TOPIC:TEACHER’S HAND BOOK,PUPIL
WORKBOOK AND SUPPLEMENTARY READERS
 INTRODUCTION
 The handbooks simply puts is about supporting
quality teachers.
 As teachers grow professionally, their instructional
expertise in increases and the became more effective
at various aspects of teaching.
 Workbooks are usually filled with practice problems ,
where the answers can be written directed in the
books.
 Supplementary readers which helps integrate the
usage of the English languages by means of short
stories , poems vocabulary , creative writing and
content writing through compassions.
 The teacher’s handbook aim at helping the
teacher to monitor the programmed.
 Handbook is a valuable teaching device suitable
for a wide range of interests and abilities
 It contains list of teaching aids, summarization of
learning's, an exercise in organization, medium
for self-expression, an indication of progress
and assignment of various kinds
 A bibliography of relevant books and journal
should be included.

 It is a device for review work.
 It suggests the teacher to adopt appropriate
strategies to teach every topic
 Finding the learning experiences for each
topic is easy.
 Tangible evidence for the progress of
students.
 Not easily available to all teachers.
 DISADVANTAGE
 Teacher should form the habit of looking and
referring the guide book before going to
class
 Workbooks vary greatly in content and
organization
 At one extreme are workbooks that reprint
pages of associated textbooks, replacing key
words with blanks that are to be filled in by
pupils after reading their texts.
 At the other extreme are workbooks that
make provision for many different type of
activities, forms for reporting data, diagrams
to be labeled, blank spaces for sketches and
clippings, suggestions for supplementary
work, study guides for reading assignments
and self-testing devices.
 Heavily burdened teachers find the better workbooks
useful in saving time and energy
 Help pupils who are working under self-direction to
study more effectively
 It fosters scientific thinking.
 Pupils who have missed time because of illness or from
having left school prematurely can make up without
close supervision.
 DISADVANTAGES
 Workbooks are relatively inflexible.
 The content is highly organized and cannot be altered
easily
 There is little provision for the inclusion of new
materials.
 Readers of supplementary readers is a method of
introducing students an up to date information
and of meeting varied interests and needs of the
pupils
 Good supplementary readers in science will serve
to stimulate additional reading in the same
related topic
 SUPPLEMENTARY SCIENCE READING
 The reading of best available books and journals
is vital for the total development of students
 There is a close relationship between student
activity in science such as science club, field trips
, science fair etc.
 Effect on the students
 It encourages thinking and discussion
 It develops interest in applied aspects of
science
 It stimulates further reading
 Qualities of the book
 It is accurate and authoritative.
 Its general theme and tone are wholesome
 It has good literacy standard – clear style,
grammatically correct, easy to read.
 ADVANTAGES
 Stimulates scientific interests in the pupils.
 Supplements and integrates the classroom
learning.
 Inculcates self study habits and promotes
independent readings.
 Strengthens linguistic ability.
 Develops literary tastes.

 Teachers and administrator educators who can
employs the books research and application
strategies in their teacher training and
instructional leadership program.
 Workbook of the latter type serve as a combined
course of study, a study guide and a record book.
 Students of all government primary and upper
primary schools across the state will soon have
assess to nearly 200 new books that are to be
added to the collection of supplementary readers
in school libraries.
