Eating traditional Portuguese food was a way of connecting with my living family members and
ancestors. Preparing, eating, sharing these foods, as well as sharing the stories associated with them
were vital in the maintenance of my Portuguese identity. The first few months of being vegan were
difficult because I struggled to fit in. Eatingat the dinner table with my aunts, uncles, and cousins
became an uncomfortable activity. I was constantly met with criticism, confusion, and
disappointment. I was also pressured, from several familymembers, to return to my past ways of
eating. I could no longer share in the experience of eating these traditional foods with my family.
They felt like I was rejecting them, which was definitely not the case. Although foodis a major part

language, and dance. Those things were important for me to remember when I first started out as
