- WHAT do we want to protect and WHY?
- Just follow the regulations?
- Minimum requirements
- Prepare for future requirements
- Beyond legislation
- Are we willing to invest in environmental systems?
- Best Available Technology?
- Best Envinronmental Practice?
- Onboard routines & Training
- Put our trust in Port Reception Facilities?

> Many crew members experience problems with the OWS and bilge water system!
> ”Magic pipes” which by-passes the ship’s oily-water separator is still very much in use!
A ”Magic pipe” is a direct result of
Bilge water separator that doesn’t work
the way it is supposed to do.

Discharge of sewage into the sea is prohibited from ships constructed
on or after 1 January 2017, except when the ship has in operation an approved
sewage treatment plant certified by the Administration to meet the operational
requirements MARPOL Annex IV.

A Sewage Treatment Plant is approved based on
» Hydraulic load (litres per day)
» Organic load (kg of BOD5 per day)
A sewage treatment plant is NOT approved based on the number of persons.
NOTICE! A STP will deliver its certified performance in practice only if the system
is correctly sized to match the sewage load produced by the vessel!
Failure to correctly size against both principle parameters will result in
the STP failing to treat sewage in accordance with IMO requirements.
How to size a Sewage Treatment Plant - To consider;
- Type of toilet system (vacuum or gravity)
- Type of vessel and General layout
- Area of operations
- Time between call at ports
- POB

Report done for ‘The Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate’ in 2012.
Goal
Field information of treated sewage water quality related to various types of Sewage
Treatment Systems. Does the quality of sewage water after treatment meet the
requirements in the MARPOL Annex IV?

Number of
selected vessels

objects
Offshore Support vessels 5 5
General Cargo vessels 15 7
Tankers 10 10
Ferries 5 2
Container vessels 15 8
TOTAL 50 32
The test was ended becauese none of the 32 sewage water samples did meet
the standard as mentioned in MARPOL Annex IV!
Conditions
Take water samples on board of 50 different vessels.

Garbage Management Plan
Environmental awareness of crew with respect to minimising generation
of waste and separating of the waste is the key to success!
Raised as a tool onboard the vessel, in order to help the crew in
the daily work with different garbage issues.
Shall contain written procedures for
(1) Collecting
(2) Storing
(3) Processing
(4) Disposing
of garbage, including the use of equipment onboard.

3.
Discharge of introduced avian products in the Antarctic area is not permitted unless it has been treated to be made sterile.
4.
Discharge as far as practicable from areas of ice concentration exceeding 1/10 while the ship is en route.
5.
Distance from the ‘nearest land’, ‘nearest ice-shelf’, or ‘nearest fast ice’ while the ship is en route.
6.
Food wastes shall not be discharged onto the ice.
