Error analysis is a technique to identify or
interpreting systematic of errors that made the
learner who are studying a foreign language or
second language by using theories or procedures
based on linguistics.
Example :
I realize this is the best thing
Realize = realized; error in tense form
Is = was; error in tense form
Definition
• Mistake is the deviation caused by performance factors
such as limited memory, spelling pronunciation,
emotional distress. Such an mistake is easily corrected
if the speaker or the speaker reminded. While the error
is systematic deviations and consistent and
characteristic language the learner.
• Mistakes can be self-corrected with or without being
pointed out to the speaker but errors cannot be self-
corrected.
Difference Between Error and Mistake
• Error Analysis has had a long history as far as
second language learning is concerned but in
the early years before WW II there was not a
drive for deep research. Also, with
behaviorism coming to the forefront.
• Error Analysis again emerged into scientific
thought and fixated.
History Of Error Analysis
• Stephen Pit Corder is credited with reviving
the interest in Error Analysis. Error Analysis in
Second Language Acquisition was established
in the 1960s. He known for his contribution to
the study of Error Analysis and instrumental in
developing the field of applied linguistics in
the UK.
• S. Pit Corder was probably the first to point out and
discuss the importance of errors learners make in
course of their learning a second language. Soon after,
the study and analysis of learners’ errors took a
prominent place in applied linguistics.
• The process of second language learning is not very
much different from learning a first language, and the
feedback a L2 learner gets upon making errors benefits
him in developing the L2 knowledge.
Importance of Error
In second language acquisition, error analysis studies
the types and causes of language errors.Errorsareclassifiedaccordingto
modality (i.e., level of proficiency in speaking,
writing, reading, listening)
linguistic levels (i.e., pronunciation, grammar,
vocabulary, style)
form (e.g., omission, insertion, substitution)
type (systematic errors/errors in competence vs.
occasional errors/errors in performance)
cause (e.g., interference, interlanguage)
norm vs. system
