147). It can be considered as an irony that as a
talented psychiatrist Dick Diver who has a published book A Psychology for Psychiatrists and has
ambitious desire in finding out ways for the mental illnesses Diver s himself ironically gets caught to a
kind of mental illness that causes his frustration. In this perspective, in the novel the protagonist Diver
s trauma is considered in a way as a good example for many psychiatrists who are in search of causes
and solutions for mental illnesses together with Nicole character in the novel. According to Bruccoli,
the novel is a new plot set in Europe about an American psychiatrist who is ruined by his marriage to a
wealthy mental patient (Bruccoli 330) while some critics consider the novel as breakdowns:
breakdowns in marriage, friendships, and individuals (Lucas 89). It has been argued that the title of
Fitzgerald s novel Tender Is the Night has taken it from the work of John Keats s Ode to A
Nightingale. According to William E. Doherty the novel Tender Is the Night also gets its essence from
Keat s work.
The title of the novel and the epigraph Fitzgerald offers illuminate the significance of night and
darkness in the story. An enquiry reveals a complicated and careful symbolic structure in Tender Is the
Night involving a contrast between the night and the day, darkness and light (6)
Although the novel is the last completed work of Fitzgerald one of the difficulties that the novel
presents is its ambiguity in understanding the chronological order of the work. While in the

In 2009 food detective Michael Pollan published an eye opening book called The Omnivore s

The Civil War And The American War Essay
The war with the most death of Americans was not the World Wars, Cold War, Vietnam War or Korean
War, but the Civil War. The Civil War is one of the most monumental moments in the United States
that threaten the stability of the Union. The United States was split into two opposing sides, the Union
and the Confederates, with opposing ideas; Americans pinned against one another in combat for their
ideals and goals. The Civil War has multiple causes, but the most renowned reason was the
abolishment of slavery. With the conclusion of the Civil War and the defeat of the Confederates, many
efforts were made to establish the freedom of the slaves, such as the Thirteenth Amendment of the
Constitution, and the status of freedman. However, with the discontent that was harbored in the former
Confederates, white southerners [tried to] reestablished civil authority in the former Confederate states
in 1865 and 1866 ; this thus led to the creation of the Black Codes ( Black Codes. History.com). The

The Dark Knight Rises Film
Even to this day, many have failed to replicate what has been known to be the most successful
superhero trilogy of all time. With awards totaling south of over seventy total wins and over 100
nominations, the Dark Knight Rises remains to be everything a film needs to be to always remain a
timeless classic. The method the team used to overwhelm the world with this immaculate trilogy was

There is nothing that I feel would have prevented this situation at this time. I do feel that education on
the patient s diagnoses and condition may have helped with the situation escalating so rapidly. Anyone
that does not understand the diagnoses or condition will do their research, which may not be legit or
truthful. As the medical professional, we have resources that provide appropriate and adequate
education to the patient and their family member. Providing this adequate education would have made
providing the care easier at the time that the violence

Causes Of Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a range of predicaments identified by challenges with social skills,
repetitive behaviour, speech and non verbal communication. Signs of this disorder usually come to the
parents attention during the first two years of the child s life. Although in some cases children reach
their developmental milestones at a normal pace and then start to relapse, most often these signs
develop gradually. The diagnostic criteria require that these symptoms become apparent in early
childhood, generally before age three. Autism is formed due to a mixture of genetic and environmental
factors. In some circumstances Autism is associated with certain diseases gained during pregnancy by
making use of drugs and alcohol or by receiving infections

  • 2. Essay about The Words of the Dying Gaunt The idea of England as a second paradise in a postlapsarian world was a popular thought in Shakespeare s day. Not only did Englanders compare their land the to Biblical Eden, but also to Classical legends that would have flourished in the Renaissance era. The fact that Britain is an island isolated from the rest of the world invited the comparison of England to mythical islands such as the Islands of the Blest and Homer s Ogygia (Mackenzie 319). Such comparisons surely originated in the strong patriotism that thrived in the Elizabethan era. Shakespeare capitalized on this feeling through his history plays, which both instructed his audience on England s past and fed the patriotic ego of her citizens (Reese 46). Nowhere does ... The next portion of Gaunt s speech reverberates the idea of England as a second paradise. The image of England throughout Richard II is not only presented through pictures of glorious landscape and well tended gardens, but through its citizens, both royal and common (Stauffer 92). Gaunt fluidly but forcefully presents images of England throughout his speech. He gives a list of qualities in a rhythmic tour de force (Best), which connects all of England s attributes with the word this : This royal throne of kings, this sceptered isle, This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, This other Eden, demi paradise, This fortress built by Nature for herself (40 44) These images present England as embodying physical attributes given by God. Gaunt continues this list of attributes by also praising England s citizens by referring to them as This happy breed of men (45). Comparison Of Benjamin Franklin and Frederick Douglass America, a land with shimmering soil where golden dust flew and a days rain of money could last you through eternity. Come, You Will make it in America. That was the common theme of those who would remove to America. It is the common hymn, the classic American rags to riches myth, and writers such as Benjamin Franklin and Frederick Douglass had successfully embraced it in their works.Franklin and Douglass are two writers who have quite symmetrical styles and imitative chronology of events in their life narratives. They both approached their story with a rags to riches idea. In addition, we must realize that both Franklin and Douglass are powerful writers. In that sense, I ... Little by little as Douglass gained in these assets which eventually became his tool for his departure from slavery.Another similarity between these two narrations is the assimilation of a created character by the authors themselves. The chronology and the events that happened in the lives of the authors in their narrations remained questionable. They picked the events that would only exemplify the characters that they want to portray. Thus, even though both works are autobiographical, their roles they claimed to be in their narration are exaggerated. Remember that they want to set themselves up as poor, down beaten characters at the beginning and slowly rise to power and success. For example, Franklin used descriptions such as I was dirty from my journey; my pockets were stuff d out with shirts and stockings... with a roll under each arm, and eating the other, to really give reader a sense of his conditions when he ran away. Douglass used the same approach to stress his poor conditions. The use of comparison of his slave status with farm animals and great ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Romanticism In The Last Of The Mohicans Aspect of Romanticism in The Last of The Mohicans Romanticism is an artistic and intellectual movement mainly in France and England that started in the last 18th century and came to America in the 19th century. Honor, Nationalism, Superstition/Horror, Pastoralism, and Love are all the aspects of romanticism that showed up in Michael Mann s movie The Last of The Mohicans. Honor is good reputation: good quality or character as judged by other people. Two subcategories of honor are heroes, persons who are admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities, and chivalry, the qualities of an ideal knight. The server makes each guest feel like they are special and the quality of service received reflects just that. Each step of service not only makes the guest feel welcome and appreciated, but also contributes to the entire experience. Without one element of this process going as expected, it can throw off the entire experience and turn a good one into a disaster. To have a good dining experience, a server must provide the following step of service to a guest: the meet and greet, taking the orders, the delivery of the meal, checking back, clearing of the table, dessert/coffee/tea, and delivery of the check. The first and most important step of service is the meet and greet. This is the server s first impression and can set the mood for the remainder of the guest dining experience. The server must always approach the table with warm welcoming smile, say hello, and introduce him/herself by name. Remember this smile needs to be genuine. The server should ask how the guests are doing and be sincere about it. If the introduction includes a first name, the guests can actually make a personal connection to the server. • 6. The Wage Gap Is A Conflict Within The Work Force The occupational wage gap has always been and still continues to be a conflict within the work force. The gender wage gap is defined as the average income of a male compared to the average income of a female. There have been a few laws that were put into effect due to women s efforts to create fairness in the workplace. The first law, called the Equal Pay Act of 1963 signed into law by President John F. Kennedy, requires men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission). The Paycheck Fairness Act is a recent extension of the Equal Pay Act, it gives workers added protection to take action in the wage discrimination (National Women s Law Center). When comparing full time and year round workers, 23.5% is the gap between the annual male earnings compared to women and that has not changed much since 2001 (Burns, 1). In the profession I have chosen, there is quite a difference in dominant gender between dental hygienists and dentists. Dental hygiene is a very female dominated field of work, although few male dental hygienists exist. Due to the gender roles our society has molded, hygiene is usually compared to nursing because it revolves around care giving service and many believe that is not a task men are usually willing to do. Contrary to belief, men can be just as, if not more, nurturing than women. On the other hand, women are perfectly capable of becoming dentists as well. The culture we were raised in ... Sidney Lumet directed the movie Fail Safe, which has multiple instances where a verdict to act, despite the prewar conditions, was hard to delineate between a just and unjust judgement. Of all the instances in the movie, the decisions made compelled the viewer to question the ideas the political leaders were making, just or unjust. • 12. Political, Economic, And Political Changes In The Middle Ages In the High Middle ages (after 1000 A.D) and beyond there were major political, economic and intellectual changes that happed across Europe. The changes helped bring about new eras to the European landscape. As Europe was brought into these new eras, it thus brought upon the end of the Dark Ages. Looking first at the political changes that took place across Europe we can break it down into four key areas, the first of which is England. England had suffered more from Viking invasions than any other part of Europe and eventually fell under Viking rule with Viking Canute (McKay 254). Until Canute passed away and William of Normandy claimed the throne, the English kings had little power outside of calling for war. After William of Normandy took control of the throne, he limited the power of the nobles and church officials, and built a unified monarchy to help centralize England (McKay 255). Along with this he created laws, including a centralized tax system, and took control of the judicial system. This centralizing of England continued with William s successors. In 1215, King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta which limited the power of the king and later became the basis for Parliament. The next area is France, which was known as the most powerful kingdom within Europe, but the kings themselves lacked power. Again this changed once it fell under a new ruler, Philip II. Philip II began waging war and expanding their territory starting with Normandy. Along with this, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Epic of Beowulf Essay Alliteration in Beowulf The diction of the Old English poem Beowulf is distinguished primarily by its heavy use of allliteration, or the repetition of the initial sounds of words. In the original manuscript version of the poem, alliteration is employed in almost every line (or two half lines); in modern translations of the poem this is not so. Beowulf uses alliteration [my italics] and accent to achieve the poetic effect which Modern English poetry achieves through the use of poetic feet, each having the same number of syllables and the same pattern of accent (Wilkie 1271). In lines 4 and 5 of the poem we find: Oft Scyld Scefing sceapena preatum monegum ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such stressed alliterative binding together created hundreds of pairs that are used over and over, such as halig/heofon holy/heaven, dryhten/dugud lord/troop, fyren/feond sin/enemy. The pairs need not be complementary, but rather can be contrastive, like eadig/earm happy/wretched and wearm/winter warm/winter. These dictional contrasts provide the listener additional pleasure by surprising his expectations. The alliteration also includes stressed vowels (Tharaud 34). Prof. Magoun, in examining the poem, considers it probable that a high percentage of the language in Beowulf is formulas or phrases repeated from a common bank of phraseology from which all poets drew their language (88 89). From this common bank the poets drew out what they need based on the requirements of alliteration. In his essay The Making of an Anglo Saxon Poem, Robert P. Creed agrees that alliteration was the poet s basis for making his choice of words: I shall therefore take only a very small portion of Beowulf, eight verses (four lines), and attempt, by means of references to similar verses and lines in the rest of the poem and in other surviving Anglo Saxon poems, to illustrate the thesis that the making of any Anglo Saxon poem was a process of choosing rapidly and largely on the basis of alliterative [italics mine] needs not between individual words but between formulas (142). • 22. Analysis Of A Room With A View A Room With a View by E.M. Forster is a classic tale about a girl from Elizabethan era England trying to find independence and purpose in the world. Lucy, the novel s main character, embarks on a journey to Florence, Italy with her cousin during which her whole perspective is refreshed. She experiences many new things and shares exciting times with people she knows and meets, and feels like a new person from it. But, when she arrives back home in England, she begins to feel the enclosure of society back on her again. Florence is a place where she can be herself, and her home on Summer Street in England is a place where she feels the full force of class restriction. Lucy arrived in Florence without much of an expectation. All she knew is that she wanted to experience things like she never had before. Her cousin and chaperone for the trip, Miss Bartlett, insisted on protecting her so she wouldn t upset Lucy s mother. Lucy, however, wanted to feel the winds of independence roll over her, and convinced her cousin to loosen the reigns on her a bit. After an incident in which Lucy had her guidebook stolen from her, she was left alone on the streets of Florence, with nothing but herself standing in her way. Florence was described as a magic city where people thought and did the most extraordinary things that has the power, perhaps, to evoke passions, good and bad, and bring them speedily to a fulfillment (Page 55). Lucy began to feel this magic of Florence in full force, especially as she became involved with George Emerson, a young man she had met there. George was of particular interest to Lucy, as he was trustworthy, intelligent, and even kind (Page 44). She shared her first kiss with him, albeit somewhat surprisingly, and even more surprisingly, witnessed a murder in the streets. Things like this could have never happened for Lucy in her hometown. The excitement, the passion, the freedom, all are things she longed for living in protection. All of this came to a screeching halt for Lucy, however, when it was time to return home to England. After a few months elsewhere in Italy, Lucy returned home with a man named Cecil she had met and was now engaged to marry. To her dismay, she saw very quickly what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Best Strozog Films Review of Strozsek What an incredible movie! This may be one of the best Herzog films. Normally his films focus on more grand elements, conquests and feats of strength. This film, however, is about the mundane aspects of life. The fascinating thing about it is how Herzog manages to blend the mundane and epic together into a cohesive whole. Shots like the removal of Bruno s house carry the same epic weight of Aguirre, yet they are normal everyday things. The first aspect that struck home is the acting. Bruno Schleinstein is incredible. He is funny and tragic simultaneously. He contorts his face in ways that perfectly describe his character emotion and aren t found anywhere else. There have been a lot of loveable failures in cinema, but Bruno is one of a kind. After reading about the actor s life, the performance is even more of a feat. He s bringing such personal things to the film, it s completely engaging. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Chet Atkins score is incredible and the harmonica track is excellently executed. Unlike the Aguirre soundtrack, this takes on the environment much more. The earlier music that Bruno performs is very German sounding, while the later non diegetic music is very American sounding. It establishes the environment, as well as some subtle cultural differences. Also, the diegetic music was excellent in the way it characterized the people. Bruno s performances alone are half the reason he is so magic as a character. He isn t quite perfect; in fact, he makes a lot of mistakes. His pacing is sometimes believed to be inconsistent and there is somewhat of a loss to natural flow; However, as he says in the movie, it s better to have a broken piano than none at all. Another wonderful moment is when the old man plays Moonlight Sonata. A very strange and entrancing clip. Herzog may be shooting very normal things, but he still has an eye for an extraordinary ... In Jesus Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5, He gives the world a path to follow, an outline of how to live commonly known as the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are puzzling to us. They are difficult to put together rationally and find the logic in them. God s plans for our world and for our lives are not always logical to us, but He is God and does things for reasons we cannot understand. We can see through the Beatitudes and Beyond the Gates of Splendor that the Peacemaker is the Child of God who can rejoice when persecuted for righteousness sake. This type of persecution shows that the Peacemaker has been recognized as someone who has not conformed to the pattern of this world, and has lived a life worthy of their call of Christ Jesus which then allows them to enter the Kingdom of Heaven and be called children of God. One of the biggest contradictions we seem to be faced with in the Beatitudes is the eighth and final one. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Influences Of Existentialism In Literature Influence of Existentialism in Literature: Existentialism became an essential part of the 20th century as humanity suffered through great challenges during that time. The threat of the nuclear bombing, destruction of humanity and sudden loss of loved ones had caused people to suffer from alienation and despair. Existentialism, in those times, clearly stated that there is no palliative for such situations. It was thus, criticized to be a disheartening philosophy for dismal times. However this movement was not a discouraging one. It just freely stated that the responsibility of one s actions lies on one s own shoulders. It asserted that through self determination, without any support of conventional doctrines, people can overcome their problems. Existentialism had a great influence on literature. Many people consider existentialist literature a devaluation of traditional moral values. The Mayans were one of the most dominant civilizations in Mesoamerica, located in tropic lowlands in what is now known as Guatemala. The Mayans were very religious, as they worshipped gods that were related to nature, such as a rain god and a sun god. They were an agricultural society that mostly relied on trade in order to get their resources. Mayans were often seen as advanced compared to other European civilizations with their arts, writing, agricultural techniques, and their architecture. Even though the Maya civilization was very successful, it eventually collapsed. Historians often debate about how such an advanced civilization could have collapsed. Although there were many factors that contributed to the collapse of the Mayan, the three that contributed the most were the collapsing social structure, a decrease in resources, and as well as drought. One factor that contributed to the Maya Collapse was the fact that their once strong social class was beginning to fall. The Maya social class was made up of nobles, farmers and slaves. Over time, this system started to become unorganized. In his article, Maya Collapse: Recent Insight on the Classic Maya Collapse, Joel Palka describes that Mayan cities either fell or thrived due to the way their politics and religion were handled. The Civil War is one of the most monumental moments in the United States that threaten the stability of the Union. The United States was split into two opposing sides, the Union and the Confederates, with opposing ideas; Americans pinned against one another in combat for their ideals and goals. The Civil War has multiple causes, but the most renowned reason was the abolishment of slavery. With the conclusion of the Civil War and the defeat of the Confederates, many efforts were made to establish the freedom of the slaves, such as the Thirteenth Amendment of the Constitution, and the status of freedman.
