In other words, it refers to the subordination of class, caste, gender, race, language and culture. It also indicates to those groups in society who are subject to the domination of the ruling classes. In general, subaltern classes include peasants, workers and other groups who have been denied access to âhegemonicâ power.

Operation âBlue Starâ is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Paper name: Cultural Study
Presentation Topic: Cultural studies and subaltern

Department of English

2. Introduction
ï± Gayatri Chakravorty spivak is an
Indian scholar, literary theorist and
feminist critic.
ï± She is university professor at
Columbia university.
ï± She is best known for her essay
âCan the subaltern speak?â
ï± Spivak was awarded by the âKyoto
prize in Arts and philosophyâ and in
2013 she also received the âpadma
bhushanâ award.
3. What is cultural studies?
ï Cultural studies is an interdisciplinary field of studies,
which means that it draws from many different subject
areas including sociology, anthropology, political science
and history.
ï Cultural studies is in fact the study of the way in which
culture is constructed and organized and the ways in
which it evolves and changes over time.
4. What is subaltern?
ï A subaltern is someone with a low ranking in a social,
political or other hierarchy. It can also mean someone
who has been marginalized or oppressed.
ï The subaltern is a technical term
for a certain kind of dispossessed
person.
âą It is person who fits within the
model of the oppressed as the
being so marginalized as to not
even have the âvoiceâ of the oppress.
5. Gayatri spivak and The Subaltern
ï The term spivak borrows from the Italian Marxist
Antonio Gramsci to signify the oppressed class.
ï Spivakâs well-known argument is that the subaltern
cannot speak for himself because the very structure of
colonial power prevents the speaking.
ï For the colonized woman speaking is even more
impossible because both colonialism and patriarchy
ensure that she keeps quiet.
8. Can subaltern speak?
âą It relates to the manner in which western
cultures investigate other cultures.
ï Spivak uses the example of the âIndian
sati practice of window suicideâ.
ï the main significance of this essay is in
its first part which presents the ethical
problems of investigating a different
culture base on âUniversalâ concepts and
frameworks.
9. ContinueâŠ..
âą In the second part of essay she criticizing the intellectual
westâs desire of subjectivityâ.
ï Spivak points to the fact that the west is talking to itself, and
in its own language about the other.
ï She hardly impressed with western effects to speak for the
other or try to âpresent his own voiceâ.
10. Cultural study and Subaltern
ï Spivak defines culture as âa package of largely unacknowledged
assumptions, loosely held by a loosely outlined group of people
mapping negotiation between the sacred and the profane, and the
relationship between the sexesâ.
ï Cultural studies scholar is able to perceive the complexities of
culture in two ways:
(1) In the grip that exists between academic discourse and
culture as practice.
(2) In the culture of the metro pole which he inhabits an insider.
