Textbooks are materials used by teachers; they are a great tool for

teaching and can be used as syllabi, guidelines, or just the main source to be

followed during a course. English teachers use their textbooks to guide their

lessons; however, in some cases these textbooks do not reflect the reality of the

classroom in terms of wants and interests. In other words, these textbooks do

not match the students’ needs, they might not provide the type of activities that

the teacher and students really need for a specific class. In order to avoid this,

the teacher should start designing materials that can meet students’ needs and

interests that can help them use their target language in real situations.

For teachers to design or adapt their own teaching materials they should

identify their students’ particular learning environment to overcome the lack of

connection between textbooks, materials, and the teaching learning process.

When designing materials the teacher should also incorporate elements of the

learners’ culture such as the environment where they live, what people do when

celebrating holidays, festivals, traditions or any other types of customs from

which they make connection with the way they live. They make use their target

language by considering cultural aspects to ensure appropriate challenge and

levels of success.

Finally, this presents a unique challenge for teachers as they strive to

help these learners achieve the English language. Every teacher who teaches

English as a foreign language should address the needs of the students, by

placing a strong emphasis on the development of materials that can fit the
learners’ learning environment and the development of the target language.

Teachers must continually be focused on these students and find effective ways

to arrange their learning to help them achieve the language by propitiating a

delightful learning environment.
