2. What is copyrights? Why is it necessary?
Definition of ‘Copyright’:
The exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a fixed number of years, to
a print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material.
Copyrights are important in the case of my project, due to the fact that the song that I will use will not be
content of my own, as I haven’t created the music. Implying that I need to ask for permission from an
artist or creator that has already has music, or explore the options of using non- copyright music. I found
music from people I knew, was not what I wanted to use for my project, due to the wrong style/ genre of
music. Also I searched for copyright free music, however more often than not, the music had no lyrics
and I believed had an overused, basic sound, so I looked for my third option of gaining permission from
an artist.
I then began going through my own music and listening to new music on Spotify and YouTube, than had
some conventions for the alternative/ indie genre. I chose the song ‘Gold’, by the band Jaws, as I liked
the style of this song and felt that I could apply visual elements to match the sound.
3. Contacting for permission…
In order to gain the rights to use a song for my music video, I needed to contact an artist's management, asking
for permission to use their content for my personal use. Initially, I found a song that fitted a more indie genre,
had a reasonably pace and fit my existing ideas, then I searched for the band's Facebook page. The fact that it
was verified allowed me to trust this account, so i privately messaged the page explaining why I would like to
use there song, to which I was allowed.
4. After this message was sent, I searched for the artist's alternative contact details, where I came across the email
for Paul Schofield, who was labeled under 'management'. I emailed this contact and within a few hours I had
two responses that were allowing me to use the song Gold, for personal and educational purposes.
5. This communication has been
helpful for my project, due to
the fact and the fact that I was
able to gain acceptance in a
shirt period of time was
effective for my time
management. This now
allows me to start looking into
the song, analysing lyrics and
start moulding my existing
ideas to the characteristics of
the music.
