Abstract— A strain of microalgae was isolated from phytoplankton samples collected from the sea coast of Amsheet, North Lebanon. Molecular diagnosis based on ribosomal RNA genes showed it to be most closely related to Chlorella sp. (GenBank accession KC188335.1) with over 90 % nucleotide identity. It was then evaluated whether N and P amendments of seawater fertilized with Guillard’s f/2 medium would improve algal growth and production. Addition of nitrogen (30 ppm) and/or phosphorus (2 ppm) to microalgae grown under laboratory conditions in 3L bioreactors resulted in improved biomass yield (mg dry matter/ L) by approximately 48%, and increased protein yield by approximately 56%, from 19.5% to 30.6% of DM content. Total protein yield/L of culture medium was therefore increased by approximately 83%. Total lipid content and carotenoid levels of the microalgal culture were not affected by the N+P amendement, whereas chlorophyll content was almost doubled. When lower levels of N+P supplementations, 10 and 20 ppm N, were tried, the biomass yield was also improved. The experiment was repeated in 20 L bioreactors in a plastic greenhouse, under normal environmental conditions, with an average temperature of 28°C and a maximum temperature of 36°C. At these relatively high temperatures, the growth rate was slowed down, but N supplementations at 10 and 20 ppm resulted in improved dry matter yield by 25 and 45% respectively, and protein content by 17 and 35%, respectively. Knowledge of the optimal culturing conditions of this local Chlorella strain is essential for its efficient production and is expected to serve future environmental and biotechnological purposes.

Studying the expression of proteins in Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus muscle, is essential to understand the biological, physiological and ecological aspects that may be of advantage in ecotoxicology as a tool for biomonitoring the effects of environmental pollution, as well as food safety. This study was aimed to accomplish a systematic characterization of the muscle proteome as well as to identify a putative set of protein biomarkers in C. nigrodigitatus to environmental pollution in Ologe and Badagry lagoons. Fifteen fi sh samples were used
as representative of the population for proteomics analysis. 116 proteins was expressed with 70 up-regulated, 25 down-regulated from Ologe Lagoon and 30 up-regulated, 17 down-regulated proteins from Badagry Lagoon expressed in the muscle of C. nigrodigitatus in response to environmental stressors using iTRAQ, while 8 protein spots from 2-D gels, representing 8 proteins with 2 up-regulated and 6 down-regulated, have been identifi ed using MALDI TOF/TOF MS. Pearson correlation revealed signifi cant correlation (p < 0.05) betwee environmental variables and protein markers. The investigation revealed that the expressed proteins in the muscle of C. nigrodigitatus served as a prognostic tool to assess the fi sh health and pollution status, which was observed that the fi sh were physiologically perturbed by environmental stressors in Ologe and Badagry lagoons.

— The bioavailability and uptake of silver from silver nanoparticles in soil was investigated. Two species of insects, Acheta domesticus and Tenebrio molitor, and two species of plants, Helianthus annuus and Sorghum vulgare, were exposed to a range of concentrations of silver nanoparticles in soil. Silver nanoparticles were charactrized by techniques including transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and powder X-ray diffraction. The concentration of silver in insects and plants exposed to silver nanoparticles was measured using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The results suggested an increase in the levels of silver in both insects and plants as a function of increasing concentrations of silver nanoparticles in soil. The translocation of silver to various parts of dicot plants such as stems and leaves was also observed. Such a result was not observed in the case of monocot plants. Results from this study suggests that silver nanoparticles would be available for uptake by insects and plants in terrestrial ecosystems.

physiological and metabolical dysregulations. In chronic treatment of dimethoate exposure may pose serious threat to fish

La epigenètica integra la informació genòmica amb la ambiental i és la base de la plasticitat fenotípica Es repassen breument els principals mecanismes epigenètics i diferents mètodes per a avaluar canvis en la metilació del DNA. Seguidament, es presenten exemples de com la epigenètica pot contribuir en la recerca en ecologia i, de passada, en la producció animal. Per acabar, mostrarem alguns exemples de recerca en epigenòmica en poblacions naturals de les Illes Medes, de com petites variacions en les condicions ambientals al principi de la vida tenen conseqüències a llarg termini, i discutirem breument aspectes adaptatius en un context de canvi global.

Microorganisms play a key role in wastewater bio-treatment processes and understanding the microbial community structure is of great importance to improve treatment performance. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was used to monitor succession of the microbial community and thus predominant bands were sequenced to reveal the microbial community composition inside palm oil mill effluent (POME) wastewater.DNA bands from DGGE gels were excised with a sterile blade and placed in 1.5 ml eppendorf tube containing 50 μl deionized water (ddH2O). Tubes were incubated overnight at 4C to elute the DNA. Eluted DNA was purified using QIAquick gel extraction kits (QIAGEN, Inc., Valencia, CA) and was frozen and thawed three times.Microbial DNA successfully excised and purified from DGGE was amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Five micro liters of the supernatant were used as a template to re-amplify the DNA using 16s rDNA primers,341f (with no GC-clamp) (5'- cct-acg-gga-ggc-agc-ag-3') and reverse(r) primers 907r (5'-ccc-cgt-caa-ttc-att-tga-gtt-t-3'). Amplification was repeated referring to the steps in ‘PCR amplification of 16s rDNA’. PCR products from agarose gels were cut and purified using QIAquick Gel Extraction Kit (QIAGEN, Inc., Valencia, CA), which were similar to the purification steps after recovery of DNA from DGGE, and sequenced in both directions with the same primers (with no GC-clamp) as used in PCR. Moreover, start-up is an important step in establishing proper community structure in all kinds of biological treatment processes. In anaerobic POME wastewater, 6 sequences of Firmicutes, 5 sequence of Proteobacterium and 2 sequences of Bacteroidetes were found through denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) results. Sequence closely related to Rummeliibacillus suwonensis strain G20 was detected grows at band BE10, BE11, BE12, BE15, BE16, BE17 and BE18. Meanwhile BE25 and BE26 were found at band after treatment process done.Rummeliibacillus suwonensis is an aerobic, Gram-positive, rod shaped, round-spore-forming bacteria which were isolated from aerobic condition. — Natural and synthetic estrogens have been detected in rivers, lakes and estuaries in many parts of the world. Primary sources of these compounds are domestic and industrial effluents, which are not deleted after the water treatment. Estrogen has been the endocrine disruptor most researched to be very active biologically and be the etiologic agent of diverse types of cancer and other conditions such as endometriosis, precocious puberty, feminization, masculinization, sterility. In this context, we use water of 36 natural reservoirs or dams, in a bioassay to characterize their estrogenicity in culture of MCF7 cells and obtained high concentration of estrogen in samples taken in Ibiúna and Equestrian Santo Amaro / SP. However, certain concentration in our samples for most water samples from different regions was very close to the limit of quantification by bioassay and estrogen was in fmol. It has been shown that e-screen assay with MCF7 cells is a sensitive and stable tool for quantitative analysis of estrogenicity of water and can easily be developed and implemented for routine for estrogen quantification also in animal food and man, aqueous and plastics etc. Keywords— endocrine disrupters, estrogen, breast cancer cells, (MCF7) bioassay: E-screen assay

On the Relationship between Digestive Gases and Buoyancy in Sharks by Erich K Ritter in crimson publishers: Journal of Oceanography
Digestive gases, which naturally occur inside marine animals, affect their buoyancy. Following Boyle’s law, any change in hydrodynamic pressure leads to a change in the volume of such gases. Therefore during an ascent from deep to shallow waters, decompressing gases can lead to a positive effect on buoyancy. It may be necessary to release these gases into the surrounding water for an animal to control its depth effectively. Here, two videos are presented on how sharks can get rid of excessive digestive gases and it is discussed how these observations fit with the general understanding of digestive gas production and buoyancy control.

In this study, nutritional profiles and growth performances of yellow mealworm, Tenebriomolitor larvae (TML) were assessed cultivated using common food wastes i.e. watermelon rinds, broilers’ eggshells and banana peels. Nutritional profiles and growth performance of TML were evaluated after 28-day feeding trial. Post-feeding proximate analysis showed significant increment of nutritional contents compared to the control groups; whereby TML demonstrated highest level of crude protein (43.38%±2.71), moisture (9.74%±0.23) and ash (4.40%±0.22) in the group treated with watermelon wastes. On the other hand, TML showed highest level of crude fibre (8.73%±0.05) when treated with broilers’ eggshells; and higher level of crude fat (40.13%±4.66) with banana wastes. Nitrogen-free extract (NFE) contents were also noticed higher in the group treated with banana wastes (4.46%±5.30). In terms of growth performance, TML administrated with watermelon wastes demonstrated superior in specific growth rate (2.50%±0.43) and feed conversion efficiency (0.10%±0.01). Interestingly, TML grown with banana wastes showed highest survival rate (97.5%) among all. In short, TML cultivation using watermelon and banana wastes showed a promising result on nutritional fortification and growth enhancement.
Artificial Insemination and its Importance in Marine Crustaceans: A Review by Chandan Haldar*, Shyam Kumar and Raju Ram in crimson publishers: Journal of Marine Biology
Artificial Insemination (AI) is a tool for genetic manipulation in the crustacean stock including shrimp and crabs. It is seen as one of the means for propagating shrimp culture to new areas by controlled reproduction. But there are few studies on the reproduction and embryology of marine crustaceans whereas other groups of freshwater crustaceans have received much attention, and their embryology is better documented. So for the proper development of the marine production it is now necessary to focus on the artificial insemination technique in marine species also. In the current review we have discussed on the different tool and techniques used in artificial insemination of marine crustaceans In future, more number of research and development works must be conducted to increase the production of marine crustaceans by controlled reproduction through artificial insemination.

Sustainable production of renewable energy is passionately debated worldwide since it is progressively understood that first-generation biofuels are primarily produced from food crops. Mostly oilseeds do not contain enough amount of fat content to achieve targets for biofuel production. These concerns have increased the attention in developing second-generation biofuels produced from non-food feed stocks such as microalgae, which potentially offer high-fat content. The advantages of biofuel over fossil fuel are they are less toxic, biodegradable and lower emission greenhouse gases. This article reviews the current status of microalgae use for biodiesel production, including their cultivation, harvesting, and processing. The economic development of the world is hugely dependent on fossil fuel supplies which are constrained not only by partial availability but also generate high levels of pollution.
Because of the limited fossil fuel, concerted efforts have been started to search for alternative bio fuels like biodiesel, bio ethanol and since the diesel is being used massively in industrial commercial, fisheries, agriculture, and other sectors. So, the production and consumption of biodiesel from oil seeds crops have been getting renewed interest in recent years in India to overcome the drawbacks of oil from oilseed crops. Biodiesel produced from micro-algae has several benefits over the above resources due to higher algal biomass and oil yields and the need of non-arable land for its growth. Industrial and municipal wastewaters can be applied for farming of microalgal oil that can be used for the production of biodiesel to entirely displace petro diesel. The micro algal biomass has been reported to yield high oil contents and has the diesel production. Accordingly, a lot of R & D work has been initiated for the growth, harvesting, oil extraction and conversion to biodiesel.

This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
