  1. This is an introduction to the Agilent DC Power Analyzer, Modular, 600W and Four Slots: N6705A
  2. Welcome to the training module on the DC power analyzer from Agilent Technologies. This training module introduces the key specifications, features and advantages of using this instrument over others.
  3. The Agilent N6705A DC power analyzer is a modular system that is tailorable to meet specific test needs. At the heart of the DC power analyzer is the DC power module. The Agilent N6705A DC power analyzer is a mainframe that has four slots to accept one to four DC power modules. Each DC power module takes one slot, except for the N6754A 300 W high-performance auto-ranging DC power module, which occupies two slots. This modular design gives you the flexibility to mix and match from 21 different DC power modules to create a solution optimized to meet specific test requirements.
  4. The N6705A DC power analyzer provides unrivalled productivity gains for sourcing and measuring DC voltage and current into the DUT by integrating up to four advanced power supplies with DMM, scope, arb, and datalogger features. The N6705A eliminates the need to gather multiple pieces of equipment and create complex test setups including transducers (such as current probes and shunts) to measure current into your DUT. The N6705A is a four slot mainframe that accepts one to four of the modules below in any combination. Modules are ordered separately. Maximum output power is 600W. The DC power analyzer is designed for bench testing in R&D. It is a highly integrated instrument that combines up to four advanced DC power supplies, DMM, oscilloscope, arbitrary waveform generator and datalogger. It provides an easy-to-use interface, with all sourcing and measuring functions available from the front panel.
  5. This page gives a glance at the front panel of N6705A. It has an LCD display which shows all instrument functions - information changes based on selected function, display control knobs which control the scope and data logging views. Vertical knobs control the vertical size and position. Press Offset to set marker 1. Horizontal knobs control the horizontal size and position. Press Offset to set marker 2. The Trigger knob moves the trigger level up or down. Press this knob to auto scale. It has four power supply outputs, and a USB memory stick interface.
  6. This device improves the productivity of engineers o n a tight schedule to work through DUT testing and diagnosis of problems. It removes the risk of blowing-up scarce, complex, expensive DUTs. It h elps to be more productive, is easy to use, intuitive and reduces complexity that can lead to setup mistakes and DUT damage. Complicated information is presented in a clear way enabling the user to quickly get to the answers which are needed.
  7. There are three primary sourcing functions, and three primary measurement functions. Sourcing functions can: Provide simple DC bias for powering up DC input devices and circuit boards Create arbitrary waveform generator-like functions with high current capability for tests such as noise and immunity Can turn on or off the power supply outputs in a user-defined sequence to avoid damaging sensitive devices Determine margin of a sequenced input power design. Measurement functions can: Make DC voltage, current, and power measurements, useful for characterizing input current or as part of a DC power efficiency measurement Make dynamic scope-like waveform measurements, also useful for characterizing devices drawing dynamic input current Log voltage and current data over short or long periods of time to uncover potential anomalies with a particular design
  8. Each DC power module can be individually set to turn on or turn off with a delay. By adjusting the delay times and then commanding the Agilent N6705A to turn on, one can set the Agilent N6705A modules to sequence on in a particular order. The same sequencing capability is available to shut down the modules in a particular order. Delay times can be set from no delay to one second of delay in one millisecond increments.
  9. This page shows some of the built-in sourcing capabilities of the N6705A DC power analyzer. In addition to the turn-on waveforms shown, turn-off waveforms can also be defined. All of the waveforms shown here are standard waveforms that are built into the DC power analyzer, and all can be configured from the front panel without any programming. Also depicted here is the ability to define a completely arbitrary user-defined waveform. Multiple power supply outputs can be turned on (or off) in a precisely controlled user-defined sequence. Again, all of these abilities are accessible from the front panel with no need for programming.
  10. A digital control port, consisting of seven I/O pins, is provided to access various control functions. Each pin is user-configurable, bi-directional digital I/O, digital input only, external trigger, fault output, inhibit input, output couple controls can be configured as control port. In addition to the configurable pin functions, the active signal polarity for each pin is also configurable. When positive polarity is selected, a logical true signal is a voltage high at the pin. When negative polarity is selected, a logical true signal is a voltage low at the pin.
  11. The power management features of the Agilent N6705A allow you to allocate mainframe power to the outputs where it’s needed, achieving maximum asset utilization and flexibility. The Agilent N6705A DC power analyzer is a mainframe that has four slots to accept one to four DC power modules. Each DC power module takes one slot, except for the N6754A 300W high-performance auto-ranging DC power module, which occupies two slots. This modular design gives you the flexibility to mix and match from 21 different DC power modules to create a solution optimized to meet specific test requirements.
  12. Each power module has a fully integrated voltmeter and ammeter to measure the actual voltage and current being sourced from the output to the device under test. The accuracy of the voltage and current measurements is based on the type of modules that are installed. For better measurement accuracy and to reduce measurement noise on low current and voltage measurements, the number of power line cycles (NPLC) should be specified.
  13. The ‘Datalogger’ is similar to the ‘Scope’ view function, except that it lets you view and log output voltage and current data for up to 99,999 hours. You can configure the ‘Datalogger’ view to display voltage or current waveforms for all outputs. Power waveforms can be displayed for all outputs because of the interleaved datalogging capability. Once the datalogger has been triggered, do not change the display to ‘Scope’ view or ‘Meter’ view, otherwise datalogger will stop.
  14. The DC power analyzer’s scope function is similar to a bench oscilloscope, displaying output voltage and current signals as a function of time. It has controls that select which outputs and functions to display, front panel knobs that adjust gain and offset, and configurable triggers and markers. Power waveforms can only be displayed on Agilent N676xA power modules, as these have simultaneous voltage and current measurement capability.
  15. Each output on the DC power analyzer can be modulated by the power module’s built-in arbitrary waveform generator function. This allows the output to act as a DC bias transient generator or an arbitrary waveform generator. The maximum bandwidth is based on the type of module that is installed. The arbitrary waveform generator has a variable dwell period, where each point in the waveform is defined by the voltage or current setting along with the dwell time or duration to stay at that setting. Waveforms can be generated by specifying only a small number of points.
  16. This page outlines the miscellaneous features of N6705 instrument. It can control NPLC on metering, fan speed can be controlled to lower acoustic noise, o utput on / off sequence delays extended to 1000 seconds. It has a built-in web server that lets you control it directly from an internet browser on your computer.
  17. As a measurement system, the Agilent N6705A displays the average output voltage and current on a four or five digit ‘Meter’ view. Waveforms can be displayed using the ‘Scope’ view, which you can adjust using vertical and horizontal controls. The ‘Datalogger’ view measures and charts average and peak voltage and current measurements over an extended time period. As a multiple-output DC source, the Agilent N6705A provides up to four configurable outputs. Available power modules have power levels of 50W, 100W, and 300W, various voltage and current combinations, and provide a variety of performance features as described under “Power Module Capabilities”.
