Critical Thinking In Essay Writing
Crafting an essay on the intricacies of "Critical Thinking in Essay Writing" is a task that demands
a nuanced approach and a comprehensive understanding of both critical thinking and the art of
essay composition. The challenge lies not only in elucidating the importance of critical thinking
but also in seamlessly integrating it into the fabric of essay construction.
First and foremost, delving into the realm of critical thinking necessitates a thorough exploration
of various thinking processes, such as analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and inference.
Articulating these concepts coherently is demanding, as it requires not only a deep
comprehension of the subject matter but also the ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and
concise manner.
Furthermore, the challenge intensifies when attempting to illustrate the practical application of
critical thinking within the context of essay writing. One must navigate through the intricate
dance of formulating a thesis, providing evidence, and constructing a logical argument. The task
becomes a delicate balance between showcasing one's own critical thinking skills and guiding the
reader through a thought-provoking journey.
The writing process itself demands a fusion of creativity and analytical prowess. Integrating
critical thinking seamlessly into the essay requires a finesse that comes with practice and
experience. Developing a persuasive and coherent narrative, while consistently demonstrating
critical thinking, poses a formidable challenge to even the most adept writers.
In conclusion, undertaking an essay on "Critical Thinking in Essay Writing" is a formidable task
that demands a multifaceted skill set. It involves navigating the intricate web of critical thinking
processes, seamlessly incorporating them into the essay structure, and presenting a compelling
argument. The difficulty lies not only in the complexity of the topic but also in the art of
eloquently conveying these ideas. Aspiring essayists should approach this task with a blend of
intellectual rigor and creative finesse to produce a piece that truly exemplifies the symbiotic
relationship between critical thinking and effective essay writing.

Conch Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis
For the boys in the novel the conch was an empowering movement that made them
be civilized for a while. The conch showed leadership to the boys, for example
Golding states Him with the shell. Ralph! Ralph! Ralph! Let him be chief with the
trumpet (Golding 22). This quote is showing the boys saw the shell as an entitling
necessity. So far, the boys maintain civilized and try to create rules for themselves
as Ralph leads them. As the story progresses, Jack starts to separate from
civilization the boys are starting to forget about their main purpose for creating the
fire which is to be rescued. Jack and almost all the boys forget about being rescued
they then start to follow Jack as leader and stop listening to Ralph, who is more

U.S. Foreign Policy Toward Taiwan Essay
Introduction The American foreign policy affects everyone in some type of way,
shape or form. After all, all actions and decisions made by our nation have both
positive and negative consequences on its citizens. A controversial issue or nation so
to speak that the United States has been dealing with and is currently dealing with
today is Taiwan. Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, faces several elements
implicated by the U.S. foreign policy. The first element of American foreign policy is
that the United Statesonly recognizes one China. Whether it s the China to the left of
the Strait or the Taiwan to the right, it is up to both sides. The second element of
American foreign policy is that Washington encourages dialogue between... Show

The Shanghai CommuniquГ©
The Shanghai CommuniquГ© was signed on the 27th of February in 1972 between
our country and the Chinese. The communiquГ© was drafted by Henry Kissinger the
National Security Adviser at the time and Chou En lai the Chinese Prime Minister.
Ultimately the communiquГ© pledged China and the United States to work towards
normalizing their relations, expanding people to people contacts and trade
opportunities. This is where Taiwan came into play. Neither side wanted to broach
the subject of Taiwan, but this tiny island was a massive block throughout the
negotiations. However, neither China nor the United States was going to let China
hinder the start of their developing new relationship.
The Normalization CommuniquГ© The Normalization CommuniquГ© was
announced by President Jimmy Carter and went into effect on January 1, 1979. Prior
to this announcement, Western nations had been selling military equipment to
Beijing permitted by President Jimmy Carter. However, President Carter vetoed a
proposal to see 50 F 4 fighter bombers to Taiwan. Taiwan took this as a slap to the
face and interpreted this action as a
Lance Armstrong and Overcoming Obstacles Essays
Pedaling strong through the Pyrenees Mountains at remarkable speed, Lance
Armstrong approached the tenth stage of the Tour de France. Beginning at an
elevation of thirty three feet above sea level, Armstrong was in sixteenth position
with five minutes and fifty four seconds separating him and the leader. For many this
would be an insurmountable amount of time to makeup, especially on a stage
containing such a grueling and exhausting climb, but Armstrong saw it as an
opportunity to put his great mountain climbing skills to work (Stein60). Pacing
himself through the majority of the stage, he remained well behind the leader. Then it
happened; he reached the horrendous Mount Hautacam, and began his eight mile
sprint through the rain and up... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most grueling climb in Stage 10, Mount Hautacam, was ranked hors de categorie,
meaning the ascent to the top is so steep it cannot be appointed a specific number
(Thomsen 42). It is the Tour s way of saying, You [sic] don t want to know (Murphy
38).
One by one, Lance picked away at his competitors, leaving them with nothing but
exhaustion. After a punishing climb of 4,954 feet over one hundred twenty seven
miles,
Armstrong finished Stage 10 with an overall first place. Creating a four minute and
fourteen second margin between him and the previous leader, Armstrong had gained a
total of more than ten minutes during the most grueling stage throughout the entire
Tour de France (Stein 60). He then raced through the remaining stages with great
momentum and victoriously broke across the finish line on July 23, 2000 for the
second consecutive time since his diagnosis of cancer (Sterling 2; Armstrong, Lance ).
This accomplishment would be remarkable for anyone, but for a cancer survivor to
attain such a feat is extraordinary. Lance Armstrong is indeed an extraordinary
human being. He has achieved tremendous heights not only in the highly
competitive world of cycling but also in common, everyday life. To many he is a
champion, to others a role model, but no matter how he s viewed, he is an inspiration
to everyone. After being diagnosed with cancer, Lance Armstrong fought back
courageously and showed the world what a true hero really is.

by scratching all the time and not being able to sit still. I also noticed he barely

children. For example, his son told him he made the allstars and that the game was

Electric Cars Disadvantages
f.Survey The survey section focuses on the anticipated benefits and drawbacks that
are associated with the use of the electric car technology.
i. Benefits anticipated for the development of electric cars
The developments of electric cars are associated with numerous benefits to the
different stakeholders who are involved in their operations. Among the benefits
include the environmental benefits where the use of electric cars has eliminated
emission of dangerous gases that are emitted by fuel based cars. The use of
electric cars also has numerous health benefits to the public as some of the gases
that are realized by fuel based cars are feared to be dangerous to the human health.
Wolf, Ingo et al, also explains that electric cars are economical in the long run as
the cost of electricity is low than the fuel and gas prices that changes with time
(269) . Due to the ease of optimizing electric cars in comparison to fuel cars, the cars
are also considered to be much safer to their users in comparison to fuel cars.
During accidents, some of the fuel based cars explode as the fuels are flammable. ii.
The review of different drawbacks anticipated for this DPC
Despite the numerous benefits that are associated with electric cars, there are some
drawbacks that have prevented the popular use of the cars in the current period.
Among the drawbacks is the high cost that is associated with buying an electric car.
According to Jager et al. most of the electric cars in the market are
Arrow Of God District 9 Comparison
Arrow of God written by Chinua Achebe is set in the 1920 s located in Nigeria. The
book focuses on the main character Ezeulu, the Igbo people s chief priest. Throughout
the text we see Ezeulu have conflicts with other tribes and with Christian
missionaries, get sent to prison for denying a position from the British, and Ezeulu
having difficulties within his own tribe and their yam harvest (Achebe). All the
events that happened in Arrow of Godlead to a much deeper meaning. If we take a
look at a look at the very complex film District 9produced by Peter Jackson, we see a
very different but similar story. This is a mockumentary type film that explores
the life of a MNU executive, an alien and his son, the Nigerian gang, and a
mercenary soldier employed by MNU (IMDb). In both stories, Arrow of God and
District 9, there are very blunt patterns of fiction, distinct archetypes, and prominent
philosophies used. The stories above are two different types of media, with similar
content. Both book and movie shows a tribe being pushed out of their home, in
almost the same way. In both stories we see patterns of fiction, which is when a
reader is introduced to a characterand some event or a challenge occurs. In Arrow of
God, Ezeulu is faced with a difficult decision towards the end of the story. We call
this The Choice. Ezeulu is faced with the decision to allow his tribe to participate in
the New Yam Feast, but instead tells them not to and famine strikes the
Ancient Egyptian Art And Art
Ancient Egyptian art is painting, sculpture, architecture and other arts constructed
by the civilization of ancient Egypt in the lower Nile River from 3000 BC. Ancient
Egyptian artist tried to idealize the universe, not as it actually existed, but more
enduring and lasting symbols. They tended to portray life and people as they
wished them to be and not how they actually are. The artist followed certain rules
or styles that made it unique and unmistakable. Most of the art was influenced by
religion, mainly the belief in life after death. Most statues were meant to glorify
and a physical representation of the Gods (including the Pharaoh) and Goddesses.
Male statues was made darker in color than female statues. Sculpture and paintings
were very precise and strictly followed. Human figures followed a specific pattern;
the heads were viewed from the side while the body was viewed from the front. The
artists used this style to preserve order and stability, and the current relationship
between the king, people, and gods. They also used this type of style to dedicate to
ensuring safety and happiness in the next life. The standard Egyptian tombs was a
rectangular brick or stone structure with sloping sides build over an underground
burial chamber. The Old Kingdom statues survived all those years because they
fulfilled an important function in Egyptian tombs as substitute abodes for ka (the
immortal human life force). Although the characteristics of Ancient Egyptian art has

Symbols Of The Caribbean Culture
There are multiple cultures around the world that influence a country s way of living.
A culture is the way in which certain groups behave, think, and what tangible objects
they bring value to. The Colombian culture is profoundly influenced by the Spanish
culture, but has many distinct factors that allow it to properly function. The first
component of culture is symbols. Symbols are anything with significance and value
shared by the people in a culture. A symbolmost countries value is their national
flag. The colors of the Colombian flag each symbolize a characteristic ideal for a
strong country. The yellow horizontal stripe is a reference to the wealth in gold
Colombiawithheld before the arrival of Spaniards. The blue depicts the oceans lining
the outer regions of the country. A second interpretation of the flag s blue color is
the country s loyalty and consciousness. Lastly, the red reflects the bravery
Colombians inherited during their victorious fight for independence as well as a
recognition for those who lost their lives (Colombia s National Symbols, 2017).
Another national symbolin Colombia is the Coat of Arms. The Coat of Arms is a
national symbol of their motto Libertad y Orden which translates to Liberty and
Order . The national bird, Andean condor, has an important meaning to the roots of
Colombians, dating back to the indigenous Andean culture. The Andean people used
the vulture as a symbol of health and power. Gestures as well are symbols that give
St. Clare s Role In Assisi
Clare was a very influential saint towards both men and woman in her time and
today. There were those who saw her light and marveled at it, admired her and
rejoiced. But only those who caught her fire could begin to understand (71). I think
that she was very influential because she broke the role she played in her familyfor
faith and a spiritual life, which may be seen as a small movement towards womans
rights, even though they were still heavily restricted on what women could do and
where they can go. By leaving her class behind to enter into a new spiritual world
and weaving linens for poor churches around Assisi, I believe St. Clare clearly
expresses her compassion for others, the church, and love for Lady Poverty.
Clare ignored her family role of being married off which she sidestepped the prospect
of marriage skillfully and repeatedly (26). By going against the customs of that time,
I believe that she started a small woman s movement; where she influenced alike
women of a higher class into following God and denying their conventional role of a
woman at that time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clare became ill, She would have herself propped up with pillows; then she would
spin and weave fine cloth for making alter linings (80). These linens would be given
to surrounding churches of Assisi and as many as fifty sets of alter linings were
constructed (80). Since the woman were not permitted to travel as much as the
Brothers were able to do, Clare had to find other ways to share her faith through
actions as well as words. Relating back how Clare would weave and construct
beautiful things for poor churches, my grandmother and I knit and crochet offerings
to those in need through the example of St. Clare. My grandmother forms soft, warm
blankets for an organization that houses domestically abused women and children.
However, I prefer to crochet winter hats and head bands that I donate to different
organizations that distribute them to men, women, and children in

Argumentative Essay On Japan Before Pearl Harbor
1942 was a very pivotal year the the United States during the War. Pearl Harbor has
been attacked a few months earlier on December 7, 1941, which launched the
official start of the U.S entering the war. The U.S was now faced with a war on
two fronts. Roosevelt was being pulled between attacking the Japanese in the West
or to aid his ally England in the East. Although Roosevelt promised Churchill to aid
them as soon as the U.S enters the war, Roosevelt decided to deal with matters in
the West first. He would execute Executive order 9066 (the relocation of Japanese
Americans into concentration camps). Shortly after this order was executed, the
coast of California was attacked a few days later. Roosevelt did send aid and help

Religious Minority Experience
Within the past couple of weeks, I had the opportunity to engage in a religious
minority event. I attended the Hillel Jewish Center here on Purdue s campus.
Hillel is the largest Jewish campus organization in the world, and I found it very
fascinating that I got to take part in this new learning experience. I am from a small
town where everyone knows everyone, and there is very little diversity in race or
ethnic groups. I was raised in a Christian family and I attended church every Sunday.
I have never been around such diversity until I came to Purdue. Through my
education classes, and the events that I have attended on campus my cultural
knowledge has grown so much since I first started attending Purdue. I had very little

I learned so much about one religion in one night, and it amazes me how similar, yet
so different it is from my own religion. I went from having very little knowledge of
the Jewish culture, to learning all about their special Shabbat traditions. For example,
I learned about the candle lighting, the Mourners Kaddish, and the Breaking of
Bread. I also learned that the Jewish book is called the Torah and that it is very
traditional and is only read from right to left. I also learned about rules in the Torah
such as food restrictions. Without actually attending this event, I don t think that I
would have ever sat down and tried to learn more about the Jewish culture. But
now that I have attended this event, I am so amazed at how much of the world that
I am missing out on. It almost inspires me to attend more cultural events, so I can
become even more culturally immersed. After looking back on this experience, I
have a few questions as to why certain things happened the way they did. Why was
it that when I first entered the synagogue that no one besides the priest was willing
to talk to me? Based off my churches beliefs and traditions everyone is always very
welcoming to the new guests, because we hope that they will have a good time and
will be more willing to come again. Is this due to their culture? Was it disrespectful
for me to not introduced myself and attempt to engage in more conversation s? It was

Norham Castle Sunrise , first painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1798 as
a young man of 23 years old. Having first visited the castle in 1797 Turner proceed
to paint Norham Castle various times through out his career. It can be seen through
this series the way in which his age impacted upon his perception of the scene, his

Indigenous LGBTQI Community
The lack of specialised care options available for Indigenous LGBTQI+ individuals
is substantial, and this lack of care has resulted in a severe mental health crisis
throughout the community. Suicide, self harm, depression and anxiety are central
effects of this mental health crisis, and impact deeply on the lives of those who suffer
from them.
1.1SUICIDE
It was evident throughout the compilation of research that suicide is the most
significant issue facing the Indigenous LGBTQI+ community in terms of
psychological wellbeing. Suicide both directly and indirectly affects members of this
community, whether this be through suicide attempts, suicidal ideations or the
suicide of a loved one. According to a comprehensive 2017 survey completed by
Dameyon Bonson, the 2016 recipient of the Dr. Yunupingu award for Human Rights,
84% of the Indigenous LGBTQI+ community in Australia have been touched by
suicide in some way. This was further supported by a 2011 report completed by the
National LGBTI Health Alliance, LGBTI People Mental Health and Suicide in
which it was reported that, in line with the high risk tendencies of the population as a
whole, Indigenous LGBTQI+ Australians are likely to be at a higher risk of suicide.

The History Of Algebra, How It Started, The Most Study...
This paper will show the history of algebra, how it started, and how it grew to be what
it is today. It will show that it started it developments from the basic arithmetic
operations that first were used to solve simple addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division and how it went incorporating more operations that permitted it to solve
problems that involve abstract concepts. It will show that the recorded history begins
mostly with the Egyptian papyrus, and how it went passing from one civilization.
Moreover; it will show how each civilization contributed with something that at the
end helped it to become what it is today, the most study mathematical subject around
the world.
1.Introductions
However; the recorded history begins with the Rhind Papyrus from Egypt and clay
tablets from Babylon, which describe the basic mathematical operations that include
an unknown variable, then it passed to India where written records in Sanskrit show
that the Indian were already describing verbally what seems to be the description of
unknown variables. Next the recorded history passed to the Greeks, where
Diophantus published the b books that describe the syncopated algebra which are
considered to be the basis of all algebra used and studied by European mathematician.
Moreover; it was in Europe where the recorded history of the algebra really was taken
to the next level. The lead was taken by Fibonacci with is book liber abaci, who

Vancouver Island Community Analysis
Earlier this week, I published a Guest Post from Anabel Marsh on Hidden
Histories. Her thoughtful, provocative post led to much reflection, including Who
does your town/city honour? It s a great question. Vancouver Island, where I
currently live, is home to influential and well known actors, artists, athletes,
journalists, musicians, philanthropists, politicians, scientists, Nobel Laureates,
writers and more. Many are honoured on our island in a variety of ways. One small
section of this island is home to a local hero who does not neatly fit into one
category. Phil St. Luke (aka Flying Phil ) may not be well known outside of his
surrounding area...but within his community he is much loved and celebrated. Phil

Unquestionably he has become the community s unofficial ambassador. He is well
known by generations of Oceanside residents for his daily rounds through the town s
streets, coffee shops and businesses where he warmly greets everyone whom he
meets. His big smile, his exuberance, his desire to do good and his volunteer work
with multiple community programs has been an inspiration to many. Phil s
relentlessly optimistic outlook is contagious. Common quotes about Phil include He

Zinc Deficiency Can Cause Damage to the Brain Essay
Introduction
During the past few hundred years, zinc has been known to be the vital mineral
and catalytic of a lot of proteins and a signalling messenger who is released by
neural activity. (choi koh, 1998) Since zinc has been discovered by raulin in 1869
to be needed as a grower of aspergillus niger which is type of fungus and one of the
most common species of the genus aspergillus, this fungus is common contaminant
of food and cause black mould on certain food. Beside the cause of contaminated
food, zinc has been admitted as important for human in modern times.(Prasad, 1984)

The distribution of zinc is widely and is typically associated with the protein fraction
and/or nucleic fraction food. Meat (beef, Pork), poultry, organ meats (beef, poultry),
fish and shellfish are rich sources of dietary zinc which also can be found in eggs,
dairy product with lesser amount (shown in table below). Whole grain cereal
especially bran and germ, nuts, seed also legumes have high zinc content, meanwhile
tubers, refined cereals, fruits and vegetable have less. Comparing zinc absorption
between animal source and plant origin on body animal source will have higher
bioavailability then plant origin it because of the fiber and phytates that can inhibit
the zinc uptake by intestine. (Recommended Nutrient Intakes for Malaysia, 2005)

Holden Caulfield Mental Illness
In the 1950 s, mental illness was still largely misunderstood by the public. Most
had misconceptions that people with a mental illness were violent and scary as
many equated mental illness with psychosis . Today, mental health has become
less taboo, and science has worked to deepen our understanding of it (Phelan 189).
Using this research, it is now possible to diagnose people more accurately than
sixty years ago. While it has long been debated how to diagnose the main character,
Holden Caulfield, from J.D. Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye, modern science may
help. In this novel, Holden tells the story of how he ended up in a mental institution.
Taking place over three days, he tells of his battle with isolation from peers, family,
and strangers. Evidence from this novel suggests that Holden has reactive attachment
disorder, or RAD. RAD is caused by a traumatic experience in childhood (Institute)
which in Holden s case was neglect. Holden says that his parents were occupied and
all before the had [him] (Salinger 3), and they sent him to many boarding schools.
His parents ignore the roles normally fulfilled by parents. When Holden mentions
family outings, his parents aren t involved. For example, his older brother took him
and his sister to see Hamlet (Salinger 130). In addition, they have a woman,
Charlene, cook for the kids while his parents go out and have fun (Salinger 196).
When his parents are home, Holden still does not have a stable home life. Like many

There is no point reforming the rules on auditors if the liability regime continues to
be as lax as it currently is. Discuss.
Auditors provide a key investigation function in the business world. The law in
relation to the liability of auditors changed significantly with the introduction of
Companies Act 2006. It is now possible for audit firms to limit their liability towards
clients through contractual agreements. The current auditing liability regime has
proven to be controversial. This essay will first present the relevant liability rules and
examine the underlying problems, then evaluating the significance of these rules with
regard to auditing reforming.

After then the decision of Caparo Industries plc v Dickman outlined the three fold
test: 1) There should be a relationship of proximity between the parties. 2) The
resulting damage is reasonably foreseeable. 3) The situation should be one in which
the court considers it fair, just and reasonable that the law should impose a duty of a
given scope.
This is not an easy test to meet. Firstly, a special relationship is required for the third
party to claim that the defendant auditor owed him a duty of care. In order to define
this concept, Lord Oliver outlined further conditions for the claimant to establish
sufficient proximity with the defendant party. Thus the relationship of proximity is
hard to specify which placed increasing difficulties on claimants. Secondly, once the
claimant has established that the auditor did have a duty of care towards him, he will
then need to show that this duty has been breached. It is even less likely that a breach
will be found if the auditor has complied with industry practice. Thirdly, the claimant
must establish a dominant causal link between the breach and the loss. The
likelihood, therefore, of a third party claimant succeeding in their action is actually

Improving The Homes Curb Appeal
This past summer I took on an extensive project of completely redoing the
landscaping in the front of my mother s house. This project originated by the
falling and removal of a three large trees due to a severe storm leaving a big gap in
the landscaping. We decided that the front flower beds need some revamping, thus
this project began. The process used to initiate the project was very informal. It
was a family project that had an end goal of improving the homes curb appeal. This
approach was successful for the outcome, since the project was more relaxed and
had flexible deadlines a formal approach was not necessary. If we didn t complete a
specific task than it was just bumped to the next weekend. This project was seen

My mother s house is located on what used to be a gravel pit and unfortunately for
us, this meant certain areas we tried to dig would be rock instead of nice soil. We
found out quickly that the areas that where rock/gravel instead of soil where
nearly impossible to dig using only man power. To overcome this issue we had to
redo designs and move plants to different areas and avoid digging where rock was
present. Also, to combat the rock issue we raised some flower beds by adding
retaining walls and top soil over the rocks. This allowed for an admit amount of
soil needed for plant growth. The final outcome of the project was a great success.
The front of the house now looks great and my mother is very pleased. There are a
variety of plants growing now, in areas that used to be empty or filled with wood
chips from the removal of tree stumps. Many of the neighbors have also
commented on how nice the yard looks, so the work has not gone unnoticed. The
project was managed mostly by myself and it was handled in a relaxed manner.
One recommendation for improving the system would be to incorporate more
helping hands. The project usually only included myself and one other person. On
occasion it included more people, but not often. If there was more people involved
in the project it would have be completed in more of a timely manner. The project
consisted of many different roles provided by my family members. The project

few handful of cars in the Indian market in the 1980s. Most of these were outdated

only car with the latest technology then was the Maruti 800. It became very popular
because of the low price, high fuel efficiency and good reliability. Since then the

What Is The Opinion Of As I Lay Dying
Differing Opinions of Truth Reveal that There is No Universal Goodness
As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner is famous for its use of modernism as one story
is told from a multitude of individual perspectives in a stream of consciousness
format. Faulkner s modernistic writing allows the reader to delve deep into the true
emotions of characters and gain a profound understanding of events and intentions.
The individual perspectives show the reader the true beliefs of people and the
communities that they fit into, which reveals fundamental differences in opinion
without saying who is truly good or bad. The community of the family believes what
they are doing is good because it is the best that they can and should do, while the
community of all outsiders expresses that the family s actions are actually wrong.
Additionally, the community of women in the novel generally express that there is no
excuse for the family s actions, while the community of men in the novel generally

their career. It can also be thought of as the album that gave a complete concept of
the Eagles. Each member of the band is contributing to the music and is playing a
mixture of instruments. With this range usage of the members, the album has a
complete cohesive feel. During this time of the Eagles career, they had five members;
Don Henley, Don Felder, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh and Randy Meisner

According to the band, Hotel California is a song about materialism in American. It

The Role Of Power Among Characters In Schindler s List
As successful as hitler was at exterminating almost the entire population of Jews,
Genghis Kahn was even more successful at exterminating large populations. He
killed millions of people himself, decimating 10% of the world s population, and
back when he was the emperor, there was no special technology such as gas
chambers or tanks or cars or guns, him and his army had to kill people on foot and
with swords/machetes. The distribution of power among characters in Schindler s list
varies, but ultimately those with the tanks and machine guns held the most power
and control. Although the Nazis held the most power over the Jews during the
Holocaust, there were other groups of people who used their trivial powers to save
themselves and others.

Metaphysics
The understanding itself, in regard to representations and objects, is the paramount
focus of Immanuel Kant s (1724 1804), Critique of Pure Reason (1781/1787).
Although there is a manifold of philosophical definitions of what the critique of pure
reason is defined as, this essay will assist in alleviating the flux that occurs when
comprehending the meaning of Kant s, Critique of Pure Reason. After reading most
of Kant s critique, in relation to Metaphysics, the critique of pure reason is a way of
making that branch of philosophy a true possibility, then an actual science. An

In order to fully comprehend what a court of justice is, the concept of indifferentism,
must be clearly defined. Kant states that indifferentism is, the mother of chaos and
night in the sciences, but at the same time, also the origin, or at least the prelude, of
their incipient transformations and enlightenment, when through ill applies effort
they have become obscure, confused, and useless (A x). Indifference is harming to
metaphysics because it allows people to ignore what they naturally compelled to
answer about representations, objects, and results. In summary, Kant s critique of
pure reason is a court of justice, which gives humanity the ability to determine and
separate the invalid flaws and falsities that are holding is an endless fate, from the
valid right rules and principles that help us answer metaphysical inquisitions. After
Kant defines the court of justice, he then introduces a new term that helps define a
critique of pure reason, a critique of the faculty of reason.
Kant offers another important definition in regard to a critique of pure reason in
which he uses the term a critique of the faculty of reason, which will be fully

Kant defines critique of the faculty of reason in general, in respect of all the

Compare And Contrast Breast Feeding Vs Bottle Feeding
When it comes to infants there are many different methods on properly raising a
baby. This is a very important part of the child s development. This sets the tone for
the rest of the child s life. Breast feeding vs. Bottle feeding is one of the most
controversial issues when it comes to parents deciding which will be best is for
the babies. In my opinion breast feeding is more superior when it to come to the
benefits the baby more according to many studies the mother body can adapt to the
changes of the baby. For example if the baby is sick the mother s body can produce
milk that caters to the baby s health. There are also cons that come along with breast
feeding like the child becoming too attached to the mother which is separation anxiety
19th Century Swimming
Swimming became a true sport in the 19th century when Great Britain began to
start holding competitions to see who could get from one side of the pool to the
other the fastest. The first type of stroke that they used was breaststroke because
that was the easiest way to swim at the time while still being able to breathe. As
time progressed the British started using a stroke called the forward crawl with a
scissor kick, however a man named Frederick Cavill in 1887 traveled to the South
Seas and saw people using the forward crawl but with a flutter kick which is now our
modern day freestyle. Swimmingfirst became featured in the Olympics in 1896 and
the only strokes that were raced were Freestyle and Breaststroke. Backstroke was

Due to the late arrival of the defendant, the defense barrister had to apologies on his
behalf, resulting in the judge sanctioning him custody during lunchtime. I was
surprise that see that judge did not say anything more, I am use to judges in
America to be very cross with any party that arrived to the trail late. I had once

But the judge only sanction him so I figure that this may happen more than once.
The defendant s tardiness, as well as his demeanor very nonchalant in court, made
him appear to be unconcerned with the fact that he was on trial. At one point I
thought he was going to fall asleep. This definitely had an impact on his impression
on the jurors as they did not seem happy with his behavior and neither was the judge.
Once the jurors had been sworn in, the prosecuting barrister began with her opening
statement. She reminded the jury of their role, which was to weight up the evidence
in order to decide on the facts of the case. In comparison, the role of the judge was
to interpret the law and direct the jury accordingly. Although there was reference to
statute when the defendant was read his charge, the remainder of the trial was less
concerned with the law and more focused on establishing the facts of the case. The
prosecution called 3 witnesses in total, all of which were police officers. Once they
arrived in the witness stand, they were asked to swear an oath.

It also allowed for the trickle down, explanation, and elaboration of orders from the
top. In contrast to the Mongolian military, the army of Song China formed not through
an all encompassing draft but, rather, through recruitment. Instead of requiring
military service, recruiting officers [would] go out in times of dearth, measuring the
height of the men, testing their strength, and enrolling them in the standing army.
Times of dearth means times of scarcity and famine. In other words, when times
became tough, army officials would go to the fields looking to recruit strong men
into the military. Since the military was comprised of a standing army, unlike
Mongolia s, being in the army was a permanent job. For the time they were in the
military, the men would not return to the fields. Perhaps this idea of a life away
from the hardships of working the fields was exploited during recruitment. Because of
this, it can be assumed that many wished to join the military. However, since the
recruitment officers examined the men s physical prowess, not everyone would be
able to join. As such, joining became competitive. Although it is questionable how
competitive it truly was because the army recruiters were rewarded based upon the
number of recruits the managed to gather. Also, rather than organize in units of ten,
Conscription and Professional Soldiers in Song China shows that China s army of
the time was instead organized into two separate

To the point were both is in need of protection which they can only resort to a gun,

Home Health Aides On The Lives Of People With
Disabilities
Home health aides play an integral role in the lives of people with disabilities.
Because home health aides are held responsible for their patient s overall well
being, it is crucial that they contain the necessary skill sets to perform their job
duties correctly. Given that the need for care of children, the elderly, the
chronically ill and the disabled has not diminished over the past couple of years,
the demand for home health aides has increased substantially over time. With the
rise in medical advances that help keep people with serious injuries or illnesses
alive and increased longevity, this demand is expected to increase dramatically.
However, an issue for concern is that in most cases, home care providers are not
licensed, and have no prior training requirements. Given that this occupation
requires a great deal of responsibility, it is indispensable that home health aides
have the knowledge necessary to administer the help required of them. According
to a summary report for home health aides on O Net Online, employees in these
occupations need anywhere from a few months to one year of working with
experienced employees. A recognized apprenticeship program may be associated
with these occupations as well (O Net Online). It is evident that the job of a home
health care aide is one that requires some type of training, considering that these
types of positions are tied to the care and well being of the patient who can no longer
care for themselves. However, an
Use Of Twitter For Marketing And Public Relations
The author Mike Volpe mentioned in his article How to Use Twitter for Marketing
PR some effective ideas about how to use Twitter for marketing and public
relations. Volpe claims that social media is a great way to be connected with your
market since you can mange connections with customers, bloggers and other
influencers, but engaging a CEO in social media is hard, especially if he or she is
in a large or global company, and this is where twitter become handy. Twitter is
about short thoughts and comments, and it is limited to 140 characters per tweet, so
if the CEO can send a text message, he or she can use twitter as a marketingand
public relations tool, and according to Volpe (2008), Twitter is actually perfect for
CEO or founder who is always on the road meeting with people and who has some
interesting opinions on your market. Volpe sees that Twitter will keep you in touch
with bloggers, and Twitter is an easy way to be connected with influential people in
the media without calling or emailing them. Also, Twitter can be used to monitor a
company or a brand, and Volpe mentioned an example of a website called Website
Grader that the Silicon Valley marketing executive Guy Kawasaki tweeted about and
got a good amount of traffic and leads.
Twitter is also beneficial for retailer and anyone who often has special offers,
because a large audience would hear their deals instantaneously, and for free since
they have to pay for some applications like Ding to get alerted

Dissection Of Easter Morning By Robert Frost
Dissection of Easter Morning The poem Easter Morning is a part of the poetry
produced by A.R. Ammons in 1981. A.R. Ammons was interested in the sciences
but also held a love for literature. He liked to involve nature in his work. Easter
Morning is very abstract, has tropes that further the images presented, and is not
confined to form. The perception of human ambiguities and abstract possibilities in
homely bits of nature may have originated in Robert Frost. (N.A. 288) His work like
most other authors of his time is influenced by others like Robert Frost and William
Carlos Williams. This poem is heavily influenced by Robert Frost. Frost likes to
create poetrythat helps you bring some meaning out of a situation presented in
nature. For close inspection, the form, sentence structures, and syntax are a
highlight of what he wants to convey to the reader. Easter Morning is in written
free verse and divided into verse paragraphs. (enotes.com) Along with the other
literary figures of his time that have an influence on his work, this poem is truly
free verse. It doesn t have any syllabic pattern, or run on sentences. The syntax is
very clear, coherent. It is almost childlike in its simplicity. This adds to the overall
feeling Ammons wants to convey to the reader. The sentence structure is very
precise. He leaves some words all alone that are to cause a break in the reading.
They also leave the reader thinking why he did that. ...all in the graveyard assembled,

The Pythagorean Theorem Was Discovered And First
Proven By...
Background:
The Pythagorean Theorem was discovered and first proven by the Greek
mathematician, Pythagoras. The Pythagorean Theorem states that the sum of the
squares of the two legs of a right triangle equals the square of the hypotenuse of the
triangle. In simpler words, when looking at the right triangle below, aВІ+bВІ=cВІ.
This major discovery in the history of mathematics lead to the accomplishments of
many other basic things we do in life. The Pythagorean Theorem does not just stop at
the famous equation of aВІ+bВІ=cВІ, but it has many other aspects. Whole numbers
that can fit into this theorem are commonly referred to as Pythagorean Triples. The
Pythagorean Theorem includes numerous amounts of poofs, from the basic proof to

Once the concept of the Pythagorean Triples was discovered, mathematicians were
eager to validate the concept. Euclid created a widely accepted formula in deriving a
Pythagorean Triple, which can be proved with the help of the unit circle and algebra.
Euclid s Formula and its Proof
Euclid s formula for a Pythagorean triple is: a = 2mn, b = m^2 n^2, c = m^2 + n^2
The variables: m and n: stand for positive, rational integers. It is important to
remember that m has to be greater than n, otherwise the statement valuing variable b
on a Pythagorean triangle would be false because b cannot
This can be understood in terms of the rational points on the unit circle. A unit circle
is a circle with the radius of 1.
We can draw a right triangle: a and b are the legs c is the hypotenuse
In the next part, we must use the trigonometric identity of sin2+cos2=1. For
representational purposes, we must look towards the following diagram for how the
triangle would be represented in this proof.
The next step in formulating this next equation would require us to find the sine and
cosine of triangleABC. The sine formula is opposite/hypotenuse, which would equate
to a/c. Additionally, the formula for cosine is adjacent/hypotenuse, equating to b/c.
Knowing the trigonometric identity, we can derive the new eqution:
For the next step, we will need to know the equation of a [unit] circle: x2 + y2 = 1
We know that
The Rise And Fall Of Tiamat
He crouched in a tight fetal position, huddled in a corner of the study. Lysander
shivered with dread, as he sensed a sudden change. Tiamat was dead. He could feel
it. Tiamat had been absent from Murk for nearly two years now. The empress left
with a plan to infiltrate the realm of Murk s most hated enemy: Atlantica. She would
seduce King Triton, seize the mighty Trident, and seek revenge for the many
injustices Murkens had faced at the hands of the Atlanticans. But what had happened?
Had Tiamat failed? Impossible. Empress Tiamat was the most powerful ruler Mruk
had ever seen. Even more powerful than his father Phorcys, she proved, when she
murdered him and usurped the throne. Lysander gasped; he was beginning to
hyperventilate. If Tiamat was
Advantages And Disadvantages Of Discrete Wavelet
Transform
Discrete Wavelet Transform DWT is a frequency based transform which is
performed on wavelets. It can be 1 D, 2 D and etc. It divides an image into four sub
bands, namely пѓ LL (Low resolution image) пѓ HL (Horizontal) пѓ LH (vertical)
пѓ HH (diagonal) This division can be performed up to many levels. It captures not
only notion of frequency content but also temporal content. Wavelets provide a
mathematical way of encoding information in such a way that it is layered according
to level of detail. DWT is more computationally efficient than other transformations
because of its excellent localization properties. Wavelets are capable of complete
lossless reconstruction of image[6]. Advantages of DWT 1.No need to divide the

Three levels of rotations have been implemented. First the original watermarked
image is being rotated by 90o , then 180o and at last the image is being rotated by
270o in clock wise direction. Gaussian noise On digital image Gaussian noise can
be reduced using a spatial filter, though when smoothing an image, an undesirable
outcome may result in the blurring of fine scaled image edges and details because
they also correspond to blocked high frequencies. Image compression Image
compression may be lossy or lossless. Lossless compression is preferred for
archival purposes and often for medical imaging, technical drawings, clip art, or
comics. Lossy compression methods, especially when used at low bit rates,
introduce compression artifacts. Lossy methods are especially suitable for natural
images such as photographs in applications. Salt and pepper Noise Salt and pepper
noise is an attack for which a certain amount of the pixels in the image are either
black or white (hence the name of the noise). Salt and pepper noise can be used to
model defects in the transmission of the image that a pixel is corrupted. Additive

A projector accomplishes this task by shining a light beam through an opening
controlled by a device called an iris diaphragm. An iris diaphragm is made of thin,
opaque plates, and turning a ring changes the diameter of the central opening. For
optical camouflage to work properly, this opening must be the size of a pinhole.
Why? This ensures a larger depth of field so that the screen (in this case the cloak)
can be located any distance from the projector.
The Combiner:
The system requires a special mirror to both reflect the projected image toward the
cloak and to let light rays bouncing off the cloak return to the user s eye. This
special mirror is called a beam splitter, or a combiner a half silvered mirror that both
reflects light (the silvered half) and transmits light (the transparent half). If properly
positioned in front of the user s eye, the combiner allows the user to perceive both
the image enhanced by the computer and light from the surrounding world. This is
critical because the computer generated image and the real world scene must be fully
integrated for the illusion of invisibility to seem realistic. The user has to look through
a peephole in this mirror to see the augmented reality.
INVISIBILITY CLOAK SYSTEM:
Now let s put all of these components together to see how the invisibility cloak
appears to make a person transparent. The diagram below shows the typical
The Differences Between The Developmental Policies
Donaldson examined a similar problem in Guizhou and Yunnan wherein even though
poverty reduction was one of the explicit goals of developmental programs in two of
China s most remote provinces, he found that the differences between the
developmental policies in Guizhou and Yunnan. Wherein one (Guizhou) saw fairly
modest economic growth but greatly reduced poverty, compared to Yunnan which
saw strong economic growth but stagnant rates of rural poverty i.e. economic
growth did not reduce poverty. This was accomplished, Donaldson argues, based on
individual official s experiences and leadership style. Guizhou focused on micro level
opportunities to increase farmers livelihoods by shifting rural labor (through out of
province migration) and increasing opportunities for farmers to increase their
incomes at home, in part by building modest roads linking villages to local markets
and promoting local, small scale industries, such as rural tourism and coal mining.
Donaldson s findings are evidence to the importance of evaluating and setting the
policy agenda with respect to all of the objectives outlined in food policy rather than
just focusing on a single aspect, in this case poverty reduction, can hamstring the
policy. Ignoring the interdependence of the objectives will ultimately cripple
developmental policy as the externalities of narrow minded policy create a negative
feedback loop and thus kicks the developmental can down the road rather than dealing
with the root of the
I Had A Good Day At Work Essay
I always had a positive outlook on everything when I was younger. In fact, up until
this year, I could still find the good in every negative situation. When I became
depressed, though, everything changed dramatically. I cant explain how confused
I was. Nothing had happened to make me feel the way I did; it really just came out
of nowhere. Being a person who looks to logic for explanation, I was not only
depressed and confused, but irritated. I kept thinking, This is not normal. Humans
are not supposed to feel like this . I had always had the power to change my
attitude about almost anything. If I wanted to like something, I would; if I wanted
to have a good day at work, I would. But for the first time in my life, I was totally
helpless. My power of mind had failed me. I was totally screwed. Suddenly, nothing
was good or fun, or even worth doing. My favorite things seemed boring, and
everything else seemed pointless. For some reason, every song that I would hear
would be sad to me...and not just kind of depressing, but completely tragic. Every
television show or movie seemed terrifying to me. My stomach would be filled
with adrenaline constantly for fear of what someone might say (knowing it would
be the saddest thing I d ever heard). Everything was so black, so endless, and so
impossible. I had become something I never wanted to be. I felt so distant from
myself and everyone else. I wasn t me anymore, and I think that made me even more
scared. Soon, my dreams became
How Does Jane Austen Use Letters In Pride And Prejudice

s Letters in Pride and Prejudice In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen s usage of
letters allows the reader to fully comprehend the situation and certain feelings of the
characters. For example, the two letters sent by Jane Bennet to Elizabeth Bennet in
Chapter 46 allow the novel to arrive at a turning point in many different aspects. The
obvious purpose of the written letters is to inform the reader of the events at hand
regarding Lydia Bennet and Mr. Wickham. However, these letters allow changes to

Wickham as well as Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. However the seriousness of the
situation in itself, the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet is
furthermore developed because of these two letters. Elizabeth turns to Mr. Darcy
as soon as he appears and immediately notifies him of everything. This action of
hers illustrates the budding closeness between the two and how she relies on
Darcy. Both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy blame themselves for not exposing Mr.
Wickham as the vagrant that he truly is. Therefore, this shared guilt provides the
nascent couple with a strong emotional connection and a universal principle. A
major factor of a couple s relationship is how they react in times of distress. Do they
turn to each other for support or withdraw from one another? Elizabeth s reliance on
Mr. Darcy is a foreshadowing of a wonderful relationship to come for the couple.
The two letters alone are a catalyst in exposing these emotions that might otherwise
be suppressed. The two letters will generally contribute to furthering the
development of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy s relationship. Perhaps the reasoning
behind Lydia s actions could be her family and their attitudes toward certain subjects
such as men, romance, and marriage. Mrs. Bennet is consistently pressuring her
daughters to become married women in order to ensure social status and financial
security for the remainder of their lives. It seems that her only goal in life is
Adapting For Graduate School Your Emotional

Adapting to Graduate School Your Emotional Intelligence Journal 1 In the article
from idealist.org it discusses the differences between being an undergraduate student
and graduate student. It starts from saying that you are older, you have the ability to
be autonomous and have less structure, the lifestyles are different, and that in
graduate schoolyou poses more of an ability to be structured and organized as you
have more experience. If there is one thing that I have determined just from the first
few weeks of having courses and being an MSW graduate student it is that graduate
school is totally different from undergraduate school, that s for sure! One of the
major adaptations that I saw in the website was the ideaof having... Show more

I am used to having the syllabus and starting with the planning in advance. I also
don t think that it helps that I just moved the weekend before class s started and I
have not fully unpacked, so my house is a complete mess. One way that I plan to
reconcile this mess , so to speak is by taking the holiday time off to organize and get
my mind set on the fact that this is graduate school, and that this is real! This is
happening weather I want it to or not. Once I get my mind on that set of tracks, I
believe that it will be easier for me to focus my attention on ways that I am able to
complete assignments before the last minute that they are due. I also think that
demonstrating some self awareness is going to be a key factor in gaining the ability
to focus my attention to school and try to balance school, home life, work and field
placement at the same time and not burn out. In the article about emotional
intelligence, one key concept that struck me is the idea of being aware of you. In
saying this, I mean the idea that you are able to know what you are feeling, what you
are thinking and know when you should or should not provide self care. I think that
another key factor from this article was when the author talked about relationship and
time management. In graduate school, you are expected to make those initial
connections, whether that be with your faculty, advisors, cohort peers or persons in
your field placement. This is one thing

Essay on Hospitality in The Hebrew Scriptures
To welcome the other, the friend or the stranger, is a fundamental aspect of human
society, friendship, love and life. It is the intersection of two lives, an event that can
fundamentally alter the paths of all those involved. This importance within the basic
functioning of human life makes the recognition of hospitality as a central theme of
the Hebrew Scriptures an unsurprising reality. With this in mind then, through this
essay we will examine the understanding of hospitality laid out in the canonical
scriptures of the Hebrew Bible. Through exploring the events of Abraham s meeting
guests in Genesis 18, the text of terror in Judges 19 in which hospitality is violated
and the story of the book of Ruth, we will elicit the role... Show more content on

These entwined moments of welcome add to the already high significance societies
place upon hospitality by alluding to a divine presence among those who meet,
reinforcing the importance of this practice for those who attempt to follow the
Hebrew Faith.
Perhaps on of the most important occurrences of the practice of hospitality in the
Hebrew Scriptures, and identified by some sources as paradigmatic , the encounter of
Abraham with three strangers in Genesis 18 reflects the divinely entwined hospitality
mentioned earlier. In this account, the patriarch Abraham is seen as offering the
idealized fulfillment of true hospitality through the overwhelming nature of his
actions and offerings. From the beginning of the story, we see Abraham go out of his
way to greet and welcome the guest, from the initial running to meet them before
bowing in their presence, through to the offer of bread and the reality of a far greater
feast, Abraham spares nothing in his encounter with the strangers. These actions take
on further meaning when referenced in light of the readers awareness that one of
these strangers is The Lord (Gen 18:1). Through the introduction of the divine
character, and this character s acceptance of Abraham s hospitality , a paradigm is
established in the story that is found throughout the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Because of the paradigmatic model of
Adam Corolla Usc Lecture Essay
Adam Carolla Lecture Paper
One of the basic tenets of life is that greater opportunities will appear to individuals
that actively pursue and know how to recognize them. Since the majority of us do
not have the luxury of being born into wealth or power, the choices that we make
ultimately shape our successes in life. Adam Carolla begins by using examples to
highlight the concepts of consistency and residual income. He explains that it is
easier and more useful to understand how to sell something and continue selling it
again and again as opposed to figuring out how to simply make a large amount of
money. As a student that had performed poorly in high school, he worked a variety
of jobs including carpet cleaner and boxing trainer ... Show more content on

Conversely, Adam Carolla cites an example of negative reinforcement being used
as a form of motivation. He refers to his time working as a carpet cleaner out of
high school and the pain he felt from working a horrible job with people he did not
like. Carolla explains that by being miserable at a bad job, he learned he did not
want to continue working at a career that he did not enjoy. Using pain as a
motivating factor, this realization forced Adam to forge a better career path for
himself. Another important aspect of creating opportunities revolves around the
concept of doing a job well regardless of whether you enjoy it or not. In reality, the
dream job is not typically the first job, the second job, or even the third. However,
this does not count as an excuse for not performing to the highest capacity at any
level of work. Adam expands, saying that it is crucial to get in the habit of doing
things well and not judge a job because you it feel it might be below you. Doing a
job properly and to the fullest ability demonstrates attention to the detail and is a
key indicator of overall job performance to employers. Experience and knowledge
are also key elements that an individual can use to take advantage of opportunities. In
order to obtain chance for advancement, it is imperative to commit the time to
understand all the aspects of a job and acquire the knowledge necessary for when the
opportunity does come. In
Dualism In Toni Morrison s A Mercy
A Mercy by Toni Morrison divulges about wilderness and its unstructured ruling in
society. It alludes again and again throughout the text that it is a bad thing because of
its heavily negative connotation to it when discussed by others, such as the
Blacksmith. Florence does not seem to understand it but she believes it s negative at
the beginning, however, after much character development her she accept the
wildernessto be a part of herself. Her wild natureis the result of uncivilized
upbringing, but it has protected her from the situations that were too much to bear,
such as the trauma with her mother and the Blacksmith.
The text starts off with her feet, it is the part in which she is grounded on. Her feet
represent her, and so when she hears, Only bad women wear high heels. I am
dangerous, she says, and wild. The word wild in this context infers that Florens is
uncivilized, different from the others. Her heels ward off a meaning of danger and
sensual. This is a foreshadowing of her conflict with the Blacksmith. As the text
progress she says, she relents and lets me wear the throwaway shoes from Senhora
s house, pointy toe, one raised heel broke, the other worn and a buckle on top. As a
result, Lina says, my feet are useless, will always be too tender for life and never
have the strong soles, tougher than leather, that life requires. (10) Lina s critical infers
that [main character] cannot function in civil society. This foreshadows means that

Marcel Duchamp ( 1887-1968 )
Marcel Duchamp (1887 1968) was a French artist, known for his contributions to the
Dada movement and for his influence on other artists that followed him. He was
born in Blainville sur Crevon, a small town in northern France where his father
served as a notary. His mother was artistically inclined and thus Duchamp became
interested in sketching and painting when he was a teenager. At the age of seventeen,
he moved to Paris to study art at the AcadГ©mie Julian. As a young artist, he was
influenced by Cubismand Futurism, the two new art movements that were
developing at the time. The Cubist artists reduced objects (or people) to basic shapes
and tried to show different sides of images at once. The Futurists wanted to find ways
to depict... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In some cases he also created art by altering posters found on the street or prints of
works by other artists.
During the period of World War I (1914 1918), Duchamp became associated with a
group of Parisian artists known as the Dadaists. Dada was an art movement that was
characterized by a spirit of anarchic nihilism. The Dadaists were reacting to the
madness of the European culture that had found itself engaged in a bloody,
devastating war. In the words of Tomkins, dada s organized insanity was a direct
response to the nightmare of unending, meaningless slaughter in the trenches.
Another writer, Sarane Alexandrian, describes Dada as a detonation of anger which
showed itself in insults and buffoonery. The Dadaists also attacked the traditional
values of art. As claimed by Hans Richter in his book on the Dada movement, these
attacks were meant to mock the pretensions of European culture and the traditional
obsession of artists, art critics and art lovers with all that is holy.
Dada is often referred to as anti art and the Dada movement is often called an anti
movement. As noted by Alexandrian, the Dadaists seemed to be interested in
rejecting everything that existed in art and culture at the time. In Alexandrian s
words, it was an anti movement which opposed not only all the

  • 2. Conch Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis For the boys in the novel the conch was an empowering movement that made them be civilized for a while. The conch showed leadership to the boys, for example Golding states Him with the shell. Ralph! Ralph! Ralph! Let him be chief with the trumpet (Golding 22). This quote is showing the boys saw the shell as an entitling necessity. So far, the boys maintain civilized and try to create rules for themselves as Ralph leads them. As the story progresses, Jack starts to separate from civilization the boys are starting to forget about their main purpose for creating the fire which is to be rescued. Jack and almost all the boys forget about being rescued they then start to follow Jack as leader and stop listening to Ralph, who is more civilized
  • 3. Hardy Diary Entry GUYS I KNOW THE LAST CHAPTER WAS SHIT IM SORRY I promise this one will be better I ll edit the first chapter eventuallyyyy Anyways I hope you enjoy this c: got a secret can you keep it? Why did she do it? This was what I repeated to myself in my head. And with Dean? The boy who I had warned her about all these years. The boy who I thought she knew was dangerous. I guess she didn t know after all. I thought we both knew cheating was wrong. I knew what Bridgette would think of this, if she knew Charlotte had even touched Dean. We both know what she does. What she did. Bridgette could and would destroy Charlotte. I guess this is a secret I ll have to keep. I decided to text Charlotte. I knew I couldn t tell it to her face... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of course, I didn t know everything. Maybe the kiss was all. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe I ll have to find out myself what it really meant. I scanned my closet to see if there was anything suitable I had to wear. I picked out a black lace dress that I had brought a week ago. It was expensive, but it would show that I had the money. I looked down at my assortment of shoes, and pulled out some black strappy heels. Not as expensive, but they looked like it. I was getting dressed for one of Deans infamous parties. They were always full of drugs, alcohol, and sex. Everyone was invited. Everyone could do what ever they wanted. Except touch Dean, of course. I put the dress on and pulled up the zip on the side. I slid the heels on my feet, and did up the straps. I walked over to my mirror and looked at my reflection. I knew the dress would ve looked better if I had weighed less, but I know a little extra weight doesn t matter to the boys. As long as you had boobs, a butt, and your name was Bridgette Vinetta, every boy in the school would be drooling over you. And the funny thing is that I look extremely similar to her in the dark. If you re drunk, of
  • 4. U.S. Foreign Policy Toward Taiwan Essay Introduction The American foreign policy affects everyone in some type of way, shape or form. After all, all actions and decisions made by our nation have both positive and negative consequences on its citizens. A controversial issue or nation so to speak that the United States has been dealing with and is currently dealing with today is Taiwan. Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, faces several elements implicated by the U.S. foreign policy. The first element of American foreign policy is that the United Statesonly recognizes one China. Whether it s the China to the left of the Strait or the Taiwan to the right, it is up to both sides. The second element of American foreign policy is that Washington encourages dialogue between... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Shanghai CommuniquГ© The Shanghai CommuniquГ© was signed on the 27th of February in 1972 between our country and the Chinese. The communiquГ© was drafted by Henry Kissinger the National Security Adviser at the time and Chou En lai the Chinese Prime Minister. Ultimately the communiquГ© pledged China and the United States to work towards normalizing their relations, expanding people to people contacts and trade opportunities. This is where Taiwan came into play. Neither side wanted to broach the subject of Taiwan, but this tiny island was a massive block throughout the negotiations. However, neither China nor the United States was going to let China hinder the start of their developing new relationship. The Normalization CommuniquГ© The Normalization CommuniquГ© was announced by President Jimmy Carter and went into effect on January 1, 1979. Prior to this announcement, Western nations had been selling military equipment to Beijing permitted by President Jimmy Carter. However, President Carter vetoed a proposal to see 50 F 4 fighter bombers to Taiwan. Taiwan took this as a slap to the face and interpreted this action as a
  • 5. Lance Armstrong and Overcoming Obstacles Essays Pedaling strong through the Pyrenees Mountains at remarkable speed, Lance Armstrong approached the tenth stage of the Tour de France. Beginning at an elevation of thirty three feet above sea level, Armstrong was in sixteenth position with five minutes and fifty four seconds separating him and the leader. For many this would be an insurmountable amount of time to makeup, especially on a stage containing such a grueling and exhausting climb, but Armstrong saw it as an opportunity to put his great mountain climbing skills to work (Stein60). Pacing himself through the majority of the stage, he remained well behind the leader. Then it happened; he reached the horrendous Mount Hautacam, and began his eight mile sprint through the rain and up... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most grueling climb in Stage 10, Mount Hautacam, was ranked hors de categorie, meaning the ascent to the top is so steep it cannot be appointed a specific number (Thomsen 42). It is the Tour s way of saying, You [sic] don t want to know (Murphy 38). One by one, Lance picked away at his competitors, leaving them with nothing but exhaustion. After a punishing climb of 4,954 feet over one hundred twenty seven miles, Armstrong finished Stage 10 with an overall first place. Creating a four minute and fourteen second margin between him and the previous leader, Armstrong had gained a total of more than ten minutes during the most grueling stage throughout the entire Tour de France (Stein 60). He then raced through the remaining stages with great momentum and victoriously broke across the finish line on July 23, 2000 for the second consecutive time since his diagnosis of cancer (Sterling 2; Armstrong, Lance ). This accomplishment would be remarkable for anyone, but for a cancer survivor to attain such a feat is extraordinary. Lance Armstrong is indeed an extraordinary human being. He has achieved tremendous heights not only in the highly competitive world of cycling but also in common, everyday life. To many he is a champion, to others a role model, but no matter how he s viewed, he is an inspiration to everyone. After being diagnosed with cancer, Lance Armstrong fought back courageously and showed the world what a true hero really is. Throughout the

The actor who played Ray in this movie was Jamie Foxx. The stars of the movie was Ray Charles, Margie Hendricks played by actress Regina King, and Della Bea Robinson played by actress Kerry Washington. The movie was directed by Taylor Hackford. The photography director was Pawel Edelman. The year of the movie was 2004. I picked this movie because Jamie Foxx was in the movie, And I love Jamie Foxx. I also picked this movie because it had drama and music in it. I love a good drama movie because it keep my attention. In the movie they portrayed his physical change great showing how he changed after starting drugs. He changed physically by scratching all the time and not being able to sit still. I also noticed he barely could get around. An example, of his physical change was the scene where he was at work practicing his song with the other members in his group and he was on the piano and his could not stop shaking and he keep scratching himself. His drug problem got so bad and noticeable that his manager and the people in the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was cold and not caring. He really started only thinking about himself. He started cheating on his wife with a member in his group, not even caring that he had a wife at home. The movie showed that he really did not make time for his children. For example, his son told him he made the allstars and that the game was on thursday but he told his son he would not be in town and he would be on tour so he would not be able to make it. Another example of him being cold and not caring was when he kicked Margie and the other two women out the studio after he was just with Margie the day before practice. He did care that he went to jail for doing drug. The reason I say this is because after he got out his wife asked was he going to stop and he

  • 8. Arrow Of God District 9 Comparison Arrow of God written by Chinua Achebe is set in the 1920 s located in Nigeria. The book focuses on the main character Ezeulu, the Igbo people s chief priest. Throughout the text we see Ezeulu have conflicts with other tribes and with Christian missionaries, get sent to prison for denying a position from the British, and Ezeulu having difficulties within his own tribe and their yam harvest (Achebe). All the events that happened in Arrow of Godlead to a much deeper meaning. If we take a look at a look at the very complex film District 9produced by Peter Jackson, we see a very different but similar story. This is a mockumentary type film that explores the life of a MNU executive, an alien and his son, the Nigerian gang, and a mercenary soldier employed by MNU (IMDb). In both stories, Arrow of God and District 9, there are very blunt patterns of fiction, distinct archetypes, and prominent philosophies used. The stories above are two different types of media, with similar content. Both book and movie shows a tribe being pushed out of their home, in almost the same way. In both stories we see patterns of fiction, which is when a reader is introduced to a characterand some event or a challenge occurs. In Arrow of God, Ezeulu is faced with a difficult decision towards the end of the story. We call this The Choice. Ezeulu is faced with the decision to allow his tribe to participate in the New Yam Feast, but instead tells them not to and famine strikes the
  • 9. Ancient Egyptian Art And Art Ancient Egyptian art is painting, sculpture, architecture and other arts constructed by the civilization of ancient Egypt in the lower Nile River from 3000 BC. Ancient Egyptian artist tried to idealize the universe, not as it actually existed, but more enduring and lasting symbols. They tended to portray life and people as they wished them to be and not how they actually are. The artist followed certain rules or styles that made it unique and unmistakable. Most of the art was influenced by religion, mainly the belief in life after death. Most statues were meant to glorify and a physical representation of the Gods (including the Pharaoh) and Goddesses. Male statues was made darker in color than female statues. Sculpture and paintings were very precise and strictly followed. Human figures followed a specific pattern; the heads were viewed from the side while the body was viewed from the front. The artists used this style to preserve order and stability, and the current relationship between the king, people, and gods. They also used this type of style to dedicate to ensuring safety and happiness in the next life. The standard Egyptian tombs was a rectangular brick or stone structure with sloping sides build over an underground burial chamber. The Old Kingdom statues survived all those years because they fulfilled an important function in Egyptian tombs as substitute abodes for ka (the immortal human life force). Although the characteristics of Ancient Egyptian art has been
  • 10. Symbols Of The Caribbean Culture There are multiple cultures around the world that influence a country s way of living. A culture is the way in which certain groups behave, think, and what tangible objects they bring value to. The Colombian culture is profoundly influenced by the Spanish culture, but has many distinct factors that allow it to properly function. The first component of culture is symbols. Symbols are anything with significance and value shared by the people in a culture. A symbolmost countries value is their national flag. The colors of the Colombian flag each symbolize a characteristic ideal for a strong country. The yellow horizontal stripe is a reference to the wealth in gold Colombiawithheld before the arrival of Spaniards. The blue depicts the oceans lining the outer regions of the country. A second interpretation of the flag s blue color is the country s loyalty and consciousness. Lastly, the red reflects the bravery Colombians inherited during their victorious fight for independence as well as a recognition for those who lost their lives (Colombia s National Symbols, 2017). Another national symbolin Colombia is the Coat of Arms. The Coat of Arms is a national symbol of their motto Libertad y Orden which translates to Liberty and Order . The national bird, Andean condor, has an important meaning to the roots of Colombians, dating back to the indigenous Andean culture. The Andean people used the vulture as a symbol of health and power. Gestures as well are symbols that give
  • 11. St. Clare s Role In Assisi Clare was a very influential saint towards both men and woman in her time and today. There were those who saw her light and marveled at it, admired her and rejoiced. But only those who caught her fire could begin to understand (71). I think that she was very influential because she broke the role she played in her familyfor faith and a spiritual life, which may be seen as a small movement towards womans rights, even though they were still heavily restricted on what women could do and where they can go. By leaving her class behind to enter into a new spiritual world and weaving linens for poor churches around Assisi, I believe St. Clare clearly expresses her compassion for others, the church, and love for Lady Poverty. Clare ignored her family role of being married off which she sidestepped the prospect of marriage skillfully and repeatedly (26). By going against the customs of that time, I believe that she started a small woman s movement; where she influenced alike women of a higher class into following God and denying their conventional role of a woman at that time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clare became ill, She would have herself propped up with pillows; then she would spin and weave fine cloth for making alter linings (80). These linens would be given to surrounding churches of Assisi and as many as fifty sets of alter linings were constructed (80). Pearl Harbor has been attacked a few months earlier on December 7, 1941, which launched the official start of the U.S entering the war. The U.S was now faced with a war on two fronts. Roosevelt was being pulled between attacking the Japanese in the West or to aid his ally England in the East. Although Roosevelt promised Churchill to aid them as soon as the U.S enters the war, Roosevelt decided to deal with matters in the West first. Most had misconceptions that people with a mental illness were violent and scary as many equated mental illness with psychosis . Today, mental health has become less taboo, and science has worked to deepen our understanding of it (Phelan 189). Using this research, it is now possible to diagnose people more accurately than sixty years ago. While it has long been debated how to diagnose the main character, Holden Caulfield, from J.D. Salinger s The Catcher in the Rye, modern science may help. In this novel, Holden tells the story of how he ended up in a mental institution. Taking place over three days, he tells of his battle with isolation from peers, family, and strangers. Evidence from this novel suggests that Holden has reactive attachment disorder, or RAD. RAD is caused by a traumatic experience in childhood (Institute) which in Holden s case was neglect. Holden says that his parents were occupied and all before the had [him] (Salinger 3), and they sent him to many boarding schools. His parents ignore the roles normally fulfilled by parents. When Holden mentions family outings, his parents aren t involved. For example, his older brother took him and his sister to see Hamlet (Salinger 130). In addition, they have a woman, Charlene, cook for the kids while his parents go out and have fun (Salinger 196). When his parents are home, Holden still does not have a stable home life. After then the decision of Caparo Industries plc v Dickman outlined the three fold test: 1) There should be a relationship of proximity between the parties. 2) The resulting damage is reasonably foreseeable. 3) The situation should be one in which the court considers it fair, just and reasonable that the law should impose a duty of a given scope. This is not an easy test to meet. Firstly, a special relationship is required for the third party to claim that the defendant auditor owed him a duty of care. In order to define this concept, Lord Oliver outlined further conditions for the claimant to establish sufficient proximity with the defendant party. Thus the relationship of proximity is hard to specify which placed increasing difficulties on claimants. Secondly, once the claimant has established that the auditor did have a duty of care towards him, he will then need to show that this duty has been breached. It is even less likely that a breach will be found if the auditor has complied with industry practice. Thirdly, the claimant must establish a dominant causal link between the breach and the loss. The likelihood, therefore, of a third party claimant succeeding in their action is actually quite

Critique Of Kant Defining Kant s Critique of Pure Reason and its Relation to the Science of Metaphysics The understanding itself, in regard to representations and objects, is the paramount focus of Immanuel Kant s (1724 1804), Critique of Pure Reason (1781/1787). Although there is a manifold of philosophical definitions of what the critique of pure reason is defined as, this essay will assist in alleviating the flux that occurs when comprehending the meaning of Kant s, Critique of Pure Reason. After reading most of Kant s critique, in relation to Metaphysics, the critique of pure reason is a way of making that branch of philosophy a true possibility, then an actual science. After Kant defines the court of justice, he then introduces a new term that helps define a critique of pure reason, a critique of the faculty of reason. Kant offers another important definition in regard to a critique of pure reason in which he uses the term a critique of the faculty of reason, which will be fully defined in order to comprehend the next element of what a critique of pure reason is. I had once witness seen a judge delayed the trail to another day for the lateness of the defense. But the judge only sanction him so I figure that this may happen more than once. The defendant s tardiness, as well as his demeanor very nonchalant in court, made him appear to be unconcerned with the fact that he was on trial. At one point I thought he was going to fall asleep. This definitely had an impact on his impression on the jurors as they did not seem happy with his behavior and neither was the judge. Once the jurors had been sworn in, the prosecuting barrister began with her opening statement. She reminded the jury of their role, which was to weight up the evidence in order to decide on the facts of the case. In comparison, the role of the judge was to interpret the law and direct the jury accordingly. Although there was reference to statute when the defendant was read his charge, the remainder of the trial was less concerned with the law and more focused on establishing the facts of the case. The prosecution called 3 witnesses in total, all of which were police officers. Once they arrived in the witness stand, they were asked to swear an oath.

In contrast to the Mongolian military, the army of Song China formed not through an all encompassing draft but, rather, through recruitment. Instead of requiring military service, recruiting officers [would] go out in times of dearth, measuring the height of the men, testing their strength, and enrolling them in the standing army. Times of dearth means times of scarcity and famine. In other words, when times became tough, army officials would go to the fields looking to recruit strong men into the military. Since the military was comprised of a standing army, unlike Mongolia s, being in the army was a permanent job. For the time they were in the military, the men would not return to the fields. Perhaps this idea of a life away from the hardships of working the fields was exploited during recruitment. Because of this, it can be assumed that many wished to join the military. However, since the recruitment officers examined the men s physical prowess, not everyone would be able to join. As such, joining became competitive. Although it is questionable how competitive it truly was because the army recruiters were rewarded based upon the number of recruits the managed to gather. Also, rather than organize in units of ten, Conscription and Professional Soldiers in Song China shows that China s army of the time was instead organized into two separate

It doesn t have a consistent iambic pentameter, inferring that the relationship between the couple is fractious and broken, putting an huge effect on the reader to emphasis the strong feelings of hatred the couple has for one another. In addition, the quatrains that are structured in the poem look very familiar to the shape of a gun. A gun, used for self defence or to bring someone to harm demonstrates the conflict the couple has between each other. The use of enjambment is used in quatrain 2 and 3, were the lines are broken away from the quatrain when they clearly could have fitted it on the last line to make it a 14 line sonnet. Because home health aides are held responsible for their patient s overall well being, it is crucial that they contain the necessary skill sets to perform their job duties correctly. Given that the need for care of children, the elderly, the chronically ill and the disabled has not diminished over the past couple of years, the demand for home health aides has increased substantially over time. With the rise in medical advances that help keep people with serious injuries or illnesses alive and increased longevity, this demand is expected to increase dramatically. However, an issue for concern is that in most cases, home care providers are not licensed, and have no prior training requirements. Given that this occupation requires a great deal of responsibility, it is indispensable that home health aides have the knowledge necessary to administer the help required of them. According to a summary report for home health aides on O Net Online, employees in these occupations need anywhere from a few months to one year of working with experienced employees. Easter Morning is very abstract, has tropes that further the images presented, and is not confined to form. The perception of human ambiguities and abstract possibilities in homely bits of nature may have originated in Robert Frost. (N.A. 288) His work like most other authors of his time is influenced by others like Robert Frost and William Carlos Williams. This poem is heavily influenced by Robert Frost. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the concept of the Pythagorean Triples was discovered, mathematicians were eager to validate the concept. Euclid created a widely accepted formula in deriving a Pythagorean Triple, which can be proved with the help of the unit circle and algebra. Euclid s Formula and its Proof Euclid s formula for a Pythagorean triple is: a = 2mn, b = m^2 n^2, c = m^2 + n^2 The variables: m and n: stand for positive, rational integers. It is important to remember that m has to be greater than n, otherwise the statement valuing variable b on a Pythagorean triangle would be false because b cannot This can be understood in terms of the rational points on the unit circle. A unit circle is a circle with the radius of 1. We can draw a right triangle: a and b are the legs c is the hypotenuse In the next part, we must use the trigonometric identity of sin2+cos2=1. For representational purposes, we must look towards the following diagram for how the triangle would be represented in this proof. The next step in formulating this next equation would require us to find the sine and cosine of triangleABC. The sine formula is opposite/hypotenuse, which would equate to a/c. Additionally, the formula for cosine is adjacent/hypotenuse, equating to b/c. Knowing the trigonometric identity, we can derive the new eqution: For the next step, we will need to know the equation of a [unit] circle: x2 + y2 = 1 We know that

An iris diaphragm is made of thin, opaque plates, and turning a ring changes the diameter of the central opening. For optical camouflage to work properly, this opening must be the size of a pinhole. Why? This ensures a larger depth of field so that the screen (in this case the cloak) can be located any distance from the projector. The Differences Between The Developmental Policies Donaldson examined a similar problem in Guizhou and Yunnan wherein even though poverty reduction was one of the explicit goals of developmental programs in two of China s most remote provinces, he found that the differences between the developmental policies in Guizhou and Yunnan. Wherein one (Guizhou) saw fairly modest economic growth but greatly reduced poverty, compared to Yunnan which saw strong economic growth but stagnant rates of rural poverty i.e. economic growth did not reduce poverty. This was accomplished, Donaldson argues, based on individual official s experiences and leadership style. Guizhou focused on micro level opportunities to increase farmers livelihoods by shifting rural labor (through out of province migration) and increasing opportunities for farmers to increase their incomes at home, in part by building modest roads linking villages to local markets and promoting local, small scale industries, such as rural tourism and coal mining. Donaldson s findings are evidence to the importance of evaluating and setting the policy agenda with respect to all of the objectives outlined in food policy rather than just focusing on a single aspect, in this case poverty reduction, can hamstring the policy. Ignoring the interdependence of the objectives will ultimately cripple developmental policy as the externalities of narrow minded policy create a negative feedback loop and thus kicks the developmental can down the road rather than dealing with the root of the

  • 54. Essay on Hospitality in The Hebrew Scriptures To welcome the other, the friend or the stranger, is a fundamental aspect of human society, friendship, love and life. It is the intersection of two lives, an event that can fundamentally alter the paths of all those involved. This importance within the basic functioning of human life makes the recognition of hospitality as a central theme of the Hebrew Scriptures an unsurprising reality. With this in mind then, through this essay we will examine the understanding of hospitality laid out in the canonical scriptures of the Hebrew Bible. Through exploring the events of Abraham s meeting guests in Genesis 18, the text of terror in Judges 19 in which hospitality is violated and the story of the book of Ruth, we will elicit the role... These entwined moments of welcome add to the already high significance societies place upon hospitality by alluding to a divine presence among those who meet, reinforcing the importance of this practice for those who attempt to follow the Hebrew Faith. Perhaps on of the most important occurrences of the practice of hospitality in the Hebrew Scriptures, and identified by some sources as paradigmatic , the encounter of Abraham with three strangers in Genesis 18 reflects the divinely entwined hospitality mentioned earlier. In this account, the patriarch Abraham is seen as offering the idealized fulfillment of true hospitality through the overwhelming nature of his actions and offerings. From the beginning of the story, we see Abraham go out of his way to greet and welcome the guest, from the initial running to meet them before bowing in their presence, through to the offer of bread and the reality of a far greater feast, Abraham spares nothing in his encounter with the strangers. These actions take on further meaning when referenced in light of the readers awareness that one of these strangers is The Lord (Gen 18:1). Through the introduction of the divine character, and this character s acceptance of Abraham s hospitality , a paradigm is established in the story that is found throughout the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures. Because of the paradigmatic model of
  • 55. Adam Corolla Usc Lecture Essay Adam Carolla Lecture Paper One of the basic tenets of life is that greater opportunities will appear to individuals that actively pursue and know how to recognize them. Since the majority of us do not have the luxury of being born into wealth or power, the choices that we make ultimately shape our successes in life. Adam Carolla begins by using examples to highlight the concepts of consistency and residual income. He explains that it is easier and more useful to understand how to sell something and continue selling it again and again as opposed to figuring out how to simply make a large amount of money. As a student that had performed poorly in high school, he worked a variety of jobs including carpet cleaner and boxing trainer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conversely, Adam Carolla cites an example of negative reinforcement being used as a form of motivation. He refers to his time working as a carpet cleaner out of high school and the pain he felt from working a horrible job with people he did not like. Carolla explains that by being miserable at a bad job, he learned he did not want to continue working at a career that he did not enjoy. Using pain as a motivating factor, this realization forced Adam to forge a better career path for himself. Another important aspect of creating opportunities revolves around the concept of doing a job well regardless of whether you enjoy it or not. In reality, the dream job is not typically the first job, the second job, or even the third. However, this does not count as an excuse for not performing to the highest capacity at any level of work. Adam expands, saying that it is crucial to get in the habit of doing things well and not judge a job because you it feel it might be below you. Doing a job properly and to the fullest ability demonstrates attention to the detail and is a key indicator of overall job performance to employers. Experience and knowledge are also key elements that an individual can use to take advantage of opportunities. In order to obtain chance for advancement, it is imperative to commit the time to understand all the aspects of a job and acquire the knowledge necessary for when the opportunity does come. In
  • 56. Dualism In Toni Morrison s A Mercy A Mercy by Toni Morrison divulges about wilderness and its unstructured ruling in society. It alludes again and again throughout the text that it is a bad thing because of its heavily negative connotation to it when discussed by others, such as the Blacksmith. Florence does not seem to understand it but she believes it s negative at the beginning, however, after much character development her she accept the wildernessto be a part of herself. Her wild natureis the result of uncivilized upbringing, but it has protected her from the situations that were too much to bear, such as the trauma with her mother and the Blacksmith. The text starts off with her feet, it is the part in which she is grounded on. Her feet represent her, and so when she hears, Only bad women wear high heels. I am dangerous, she says, and wild. The word wild in this context infers that Florens is uncivilized, different from the others. Her heels ward off a meaning of danger and sensual. This is a foreshadowing of her conflict with the Blacksmith. As the text progress she says, she relents and lets me wear the throwaway shoes from Senhora s house, pointy toe, one raised heel broke, the other worn and a buckle on top. As a result, Lina says, my feet are useless, will always be too tender for life and never have the strong soles, tougher than leather, that life requires. • 57. Marcel Duchamp ( 1887-1968 ) Marcel Duchamp (1887 1968) was a French artist, known for his contributions to the Dada movement and for his influence on other artists that followed him. He was born in Blainville sur Crevon, a small town in northern France where his father served as a notary. His mother was artistically inclined and thus Duchamp became interested in sketching and painting when he was a teenager. At the age of seventeen, he moved to Paris to study art at the AcadГ©mie Julian. As a young artist, he was influenced by Cubismand Futurism, the two new art movements that were developing at the time. During the period of World War I (1914 1918), Duchamp became associated with a group of Parisian artists known as the Dadaists. Dada was an art movement that was characterized by a spirit of anarchic nihilism. The Dadaists were reacting to the madness of the European culture that had found itself engaged in a bloody, devastating war. In the words of Tomkins, dada s organized insanity was a direct response to the nightmare of unending, meaningless slaughter in the trenches. Another writer, Sarane Alexandrian, describes Dada as a detonation of anger which showed itself in insults and buffoonery. The Dadaists also attacked the traditional values of art. As claimed by Hans Richter in his book on the Dada movement, these attacks were meant to mock the pretensions of European culture and the traditional obsession of artists, art critics and art lovers with all that is holy. Dada is often referred to as anti art and the Dada movement is often called an anti movement. As noted by Alexandrian, the Dadaists seemed to be interested in rejecting everything that existed in art and culture at the time. In Alexandrian s words, it was an anti movement which opposed not only all the
