A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOEY
We have this enormous ability as humans to block out the negative and
remember the positive which is born out in the adage, ‘memories make
life sweet.’ We are now entering the Fall Season. What are your
memories of Fall? I am aware that those who grew up in other environs
are apt to say California doesn’t have seasons, yet please indulge for a
moment.
I grew up in central Orange County when truck farms and citrus groves
where virtually everywhere. As the weather began to get cooler, two
things happened. You could smell the orange blossoms as the fruit began
to ripen, and some nights, the fog around my neighborhood was so
dense that driving was quite dangerous. My childhood home was a
couple of long blocks from the main entrance to Disneyland so as you
might imagine the orange trees and farms are long gone. If the lack of
fog is a result of global warming or a simple result of the lack of crops
and orchards, this is for someone with a keener mind with regard to the
scientific world. These, along with holiday gatherings, color my world
view. I was speaking with a friend recently who shared that her mother
was such a good cook that friends and relatives would come from near
and far to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. While my memory of
my mom’s cooking is quite fond, it seems to me something else was at
play: Intentional hospitality and a sense of purposeful invitation.
If you did not have a place to go for the holidays, there was always a
place for you at my parent’s table. The older I get their behavior comes
to me as a biblical message: Taking in strangers and welcoming others.
Part of the question we need to ask as we move toward the holidays is,
are we inviting and especially, are we hospitable? Think of it? The love
of God is Jesus invites us all. One poet refers to Jesus as the hound of
heaven seeking out the least and the lost and the lonely. Our story as
people of faith is rooted in the relationship between invitation and
hospitality
Your Friend and Pastor,
Joey

blessed with the sacrament of communion. The message was based on Luke 14:25--33 and titled, “Focus
and Loyalty.”
September 11 - Today was Patriot Day and the 15th Anniversary of 9/11. Everyone who attended

gift of their voices after a summer hiatus. Patty Kelsey led a Moment with Children about the good news
that Jesus will always seek us out. Lynn Yoshizumi shared a mission moment about the North Hollywood

enjoyed the Welcome To Church BBQ arranged by the Methodist Men following worship.
September 18 - Many thanks to Bill Varney who sat in the lectern. Scripture focus for today was from
the Book of Luke, Chapter 16, verses 1-13. Pastor Joey’s sermon was titled, “What Belongs To God.”

His wife Cindy will not be with him as she has already returned to Thailand. In October 2010 Gary and
Cindy opened Angel’s Haven, a facility for children with HIV/AIDS in Chiang Mai, located about 420
miles north of Bangkok. They wanted to provide a safe environment and personal care for young girls who
have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS and also have HIV/AIDS. It is among the first social ministries of the
church in Thailand, where United Methodist mission work is a fairly recent addition to the Southeast Asia
Mission Initiative.
Gary and Cindy are from Southern California and are members of Covenant United Methodist Church, a
Korean -American congregation in Pomona. They spent seven years in preparation for mission service after
experiencing a call during a training program offered in Los Angeles by a Korea-based organization. Gary
says that he encountered Jesus personally and experienced the Holy Spirit on a retreat in 1998. He was a
chiropractor by profession before entering full-time mission work. The Moons are the parents of 3 grown
children: Hanah, Michael, and Sarah.

MEET THE MISSIONARIES
All members of the congregation are invited to attend the
luncheon and meeting on Wednesday, October 12th, at
noon in the Community Room at which Gary Moon, one of
our missionaries to Thailand, will present a program about
his work in Thailand.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS - KIDS FOR JOY FUNDRAISER

• Helping to bring about some form of relief and stability to underprivileged children in Liberia, West
Africa
• Helping to ease the process of acquiring education
• Providing resources that would create a fun, interactive, creative and safe environment
• Helping the kids feel like kids again

Francis is planning to visit Liberia in December. At that time he plans to visit the Carolyn A. Miller School
and deliver the funds that he has raised and present the school with some much needed supplies. The
school provides free education to over 500 children in Liberia.
Join us in the Social Hall on Saturday, November 5th at 2:00 PM, for a
wonderful event! Francis Nyaforh, a.k.a. Jaway, will bring together musical
acts to entertain and raise funds and awareness for his non-profit
foundation, KIDS FOR JOY!
Please make sure this event and date are on your calendar. Tickets are not
necessary. A free-will offering will be taken and checks made payable to
Kids for Joy will be gladly accepted. The goals of the foundation are:
1,610,355 Care Packages have been sent to date, as Operation Gratitude is on the March to the 2nd Million.
Anita McChesney has volunteered several times this year.

Members of our congregation will be going to the Assembly Day on Saturday, November 19, from 9 am
until noon at the new location at 21100 Lassen Street in Chatsworth, just west of DeSoto. There will also be
Assembly Days on Sat, Oct. 15, and Wed, Oct. 26, 9 am - 12 noon on both days. If you are interested in
volunteering at any time, you should sign-in on line at www.operationgratitude.com/volunteer. All
volunteers must fill out a RELEASE FORM for each Assembly Day and sign in at the Volunteer Tables in
the parking lot.
There are seated and standing jobs on all Assembly Days. All weekend Assembly Days include both “Prep”
and “Assembly” work. “Prep” work consists of sorting donated items, folding shirts, screening letters, quality
controlling Battalion Buddies, prepping Medallions, and preparing products and the Assembly Line for the
Assembly Days. “Assembly” work includes production of the care packages, labeling, taping, letter reading
and writing, running packages, re-stocking the lines, breaking down cartons and many other tasks. If time
allows, you will be provided instruction and materials for making Paracord ‘Survival’ Bracelets and Battalion
Buddies on-site.
An important element in each Care Package are the letters of appreciation from those of us at home.
Operation Gratitude likes to include at least 5 letters per care package, so they need hundreds of thousands
of them for the Deployed Troops, New Recruits, Veterans, and Wounded Heroes. When we go as a group,
we always take letters written by members of our congregation. Note paper is provided and we ask that you
write letters during Coffee Fellowship or take home several pieces of note paper and return the written notes
the following week. Place them in the box labeled Operation Gratitude in the Lounge. No envelopes are
necessary.
It is suggested that you start with “Dear Hero”, “Dear Patriot”, “Dear Brave One”, “Dear Service
Member”, “Dear Warrior”, “Dear Veteran”, or create a greeting of your own, but please do not use “Dear
Soldier” or “Dear Marine” or “Dear Sailor” as those terms refer to membership in specific military
branches, and it can‘t be guaranteed that those letters will be placed in packages going to that service.
Two paragraphs or more would be nice. One or more paragraphs that express thanks for their service,
dedication, sacrifice, hard work, and/or time away from home. And one or more paragraphs about yourself,
your work, interesting stories, sports, music, movies, etc. Please avoid politics or controversial topics in your
letter. Every letter or card that is submitted is screened prior to being placed in a Care Package.
They also like to have newspaper comics and cartoons as well as Sudoko, Numbrix, etc., crossword puzzles
and other word games.  Each Sunday try to remember to bring in the previous Sunday's comics. These can
go in the Operation Gratitude box in the Lounge, too.
If you have any questions about Operation Gratitude, Assembly Day, or letter writing, please see Lynn
Yoshizumi, 818-764-8803 or ryly63@att.net.

Reflections
Dr. Joey K. McDonald
When I was in graduate school it may surprise you to know, I was required to take courses on
writing and delivering sermons.  My favorite professor, Dr. K. Morgan Edwards, was just as
serious as his name suggests.  He was very tall and very tough.  However, he had one axiom
which he repeated several times a semester.   “Grace must be the dominant note in every
sermon.”
In each class we had what was called peer evaluation.  We would preach before our professor
and colleagues, then be told the strengths and weaknesses of our presentation.  It was a one
page evaluation the approximate area of a flat king size bed sheet.  This lovely document
contained every type of critique, from the way one was dressed, where I felt fairly confident,
to the making of eye contact, not so greatly assured there.  The one section which I loathed
was called prophetic preaching.  I had two colleagues whom I shall call John and Ben because
they are so named. These fine brothers in the cloth each time I would preach would
seemingly take knives to filet me for my so called lack of prophetic.  I always felt cut up and
perhaps a bit put down by the process, but I learned something valuable.  Namely that I am
not a prophet.  I am a pastor and even in a difficult text I am drawn to the word of grace even
if it is down to a phrase or even a single word.  Jeremiah 4: 11-12, 22-28 is such a text.
Here the prophet delivers an oracle from God.  This is one of those so called scorched earth
policy speeches where the words are so direct as to hurt.   The people are told that their
unfaithfulness has caused God to turn from them.  So harsh will be their judgment that even
the birds will leave the place they inhabit.  Yet there in verse twenty-seven is a place to hang
my hat.  “But I will not make a full end.” Verse twenty-eight makes plain this is not a reprieve
but more a glimmer of hope.  “I have purposed; I have not relented nor will I turn back.”
Even in hard edged prophesy there is a grace present.  The work of a prophet is to remind us
that as people of faith we are accountable to our God.  Ah, but grace is just one word away.
Reflections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from September 12, 2010.
Dr. McDonald’s message was based on Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28 and the sermon title was “Prophetic Purpose.”

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@pacbell.net OCTOBER 2016 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.com IN THIS ISSUE: • North District CC • Strive To Tithe • Meet The Missionaries • First Impressions Team • Food Pantry Needs A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOEY We have this enormous ability as humans to block out the negative and remember the positive which is born out in the adage, ‘memories make life sweet.’ We are now entering the Fall Season. What are your memories of Fall? I am aware that those who grew up in other environs are apt to say California doesn’t have seasons, yet please indulge for a moment. I grew up in central Orange County when truck farms and citrus groves where virtually everywhere. As the weather began to get cooler, two things happened. You could smell the orange blossoms as the fruit began to ripen, and some nights, the fog around my neighborhood was so dense that driving was quite dangerous. My childhood home was a couple of long blocks from the main entrance to Disneyland so as you might imagine the orange trees and farms are long gone. If the lack of fog is a result of global warming or a simple result of the lack of crops and orchards, this is for someone with a keener mind with regard to the scientific world. These, along with holiday gatherings, color my world view. I was speaking with a friend recently who shared that her mother was such a good cook that friends and relatives would come from near and far to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. While my memory of my mom’s cooking is quite fond, it seems to me something else was at play: Intentional hospitality and a sense of purposeful invitation. If you did not have a place to go for the holidays, there was always a place for you at my parent’s table. The older I get their behavior comes to me as a biblical message: Taking in strangers and welcoming others. Part of the question we need to ask as we move toward the holidays is, are we inviting and especially, are we hospitable? Think of it? The love of God is Jesus invites us all. One poet refers to Jesus as the hound of heaven seeking out the least and the lost and the lonely. Our story as people of faith is rooted in the relationship between invitation and hospitality Your Friend and Pastor, Joey GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Grant Higiya Bishop Rev. • 7. His wife Cindy will not be with him as she has already returned to Thailand. In October 2010 Gary and Cindy opened Angel’s Haven, a facility for children with HIV/AIDS in Chiang Mai, located about 420 miles north of Bangkok. They wanted to provide a safe environment and personal care for young girls who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS and also have HIV/AIDS. It is among the first social ministries of the church in Thailand, where United Methodist mission work is a fairly recent addition to the Southeast Asia Mission Initiative. Gary and Cindy are from Southern California and are members of Covenant United Methodist Church, a Korean -American congregation in Pomona. They spent seven years in preparation for mission service after experiencing a call during a training program offered in Los Angeles by a Korea-based organization. Gary says that he encountered Jesus personally and experienced the Holy Spirit on a retreat in 1998. He was a chiropractor by profession before entering full-time mission work. The Moons are the parents of 3 grown children: Hanah, Michael, and Sarah. By Lynn Yoshizumi MEET THE MISSIONARIES All members of the congregation are invited to attend the luncheon and meeting on Wednesday, October 12th, at noon in the Community Room at which Gary Moon, one of our missionaries to Thailand, will present a program about his work in Thailand. All weekend Assembly Days include both “Prep” and “Assembly” work. “Prep” work consists of sorting donated items, folding shirts, screening letters, quality controlling Battalion Buddies, prepping Medallions, and preparing products and the Assembly Line for the Assembly Days. “Assembly” work includes production of the care packages, labeling, taping, letter reading and writing, running packages, re-stocking the lines, breaking down cartons and many other tasks. If time allows, you will be provided instruction and materials for making Paracord ‘Survival’ Bracelets and Battalion Buddies on-site. An important element in each Care Package are the letters of appreciation from those of us at home. Operation Gratitude likes to include at least 5 letters per care package, so they need hundreds of thousands of them for the Deployed Troops, New Recruits, Veterans, and Wounded Heroes. When we go as a group, we always take letters written by members of our congregation. Note paper is provided and we ask that you write letters during Coffee Fellowship or take home several pieces of note paper and return the written notes the following week. Place them in the box labeled Operation Gratitude in the Lounge. No envelopes are necessary. It is suggested that you start with “Dear Hero”, “Dear Patriot”, “Dear Brave One”, “Dear Service Member”, “Dear Warrior”, “Dear Veteran”, or create a greeting of your own, but please do not use “Dear Soldier” or “Dear Marine” or “Dear Sailor” as those terms refer to membership in specific military branches, and it can‘t be guaranteed that those letters will be placed in packages going to that service. Two paragraphs or more would be nice. One or more paragraphs that express thanks for their service, dedication, sacrifice, hard work, and/or time away from home. And one or more paragraphs about yourself, your work, interesting stories, sports, music, movies, etc. Please avoid politics or controversial topics in your letter. Every letter or card that is submitted is screened prior to being placed in a Care Package. They also like to have newspaper comics and cartoons as well as Sudoko, Numbrix, etc., crossword puzzles and other word games.  Each Sunday try to remember to bring in the previous Sunday's comics. These can go in the Operation Gratitude box in the Lounge, too. If you have any questions about Operation Gratitude, Assembly Day, or letter writing, please see Lynn Yoshizumi, 818-764-8803 or ryly63@att.net.

  • 10. Reflections Dr. Joey K. McDonald When I was in graduate school it may surprise you to know, I was required to take courses on writing and delivering sermons.  My favorite professor, Dr. K. Morgan Edwards, was just as serious as his name suggests.  He was very tall and very tough.  However, he had one axiom which he repeated several times a semester.   “Grace must be the dominant note in every sermon.” In each class we had what was called peer evaluation.  We would preach before our professor and colleagues, then be told the strengths and weaknesses of our presentation.  It was a one page evaluation the approximate area of a flat king size bed sheet.  This lovely document contained every type of critique, from the way one was dressed, where I felt fairly confident, to the making of eye contact, not so greatly assured there.  The one section which I loathed was called prophetic preaching.  I had two colleagues whom I shall call John and Ben because they are so named. These fine brothers in the cloth each time I would preach would seemingly take knives to filet me for my so called lack of prophetic.  I always felt cut up and perhaps a bit put down by the process, but I learned something valuable.  Namely that I am not a prophet.  I am a pastor and even in a difficult text I am drawn to the word of grace even if it is down to a phrase or even a single word.  Jeremiah 4: 11-12, 22-28 is such a text. Here the prophet delivers an oracle from God.  This is one of those so called scorched earth policy speeches where the words are so direct as to hurt.   The people are told that their unfaithfulness has caused God to turn from them.  So harsh will be their judgment that even the birds will leave the place they inhabit.  Yet there in verse twenty-seven is a place to hang my hat.  “But I will not make a full end.” Verse twenty-eight makes plain this is not a reprieve but more a glimmer of hope.  “I have purposed; I have not relented nor will I turn back.”  Even in hard edged prophesy there is a grace present.  The work of a prophet is to remind us that as people of faith we are accountable to our God.
