FEBUARY 2015
EVERY DAY IS LENT
By Pastor Dave
We recall the habits of our parents and learn from
then, hopefully to the betterment of our own lives.
Both of my folks grew up on farms in Iowa. We city-
slickers have no real idea of what that farm life was
like. The folks carried the lessons learned there and
brought them into town with them. My folks, having
both been raised directly through the Depression,
were instilled with
additional habits, like
saving.
One of the habits my folks
retained that was on display
at all times was sweeping
the kitchen floor. They would do that methodically at
least once or twice a day. I was too busy with
Matchbox cars and Tonka trucks to pay much
attention. They saw something on that floor that I
never saw - dust, dirt, crumbs and so on.
When we think about why farmers swept the floor,
we see why. Boots and mud
and everything else wanted to
come through that door.
Sweeping the floor has given
way to vacuuming the floor in
many homes. But the habit is
the same, “dutifully remove
what does not belong there and
keep the house in good order.”
That is an excellent weekly habit in our homes, but a
better daily habit.
When our church baking teams used to make scores
of homemade bread for the “kneady” on a weekly
basis, I recall Gene Kuehl coaching the team, “Clean
as you go!” That was something he learned in the
military, as a cook. It works!
Lent is really the year-long habit of “Clean as you
go” - “Sweep the floor of your heart daily”.
Confession of sin is not to be stored up like
accumulating dust, grime, spills and mud, laying
around all week and then finally sweeping them in
the dustpan once a week on Sunday. - Anonymous
Sweeping the soul with ongoing personal
confessional prayer is to be done throughout the day.
Like dust and dirt that does not belong in our kitchen,
Lent reminds us that envy and greed, sloth and
bitterness don’t belong on
the floor of our spiritual
heart. They must be swept
and cleaned out as soon as
we spot them. Repeating -
As soon as we spot them!
For example, you notice that you are angry at
someone. It is affecting your mood. It is bitterness,
but you don’t spot it right away. You are snippy at
others, you are hyper-reflecting on the event that
caused this anger. Your thoughts toward that person
are less than holy. Finally you catch yourself - you
have allowed bitterness to enter your spiritual kitchen
and you are tracking it all over your interior life. The
original mess on the floor has now been tracked far
and wide and you maybe even left your dirty
footprints of bitterness in other folk’s lives!
It’s gotta go!
Our Saviour’s Voice
2
Pause, breath a prayer, “Lord, forgive me for
harboring resentment and bitterness toward George.
Just as You have forgiven me, forgive them. Have
mercy on me, and move in me to have mercy on
them. Lord keep me in the habit of sweeping my
heart. Thank-you for your atoning death on the cross
that forgives; thank you for Your victory displayed
on Easter; Thank you for Your living presence within
me.”
Folks, Lent, which involves a perpetual repentance
(change of mind), is an all-year attitude of the
spiritual heart.

The Green Bay Packers and the Church
By Pastor Dave
At this writing, Packer fans around the world are gearing up for a playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks.
No matter how that game turns out, we can learn a lesson from football.
“Never wait until the last quarter to catch-up”
That goes true with our offerings to the Lord as well. It’s a new year. The church budget is like the Packers in
fresh uniforms at the start of the game. Too many matches have come down to the wire in the last quarter. We
are on the edge of our seat when we get behind in the first quarter, the second quarter, the third quarter…and
then have to scramble during the last quarter.
The church budget is just like that. Our gifts toward His work
here are all too often short in the first, second and third quarters
of the year. Then, during the last quarter of the year, we
scramble to catchup.
The year is new. Let’s check our hearts and our habits, our
intentions and our commitment to that intention, and bring our
sacrificial thank-offerings in on a win-win consistent basis.
It’s not about keeping the lights on, it’s about keeping His light lit in the hearts of God’s people, and sharing
that Light with our community.
Has He not blessed us? Have we responded faithfully with generous gifts back, not in the last quarter of the year
when things are tight, but faithfully throughout the year? It’s time, now, to get into that habit of sacrificial
thankful giving for His work here.

OFFICE CANDY BOWL DONATIONS REQUESTED
We have many holidays that are celebrated during the year and candy is part of every
one of them…of recent holidays, Christmas is just behind us; Valentine’s Day and Easter are just
ahead. If you have extra candy, and you don’t want that temptation in your house, donating to
the office candy bowl is the perfect solution. Or, if you find a great deal on candy after the
holidays, that works, too!
Individually wrapped candy is preferred but other candy, if it can be
distributed easily, is also welcome. Candy not associated to a holiday as
well as fruit snacks, fruit roll-ups, etc. are encouraged and appreciated!
Bags or boxes can be left on the office desk or in the church office mailbox
anytime. Thank you in advance!

YOUNG AND OLD PROVIDE WARMTH TO AREA NEEDY
Chicks with Stix worked all year long to make cold weather items to distribute to those locally in
need. The items below were given in December 2014 to residents of the Freedom House and Golden
House as well as those served by Encompass and the Green Bay School District:
5 scarves 12 pairs of mittens/gloves 1 pair of socks
1 pair of slippers 84 hats 5 headbands
16 hat/mitten sets 4 pillows
More Chicks with Stix members (no age limit…all are invited) are needed to continue this good
work, making warm weather accessories as well as other items (Haiti dolls, pillowcase dresses, etc.)
delivered to Haiti through our very own Friends of Haiti volunteer, Donna Zelazoski, wheelchair
bags and much more.
Our Confirmation youth and other members worked last month during IMPACT night to tie
blankets for the many homeless in our area. A collection of winter hats, gloves, scarves and more
were also collected for many who, for various reasons, have no place to call their own. Thanks to all
who participated and/or donated items. The pickup vehicle was EMPTY when it arrived but FULL
when it left here with all of the donations inside!

What is the significance of Ash Wednesday
and ashes on the forehead?
Q: Would you please explain the significance of Ash Wednesday. I've seen some people in the past with black
ash crosses on their foreheads.
A: Lutheran Worship: History and Practice, a commentary on Lutheran Worship, one of our Synod's hymnals,
says this about ashes on Ash Wednesday: "Other customs may be used, particularly the
imposition of ashes on those who wish it. This ancient act is a gesture of repentance
and a powerful reminder about the meaning of the day. Ashes can symbolize dust-to-
dustness and remind worshipers of the need for cleansing, scrubbing and purifying. If
they are applied during an act of kneeling, the very posture of defeat and submission
expresses humility before God."
The use of ashes on Ash Wednesday is a more recent custom among most LCMS (Lutheran Church Missouri
Synod) congregations, although some have done it for decades. The ashes are usually derived from the burned
palms from the previous Palm Sunday. Experience will show, however, that in obtaining ashes this way, it
doesn't take many ashes to "ash" a whole congregation. Like sin, they are very dirty and go a long way. One
palm leaf will produce enough ashes for several years.
Usually the pastor takes the ashes on the end of his thumb and makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of
each worshiper, saying these words: "Remember: you are dust, and to dust you shall return." This follows most
effectively prior (or as part of) the Service Corporate Confession and Absolution on pp. 290-291 of Lutheran
Service Book.

Do Lutherans give up something for Lent?
Q: Do Lutherans have to give up something for Lent as some other denominations require?
A: From the perspective of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, "giving something up
for Lent" is entirely a matter of Christian freedom. It would be wrong, from our
perspective, for the church to make some sort of "law" requiring its members to "give
something up for Lent," since the Scriptures themselves do not require this. If, on the other
hand, a Christian wants to give something up for Lent as a way of remembering and
personalizing the great sacrifice that Christ made on the cross for our sins, then that
Christian is certainly free to do so--as long as he or she does not "judge" or "look down
on" other Christians who do not choose to do this.

What is the significance of Lent?
Q: What is the significance of Lent?
A: Early in the Church's history, the major events in Christ's life were observed with special observances, such
as His birth, baptism, death, resurrection and ascension. As these observances developed, a period of time was
set aside prior to the major events of Jesus' birth and resurrection as a time of preparation.
During Lent, the Church's worship assumes a more penitential character. The
color for the season is purple, a color often associated with penitence. The
"Hymn of Praise" is omitted from the liturgy. The word "Alleluia" is usually
omitted as well. By not using the alleluia--a joyful expression meaning "Praise
the Lord"--until Easter, the Lenten season is clearly set apart as a distinct time
from the rest of the year. Additionally, it forms a powerful contrast with the
festive celebration of Jesus' resurrection when our alleluias ring loud and clear.
Finally, the penitential character of Lent is not its sole purpose. In the ancient
Church, the weeks leading up to Easter were a time of intensive preparation of the candidates who were to be
baptized at the Easter vigil on Holy Saturday. This time in the Church's calendar was seen as an especially
appropriate time for Baptism because of the relationship between Christ's death and resurrection and our own in
Holy Baptism (see Romans 6:1-11). This focus would suggest that the season of Lent serves not only as a time
to meditate on the suffering that Christ endured on our behalf but also as an opportunity to reflect upon our own
Baptism and what it means to live as a child of God.

1 Our Saviour LutheranChurch, 120 S. Henry Street, Green Bay, Wisconsin, 54302 (920) 468-4065 FEBUARY 2015 EVERY DAY IS LENT By Pastor Dave We recall the habits of our parents and learn from then, hopefully to the betterment of our own lives. Both of my folks grew up on farms in Iowa. We city- slickers have no real idea of what that farm life was like. The folks carried the lessons learned there and brought them into town with them. My folks, having both been raised directly through the Depression, were instilled with additional habits, like saving. One of the habits my folks retained that was on display at all times was sweeping the kitchen floor. They would do that methodically at least once or twice a day. I was too busy with Matchbox cars and Tonka trucks to pay much attention. They saw something on that floor that I never saw - dust, dirt, crumbs and so on. When we think about why farmers swept the floor, we see why. Boots and mud and everything else wanted to come through that door. Sweeping the floor has given way to vacuuming the floor in many homes. But the habit is the same, “dutifully remove what does not belong there and keep the house in good order.” That is an excellent weekly habit in our homes, but a better daily habit. When our church baking teams used to make scores of homemade bread for the “kneady” on a weekly basis, I recall Gene Kuehl coaching the team, “Clean as you go!” That was something he learned in the military, as a cook. It works! Lent is really the year-long habit of “Clean as you go” - “Sweep the floor of your heart daily”. Confession of sin is not to be stored up like accumulating dust, grime, spills and mud, laying around all week and then finally sweeping them in the dustpan once a week on Sunday. - Anonymous Sweeping the soul with ongoing personal confessional prayer is to be done throughout the day. Like dust and dirt that does not belong in our kitchen, Lent reminds us that envy and greed, sloth and bitterness don’t belong on the floor of our spiritual heart. They must be swept and cleaned out as soon as we spot them. Repeating - As soon as we spot them! For example, you notice that you are angry at someone. It is affecting your mood. It is bitterness, but you don’t spot it right away. You are snippy at others, you are hyper-reflecting on the event that caused this anger. Your thoughts toward that person are less than holy. Finally you catch yourself - you have allowed bitterness to enter your spiritual kitchen and you are tracking it all over your interior life. The original mess on the floor has now been tracked far and wide and you maybe even left your dirty footprints of bitterness in other folk’s lives! It’s gotta go! Our Saviour’s Voice

2 Pause, breath aprayer, “Lord, forgive me for harboring resentment and bitterness toward George. Just as You have forgiven me, forgive them. Have mercy on me, and move in me to have mercy on them. Lord keep me in the habit of sweeping my heart. Thank-you for your atoning death on the cross that forgives; thank you for Your victory displayed on Easter; Thank you for Your living presence within me.” Folks, Lent, which involves a perpetual repentance (change of mind), is an all-year attitude of the spiritual heart. No matter how that game turns out, we can learn a lesson from football. “Never wait until the last quarter to catch-up” That goes true with our offerings to the Lord as well. It’s a new year. The church budget is like the Packers in fresh uniforms at the start of the game. Too many matches have come down to the wire in the last quarter. We are on the edge of our seat when we get behind in the first quarter, the second quarter, the third quarter…and then have to scramble during the last quarter. The church budget is just like that. Our gifts toward His work here are all too often short in the first, second and third quarters of the year. Then, during the last quarter of the year, we scramble to catchup. The year is new. Let’s check our hearts and our habits, our intentions and our commitment to that intention, and bring our sacrificial thank-offerings in on a win-win consistent basis. It’s not about keeping the lights on, it’s about keeping His light lit in the hearts of God’s people, and sharing that Light with our community. Has He not blessed us? Have we responded faithfully with generous gifts back, not in the last quarter of the year when things are tight, but faithfully throughout the year? It’s time, now, to get into that habit of sacrificial thankful giving for His work here. Annual Youth Super Bowl Take and Bake Pizza Sale Cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and veggies, OH MY! Continue your super bowl traditions, create new ones or freeze for later occasions with handmade pizzas by the OSLC youth group. Order forms are now available; pick up is Super Bowl Sunday, February 1 between 8:30am and noon. Orders with payment will be accepted in the church office until January 30. We’ll also make a few extras to purchase on pick-up day.

6 What is thesignificance of Ash Wednesday and ashes on the forehead? Q: Would you please explain the significance of Ash Wednesday. I've seen some people in the past with black ash crosses on their foreheads. A: Lutheran Worship: History and Practice, a commentary on Lutheran Worship, one of our Synod's hymnals, says this about ashes on Ash Wednesday: "Other customs may be used, particularly the imposition of ashes on those who wish it. This ancient act is a gesture of repentance and a powerful reminder about the meaning of the day. Ashes can symbolize dust-to- dustness and remind worshipers of the need for cleansing, scrubbing and purifying. If they are applied during an act of kneeling, the very posture of defeat and submission expresses humility before God." The use of ashes on Ash Wednesday is a more recent custom among most LCMS (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod) congregations, although some have done it for decades. The ashes are usually derived from the burned palms from the previous Palm Sunday. Experience will show, however, that in obtaining ashes this way, it doesn't take many ashes to "ash" a whole congregation. Like sin, they are very dirty and go a long way. One palm leaf will produce enough ashes for several years. Usually the pastor takes the ashes on the end of his thumb and makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of each worshiper, saying these words: "Remember: you are dust, and to dust you shall return." This follows most effectively prior (or as part of) the Service Corporate Confession and Absolution on pp. 290-291 of Lutheran Service Book. Article Image Credit: http://www.olmc.net/sites/g/files/g865166/f/201302/ashes.jpg Do Lutherans give up something for Lent? Q: Do Lutherans have to give up something for Lent as some other denominations require? A: From the perspective of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, "giving something up for Lent" is entirely a matter of Christian freedom. It would be wrong, from our perspective, for the church to make some sort of "law" requiring its members to "give something up for Lent," since the Scriptures themselves do not require this. If, on the other hand, a Christian wants to give something up for Lent as a way of remembering and personalizing the great sacrifice that Christ made on the cross for our sins, then that Christian is certainly free to do so--as long as he or she does not "judge" or "look down on" other Christians who do not choose to do this. 7 What is thesignificance of Lent? Q: What is the significance of Lent? A: Early in the Church's history, the major events in Christ's life were observed with special observances, such as His birth, baptism, death, resurrection and ascension. As these observances developed, a period of time was set aside prior to the major events of Jesus' birth and resurrection as a time of preparation. During Lent, the Church's worship assumes a more penitential character. The color for the season is purple, a color often associated with penitence. The "Hymn of Praise" is omitted from the liturgy. The word "Alleluia" is usually omitted as well. By not using the alleluia--a joyful expression meaning "Praise the Lord"--until Easter, the Lenten season is clearly set apart as a distinct time from the rest of the year. Additionally, it forms a powerful contrast with the festive celebration of Jesus' resurrection when our alleluias ring loud and clear. Finally, the penitential character of Lent is not its sole purpose. In the ancient Church, the weeks leading up to Easter were a time of intensive preparation of the candidates who were to be baptized at the Easter vigil on Holy Saturday. This time in the Church's calendar was seen as an especially appropriate time for Baptism because of the relationship between Christ's death and resurrection and our own in Holy Baptism (see Romans 6:1-11). This focus would suggest that the season of Lent serves not only as a time to meditate on the suffering that Christ endured on our behalf but also as an opportunity to reflect upon our own Baptism and what it means to live as a child of God.
