Ovid s Devaluation of Sympathy in Metamorphoses Essay
Ovid s Devaluation of Sympathy in Metamorphoses
Ovid reveals two similar tales of incest in the Metamorphoses. First, he describes the non sisterly
love Byblis acquires for her twin brother Caunus. Later, he revisits the incestuous love theme with
the story of Myrrha who develops a non filial love for her father, Cinyras. The two accounts hold
many similarities and elicit varying reactions. Ovid constantly tugs at our emotions and draws forth
alternating feelings of pity and disgust for the matters at hand. Repetition with a difference in these
two narratives shows how fickle we can be in allotting and denying sympathy, making it seem less
valuable.
Both tales begin drawing forth a sense of disgust for the situation in ... Show more content on

Myrrha points out her misfortune and state of misery; since she was not been born to those
tribes in which / the mother mates with her own son, the daughter / with her own father (339),
she is forlorn denied the very man for whom [she longs] (339). Overwhelming confusion in each
girl s speech elicits further pity. Byblis begins her speech struggling to interpret her dream; it
was a beguiling scene yet seemed so true (308). Myrrha begins asking, Where has my mind led
me? (339), and wonders what makes this incestuous passion unlawful because [she has] not
heard that any god or written law condemns the union of a parent and his child (Crane on line).
She decides that human scruples repress unions like these; envious law forbids what nature
permits (Mandelbaum 339), but later, contrary to this conclusion, she states she does not want
to defile the code / of nature with a lawless flame (340). Myrrha longs to leave [her] native land
(339), but her passion compels her to stay so she can see, touch, speak to, and especially kiss her
father (339 40). She feels these interactions should be sufficient and doesn t understand what
drives her to ask for more. Byblis mind sways when she wishes the gods had granted she and
Caunus all their similarities, excluding their common parents, then [calls] / upon the blessed gods
to curb [her] love (309). Later still, she

Franciscan Values Analysis
Out of all of Our Franciscan Values which include, reverence the unique dignity of each person,
encourage a trustful, prayerful community of learners, serve one another, society, and the Church,
foster peace and justice, and respect creation. Although it took me a good portion of the
semester, I believe that I fully recognize and understand the importance of these values as well as
how they are put into play every single day here at USF. The core/human values that I have put
into action this semester include serve one another, society, and the Church as well as reverence
the unique dignity of each person. While seem to correlate to each other as both can be carried out
by someone at any given time. Throughout my first semester here at USF, I believe that these two
values are the easiest to be put into play within our lives and fall hand in hand with one another....

My time spent at Community Harvest included a Thursday and a Friday where my first day
spent there included packing bags full of food for senior citizens who would come to pick up
their groceries throughout the day. Furthermore, each bag contained the same groceries which
made this task fairly simple in comparison to my second day there. One my second day, I assisted
those who were shopping for their groceries. Furthermore, I filled out forms which indicated how
many pounds of food each person could take. My role was to keep track of 7 10 different
shoppers at times while instructing them to what items they could take and how many pounds of
those items. Senior citizens as well as those who are in an unfortunate situation benefitted from my
actions due to the fact that I filled their bags with groceries and helped instruct people on what

An Analysis of Marks and Spencer
An Analysis of Marks and Spencer
INTRODUCTION TO THE FIRM AND ITS INDUSTRY
Marks and Spencer is one of the largest retailers in the United Kingdom, and is also known as a
major retailer selling diverse product ranges under their own exclusive brand in more than thirty
countries. Customer confidence in the Marks and Spencer brand remains second to none.
According to recent research undertaken by the Company, it shows that, in clothing, Mark and
Spencer has a clear lead over all its major competitors in the key areas of fit, quality, trust, breadth
of range and customer service.
In November of 2000, Marks and Spencer will launch a trial of three new lingerie only outlets in
Paris, Hamburg and Dusseldorf. According to industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most unusual part of this downswing of Marks Spencer is that the company has added 50,000
new investors to its share register over the past year. Normally a company as crisis torn as this one
cannot attract such a voluminous new following of investors, and rarely can the new fan club have
been so disappointed by what it found. The shares have been in more or less continual decline
throughout this period. Many analysts are wondering why? (Anonymous 21).
One explanation is that Marks Spencer has appeared on numerous share tip lists as an obvious
recovery stock. Many important newspapers included the company in its New Year share tips, and
the brokers have been unrelenting in rating the stock a buy. But investors don t have to read the
newspapers to think in the same way as them. Marks Spencer is still a very good brand which in the
past has achieved outstanding retail success. The logic behind buying the shares, then, is the belief
that they must at some time bounce back (Anonymous 21).
This is a bad enough strategy to apply to stock market investment generally, but it is a particularly
bad when applied to a specific stock such as in this case. The world is a fast changing place and just
because a company was once at the top of its competition doesn t mean it will ever be that way
again. Marks Spencer shares have repeatedly over the last year attempted to stage a recovery,

Job Satisfaction And Employee Turnover
Job satisfaction is a highly complex mixture of individual perceptions and individual rewards.
Job dissatisfaction often leads to employee turnover which is costly financially, frustrating to unit
managers, and also detrimental in regard to patient care and outcomes. Maintaining registered
nurse (RN) job satisfaction is directly related to staffing levels (Kalisch Hee Lee, 2014).
Teamwork and collaboration between all medical staff members can increase job satisfaction and
provide better outcomes in patient care. Absence of teamwork and communication can result
from cultural and rank barriers (McCulloch, Rathbone, Catchpole, 2011). Several studies have
been performed to measure job satisfaction in nursing staff, but the aim of this study examines
the links between actual unit level staffing and job satisfaction of RNs and nursing assistants
(NAs) (Kalisch Hee Lee, 2014) in order to identify factors that lead to employee turnover. The
first question the researchers were interested in states, What is the relationship between staffing
and job satisfaction of RNs and NAs controlling for demographic variables and patient acuity?
The second research question states, Are there any differences as to the significant predictors for
job satisfaction between RNs and NAs? The RNs and NAs were surveyed using a questionnaire to
rate job satisfaction while also providing demographic data. The researchers used 131 patient care
units in 11 different hospitals based in Michigan and

Is The Great Gatsby Really Great
Is Gatsby Really Great?
What makes someone great? What makes them remembered as being great? Or, how did they
become great? One way to answer these questions is first know what the word great actually
means. Great: the ability to make others see oneself differently or above the rest in class as well
as being prestigious; or being fairly well off from the average person. As the qualities are
described previously, it can be seen that the novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald,
has one man that can fit this very pristine and prestigious status. That man is James Gatz, but
everyone knows him as Gatsby, Jay Gatsby. He is resourceful; he is honorable, and he is praised.
Because of these reasons some may critique and find some unsettling ... Show more content on

Being a bootlegger during the Roaring 20 s time period was illegal under the Constitution of the
United States of America. Many readers can t see Gatsby as a successful criminal, because he is
too romantic, too idealistic, and too naive to be a criminal success (Pauly). As a result,
Fitzgerald had to [cloak] his gangster in mystery, and by having Gatsby redirect Nick s
questions, it hints at the fact that Gatsby [...] may be more dangerous than Nick realizes (Pauly).
Yes Gatsby is a bootlegger, but it doesn t mean he s not a decent guy. In fact I feel that he is
quite honorable. When Gatsby was taking Daisy back home, he let her drive his yellow car. As
a result, Daisy keep her foot on the gas, and when she hit Myrtle (who ran out to stop the car and
talk with Tom, but Tom wasn t driving or even in the car) she just kept driving without even
looking back. When Nick was going home, after leaving tom s house, he spotted Gatsby by the
bushes, and stopped to talk. They started talking about the accident when Nick realises Daisy
was the one who hit Myrtle. He asks and Gatsby replies with, Yes [...] but of course I ll say I was.
Gatsby then tells Nick that, I m just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother her about
that... (143 144). This shows Gatsby as honorable in two ways: 1. He s willing to sacrifice
himself for Daisy if it comes to it; 2. He s willing to watch Daisy and see that she stays safe. This
proves that Gatsby is much less of a bad person than some give him credit. What bootlegger
would want to sacrifice his whole life and reputation for a single girl not many would. This
makes Gatsby great; though some people see him as a bootlegger, it can also be seen that he has a
strong and large heart making him a soft bootlegger. Great people might have done some dark
business, but in the end they always know what s true to their

Alimony Payment Research Paper
Alimony is a court order payment made under a divorce or separate maintenance decrees between
former spouses. Payments are considered alimony when you no longer file a return with your
former spouse, the payment is received in cash, the payment is received by your former spouse, if
the divorce or separation agreement doesn t not state that the payment is alimony, or you and your
former spouse no longer live together. Payments must stop after former spouse s death and the
payment is not treated as child support or a property settlement. Not all payments under a divorce
or separation instrument are considered alimony such as child support, noncash property
settlements, or any other voluntary payments not required by the separation agreement. [IRC...

If one is subjected to this rule, they must include part of the alimony previously deducted in their
income in the third year. While the ex spouse can deduct part of the alimony payments they
previously received from their income in the same time period. The three year period begins
once the alimony payer has made a qualifying alimony payment under a divorce decree. Reasons
that can require a recapture include a change in your divorce or separation instrument, a failure
to make timely payments, a reduction in ability to provide support, or a reduction in your
former spouses need for support. A taxpayer is subject to the recapture rule if the alimony paid
in the third year decreases by more than $15,000 or the alimony paid in the second and third
years decreases significantly from alimony paid in the first year. When calculating decreasing
alimony one cannot include payments made under a temporary order, payments required over a
period of at least 3 calendar years that may vary (for example, income from a rental property), or

Topic: Conversion therapy
General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: I want the audience to avoid organizations that support the use of conversion
therapy and to understand the pseudoscientific and harmful nature of such a practice.
Thesis: Conversion therapy receives little support from the American psychiatric community due to
a lack of evidence confirming its supposed effectivity and the measurable damage it causes to the
individuals subjected to its outdated practices.
Action Step: I want the audience to avoid organizations that promote the use of conversion therapy
to alter a person s sexual orientation.
I.Introduction
a.For those of you who are straight, I want you to know that your feelings are signs of repressed
childhood traumas. Now, I want you all to put aside your heterosexual tendencies and let your true
same sex attractions take hold.

Why I Want To Be A Society Of Trout Persuasive Essay
I would like to participate in the Society of Fellows because I am a lover of philosophy and it
seems as if the Society of Fellows mix topics that intrigue me into one program, which is a great
fit for me. The Society of Fellows examines the American Constitution, the same way my
Constitutional Rights class discusses it, it asks more of people than to just know what the
American Constitution says, but also asks what it means, and how that meaning of particular
words has changed over time. This is the reason I am ecstatic about the program, being able to
be a part of a program that looks at the Constitution in ways many do not try to. Also, to be able
to belong to a program that does this a wonderful experience to have. Society of Fellows dissects
the Constitution, and this is something I have always wanted to do with a group of individuals
who has the same excitement level as I do while doing it. These are the reasons I would like to
participate in the Society of Fellows.
I expect to contribute my knowledge in discussions and my different view points on certain topics

her way into the hearts of many by traveling over the Atlantic Ocean twice (Shore). Earhart has

Confederates In The Attic Analysis
In Confederates in the Attic, the author, Tony Horwitz, gives an interesting, historical, and semi
humorous take on the Civil War, taking us on his journey through places and people that resonate
the Civil War, a journey he called the hardcore campaign of his own. Throughout this adventure,
Horwitz s obsession with the Civil Waris supplemented by reenactors who call themselves
hardcores, historians, museums, Daughters of the Confederacy, teachers, and battlefields, along
with everyday people who express their views and knowledge of the War. As Horwitz takes his
readers through his journey, he brings to light the idea that the Civil War is unfinished for many
Americans. This idea is explained and discussed through many of his encounters.
Tony Horwitz grew up with an obsession with the Civil War and upon moving back to America
after time abroad, Horwitz s interest rekindled. He travelled to nearby battlegrounds but his full
blown obsession did not come back until the reenactors showed up in front of his house filming a
documentary. These reenactors, who would perform in film shoots for basically nothing, called
themselves hardcores , referencing the fact that they sought absolute fidelity to the 1860s: its
homespun clothing, antique speech patterns, sparse diet and simple utensils, (7). Some even went
as far as to soak their buttons in their own urine to give it the proper Civil War era look. During

Elizabethan Gender Roles
Gender Roles: Shakespearean and Modern During the Elizabethan times, there were many issues
facing common people and William Shakespeare. An important issue that played a part in everyday
life for Elizabethans, whether rich or poor, was the difference between men and women. Gender
roles have been debated throughout history and are changing everyday. Although modern American
genderroles are much more defined and different than Elizabethan times, if Shakespeare were to

Homosexuals are fighting for their rights in court, but since the fear and hate of them is still bad
for most people, they are losing ( Homophobia ). Considering women in Elizabethan times were
looked at as weak and helpless, there are many differences between gender roles in Elizabethan
times and today. One major difference is the way that husbands treated their wives ( Elizabethan
Women ). . In the Elizabethan Era, men treated their wives as if they were servants in the
household, making them complete all of the domestic chores around the house. This gave men the
idea that women were their property, hence the thought that women were weak and helpless (
Marriage and Family ). In modern America, a man treats his wife with respect, and as equal as
every other person in society. This gives off a different idea than Elizabethan times; this idea is
that women are strong and confident. Men also had a head of the household status in Elizabethan
times, which gave them control of everything that went on in his house ( Marriage and Family ). In
present day America, women are often the head of the household, because women usually tell men
what to do and when to do it. Gender roles have changed to the highest extent since Elizabethan
times, which gives women greater opportunities to contribute to society. Back in the Elizabethan
Era, women were restricted to jobs only in the domestic field or housewives ( Elizabethan

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization(UNIDO) defines Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) as a management concept whereby companies integrate social and
environmental concerns in their business operations and interactions with their stakeholders . The
term is explained through a Triple Bottom Line Approach as being the way through which a
company achieves a balance of economic, environmental and social imperatives ( Triple Bottom
Line ) while at the same time addressing the expectations of shareholders and stakeholders
(Elkington, 1997). This approach assumes a very significant light in today s dynamic world where
every aspect of life is inter connected in a very mysterious fabric, where the alteration of one can
affect the others in ways beyond comprehension. Corporate Social Responsibility, both as a term
and concept, started becoming popular in the 1960s, when industrialization which sprouted in the
Industrial Revolutionwas fixating its roots all across the world. Industrialization can be defined as
the period of social and economic change that transforms a human group from an agrarian society
into an industrial one . Just like the correlation and dependence of the various aspects of life with
each other, it is seen that CSR and Industrialization shared their space of mutual effects as well.
This paper aims to present a historic view on CSR, based on the trends and influencing factors,
related to the booming of industrialization.

Pros And Cons Of The Null Hypothesis
The Null Hypothesis is the thought that all vertebrates (with the exception of humans) are of
equal intelligence (Pearce, 2008). The Null Hypothesis was proposed by Macphail (1982) and has
since been widely debated; we will break these debates into six categories for further examination.
Associative Learning
Associative learning is the capability of animals to learn associations between two stimuli or a
behavior and a stimuli. Associations can be made via classical conditioning or operant conditioning.
One of the biggest arguments against the Null Hypothesis is that the experiments done have been
confined to a species but not done in a cross species design. This could mean that while one
species may learn an association through classical conditioning it may not be able to learn it
through operant conditioning or vice versa. As far as studies to date show, all vertebrae species
are capable of forming associations however further research is needed to prove if all vertebrae
species possess the same processes in forming associations.
Memory
There is evidence of memory differences across species. Some species have shown that their short
term memory surpasses that of other species but there is no clear evidence if is it a result of
different processing mechanisms of memory. There is evidence that evolution may play a role...

Triple Bottom Line
Introduction
A triple bottom line model never merely quantifies an accomplishment or rather the wellbeing of a
company through its conventional monetary bottom line. However, triple bottom line similarly
measures social, ethical as well as environment performance of the company. Triple bottom line
typically is an incessant process that shall assist the company in concentrating into the performance

with ecological sustainability. The firm which employs triple bottom line towards capturing the set

JupiterВґs Europa Moon
Europa is the sixth of Jupiter s moons and the fourth largest. Europa is named after a Phoenician
princess who was abducted by Zeus and taken to the island of Crete to be his lover. Europa was
discovered by Galileo Galilei and possibly Simon Marius in 1610 and is one of the four Galilean
satellites. The others being: Io, Ganymede, and Callisto. Europais very different from the other
moons of Jupiter. Instead of a rocky, cratered surface like Callisto and Ganymede, it instead has a
smooth outer surface of cracked ice. There are very few sign of craters on Europa. In fact, only
three large craters have been found. This indicates that Europa s surface is very young and
active. In photographs sent back by orbiters, the surface resembles sea ice on Earth. Astronomers
believe that beneath this layer of ice may exist an ocean, kept liquid by the moon s internal heat.
This liquid ocean could be as much as 30 miles deep. The existence of deep ocean vents on the
ocean floor on Earth have led some scientists to speculate that there could be a possibility of life
on Europa. Around these deep sea vents on Earth are life forms that do not need sunlight to
survive. They instead feed on bacteria that get their nutrients from chemicals seeping up from the
ocean floor. This process is known as chemosynthesis. Scientists believe that similar life forms
could evolve on Europa if a liquid ocean does indeed exist beneath its frozen surface. The most
apparent features on Europa are a series

Role Of Women Into Combat Roles During Marine Corps...
Due to the expected integration of women into combat roles, the Marine Corps trained 233 female
Marines in Marine Corps infantry and other ground combat schools (Michaels). Of those 233, less
than half passed the minimum requirement of pull ups (AP). In 1994 the Direct Ground Combat
Definition and Assignment Rule was installed to remove women from direct combat roles
(Hovey). In the time since, social justice groups have fought for equality for women, the LGBT
community, and minority groups concerning multiple issues. Many issues arose from the repeal of
the Don t Ask, Don t Tell rule, but the military has not suffered for the decision. The current issue
is women in combat roles. The forced integration of women into combat specific roles is
detrimental to overall combat effectiveness. The nature of the push to move women into combat
specific roles forces those making the decisions into employing whatever means are necessary to
achieve the desired level of integration.
1. Current State of Women in the Military Women currently fill non combat oriented roles in the

Whiteness And Racism
In the past, and even today, the whites in United States had constructed the issue of racism and has
directed it towards certain ethnic groups throughout history to show superiority. This is referred to
as Whiteness , which is a socially constructed reality; This means one s skin color shapes a person s
view and lifestyle and is not inherent in an individual but determined by society. The term
whiteness does not necessarily hint at one s skin color or heritage but rather is a social position
within society. The ideology states that different ethnic groups within the United States must reach
whiteness in order to gain a social advantage to benefit themselves. This can result in certain groups
to essentially abandon their culture as well as the others who associate themselves with the said
ethnic culture. This grants ethnic groups to obtain a small amount of whiteness but are not
completely seen as white until the raceas a whole is accepted and seen as something that is
considered white culture.
Whiteness has been the reason for affecting national identity within the United States, primarily
because of the development of racism and how it has been directed towards specific groups. These
groups, unlike others, have failed and continue to fail at attaining a high social position, due to the
fact that some of the first groups were racially incorporated in society and were seen as a threat to
those who held a white , or the highest, status in society compared to other

warehouse, a repository of data gathered from various sources, including corporate databases,
summarized information from internal systems, and data from external sources. Analysis of the
data includes simple query and reporting, statistical analysis, more complex multidimensional
analysis, and data mining. Data analysis and data mining are a subset of business intelligence(BI),
which also incorporates data warehousing, database management systems, and Online. The
technologies are frequently used in customer relationship management (CRM) to analyze patterns
and query customer databases. Large quantities of data are searched and analyzed to discover useful
patterns or relationships, which are then used to predict future behavior. Some estimates indicate
that the amount of new information doubles every three years. To deal with the mountains of data,
the information is stored in a repository of data gathered from various sources, including corporate
databases, summarized information from internal systems, and data from external sources. Properly
designed and implemented, and regularly updated, these repositories, called data warehouses, allow
managers at all levels to extract and examine information about their company, such as its products,
operations, and customers buying habits. A

Domestic Terrorism Vs International Terrorism
Terrorism is nothing new to the U.S. as terrorists have taken lives inside of the country from the
Oklahoma City bombing and the first attack on World Trade Center in 1993. Even back in the
1970s the U.S. saw attacks from a group call the Weather Underground. However, the motivation
and reasoning for terror attacks from groups such as the Weather Underground and Al Qaedaare
often quite different and often so is the type of terrorism. Two of the most commonly known types
of terrorism are international terrorism and domestic terrorism. At times, it may be easier to figure
out the group or act that falls as either domestic terrorism or international terrorism. However, not

Traditionalism In The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
As times change, people are exposed for either being supportive of new ideas and values or for
being non accepting. People with traditional values tend to go with the latter and often demonstrate
their distaste with aggression. Author Shirley Jackson reveals the role traditionalism plays within
her fictional community in The Lottery. This lottery consists of the winner being stoned by the
few hundred people in the village (314). In The Lottery , it is out of Tessie s control that she is
selected for the lottery. Someone else could have easily been selected and it would not have made
a difference to the village people. Prior to Tessie being chosen, Jackson illustrated how popular
Tessie was amongst the townspeople. The townspeople were... Show more content on

Bridgitte was very different from myself as she identified herself as a scene kid. Despite our
school s strict dress coding policies, Bridgitte always wore dark, smoky, makeup and clothing
that exposed parts our uniform did not allow us. To me, this was something out of the ordinary.
However, I was accepting of her because she was a kind person and treated me as an equal. The
way she dressed and acted while she was in her scene phase did not make me think any less of
her. One day, Bridgitte and I were sitting down during our physical education class, chatting
away as our teachers gave instructions for our daily task. The conversation stopped for a second
and Bridgitte took a deep breath. I m bisexual, she whispered. To Bridgitte, this was probably
something very frightening to tell a friend. However, I did not understand why she felt the need
to announce this since it did not make a difference to me. All I said in response was, Okay. I
could feel her loosen up the moment I said that. I wondered why she was so afraid to tell me
something I thought was so simple. I came from a household where homophobic slurs were
always used but I never thought to give any power to the derogatory words. Instead, I ignored
them any time they were used. For this reason, I knew Bridgitte had no reason to be afraid of me.
Although I was unaware of it at the time, Bridgitte s fear was that people would no longer accept
her if they found out she was not

Acute Myeloid Leukemia Essay
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is the most common form of leukemia in adults, approximately
20,800 people are diagnosed each year, leading to the lowest survival rate of all of the leukemias. It
is a category of cancer of the blood and also the bone marrow (the soft inner part of some bones),
and inside the spongy bone where blood cells are created. The average age for this type of leukemia
is 65 or older, and is also generally more common in males rather than females. Acute Myeloid
Leukemiais cured in 35 40% of people less than 60 years old and 5 15% in people older than 60
years old. If untreated, it can be fatal, and also it can spread to other parts of the body, including
organs and tissues. Doctors still do not know what causes AML due to the fact that most people
with this disease do not have risk factors that can be altered. Treatment of the AML always depends

Then, myeloid indicates the type of cell this leukemia specifically starts from, which are white
blood cells called myeloid cells. AML is classified focusing on the maturity of cancercells at the
time when diagnosed, and additionally how different the cells are from normal cells. In the 1970
s, a group of French, American, and Birtish leukemias experts divided AML into 8 types, M0 M7,
this classification is based on the type of the type of cell and its degree of development. This was
based largely on how the leukemia cells looked under the microscope after routine staining.
Knowing the degree of AML, or subtype, can be important due to the fact that helps both the patient

this type is extremely rarely seen. Then the classification ranges from M7, which is acute

Masculinity Theory From Novels Of Treasure Island, By...
Joseph Kestner writes, In Treasure Island, Hawkins is forced to achieve an identity, but this process
is riddled with ambiguity, including the fact that Jim commits murder and remains haunted by the
experience as a nightmare, (Masculinities in British Adventure Fiction, 1880 1915). He specializes
in masculinitytheory from novels written in the late nineteenth century. Kestner can relate to Jim
because he is forced to become a new person, kill a human to save his own life, and questions why
situations happen. Unlike in Stevenson s text, Wyeth s illustration depicts Jim s stereotypical
masculinity through poses and symbolism, thereby suggesting his gendered maturation begins in a
domestic rather than adventure setting.

Jim s pose shows that he is unemotional compared to his mother who is positioned behind him. In
this illustration, Jim is shorter than his mother, but Wyeth uses the technique occlusion to make
Jim appear larger than he actually is. Wyeth uses this technique to demonstrate the importance of
Jim, implying that he is clearly the most powerful character. In the nineteenth century, genderroles
were vastly different than they are today; for example, females acted feminine and showed their
emotions, while men acted emotionless and tried to act tough. Wyeth shows this by having Jim
posing in a way that accentuates his masculinity; he has a wide stance and his shoulders are
pulled back. His stance shows his confidence, while his mother s stance shows skepticism. Jim s
mother is crying and she is allowed to show her emotion, while Jim is trying to hold back his
tears. Since Jim s father had recently passed away, this image shows that Jim is ready to assume
his father s role as the man of the house. Jim is transitioning from adolescence to adulthood, which
is seen at the point in the novel when he is about to set out on an adventure at sea. Their
relationship would be diminished by the inability to see each other all the time. But, Jim is no
longer dependent upon his parents, rather he is now an independent person, and this is shown in
the illustration.

Dogs Digestive System
Dogs have a monogastric digestive system similar to that of a human, this means they have a one
compartment stomach. Their gastrointestinal tracts have not evolved to digest fiber well and can
only handle it in smaller amounts. For all animals digestion begins in the mouth. Each animal has
differing dental make ups, in order to fulfill their dietary needs. So carnivores often have
particularly large canine teeth that are made for ripping apart their prey. With that said, they are
physically digesting food by chewing it into smaller pieces. Also since the food is infused with
saliva, which has enzymes in it, it breaks down even further. Next, the feed moves through the
Esophagus, which is simply a passage to the stomach. Once in the stomach,... Show more content on

Each organ has a specific task that aids in the breaking down of food and absorbing of nutrients.
Starting with the mouth, dogs have saliva, which is mostly water, but may contain an enzyme that
slightly helps called salivary lipase. For the most part though, saliva mainly moistens the food so
that it can travel easily to the stomach. There, the stomach secretes mucins, hydrochloric acid, and
pepsinogen. Mucins create the protective lining of the stomach and assist in the muscular lining s
ability to mix the digesta. Hydrochloric acid and pepsinogen work together to lower pH, absorb
vitamin B12, digest proteins (such as chicken meal and fish meal). Dietary fats such as omega 3
fatty acids that are in fish oil would also be absorbed in the small intestine. Now, at the beginning of
the stomach is the duodenum which has Brunner s glands that protect its lining. Then bile is
delivered from the liver to help digest lipids. The pancreas also plays a role by producing enzymes
that are essential for digesting starch, proteins, lipids, etc. So ultimately, any protein residue from
the two ingredients listed would typically be utilized by this point. Then the last step is the large
intestine which is the main site for water absorption. Certain products arrive in the large intestine
and end up passing through because the large intestine lacks that ability to absorb it. This is the
case for long chain fatty acids, microbial cells, and B vitamins. Having said that, the end result is
waste matter, also known as

Nature Vs Nurture As A Serial Killer
Historical Background
What causes an individual to become a serial killer? Bio psychologists believe that starting from
birth the human mind is a tabula rasa or blank slate, and the individual learns behaviors and socio
cultural norms from individuals around them. This concept of nature versus nurture was based
upon the idea that it is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant
aspects of child development and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological. The
theory that explains the nature aspect of the nature versus nurture principle is called the attachment
theory, which views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures
survival. It is a biological need that has ensured the survival of many species including the human
race; because of the need to protect and be protected humans as a species has been able to endure.
It is also a psychological need to want to be cared for as well as care for others a study done by
Harry Harlow (1950s). The concept of nurture focuses mainly on the effect that the environment has
on the development of human beings and whether it is more important than nature. Several studies
have been generated to try and settle the ongoing debate of nature versus nurture.
Many psychologists agree that nurture play a greater part in the development of a human being.

Economic Traditionalism As The Antithesis Of Economic...
Economic traditionalism is essentially the antithesis of modern capitalism. Within this
framework, work was viewed as a necessary evil (Kalberg 2011a: p. 418). It was simply the
means through which people acquire the economic needs necessary for survival. Therefore, work
and money did not take precedence over one s family, community, and leisure. The tasks
themselves were based on custom and tradition, and were independent of the individual himself.
That is, work did not constitute one s self identity. Luther was an extreme proponent of this
ideology. He was suspicious of wealth and asserted that money should only be enough to live a life
of integrity. Weber ([1905] 2011) describes Luther s reservation:
Luther was convinced that people of every status can become saved...Therefore, the striving for
material gain that goes beyond one s own needs, Luther argues, must be a symptom of one s lack
of grace. Indeed, because striving for gain appears to be possible only at the expense of others, this
pursuit must be viewed as an unequivocal abomination. (P. 103)
Thus, Luther was critical of those who utilized work to feed their avarice. Instead, asceticism was
highly valued; as people were advised to renounce gluttony and avoid succumbing to their physical
and sensual pleasures. Luther was also wary of those who attempted to venture outside of their
calling. This was viewed as tinkering with God s will and undermining His plan for the individual s
salvation. Therefore, the

This historical study will define the dual hostility of the Soviet Union and the United States in

It assumed the use of multiple and powerful nuclear weapons by both sides in the Cold War,
resulting in reciprocal total annihilation.
This strategic perspective defined the logical outcome of a nuclear war between two major
powers, which would result in the destruction of both sides of the conflict. Therefore, the U.S.
and the Soviets would lose in the case of a nuclear war, which laid the foundation for the Cold
War and the political conflicts that followed. This aspect of a cold war defines the ideological
expansion of communism and capitalist ideology, which would now compete for world
domination. By not being able to actually initiate a hot war between the two superpowers, it
became apparent that clandestine spy networks and the movement of nuclear arsenals would set the
stage for the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
The Soviet Union played an important role in bringing nuclear missiles to Castro s Cuba in
1962, but it should also be mentioned in the context of the overreaching Cold War with the
United States. In a broader context of the Cold War, the United States has presaged the Cuban
Missile Crisis by President Kennedy s placement of nuclear missiles on the border of Turkey and
Italy, which was perceived as a threat by Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev,. These events took
place in 1961, which could be perceived as a cause for the movement of nuclear missiles by the
Soviets to Cuba in 1962. Overall, it was also evident that the Soviets and the U.S.

China’s New Nationalism Essay
No one can deny from recent news that there has been a strong surge of Chinese nationalism, and
that this nationalism has turned heads in the international community. The nationalism that the
CCP has affected is taking on a life of its own. In its strategy of pragmatic nationalism, the CCP
tried to blur the lines between love of country with love of the state and governing body. What has
resulted is a whole new breed of nationalism that is very much independent of the Chinese
Communist Party and in fact has caused the CCP great concern. This new form of nationalism is
much more vibrant, passionate, virulent and uncontrollable than the government had intended with
its post 1989 strategy of obtaining legitimacy through nationalism. This... Show more content on

and also, of the Communist Party that was portrayed as the governing body that has contributed
greatly to the people of China. One experience so far in China that left a strong impression on
my mind was a visit to the Shaanxi museum of history. Our tour guide was a locally educated
young woman in her twenties. As she took us through the different periods of Chinese history, at
every exhibit showing some sort of tool or mechanistic contraption she would turn and say as
you can see, the Chinese people are very smart! She also recounted a story in which she was very
offended that an American made a comment that Chinese people are short, to which she replied
yes, we are, but we have five thousand years of history and culture! Both the richness and vastness
of Chinese history was a huge source of pride for her, as her slightly illogical response to the
American s comment shows. In retrospect, her age denotes that she grew up on the government s
campaign in the 1990s to educated students about China s greatness, to foster pride. At the same
time however, China s battered history with the West since the Opium war of the mid 19th century
was emphasized to demonstrate how Chinese has been constantly abused and mistreated by the
imperialist powers. The CCP was portrayed as the right government to help

Journal on The Manufacture of Consent
In Noam Chomsky s film I have learned quite a few things about life in a
democratic society. This film has made think in a three dimensional way for whom is
really right, Noam Chomsky or those who he calls quot;Elites quot;. I have come to the
conclusion that Noam Chomsky is right, for his claim is very convincing which is
that the media is controlled by the elites who determine what the public should
know. How exactly does Chomsky prove all this to make sense? Well, he
explained that the governments, corporations and the other elites manufacture the
consent of the public to serve their own interests.

Another thing I would like to talk about is that Noam Chomsky is a type of
person who wont let nothing get in his way, for example: It was said that he risked
his career and life for the sake of other people. This is one of the reasons why I
would respect him. He could have put his whole family down the drain, but
somehow he came out on top. I could tell he was a man who is not only itelligent,
but also a man of great courage and caring for those in need, like those of East
Timur. If it wasnt for him, I would bet that more than half the class would of
never heard about what was going on in East Timur. The reason why I believe he
made film was that he wanted to help the people of East Timur or else he wouldn t
have put it on the film. He wanted the viewers to see the tragedy of East Timur,
for he believed that the only way to work out problems was from the outside and
this I think, he meant us the viewers to spread the word for we are a democratic
society and we control the government and not the government control us.

The Causes Of Crime
Crime can never be eliminated in the world and it would be abnormal if it ever did happen in
society. Perhaps, a society without crime is a spiral of our own imagination. Crime can be
related to intra class struggles because it still makes an impact in America. In today s society
crime is a norm for many cities in America. According to Forbes, St. Louis is the most dangerous
city in America in 2017. Why are there increasing rates of crime over the last decade? What are
the reasons for crime? The reasons of crime can stem from poverty, unemployment, politics, drug
abuse, and recurring individuals in and out of prison. In past history, former Mayor Richard J. Daley
was involved in a corruption scandal. There is a history of corruption by officials in Chicago
because they would use the political machine to gain political support to win in office. This
machine is produced by a boss or group that demands the support of other officials through
scandalous control. Daley allowed the poor to suffer and the richer get wealthier. The purpose is to
gain control over a particular area. In today s society, the machine is still seen today in Chicago s
Police Department. Durkheim argues that crime makes society functions as a whole. He states that
crime is normal because it generates the collective sentiment. Collective sentiments reinforce the
values and ethical standards that society has brought forth to follow. The rules that are broken are

Examples of the different types of biometrics that individuals use every day are: using a
fingerprint to lock a cellphone, automatically getting tagged in Facebook photos, and simply
saying a phase to unlock a door or computer. Though there are many different types of biometrics
systems currently on the market, they all successfully identify and authenticate people with a high
degree of accuracy (Coleman, 2000) and are used by people in many different career fields.
Is it effective and accurate?
One may ask, how effective and accurate is biometric technology? Well to give you an idea of
its effectiveness and accuracy, biometrics is currently being used by law enforcement agencies
across the world. The first type of biometrics used by law enforcement agencies was
fingerprinting, which began almost a century ago (Coleman, 2000). Finger prints are one of the
most common biometric modality due to the fact that no two fingerprints are exactly alike (

Hot Crisis: 2007 present
With electronics chains CompUSA and Circuit City already struggling even before the brunt of
the economic slowdown, larger retailers such as Wal Mart and Target saw an opportunity to grab
a piece of the lucrative electronics business. Wal Mart, for example, greatly expanded its selection
of high definition televisions and home theater systems. This not only threatens Best Buy s market
share, but applies some price pressure to Best Buy s high margin items. This seems to be a
textbook example of why a market leader cannot sit on its laurels even when it appears to be the

As the U.S. economy has slowed, bringing consumer spending down with it, nearly every

the type of people who lived during the Depression and which ones were affected the most.
Lastly, imagine how people reacted to this situation during the Depression. With this in mind, an
large amount of people were evicted from their homes, and fired from jobs. There were many
people affected by this and most of them had nowhere to go. In short, people who did not have
anywhere to go decided that they would make their own shelters. This is where the creation of
Hoovervilles came into place. This soon became a huge deal during the Depression and across
America.
(First Sentence Missing) For example, people during the Depression really wanted express their

history. The Great Depressionstarted during 1929 and how it all started with the stock market
crash of 1929. The Great Depression lasting almost a decade plunged America into sorrow and
great dismay. (Source 3) Before the Great Depression happened America was booming in
economic growth. Later this boom was named the Roaring Twenties. New inventions
contributed to this economic growth. People would build new devices which created
manufacturing jobs which increased the amount of money people had to spend after bills. For
example, the Television and the radio were a huge deal. However, most middle and lower
classes could not afford all the new inventions that were coming out. However, people did not
want to be left out so a new idea was made. This new invention is credit, credit was a form of
payment in which the bank gave you an certain amount of credit in which you could use the buy

Athletes Vs Pro Sports Players
A man that fights in the military should make more money than a professional sports player. A
soldier can t see his or her family on holidays, birthdays, or anniversaries, while a sports player
can bring their families to their games. A man who plays for the NBA makes up to 5 million
dollars per year according to moneynation.com. A sergeant in the U.S Army makes only 35,592
dollars per year. A collegefootball coach in Alabama makes 75,000 dollars for having a title and
125,000 for winning a game. This is much more than soldier. Soldiers risk their lives, and know
that they may not wake up in the morning and see the light of day. Pro sports players do not risk
their lives, and only have to worry about getting an injury while playing.

It is easy to think communicating is simple; however it is usually quite complicated and very
easy to send the wrong message. The two elements in every communication situation are the
sender and the receiver. The sender conveys the idea and the receiver interprets it and usually
gives the sender feedback. Feedback is a powerful tool to communication effectiveness, because
it enables the sender to determine whether or not the receiver correctly interpreted the message.
Likewise in this case line managers haven t been able to express themselves and therefore there
hasn t been any feedback conveyed with the General Manager. A possible cause for this problem
is that majority of line managers employed in India are recent university graduates (World
Business Culture, 2012). Now this is not the problem, the problem is the lack of experience held
by these employees compared to the experience of general managers. And with the way businesses
are run in India it is usually a case of the person with the most experience in the business gets to
have the final say (Chakravarty, 2013).
Controlling
The second aspect of management used to investigate the issue is Controlling. Control is a concern
that is facing every manager in every organisation today. Many businesses continually look to

New Orleans Case Study
CASE FOR OR AGAINST NEW ORLEANS New Orleans is amongst the oldest cities in the
United States, it boasts a 300 year history unlike any other major town in the country. The
primary economic activities of New Orleans are that it s among the busiest cities with ports, in
that it controls Americas shipping. This is because it is strategically located along river
Mississippi and therefore, it serves so many people through delivery of consignments this has not
only made it a port city but also a commercial powerhouse. The city host some trade activities due
to its strategic location this has enhanced faster moving of commodities through shipping, therefore

As a starting point, I assumed that disastrous floods could submerge New Orleans through two
major corridors: first and foremost from the south and east through hurricanes as happened with
Hurricane Katrina, and the other primarily from the North through River Mississippi basin flood
flows as in the vast example of the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.In an effort to get all the
accurate historic records of floods that have happened on the east side of New Orleans i.e, the
Lake Pontchartrain shoreline and similar areas, and along the banks of the River Mississippi, I
used the United States Geological Survey (USGS) flood gauge statistics of peak annual flood
releases from a flood gauge location on Lake Pontchartrain and from two River Mississippi
measures, one upstream in Baton Rouge and

The Year I Would Not Say 2003
I would not say 2003 was my brightest year. Actually, I do not think I had that yet but it was the
year I started to notice how terrible the public school system in the city of Saint Louis could be.
Not to say every teacher didn t care but, it was something special about the teachers I encountered
in this year. A certain I don t care attitude that they gave off. This was never more apparent than in
my 6th grade homeroomclass at Froebel elementary.
My homeroom teacher, Mr. Harris, a six foot tall elderly man stood up from the faded brown chair
pointing his wrinkled index finger at every single word on the chalk board in front of me and
the tired class. His greyish black mustache slowly rose from his mouth as he said the goal for the
day. Just do something! he shouted as he pointed at the board. He always had an attitude when
he was speaking to the class for some reason. His wrinkled Blue dress shirt and dark brown pants
was a perfect representation of his attitude, bland. I know you all are going to sleep and laugh
through the whole day. So do the other teachers a favor and don t snore loud. He said turning his
face to us. His glasses looked as old as he was. The black paint on them began to chip showing the
hidden metal frame as the light from the ceiling shined down on his wrinkled brown face. He rarely
smiled but today he chose to because it was a special day and boy was it pleasant . His teeth were
yellow and I could smell his breath from the middle of

The Movie Boondock Saints
The Boondock Saints Report
That our feet may swiftly carry out thy command so we shall flow the river forth to thee, and
teeming with souls shall it ever be . Forbidden to be repeated by anyone who is not a McManus,
Connor and Murphy allow the family prayer to roll off their tongues, and journey into the ears of
the monstrous souls they are about to exterminate. Their religious belief nourishes the idea that
they can make the streets of Boston good. The Boondock Saints is a movie about religion, family,
and vigilante justice.
In the movie the killing started out with just Connor and Murphy, but their best friend Rocco
begged to be apart of the Boston action. From the beginning, Paul Smeckler was trying to figure
out who was committing all the murders in Boston. Until he found Rocco s finger at a crime
scene, and had come to a conclusion that he knew who the Saints were. Confused as to why they
were committing these crimes, Smeckler went to a church and talked to a priest, where he
realized that the saints were only killing to make the city pure. Always able to circumvent every
crime, the three of them (Rocco, Connor, and Murphy) were handcuffed to chairs, where one of
Guiseppe Yakavetta s (the man they have been after the whole movie) workers shot and killed
Rocco. Connor and Murphy were filled with rage and anger, but it was necessary to have a
proper goodbye. Joining in on the family prayer an unfamiliar face popped in the room who
ended up to be their father Il Duce; who joins the both of them in killing Guiseppe in the
courtroom at the end of the movie. In one of the scenes of the movie, Connor and Murphy were
struggling their way through a vent. Traveling through the vent was so difficult because Connor
demanded that they needed a rope. Constantly going back and forth fighting, the vent gives and
falling down, the twins get tangled up in the rope. With a few seconds to think they break free
their hands and shoot around the room killing all the Russians. The both of them gathered all the
bodies that they killed, crossed the arms, and placed pennies on each of the mens eyes.
Placing the pennies over the Russian s eyes symbolizes a religious act done in many parts of the
movie; every time the twins would

Pat Tillman showed great loyalty to his team mates. He served his country and was a famous

Jan Brett s Website Research Paper
#3 I think Jan Brett s website is very beneficial for students and even teachers. She gives a lot of
free, creative activities to do. I believe children would love this site because there are so many
options and different activities, a student would have to find something he or she would enjoy
doing. The site teaches many skills through coloring to reading, games and videos. While watching
her video, Jan seems very inspirational and wants children to follow their dreams.

Women s rights, Hispanic rights, Islamic rights, unemployment and so many more are issues in the
world today that would be introduce in the course so students will not only be learning about
African American but the diversity, and the unity of our society, which is what the African
American culture is really all about.
Why African Americans why not Hispanic studies? But that s just the thing guys we have to start
from somewhere. If we fight for this it will also inspire others to do the same, it would bring
attention to the unfair system that we have been trained to live in and become a stepping stool to
make change happen. We just have to continue to work together to achieve greatness.
We can not understand the American history without learning about the African Americans
experience, and when I say the African American experience I do not mean just focusing on
slavery. You see too many time in American history the horror of slavery, racismand segregation
has been focused topic and has been displayed to many as the only history African Americans have
in America. You see so many of us put to the expense of not recognizing the creativity, faith,
courage, and the leadership that has been molded into African Americans then and still

  • 2. Ovid s Devaluation of Sympathy in Metamorphoses Essay Ovid s Devaluation of Sympathy in Metamorphoses Ovid reveals two similar tales of incest in the Metamorphoses. First, he describes the non sisterly love Byblis acquires for her twin brother Caunus. Later, he revisits the incestuous love theme with the story of Myrrha who develops a non filial love for her father, Cinyras. The two accounts hold many similarities and elicit varying reactions. Ovid constantly tugs at our emotions and draws forth alternating feelings of pity and disgust for the matters at hand. Repetition with a difference in these two narratives shows how fickle we can be in allotting and denying sympathy, making it seem less valuable. Both tales begin drawing forth a sense of disgust for the situation in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Myrrha points out her misfortune and state of misery; since she was not been born to those tribes in which / the mother mates with her own son, the daughter / with her own father (339), she is forlorn denied the very man for whom [she longs] (339). Overwhelming confusion in each girl s speech elicits further pity. Byblis begins her speech struggling to interpret her dream; it was a beguiling scene yet seemed so true (308). Myrrha begins asking, Where has my mind led me? (339), and wonders what makes this incestuous passion unlawful because [she has] not heard that any god or written law condemns the union of a parent and his child (Crane on line). She decides that human scruples repress unions like these; envious law forbids what nature permits (Mandelbaum 339), but later, contrary to this conclusion, she states she does not want to defile the code / of nature with a lawless flame (340). Myrrha longs to leave [her] native land (339), but her passion compels her to stay so she can see, touch, speak to, and especially kiss her father (339 40). She feels these interactions should be sufficient and doesn t understand what drives her to ask for more. Byblis mind sways when she wishes the gods had granted she and Caunus all their similarities, excluding their common parents, then [calls] / upon the blessed gods to curb [her] love (309). • 3. Franciscan Values Analysis Out of all of Our Franciscan Values which include, reverence the unique dignity of each person, encourage a trustful, prayerful community of learners, serve one another, society, and the Church, foster peace and justice, and respect creation. Although it took me a good portion of the semester, I believe that I fully recognize and understand the importance of these values as well as how they are put into play every single day here at USF. The core/human values that I have put into action this semester include serve one another, society, and the Church as well as reverence the unique dignity of each person. While seem to correlate to each other as both can be carried out by someone at any given time. Throughout my first semester here at USF, I believe that these two values are the easiest to be put into play within our lives and fall hand in hand with one another.... An Analysis of Marks and Spencer An Analysis of Marks and Spencer INTRODUCTION TO THE FIRM AND ITS INDUSTRY Marks and Spencer is one of the largest retailers in the United Kingdom, and is also known as a major retailer selling diverse product ranges under their own exclusive brand in more than thirty countries. Customer confidence in the Marks and Spencer brand remains second to none. According to recent research undertaken by the Company, it shows that, in clothing, Mark and Spencer has a clear lead over all its major competitors in the key areas of fit, quality, trust, breadth of range and customer service. In November of 2000, Marks and Spencer will launch a trial of three new lingerie only outlets in Paris, Hamburg and Dusseldorf. According to industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most unusual part of this downswing of Marks Spencer is that the company has added 50,000 new investors to its share register over the past year. Normally a company as crisis torn as this one cannot attract such a voluminous new following of investors, and rarely can the new fan club have been so disappointed by what it found. The shares have been in more or less continual decline throughout this period. Many analysts are wondering why? (Anonymous 21). One explanation is that Marks Spencer has appeared on numerous share tip lists as an obvious recovery stock. Many important newspapers included the company in its New Year share tips, and the brokers have been unrelenting in rating the stock a buy. But investors don t have to read the newspapers to think in the same way as them. Marks Spencer is still a very good brand which in the past has achieved outstanding retail success. The logic behind buying the shares, then, is the belief that they must at some time bounce back (Anonymous 21). This is a bad enough strategy to apply to stock market investment generally, but it is a particularly bad when applied to a specific stock such as in this case. The world is a fast changing place and just because a company was once at the top of its competition doesn t mean it will ever be that way again. Marks Spencer shares have repeatedly over the last year attempted to stage a recovery, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Job Satisfaction And Employee Turnover Job satisfaction is a highly complex mixture of individual perceptions and individual rewards. Job dissatisfaction often leads to employee turnover which is costly financially, frustrating to unit managers, and also detrimental in regard to patient care and outcomes. Maintaining registered nurse (RN) job satisfaction is directly related to staffing levels (Kalisch Hee Lee, 2014). Teamwork and collaboration between all medical staff members can increase job satisfaction and provide better outcomes in patient care. Absence of teamwork and communication can result from cultural and rank barriers (McCulloch, Rathbone, Catchpole, 2011). Several studies have been performed to measure job satisfaction in nursing staff, but the aim of this study examines the links between actual unit level staffing and job satisfaction of RNs and nursing assistants (NAs) (Kalisch Hee Lee, 2014) in order to identify factors that lead to employee turnover. The first question the researchers were interested in states, What is the relationship between staffing and job satisfaction of RNs and NAs controlling for demographic variables and patient acuity? The second research question states, Are there any differences as to the significant predictors for job satisfaction between RNs and NAs? The RNs and NAs were surveyed using a questionnaire to rate job satisfaction while also providing demographic data. The researchers used 131 patient care units in 11 different hospitals based in Michigan and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Is The Great Gatsby Really Great Is Gatsby Really Great? What makes someone great? What makes them remembered as being great? Or, how did they become great? One way to answer these questions is first know what the word great actually means. Great: the ability to make others see oneself differently or above the rest in class as well as being prestigious; or being fairly well off from the average person. As the qualities are described previously, it can be seen that the novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, has one man that can fit this very pristine and prestigious status. That man is James Gatz, but everyone knows him as Gatsby, Jay Gatsby. He is resourceful; he is honorable, and he is praised. Because of these reasons some may critique and find some unsettling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being a bootlegger during the Roaring 20 s time period was illegal under the Constitution of the United States of America. Many readers can t see Gatsby as a successful criminal, because he is too romantic, too idealistic, and too naive to be a criminal success (Pauly). As a result, Fitzgerald had to [cloak] his gangster in mystery, and by having Gatsby redirect Nick s questions, it hints at the fact that Gatsby [...] may be more dangerous than Nick realizes (Pauly). Yes Gatsby is a bootlegger, but it doesn t mean he s not a decent guy. In fact I feel that he is quite honorable. When Gatsby was taking Daisy back home, he let her drive his yellow car. As a result, Daisy keep her foot on the gas, and when she hit Myrtle (who ran out to stop the car and talk with Tom, but Tom wasn t driving or even in the car) she just kept driving without even looking back. When Nick was going home, after leaving tom s house, he spotted Gatsby by the bushes, and stopped to talk. They started talking about the accident when Nick realises Daisy was the one who hit Myrtle. He asks and Gatsby replies with, Yes [...] but of course I ll say I was. Gatsby then tells Nick that, I m just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother her about that... (143 144). This shows Gatsby as honorable in two ways: 1. He s willing to sacrifice himself for Daisy if it comes to it; 2. He s willing to watch Daisy and see that she stays safe. This proves that Gatsby is much less of a bad person than some give him credit. What bootlegger would want to sacrifice his whole life and reputation for a single girl not many would. This makes Gatsby great; though some people see him as a bootlegger, it can also be seen that he has a strong and large heart making him a soft bootlegger. Great people might have done some dark business, but in the end they always know what s true to their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why I Want To Be A Society Of Trout Persuasive Essay I would like to participate in the Society of Fellows because I am a lover of philosophy and it seems as if the Society of Fellows mix topics that intrigue me into one program, which is a great fit for me. The Society of Fellows examines the American Constitution, the same way my Constitutional Rights class discusses it, it asks more of people than to just know what the American Constitution says, but also asks what it means, and how that meaning of particular words has changed over time. This is the reason I am ecstatic about the program, being able to be a part of a program that looks at the Constitution in ways many do not try to. Also, to be able to belong to a program that does this a wonderful experience to have. Society of Fellows dissects the Constitution, and this is something I have always wanted to do with a group of individuals who has the same excitement level as I do while doing it. Confederates In The Attic Analysis In Confederates in the Attic, the author, Tony Horwitz, gives an interesting, historical, and semi humorous take on the Civil War, taking us on his journey through places and people that resonate the Civil War, a journey he called the hardcore campaign of his own. Throughout this adventure, Horwitz s obsession with the Civil Waris supplemented by reenactors who call themselves hardcores, historians, museums, Daughters of the Confederacy, teachers, and battlefields, along with everyday people who express their views and knowledge of the War. As Horwitz takes his readers through his journey, he brings to light the idea that the Civil War is unfinished for many Americans. This idea is explained and discussed through many of his encounters. Tony Horwitz grew up with an obsession with the Civil War and upon moving back to America after time abroad, Horwitz s interest rekindled. He travelled to nearby battlegrounds but his full blown obsession did not come back until the reenactors showed up in front of his house filming a documentary. These reenactors, who would perform in film shoots for basically nothing, called themselves hardcores , referencing the fact that they sought absolute fidelity to the 1860s: its homespun clothing, antique speech patterns, sparse diet and simple utensils, (7). Some even went as far as to soak their buttons in their own urine to give it the proper Civil War era look. During their reenactments, the hardcores would only eat food ... An important issue that played a part in everyday life for Elizabethans, whether rich or poor, was the difference between men and women. Gender roles have been debated throughout history and are changing everyday. Although modern American genderroles are much more defined and different than Elizabethan times, if Shakespeare were to live today, his writing would have been very different. Homosexuals are fighting for their rights in court, but since the fear and hate of them is still bad for most people, they are losing ( Homophobia ). Considering women in Elizabethan times were looked at as weak and helpless, there are many differences between gender roles in Elizabethan times and today. One major difference is the way that husbands treated their wives ( Elizabethan Women ). . In the Elizabethan Era, men treated their wives as if they were servants in the household, making them complete all of the domestic chores around the house. This gave men the idea that women were their property, hence the thought that women were weak and helpless ( Marriage and Family ). In modern America, a man treats his wife with respect, and as equal as every other person in society. This gives off a different idea than Elizabethan times; this idea is that women are strong and confident. Men also had a head of the household status in Elizabethan times, which gave them control of everything that went on in his house ( Marriage and Family ). In present day America, women are often the head of the household, because women usually tell men what to do and when to do it. Gender roles have changed to the highest extent since Elizabethan times, which gives women greater opportunities to contribute to society. Back in the Elizabethan Era, women were restricted to jobs only in the domestic field or housewives ( Elizabethan ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization The United Nations Industrial Development Organization(UNIDO) defines Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a management concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and interactions with their stakeholders . The term is explained through a Triple Bottom Line Approach as being the way through which a company achieves a balance of economic, environmental and social imperatives ( Triple Bottom Line ) while at the same time addressing the expectations of shareholders and stakeholders (Elkington, 1997). This approach assumes a very significant light in today s dynamic world where every aspect of life is inter connected in a very mysterious fabric, where the alteration of one can affect the others in ways beyond comprehension. Corporate Social Responsibility, both as a term and concept, started becoming popular in the 1960s, when industrialization which sprouted in the Industrial Revolutionwas fixating its roots all across the world. Industrialization can be defined as the period of social and economic change that transforms a human group from an agrarian society into an industrial one . Just like the correlation and dependence of the various aspects of life with each other, it is seen that CSR and Industrialization shared their space of mutual effects as well. This paper aims to present a historic view on CSR, based on the trends and influencing factors, related to the booming of industrialization. The notion of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Pros And Cons Of The Null Hypothesis The Null Hypothesis is the thought that all vertebrates (with the exception of humans) are of equal intelligence (Pearce, 2008). The Null Hypothesis was proposed by Macphail (1982) and has since been widely debated; we will break these debates into six categories for further examination. Associative Learning Associative learning is the capability of animals to learn associations between two stimuli or a behavior and a stimuli. Associations can be made via classical conditioning or operant conditioning. One of the biggest arguments against the Null Hypothesis is that the experiments done have been confined to a species but not done in a cross species design. This could mean that while one species may learn an association through classical conditioning it may not be able to learn it through operant conditioning or vice versa. As far as studies to date show, all vertebrae species are capable of forming associations however further research is needed to prove if all vertebrae species possess the same processes in forming associations. Memory There is evidence of memory differences across species. Some species have shown that their short term memory surpasses that of other species but there is no clear evidence if is it a result of different processing mechanisms of memory. • 17. JupiterВґs Europa Moon Europa is the sixth of Jupiter s moons and the fourth largest. Europa is named after a Phoenician princess who was abducted by Zeus and taken to the island of Crete to be his lover. Europa was discovered by Galileo Galilei and possibly Simon Marius in 1610 and is one of the four Galilean satellites. The others being: Io, Ganymede, and Callisto. Europais very different from the other moons of Jupiter. Instead of a rocky, cratered surface like Callisto and Ganymede, it instead has a smooth outer surface of cracked ice. There are very few sign of craters on Europa. In fact, only three large craters have been found. This indicates that Europa s surface is very young and active. In photographs sent back by orbiters, the surface resembles sea ice on Earth. Astronomers believe that beneath this layer of ice may exist an ocean, kept liquid by the moon s internal heat. This liquid ocean could be as much as 30 miles deep. The existence of deep ocean vents on the ocean floor on Earth have led some scientists to speculate that there could be a possibility of life on Europa. Around these deep sea vents on Earth are life forms that do not need sunlight to survive. They instead feed on bacteria that get their nutrients from chemicals seeping up from the ocean floor. This process is known as chemosynthesis. Scientists believe that similar life forms could evolve on Europa if a liquid ocean does indeed exist beneath its frozen surface. Due to the expected integration of women into combat roles, the Marine Corps trained 233 female Marines in Marine Corps infantry and other ground combat schools (Michaels). Of those 233, less than half passed the minimum requirement of pull ups (AP). In 1994 the Direct Ground Combat Definition and Assignment Rule was installed to remove women from direct combat roles (Hovey). In the time since, social justice groups have fought for equality for women, the LGBT community, and minority groups concerning multiple issues. Many issues arose from the repeal of the Don t Ask, Don t Tell rule, but the military has not suffered for the decision. The current issue is women in combat roles. The forced integration of women into combat specific roles is detrimental to overall combat effectiveness. The nature of the push to move women into combat specific roles forces those making the decisions into employing whatever means are necessary to achieve the desired level of integration. 1. Current State of Women in the Military Women currently fill non combat oriented roles in the military. These roles are those that are often aid oriented or rear , jobs that keep the servicemen and women behind the front lines, oriented MOSs. • 19. Whiteness And Racism In the past, and even today, the whites in United States had constructed the issue of racism and has directed it towards certain ethnic groups throughout history to show superiority. This is referred to as Whiteness , which is a socially constructed reality; This means one s skin color shapes a person s view and lifestyle and is not inherent in an individual but determined by society. The term whiteness does not necessarily hint at one s skin color or heritage but rather is a social position within society. The ideology states that different ethnic groups within the United States must reach whiteness in order to gain a social advantage to benefit themselves. This can result in certain groups to essentially abandon their culture as well as the others who associate themselves with the said ethnic culture. This grants ethnic groups to obtain a small amount of whiteness but are not completely seen as white until the raceas a whole is accepted and seen as something that is considered white culture. Whiteness has been the reason for affecting national identity within the United States, primarily because of the development of racism and how it has been directed towards specific groups. These groups, unlike others, have failed and continue to fail at attaining a high social position, due to the fact that some of the first groups were racially incorporated in society and were seen as a threat to those who held a white , or the highest, status in society compared to other ... Joseph Kestner writes, In Treasure Island, Hawkins is forced to achieve an identity, but this process is riddled with ambiguity, including the fact that Jim commits murder and remains haunted by the experience as a nightmare, (Masculinities in British Adventure Fiction, 1880 1915). He specializes in masculinitytheory from novels written in the late nineteenth century. Kestner can relate to Jim because he is forced to become a new person, kill a human to save his own life, and questions why situations happen. In this illustration, Jim is shorter than his mother, but Wyeth uses the technique occlusion to make Jim appear larger than he actually is. In the nineteenth century, genderroles were vastly different than they are today; for example, females acted feminine and showed their emotions, while men acted emotionless and tried to act tough. Wyeth shows this by having Jim posing in a way that accentuates his masculinity; he has a wide stance and his shoulders are pulled back. His stance shows his confidence, while his mother s stance shows skepticism. Jim s mother is crying and she is allowed to show her emotion, while Jim is trying to hold back his tears. Since Jim s father had recently passed away, this image shows that Jim is ready to assume his father s role as the man of the house. Jim is transitioning from adolescence to adulthood, which is seen at the point in the novel when he is about to set out on an adventure at sea. Their gastrointestinal tracts have not evolved to digest fiber well and can only handle it in smaller amounts. For all animals digestion begins in the mouth. Each animal has differing dental make ups, in order to fulfill their dietary needs. So carnivores often have particularly large canine teeth that are made for ripping apart their prey. With that said, they are physically digesting food by chewing it into smaller pieces. Also since the food is infused with saliva, which has enzymes in it, it breaks down even further. Next, the feed moves through the Esophagus, which is simply a passage to the stomach. Once in the stomach,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each organ has a specific task that aids in the breaking down of food and absorbing of nutrients. Starting with the mouth, dogs have saliva, which is mostly water, but may contain an enzyme that slightly helps called salivary lipase. For the most part though, saliva mainly moistens the food so that it can travel easily to the stomach. There, the stomach secretes mucins, hydrochloric acid, and pepsinogen. Mucins create the protective lining of the stomach and assist in the muscular lining s ability to mix the digesta. Hydrochloric acid and pepsinogen work together to lower pH, absorb vitamin B12, digest proteins (such as chicken meal and fish meal). Dietary fats such as omega 3 fatty acids that are in fish oil would also be absorbed in the small intestine. Now, at the beginning of the stomach is the duodenum which has Brunner s glands that protect its lining. Then bile is delivered from the liver to help digest lipids. The pancreas also plays a role by producing enzymes that are essential for digesting starch, proteins, lipids, etc. So ultimately, any protein residue from the two ingredients listed would typically be utilized by this point. Then the last step is the large intestine which is the main site for water absorption. Certain products arrive in the large intestine and end up passing through because the large intestine lacks that ability to absorb it. • 29. Nature Vs Nurture As A Serial Killer Historical Background What causes an individual to become a serial killer? Bio psychologists believe that starting from birth the human mind is a tabula rasa or blank slate, and the individual learns behaviors and socio cultural norms from individuals around them. This concept of nature versus nurture was based upon the idea that it is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant aspects of child development and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological. The theory that explains the nature aspect of the nature versus nurture principle is called the attachment theory, which views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures survival. It is a biological need that has ensured the survival of many species including the human race; because of the need to protect and be protected humans as a species has been able to endure. It is also a psychological need to want to be cared for as well as care for others a study done by Harry Harlow (1950s). The concept of nurture focuses mainly on the effect that the environment has on the development of human beings and whether it is more important than nature. Several studies have been generated to try and settle the ongoing debate of nature versus nurture. Many psychologists agree that nurture play a greater part in the development of a human being. • 30. Economic Traditionalism As The Antithesis Of Economic... Economic traditionalism is essentially the antithesis of modern capitalism. Within this framework, work was viewed as a necessary evil (Kalberg 2011a: p. 418). It was simply the means through which people acquire the economic needs necessary for survival. Therefore, work and money did not take precedence over one s family, community, and leisure. The tasks themselves were based on custom and tradition, and were independent of the individual himself. That is, work did not constitute one s self identity. Luther was an extreme proponent of this ideology. He was suspicious of wealth and asserted that money should only be enough to live a life of integrity. Weber ([1905] 2011) describes Luther s reservation: Luther was convinced that people of every status can become saved...Therefore, the striving for material gain that goes beyond one s own needs, Luther argues, must be a symptom of one s lack of grace. Indeed, because striving for gain appears to be possible only at the expense of others, this pursuit must be viewed as an unequivocal abomination. (P. 103) Thus, Luther was critical of those who utilized work to feed their avarice. Instead, asceticism was highly valued; as people were advised to renounce gluttony and avoid succumbing to their physical and sensual pleasures. Luther was also wary of those who attempted to venture outside of their calling. This was viewed as tinkering with God s will and undermining His plan for the individual s salvation. According to Forbes, St. Louis is the most dangerous city in America in 2017. Why are there increasing rates of crime over the last decade? What are the reasons for crime? The reasons of crime can stem from poverty, unemployment, politics, drug abuse, and recurring individuals in and out of prison. In past history, former Mayor Richard J. Daley was involved in a corruption scandal. There is a history of corruption by officials in Chicago because they would use the political machine to gain political support to win in office. This machine is produced by a boss or group that demands the support of other officials through scandalous control. Daley allowed the poor to suffer and the richer get wealthier. Not to say every teacher didn t care but, it was something special about the teachers I encountered in this year. A certain I don t care attitude that they gave off. This was never more apparent than in my 6th grade homeroomclass at Froebel elementary. My homeroom teacher, Mr. Harris, a six foot tall elderly man stood up from the faded brown chair pointing his wrinkled index finger at every single word on the chalk board in front of me and the tired class. His greyish black mustache slowly rose from his mouth as he said the goal for the day. Just do something! he shouted as he pointed at the board. He always had an attitude when he was speaking to the class for some reason. His wrinkled Blue dress shirt and dark brown pants was a perfect representation of his attitude, bland. I know you all are going to sleep and laugh through the whole day. So do the other teachers a favor and don t snore loud. He said turning his face to us. His glasses looked as old as he was. The black paint on them began to chip showing the hidden metal frame as the light from the ceiling shined down on his wrinkled brown face. Forbidden to be repeated by anyone who is not a McManus, Connor and Murphy allow the family prayer to roll off their tongues, and journey into the ears of the monstrous souls they are about to exterminate. Their religious belief nourishes the idea that they can make the streets of Boston good. The Boondock Saints is a movie about religion, family, and vigilante justice. In the movie the killing started out with just Connor and Murphy, but their best friend Rocco begged to be apart of the Boston action. From the beginning, Paul Smeckler was trying to figure out who was committing all the murders in Boston. Until he found Rocco s finger at a crime scene, and had come to a conclusion that he knew who the Saints were. Confused as to why they were committing these crimes, Smeckler went to a church and talked to a priest, where he realized that the saints were only killing to make the city pure. Always able to circumvent every crime, the three of them (Rocco, Connor, and Murphy) were handcuffed to chairs, where one of Guiseppe Yakavetta s (the man they have been after the whole movie) workers shot and killed Rocco. Connor and Murphy were filled with rage and anger, but it was necessary to have a proper goodbye. Joining in on the family prayer an unfamiliar face popped in the room who ended up to be their father Il Duce; who joins the both of them in killing Guiseppe in the courtroom at the end of the movie. In one of the scenes of the movie, Connor and Murphy were struggling their way through a vent. Traveling through the vent was so difficult because Connor demanded that they needed a rope.
