This document summarizes a church newsletter article about how suffering can sharpen, shape, and strengthen people. It provides three examples from literature and history of individuals who were able to use their suffering productively: an imprisoned priest from The Count of Monte Cristo who used his cell as a classroom; a Navy pilot held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam who said his suffering improved him; and Theodore Roosevelt who saw hardship as an opportunity to improve himself with God's help. The article concludes by quoting a Bible passage where Paul says suffering produces endurance, character, and hope.
The document discusses George Washington and how he saw himself as a "work in progress" similar to Gilbert Stuart's unfinished portrait of Washington. It provides examples from Washington's "Rules of Civility" of how he sought self-improvement. The document then discusses how Christians are also a "work in progress" through sanctification by the Holy Spirit. It provides tips on how to keep faith strong and grow closer to God through Bible study, prayer, worship, and fellowship.
The document summarizes a sermon by Pastor Dave Hatch discussing the parable of the Good Samaritan. It analyzes the interpretations of the parable by early Church Fathers including Saint John Chrysostom. They viewed the Samaritan as representing Christ healing the wounded man and bringing him to the Church, represented as a hospital. The document asserts that Our Saviour Lutheran Church fulfills this role as a place where the broken can receive spiritual healing from Christ through the Church. It provides the schedule for upcoming church events in April.
1. The document summarizes 7 principles from the book Prisoners of Our Thoughts for understanding and enduring crucible experiences. The principles focus on choosing your attitude, finding meaning, living in the present moment, avoiding working against yourself, gaining perspective, shifting focus, and living for something beyond yourself.
2. Crucible experiences are hardships that transform and improve us, though they are difficult to endure. The principles aim to help Christians understand and make the most of such trials by relying on spiritual tools like prayer and Scripture.
3. The newsletter issue provides biblical passages about hardships to show readers they are not alone in their struggles and encourages sticking close to God through difficult times.
The pastor visits a nursing home for worship services. He notices that attendance is growing since they made three changes: 1) Learning residents' names and calling them by name, 2) Arranging seating in a circle so residents can see each other, and 3) Adding trivia games to make worship more fun. One resident asks for prayers to walk again. The pastor reassures him they will pray for that, and look forward to the day when he can walk on streets of gold in heaven.
A man in prison wrote to Our Saviour Lutheran Church asking for money and a Bible. The church sent him a nice leather Bible and a large radio handbook instead of money. The man wrote a thankful six-page letter in return and included three handmade paper crosses as gifts. His response showed that small gifts can touch people's hearts.
Our Saviour Lutheran Church is announcing various upcoming events and needs volunteers. On December 2, 9, and 23 help is needed at Lambeau Field. The passage describes how early Christians lived in the world similarly to others but held themselves apart in their faith and devotion to God. It compares Christians to the soul inhabiting the body - living in the world but not being of it. The summary concludes by noting the document shows how Christians endured persecution despite increasing in number.
The document contains announcements for various church activities and volunteer opportunities at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, including:

Can you name this
Christmas film? Here is a
brief description:
“Despite initially
being considered a box office
flop due to high production
costs and stiff competition at
the time of its release, the film
has come to be regarded as a
classic and a staple of
Christmas television around
the world. Theatrically, the
film's break-even point was
actually $6.3 million,
approximately twice the
production cost, a figure it
never came close to achieving
in its initial release. An
appraisal in 2006 reported:
"Although it was not the com-
plete box office failure that
today everyone believes … it
was initially a major
disappointment and
confirmed … "*
Did you guess it? The
film is “It’s a Wonderful
Life”. The motion picture
stars James Stewart as
George Bailey, a man whose
looming self-destruction on
Christmas Eve brings about
the intervention of his guard-
ian angel, Clarence Odbody,
played by Henry Travers.
Clarence shows George all
the lives he has touched and
the assistance he has made
to his community.
As Shakespeare said,
“Life is a stage.” Let’s look at
the main characters in this
film.
Mr. Potter, played by
Lionel Barrymore, is a
heartless slumlord and
majority shareholder in the
Building and Loan. Mr.
Potter, by accident, gets his
hands on an $8,000 bank
deposit belonging to George
Bailey, keeps it and uses the
missing money to try and
bring down George and the
Building and Loan! Mr. Pot-
ter represents the evil side of
every man, like the devil
himself!
George Bailey, an
otherwise balanced person,
was ready to “resign” from
life when he learned of the
loss of the bank deposit. He
wanted to quit, give up and
walk off the stage. He saw
only his problems,
amplifying them and
allowing them to work
against himself. For George,
it was dark and he saw no
hope.
Enter stage left,
Clarence, a representative of
God himself. Clarence, an
angel, brings hope,
understanding and
restoration to George’s will
to live.
Like George Bailey, we can
lose hope, too. Life can get
dark, so dark that logical
choices are out of sight. Our
pride may dismiss assistance
from others. Emotions may
be so toxic that they may
convince us that we “got
ourselves into this” and that
we deserve the situation in
which we are finding
ourselves. Paralysis sets in.
Worst of all,
“resignation” overcomes us,
as mentioned in last month’s
Voice.
We may need a
nudge from our own,
“Clarence,” a messenger from
God, to restore us. Christ is
that “Clarence.” He whispers:
“I made you.” Psalm
139:13-14 – For you created my
inmost being; you knit me
together in my mother’s
womb. I praise you because I
am fearfully and wonderfully
made; your works are
wonderful, I know that full
well.
“You are forgiven for
whatever you may have done
that brought you to this
situation.” Romans 8:1 –
Therefore, there is now no
condemnation for those who
are in Christ Jesus.
Where is Clarence Odbody when you need him?

“I am delivering you hope in
this seemingly hopeless
predicament.” Romans 8:35–
39 – Who shall separate us
from the love of Christ? Shall
trouble or hardship or
persecution or famine or
nakedness or danger or
sword? As it is written: “For
your sake we face death all
day long; we are considered
as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are
more than conquerors
through Him who loves us.
For I am convinced that
neither death nor life,
neither angels or demons,
neither the present or the
future nor any powers,
neither height nor depth, nor
anything else in all creation
will be able to separate us
from the love of God that is
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
“Watch Me make
something good out of this!”
Romans 8:28 – And we know
that in all things God works
for the good of those who
love him, who have been
called according to his
purpose.
“Lean on your
friends, I gave them to you
for times like now!” Phil 4:19
– And my God will meet all
your needs according to his
glorious riches in Christ
Jesus.
George Bailey
learned, through Clarence,
that his life was special.
Until he “saw the light,”
George was focused on
money and other such
troubles. Once he saw that
his life was meaningful and
that his faith, family and
friends where the correct
focus, then his hope was
restored.
The coming of the
Savior is all about just that!
May your focus this
Christmas and for your life,
be on Him first. God is way
bigger than your scrawny
troubles!
Merry Christmas
everyone!

4. P A G E 4 T H E V O I C E
The 2010 Annual Voters’
Meeting is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
on Sunday, Dec. 12. The 9:15 a.m.
service will be shortened to
accommodate the meeting. The
Sunday school Christmas program
will start at 10:45 a.m. in place of
the third service. What a busy
morning!
The agenda for the meeting
will include: a 2010 State of the
Parish Report (hard copies will be
available by December 5), and a
2010 financial status report.
Motions will be requested and
votes cast for approval of the 2011
church budget (on bulletin board
across from the church office),
synod constitution amendments
(also on bulletin board across from
the church office), and election of
officers.
The proposed 2011 church
budget of $684,617 is just about the
same as the 2010 church budget of
$683,166. A reduction in budgeted
unified receipts of about $5,000 in
2011 from 2010 is offset by an
increase in fund raisers of $5,500.
On the expense side, the health
insurance package was lowered one
grade level from A to B, resulting in
lower premiums to the church and
more cost taken on by our workers.
A 2.5 percent wage increase
provides some offset to the
increased health care costs. A
summary of the proposed 2011
budget is provided below.
There are two synod
constitution amendments that
congregations are asked to
approve. Amendment A eliminates
the officer position for synod vice
president: finance treasurer.
Amendment B adds an article to
the synod constitution that clarifies
the relationship between the
bylaws and the constitution.
Election of officers for 2011
will cover the following
nominations: Evangelism chair:
Teri Watt, stewardship chair: Rich
Ryman, treasurer: Gay Pivonka, and
trustees chair: Greg Parks and
president-elect which is still
currently open.
There will also be open
forum and new business sections
on the agenda. If you intend to
bring a new subject to the meeting,
please inform one of the pastors or
Mike Charles (337-0940) of your
intentions before the meeting if
possible. We need to make the
most of our limited time to have
everyone heard.

It was the mid 1950’s. Nate Saint, Jim
Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully and Roger
Youderian, who were all highly gifted
missionaries, left home in the United States
to serve Christ in Ecuador. Together, they wished
to bring the Gospel to one of Ecuador’s most
hostile tribes, the Waorani.
Nate was not only a skilled pilot but also
an inventor. He discovered that if he flew his
Piper in a tight circle with the door off, he could
reel out a long nylon line with a bucket on the
end holding a gift for the tribe below. Nate
dropped gifts: machetes, axe-heads, shirts, shorts,
kettles. The tribe received gifts and, via the
bucket from the airplane, gave gifts back. The
five men were ecstatic. Shortly after introducing
themselves to the tribe, in person, all five
men would be speared to death. But the story
does not end there!

and items of their own. We sent out 15 dish rags, 10 baby hats, five pairs of baby booties, one afghan, nine
sweaters, eight headbands, 21 scarves, 65 pairs of mittens and 107 hats. That is a big blessing for our area.
Although the knitters will be concentrating on specific projects over the next year, your donations of
any knit goods or yarn are always welcome. If you see something at a garage sale or thrift store, wash it up and
donate it. If it is not useable as is, it will be taken apart, and the yarn will be used in another project. Deposit
all knitting donations in the purple tub in the coat room by the second floor elevator.

Many members of Our Saviour are
also members of Thrivent Financial for
Lutherans. Approximately 30 percent of the
Thrivent Financial membership has been
given the opportunity to donate dollars to the
Lutheran organization(s) of their choice. If
you are one of those 30 percent and have not
yet designated those dollars, you could
consider them “left on the table” if you
choose to not designate those dollars by
March 31, 2011, you will have “swiped them
from the table into the garbage can.”
Millions of dollars are ready to be
designated by Thrivent Financial members
worldwide in the Thrivent Choice program. If
you are not sure if you have dollars to
designate, you can go online to
www.thrivent.com and click on Thrivent
Choice (under Thrivent Community) or you
can call Thrivent Financial at 1-800-
THRIVENT (1-800-847-4836), say 'Thrivent
Choice' and talk to a customer service
representative. You will need your social
security number and/or your Thrivent policy
number to sign up. If you and your spouse or
children have policies, each person may have
a separate Thrivent Choice Dollars account;
please make sure each one calls or goes
online.
All of your Thrivent Choice Dollars
do not have to be designated to just one
Lutheran organization. You can select as
many as you want as long as a donation of at
least $5 goes to each one. As your Thrivent
Choice Dollars accumulate after your initial
designation, you can assign them to be
directed automatically to the Lutheran
organization of your choice. Your local
options for donating dollars include, but are
not limited to: Our Saviour Lutheran Church,
Green Bay Trinity Elementary School, NEW
Lutheran High School and Camp Luther.
If you have any additional questions about
this program, please contact Financial
Associate Walter Juhnke at 920-954-9090,
extension three.

"Jesus - There Is More Than Meets
the Eye": Join us for our Advent worship
services on Thursday, Dec. 2 and 9. We will
learn about the "Two Natures of Christ,” as
He is both the "Son of God" and the "Son of
Man.” Jesus is God in human flesh. He is
not half God and half man. He is fully
Divine and fully man. In other words, Jesus
has two distinct natures: Divine and
human. Jesus is the Word who was God
and was with God and was made flesh,
(John 1:1, 14). This means that in the single
person of Jesus, he is both human and
divine nature, God and man. The divine
nature was not changed when the Word
became flesh (John 1:1, 14). Instead, the
Word was joined with humanity (Col. 2:9).
Just like we say in the Catechism, "Who is
Christ? The Son of God, true God and
man." Come and learn more on December 2
- Jesus as The Son of God; December 9,
Jesus, the Son of Man. Worship times are
12:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursdays. Oh, and
don't forget, the Live Nativity on the
evening of December 16 is one of our
Advent services as well.

Green Bay Trinity has many ongoing
fundraisers in which you can participate. Most of these
take little or no effort at all but can make a big
difference to the school.
The Taste of Trinity event, in a new format, is
coming up on March 5, 2011. Donations of items for
the live auction are requested. Watch for more details
in the coming months. If you have any questions, please
contact Ken Baumann or Brenda King.
Market Day brochures can be found at the
Welcome Center. This restaurant quality food is
ordered once per month and delivered to school for
pickup. GB Trinity receives a portion of each
sale. Contact Kellie Meerstein at 655-4673 for
questions specific to this fundraiser.
Do you surf the web? If you use GoodSearch as
your home page, you can donate $0.01 to GB Trinity
each time you perform a search. (You can
decide: NEWLHS also can be adopted through
GoodSearch. It's your choice but please support one of
these great schools through this offer.)
Are you a Target shopper? Register your
Target RedCard and one percent of every purchase will
be donated to GB Trinity. Make sure to register before
you do your Christmas shopping this year!
Volunteers are always needed for the Packer
games. Workers make $50 per game for either GB
Trinity or Our Saviour. Please call Ken Baumann or
Neil Burmeister for details. There are only three
regularly scheduled games left but we could have a
couple home playoff games in January!
Order Scrip from Ken or Kellie for Kwik Trip
or other frequently shopped stores from Our
Saviour. Enroll with Our Saviour and 50 percent of the
profit from your personal purchases of OSLC SCRIP
cards will be credited to your tuition account at GB
Trinity (or OSLC Preschool or youth group).
If you have any questions about any of these
fundraising opportunities, please call (920) 655-4673.
Some great ideas to help Green Bay Trinity
As part of the Whole-Man ministry of Our
Saviour Lutheran, this program features biblical,
Christ-centered teaching that focuses on grief topics
associated with the death of a loved one. The DVD
seminar features nationally respected grief experts
and real-life stories of people, followed by a small
group discussion about what was viewed. Past
participants have related how helpful the
information and follow-up discussions were to them.
Many grieving people find they are only
beginning the work of healing when friends or
family have returned to their daily life routines. Too
often people, including Christians, tend to stuff their
grief instead of allowing it to do the God-given work
for which it is intended. Don't allow fear of what
others may think to keep you from what could help
you. Confidentiality is very much a part of this
program.
Your bereavement experience may be recent
or not so recent. You will find encouragement,
comfort and help in grieving the death of a spouse,
child, parent, sibling, other family member or friend.
No matter what caused your loved one's death, this
is an opportunity to be around people who
understand what you are feeling. You will learn how
to recognize the symptoms of being stuck in grief
and that you do not need to live bound to certain
emotions. You will learn valuable information about
facing your new normal in life and renewing your
hope for the future. Grief-related books/materials are
available for participants to borrow.
The leadership materials have been donated
in memory of Agnes Splitgerber. We thank her
family and friends for their donation.
GriefShare will be held for 13 weeks. It
begins January 11 in the parlor. Please register by
January 5 by calling the church office at 468-4065.
The cost is a $20 free-will donation to cover the cost
of participant materials. Please contact Pastor Greg
with questions.

The Office of Lay
Ministry has been in the
making for more than five
years and is ready to take the
next step: staffing the OLM
office to feed the sheep, equip
the saints and carry the
Gospel to the world by
connecting people's needs
with people's God-given
gifts.
Would you prayerfully
consider giving your time and
talents to the work of our
Lord, serving as an OLM
volunteer? OLM volunteers
must be confirmed members
of Our Saviour Lutheran
Church and available
sometime during regular
church office hours: Monday
through Friday 8:00 a.m.to
4:30 p.m.
Envision yourself in
the OLM office. The sun is
coming in the window; the
coffee pot is brewing, music
playing quietly in the
background. And there you
are with another volunteer
answering the phone;
searching the time and talent
file to help a shut-in get
his/her sidewalk shoveled;
folding bulletins for the
church office; giving a tour of
the building to a
visitor; making phone calls
for a funeral luncheon; giving
out community information to
a walk-in looking for a place
to stay.
The list could go on
and on. The OLM will be
holding an orientation session
for all interested volunteers on
Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, from
8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Please
plan to attend the orientation;
learn how you can be part of
the OLM team, sign-up for
hands-on-training and enjoy
fellowship and treats. If you
plan on attending, please
RVSP by e-mailing the OLM
office at olm@oslc-gb-org or
calling the church office at
468-4065.
