This document summarizes a proposed crash avoidance system for drones. When one of a drone's motors fails, the system would allow the pilot to manually switch the drone from a quadcopter to a tricopter configuration using a signal sent to the flight controller. This would maintain pilot control and allow the drone to safely land. The system would involve connecting an Arduino board to the flight controller to receive the pilot's signal and cut power to the failed motor while keeping the other three motors operational during the transition, ensuring stable controlled landing. A literature review found that existing methods focus on software solutions while this approach addresses the problem from both a software and hardware perspective.

Synthesis of a flight control system for such an aircraft that achieves stable and acceptable performance across a specified flying envelope in the presence of uncertainties represents an attractive and challenging design problem. This study uses the genetic self-tuning PID algorithm to develop an intelligent flight control system for the aerosonde UAV model. To improve the system's transient responses, the gains of the PID controller are improved using a genetic algorithm (GA). Simulink/MATLAB software is used to model and simulate the proposed system. The proposed PID controller integrated with the GA is compared with the classical one. Three simulation scenarios are carried out. In the first scenario, and at normal conditions, the proposed controller performance is better than the classical one. While in the second scenario, identical results are achieved from both controllers. Finally, in the third scenario, the PID controller with GA shows the robustness and durability of the system compared with the classical PID in presence of external wind disturbance. Optimal backstepping control of quadrotor UAV using gravitational search opti...journalBEEI
Quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has superior characteristics such as ability to take off and land vertically, to hover in a stable air condition and to perform fast maneuvers. However, developing a high-performance quadrotor UAV controller is a difficult problem as quadrotor is an unstable and underactuated nonlinear system. The effort in this article focuses on designing and optimizing an autonomous quadrotor UAV controller. First, the aerial vehicle's dynamic model is presented. Then it is suggested an optimal backstepping controller (OBC). Traditionally, backstepping controller (BC) parameters are often selected arbitrarily. The gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is used here to determine the BC parameter optimum values. In the algorithm, the control parameters are calculated using an integral absolute error to minimize the fitness function. As the control law is based on the theorem of Lyapunov, the asymptotic stability of the scheme can be ensured. Finally, several simulation studies are conducted to show the efficacy of the suggested OBC.
Aircraft pitch control design using LQG controller based on genetic algorithmTELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
Designing a robust aircraft control system used to achieve a good tracking performance and stable dynamic behavior against working disturbances problem has attracted attention of control engineers. In this paper, a pitch angle control system for aircraft is designed utilizing liner quadratic Gaussian (LQG) optimal controller technique with a numerical tuning algorithm method in the longitudinal plane through cruising stage. Main design approach of LQG controller includes obtaining best weighting matrices values using trial and error method that consumes effort and takes more time, in addition, there is no guarantees to obtain optimum values for weighting matrices elements. In this research, genetic algorithm (GA) is used to optimize the state and control weighting matrices and determine best values for their elements. The proposed traditional and optimized LQG pitch controller schemes are implemented utilizing Matlab simulation tool and their performance are presented and compared based on transient and steady state performance parameters. The simulation results reveal the ability of the optimized GA_LQG controller to reject the effect of the noises in the aircraft system dynamic and achieve a good and stable tracking performance compared with that of the conventional LQG pitch control system.
Adaptive proportional integral derivative deep feedforward network for quadr...IJECEIAES
When the controlled system is subject to parameter variations and external disturbances, a fixed-parameter proportional integral derivative (PID) controller cannot ensure its stabilization. In this case, its control requires online parameter adjustment. Specifically, as the quadrotor is a multi-input multi-output, nonlinear, and underactuated system, robust control is necessary to ensure efficient trajectory tracking flights. In this paper, an adaptive proportional integral derivative (APID) controller is proposed to control the quadrotor systems. This APID-based control strategy uses a two hidden layer deep feedforward network (DFN), where the one-step secant algorithm is chosen for initializing the DFN parameters. All the design steps of the proposed adaptive controller are described. The multidimensional particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used for tuning the DFN parameters. Then, using two simulation efficiency tests, a comparison between the proposed PSO-based APID-DFN, the (non-optimized) APID-DFN, the feedforward network APID, and the fixed-parameter PID controllers proves much efficiency of the proposed adaptive controller. The results illustrate that the proposed PSO-based APID-DFN controller can ensure good quadrotor system stabilization and achieve minimum overshoot and faster convergence speed for all quadrotor motions. Thus, the proposed control strategy could be considered an additional intelligent method-based adaptive control for unmanned aerial vehicles.

An Overview of Adaptive Approaches in Flight ControlIJERA Editor
Multi-mode switching between controllers corresponding to different modes of operation is needed in those cases when the transition from one mode to another results in substantial flight-critical variations in the aircraft dynamics. To address this problem, a general framework for multi-modal flight control is proposed. The framework is based on the Multiple Models, Switching and Tuning (MMST) methodology, combined with Model-Predictive Control (MPC), and the use of different robust mechanisms for switching between the multi-modal controllers. It was shown that many different switching control strategies can be naturally derived from the basic framework, which demonstrates the generality of the proposed approach.

This research work introduces an efficient hybrid control methodology through combining the traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) optimal controlher. The proposed hybrid control approach is adopted to design three degree of freedom (3DOF) stabilizing system for helicopter. The gain parameters of the classic PID controller are determined using the elements of the LQR feedback gain matrix. The dynamic behaviour of the LQR based PID controller, is modeled in state space form to enable utlizing state feedback controller technique. The performance of the proposed LQR based LQR controller is improved by using Genetic Algorithm optimization method which are adopted to obtain optimum values for LQR controller gain parameters. The LQR-PID hybrid controller is simulated using Matlab environment and its performance is evaluated based on rise time, settling time, overshoot and steady state error parameters to validate the proposed 3DOF helicopter balancing system. Based on GA tuning approach, the simulation results suggest that the hybrid LQR-PID controller can be effectively employed to stabilize the 3DOF helicopter system.
Effectiveness of Fast Speed Yaw and Roll Control Switching Instead of Normal ...AM Publications
In this paper, the effectiveness of new position control strategy - fast speed yaw and roll control switching method instead of the roll control only in Parrot AR Drone 4 rotor helicopter in horizontal plane for automatic fixed position flight was confirmed. General 4 rotor basic flight controller considers only simple floating control and does not concern the position control in the space, the AR Drone was also developed as realizing the floating control only and it is necessary to control the position by the user. Instead of a simple roll control, fast speed switching yaw and roll controls (plus pitch control) could realize stable automatic fixed position control comparing with the simple roll plus pitch controls in the horizontal plane. Proposed method reduced the AR Drone automatic fixed control within S.D. of x and y axis to 31.6% and 54.8% comparing with the normal roll plus pitch controls S.D. of x and y in 3.5 x 5 x 2.4 m room, and it will useful for hobby-class 4 rotor system's the aircraft position control in such a small room condition.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
