Assistance for Instructors to Improve
Program Performance

Session Objectives
Participants will learn about a system of onsite technical
assistance designed to help instructors:
Use CASAS assessment data to improve performance;
Gain an understanding of the links between CASAS assessment data
and NRS Tables 4 and 4B;
Understand the classroom observation process;
Assess their technical assistance needs; and
Develop a plan for professional development.
Need for the System

Creating a System of TA for Instructors

  • 2. Who’s In the Audience What is the name of your program? What type of services do you currently provide? What population do you serve (age, location, ethnicity)?
  • 3. Why this Session? Why did you choose to come to this session? What would you like to get out of this session?
  • 4. Session Objectives Participants will learn about a system of onsite technical assistance designed to help instructors: Use CASAS assessment data to improve performance; Gain an understanding of the links between CASAS assessment data and NRS Tables 4 and 4B; Understand the classroom observation process; Assess their technical assistance needs; and Develop a plan for professional development.
  • 5. Need for the System State not meeting performance targets Needed a group of skilled professionals to be the eyes and ears of the state. Instructors did not receive the assessment data Instructors did not use the assessment data Instructors did not understand how their work in the classroom was tied to the state’s performance How do we change this?
  • 6. What is the First Step? Determine current practices through: Review of data on the class and program performance • National Reporting System Data • Monitoring Data Review of lesson plans and compare them to assessment data • Student Performance By Competency • Class Profile By Competency • TE Reports/Reports form other databases Speak with the Instructor about his/her needs Observation • Classroom Observation Tool Survey Stakeholders (learners, volunteers, tutors, etc.)

  • 10. Reviewing Class and Program Data? Think about your own program: What outcomes are you expected to achieve? Do you have a data system that tracks the outcomes you are expected to achieve? How does your work in the classroom impact those outcomes?
  • 11. You have reviewed the data now what? Determine what changes need to be made: Professional Development • Create a PD Plan Change Program Design • Number of instructional hours learners are in the class • How learners are placed? Change who you serve • What learners advance with you and what learners do not advance? Change how you serve learners • What is your retention rate? • Should you move to a blended learning model? What are the priorities? Create an implementation plan.
