This document discusses Cultural Studies and its four main goals. Cultural Studies is an interdisciplinary field that investigates how culture shapes individual experiences and social relations. Its four goals are to be interdisciplinary, politically engaged, study both high and low or elite and popular culture, and examine the means of cultural production. It aims to combine academic disciplines, question inequalities in power structures, and analyze how culture is constructed for whole societies.

5. Interdisciplinary
 Cultural Studies transcend the confines of a particular
discipline such as literary criticism or history.
 Interdisciplinary it means that Branch of Study.
 Interdisciplinary involves the combining of two or more
academic discipline into one activity.
 It is about creating new by crossing boundaries and
thinking across them.


 Cultural Studies is not necessarily about literature
in the traditional sense or even about “Art”.
 Editors Lawrence Grossberg, Cary Nelson, and
Paula Treichler emphasize that the intellectual
promise of cultural Studies lies in its attempts to
“cut across diverse social and Political interests and
address many of the struggles within the current
scene”.

7. Cultural Studies is Politically Engaged
 Cultural critics see themselves as
‘oppositional’, not only within their own
disciplines but to many of the power
structures of society at large.
They question inequalities within power
structures and seek to discover models for
restructuring relationships among dominant
and minority.
 Individual Subjectivity is culturally
constructed.


the autonomy of the individual.

rebuttal of the traditional humanistic ‘Great man” or
“Great Book” theory.
 A relocation of aesthetics and Culture from the ideal
realms of taste and Sensibility into the arena of a whole
Society's everyday life as it is constructed.

