Determinació per factors ambientals de la proporció de sexes a les poblacions: Mecanismes, contribució de la epigenètica i aspectes adaptatius en un context de canvi global

Abstract: La proporció de sexes és un paràmetre fonamental en la demografia de les poblacions. Es presenta el coneixement que actualment es té sobre els mecanismes moleculars que la determinen i com en molts casos hi ha una participació combinada d’elements genètics i factors ambientals. La epigenètica integra la informació genòmica amb la ambiental i és la base de la plasticitat fenotípica Es repassen breument els principals mecanismes epigenètics i diferents mètodes per a avaluar canvis en la metilació del DNA. Seguidament, es presenten exemples de com la epigenètica pot contribuir en la recerca en ecologia i, de passada, en la producció animal. Per acabar, mostrarem alguns exemples de recerca en epigenòmica en poblacions naturals de les Illes Medes, de com petites variacions en les condicions ambientals al principi de la vida tenen conseqüències a llarg termini, i discutirem breument aspectes adaptatius en un context de canvi global.

suspended solids. Various studies have suggested that ozone attacks the bacterial cell surface, alters the permeability of the cell membrane and ultimately results in the leakage of cell
contents. However, the microbes in the sludge form a complex matrix, and ozone may affect bacterial populations at different rates different depending on their locations in the floc or their
capacity for adaptation. Nitrification, a key step of the nitrogen cycle, is the sequential oxidation of ammonia via nitrite to nitrate. This process is catalysed by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria
(AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), whose cooperation is needed to achieve complete nitrification. Although the nitrification process in WWTPs has been investigated in depth, the response of microbial communities are still a focus of considerable interest due to their high sensitivity to inhibitory compounds and environmental factors that results in repeated
breakdowns of nitrification performance. In this study, we focus on two aspects that have not been thoroughly considered in previous studies; the use of ozone for Gordonia foaming

The increase in resolution and taxon sampling of algal phylogenies resulting from the various algal tree of life projects and other initiatives worldwide opens tremendous opportunity to learn more about the evolution of all aspects of algal biology. Using evolutionary modeling techniques in a phylogenetic context, hypotheses about the evolution of particular traits and their interaction with speciation-extinction dynamics become testable. I will illustrate this with three case studies. First, I will investigate the evolution of the thermal niche of seaweeds, showing how it affects latitudinal diversity patterns. Second, I will test the hypothesis that the evolution of cellular trace element requirements (stoichiometry) is dominated by endosymbiosis events. Third, I will investigate the evolution of morphological traits typically used in species-level systematics, focusing on its implications for the prevalence of cryptic diversity. These case studies show the potential and limitations of the approach, and offer new insights in algal evolution from the very recent to the very ancient, and across the various subdisciplines of algal biology.

Seminar abstract: I will be talking about two ongoing research projects in my laboratory: (1) evolution of thermal niches in seaweeds, (2) biodiversity of endolithic algae in coral skeletons and its relationship with the environment. Using evolutionary models in an explicit phylogenetic framework, patterns of evolution in environmental traits such as the sea surface temperature (SST) affinities of species can be studied. Based on case studies in the green algae Codium and Halimeda, it is shown that lineages behave differently when it comes to their evolution of SST affinities, and that there is a strong correlation between the evolution of SST affinities and rates of species diversification. For the second part of the talk, I will focus on our recent work on environmental sequencing of coral skeletons. These feature unexpectedly high biodiversity of limestone-boring algae as well as many unknown inhabitants. Our first results indicate that the diversity of algal endoliths may be linked to environmental conditions, but this hypothesis needs further testing.
Biomarkers are the promising tool used to measure the Contaminant's exposure and its effect on living organism. This presentation deal with the concepts, approaches, development of novel biomarker, application in the aquatic environment and current status of research in India etc.

"Study and understand the present to explain the past"
ABSTRACT: Grab samples from Enol Lake (1080 m.a.s.l., Picos de Europa National Park, Spain) were collected to evaluate the chironomid community composition, structure and spatial and temporal variability. We obtained 3 replicate samples at 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 m water depth four times per year (May, July, September and November) in two consecutive years (2013 and 2014), with a total of 120 samples analyzed. A total of 19 taxa were identified, although the dominant taxa in all samples were Paratanytarsus, Chironomus, Tanytarsus and Procladius choreus. Chironomusand Stictochironomus taxa abundance increased with depth while the more abundant taxa in the littoral were Paratanytarsus,Endochironomus and Corynoneura. Seasonal changes concern many chironomid taxa, although it is more relevant in the case ofCorynoneura, Tanytarsus and Procladius. Spatial changes are mostly related to the presence of macrophytes and algae, especially Chara, as chironomid composition and abundance are very different in samples from macrophyte-rich and poor areas.
This work has sought to answer how global environmental change affects the concentration of nutrients in Mediterranean rivers. By means of a modeling effort using data collected by water agencies, this work has contributed to the knowledge of the relevant factors that drive nutrient dynamics in Mediterranean rivers, and how these change in time and space. Furthermore, it has clearly shown the potential modeling and time-series analysis offer to river scientists and managers.

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.

- In a global change scenario, epigenetics provide organisms with a source
of phenotypic plasticity that can allow adaption to a new environment
- The study of variation in natural populations can be greatly benefited
if research in ecology integrates epigenetics
- The sex ratio is a fundamental parameter in population demography
and in many cases is determined by a combination of
genetic and environmental factors
- Epigenetic mechanisms provide organisms the capability to integrate
genomic and environmental information to produce a given phenotype
