Sunshine and Showers
Jesus said that His father “makes his sun to rise on the evil
and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust”
(Matthew 5:45).
God’s blessings are so abundant that it is sometimes easy for
us to take some of them for granted.
The blessings of sunshine and rain just keep coming and we
continue to enjoy them. To whom do they come? Are God’s
sunshine and rain only for good people?
Our Lord said that the loving Father does not discriminate.
Sunshine and showers are generously given by our heavenly
Father to all mankind, both good and evil.
So we should never allow ourselves to be misled into
thinking that the reception of these enjoyable blessings from
God shows His approval of our lives.
What should a person do who knows his or her life is not
pleasing to God, even though His great blessings such as
sunshine and showers continue? The Bible says that the
goodness of God ought to lead one to repentance (Romans 2:4).
Sunshine and showers are some of God’s good gifts from
above. Spiritual blessings offered to Christ’s followers are even
far greater!

(Deut. 17:10)
With His Last Breath
Darren Holt was the preacher for the Figueroa
Church of Christ in Los Angeles, CA. On Sunday,
October 25, 2015, he drew his last breath.
It seemed to be just like any other Sunday and any
other sermon. As he came to the end of his lesson, he
stepped down from the podium and told the
congregation he needed to sit down.
While resting on the front pew, and in his final
breaths, he uttered the words, “If you are not a
Christian, say yes to Him. You’ve heard the Word.
Believe it. Repent of your sins, confess Christ, be
baptized.”
After these incredible words, Darren Holt became
unresponsive. Several members with medical training
administered CPR until the paramedics arrived and
rushed him to the hospital. Sadly, all efforts were
unsuccessful. He passed away a short time later at the
hospital. He had drawn his last breath, uttered his last
words, and taken his last action.
Every breath we take brings us closer to our last.
We do not know when our final life-sustaining draw
will be. While we should not live in a panic, we need
to live with a sense of urgency.
We do not know what our lives will be like
tomorrow, or even if we will have a tomorrow (James
4:14). Like the rich farmer, tonight could be when we
leave this world (Luke 12:26-21).
Darren Holt used his final words to tell people
what they needed to do to be saved. As we near our
end, let’s leave no unfinished business. If life ended
today, what would we regret? Who would we wish
we had tried to reach with the gospel? What sins
would we wish were forgiven? What relationships
would we wish we had tried to mend? What
apologies would we wish we had made? What words
of love would we wish we had expressed?
Possibly thinking about such things, David wrote
these humbling words: “Lord, make me to know my
end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may
know how frail I am. Indeed, You have made my
days as handbreadths, and my age is as nothing
before You; certainly every man at his best state is
but vapor” (Psalm 39:4-5).
Let’s seize the moment. Let’s fix what needs
fixing. Let’s use every breath we take today for good
and for God. –Brent Petrillo (Denver, CO)

  • 1. 4 Hugh Vol. 42 October 3, 2017 Number 38 Sunshine and Showers Jesus said that His father “makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45). God’s blessings are so abundant that it is sometimes easy for us to take some of them for granted. The blessings of sunshine and rain just keep coming and we continue to enjoy them. To whom do they come? Are God’s sunshine and rain only for good people? Our Lord said that the loving Father does not discriminate. Sunshine and showers are generously given by our heavenly Father to all mankind, both good and evil. So we should never allow ourselves to be misled into thinking that the reception of these enjoyable blessings from God shows His approval of our lives. What should a person do who knows his or her life is not pleasing to God, even though His great blessings such as sunshine and showers continue? The Bible says that the goodness of God ought to lead one to repentance (Romans 2:4). Sunshine and showers are some of God’s good gifts from above. Spiritual blessings offered to Christ’s followers are even far greater! --Robert Kingsley ELDERS Mike Childers..............397-6453 Dennis Hallmark .........255-5557 Mike Ratliff.................840-2206 DEACONS Wade Bryan.................419-5552 William Harris.............416-8149 Mark Hitt.....................322-0917 Bobby Lindley.............869-0546 Ricky Lindsey .............844-9944 Jeff Mansel..................871-0357 Harold Roby................844-5431 Joe Smith.....................397-4524 Jimmy Spearman.........840-8957 Michael Wilson ...........891-0891 PREACHER .....................................840-5804 SECRETARY Renee Childers Office...........................842-6116 Fax...............................842-7091 E-MAIL churchofchr27789@bellsouth.net WEB PAGE eastmaincoc.com SUNDAY SERVICES Bible Classes............... 9:45 a.m. Morning Worship...... 10:45 a.m. Evening Worship.........5:00 p.m. Singing or Devotional Last Sunday of the Month MID-WEEK SERVICES Wednesday Classes .....7:00 p.m. EAST MAIN CHURCH OF CHRIST 1606 East Main Street P. • 2. With His Last Breath Darren Holt was the preacher for the Figueroa Church of Christ in Los Angeles, CA. On Sunday, October 25, 2015, he drew his last breath. It seemed to be just like any other Sunday and any other sermon. As he came to the end of his lesson, he stepped down from the podium and told the congregation he needed to sit down. While resting on the front pew, and in his final breaths, he uttered the words, “If you are not a Christian, say yes to Him. You’ve heard the Word. Believe it. Repent of your sins, confess Christ, be baptized.” After these incredible words, Darren Holt became unresponsive. Several members with medical training administered CPR until the paramedics arrived and rushed him to the hospital. Sadly, all efforts were unsuccessful. He passed away a short time later at the hospital. He had drawn his last breath, uttered his last words, and taken his last action. Every breath we take brings us closer to our last. We do not know when our final life-sustaining draw will be. While we should not live in a panic, we need to live with a sense of urgency. We do not know what our lives will be like tomorrow, or even if we will have a tomorrow (James 4:14). Like the rich farmer, tonight could be when we leave this world (Luke 12:26-21). Darren Holt used his final words to tell people what they needed to do to be saved. As we near our end, let’s leave no unfinished business. If life ended today, what would we regret? Who would we wish we had tried to reach with the gospel? What sins would we wish were forgiven? What relationships would we wish we had tried to mend? What apologies would we wish we had made? What words of love would we wish we had expressed? Possibly thinking about such things, David wrote these humbling words: “Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am. Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, and my age is as nothing before You; certainly every man at his best state is but vapor” (Psalm 39:4-5). Let’s seize the moment. Let’s fix what needs fixing. Let’s use every breath we take today for good and for God. –Brent Petrillo (Denver, CO) Via House to House: Heart to Heart (Vol. 22, No. 3) Area Youth Meeting The Area Wide Youth Meeting will be held this Sunday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. here at East Main.
