2. Features of lighting
◦ 3-point set up: 3 sources of light, creates a ’normal’ appearance,
soft shadows and average colours
◦ Key lighting: most important, highlights main object, normally
included in 3-point set up
◦ Fill lighting: also part of 3-point set up, purpose of lessening the
shadow contrast against subjects, softens key lighting by being at an
angle to the side.
◦ Back lighting: illuminates the subjects silhouette, separates subject
from background
3. Features of lighting
◦ Rim- lighting: similar to back lighting but with too light sources, slightly more
illuminating, sometimes sued for romantic scenes
◦ High key lighting: reduces the contrast in the shot, creates happy, joyful
impression
◦ Low key/ chiaroscuro lighting: high contrast between light and dark for depth
and intensity
◦ Natural lighting: used from natural sources, light the sun and outside
