The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) was a significant study conducted between 1983 and 1993 comparing standard and intensive blood glucose control in diabetes patients. Results indicated that intensive treatment reduced the risk of diabetic retinopathy, kidney disease, and nerve damage, while also showing a transient worsening of retinopathy in the first year. Intensive therapy is recommended for type 1 diabetes (IDDM) patients to better manage blood glucose levels and prevent complications.
